IRONHORSE Basketball events for 2012 include Girls, Boys and Men’s Teams. This year's events are scheduled at Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Maryland which has two main gyms. The events are similar in that there will be three games minimum for each team over a Saturday and Sunday time table. Dates for each event are as follows: May 19 and 20, SAFE AND SANE EVENT (Benefits Brunswick High School Senior Class EVENT and is being supported by BHS ATHLETIC BOOSTERS (with Benefits to Brunswick High School Athletics and other BHS Booster club supported events and student services). June 9 and 10, IRONHORSE STROKE AWARENESS EVENT (Benefits a stroke victim, my brother, who continues to require extensive physical therapy and medical services to improve his quality of life). Discounts are available for early registration in multiple events or for registering multiple teams in one or more events. Deadline for May event early registration is May 1, 2012, for June event is May 27,2012. Please contact Michael Darling directly as early as possible at 240-404-8672 to receive terms for discounts for multiple events and multiple teams.
As some of you may already be aware, the IRONHORSE started out initially as an annual tournament to help the Frederick Mavericks Basketball Club raise funds and became the STROKE AWARENESS tournament to benefit my brother Charles Darling who suffered a brain stem stroke. This year the IRONHORSE has expanded to help the Brunswick High School organizations that typically have members who also volunteer help with our STROKE AWARENESS EVENT which continues to help my brother Charles who suffered his stroke in January of 2007 at the age of 43 and continues to need extensive speech and physical therapy. Each dollar raised equates to one (1) minute of speech, physical, or occupational therapy to help Charles return his life to some form of normalcy. Over the past year Charles has also received additional medical treatment which has helped him experience a marked improvement in his speech therapy. All proceeds from the IRONHORSE STROKE AWARENESS tournament go directly to The Charles Darling Stroke Fund.
If you, your club or team are unable to participate in the IRONHORSE STROKE AWARENESS EVENT, but would consider honoring Charles with a monetary gift, please make your check out to The Charles Darling Stroke Fund and mail directly to:
The Charles Darling Stroke Fund Care of Jeff Koch 7420 Westlake Terrace, #1612 Bethesda, Maryland 20817
Monetary gifts in any amount are greatly appreciated by Charles, his family and friends.
Early paid registration for each event provides your team with preferred scheduling of playing times. Having all teams registered early permits us to provide a maximum number of games per team. Our preference is to have all teams registered as early as possible to allow all teams to take maximum advantage of discounts for early registration as well as to get tournament schedules out to all participants one full week in advance of each event (rather than midnight the night before the event). If this is your first visit to our website and are looking for event flyers with registration forms, please click on the Forms and Handouts tab to obtain flyer with registration forms for each event as well as to view information and photos on previous IRONHORSE events held at Brunswick High School. You may also just write back and we can send you flyer and registration form for any event your team or club may be interested in attending.
Thanks for your time and consideration. If there are still questions or concerns please contact us at manager@frederickmavericks.com;.

Welcome letter from Tournament Director:
February 17, 2011
The IRONHORSE tournament is a fundraising event to benefit a brain stem stroke victim, my brother Charles Darling. Charles suffered his stroke in January of 2007 at the age of 43 and continues to need extensive speech and physical therapy. Each dollar raised equates to one (1) minute of speech, physical, or occupational therapy to help Charles return his life to some form of normalcy. All proceeds from the IRONHORSE tournament go directly to The Charles Darling Stroke Fund. Eight hours of daily therapy is $480.00 per day and still desperately needed.
If you, your club or team are unable to participate in the IRONHORSE event, but would consider honoring Charles with a donation, please make your check out to The Charles Darling Stroke Fund and mail directly to:
The Charles Darling Stroke Fund C/o Jeff Koch 7420 Westlake Terrace, #1612 Bethesda, Maryland 20817
Donations in any amount will be greatly appreciated by Charles, his family and friends.
Frederick Mavericks “IRONHORSE” tournament date for 2011 is set for Saturday June 18 & Sunday June 19, 2010 for Boys 13u, 14u, 15u, and 16u (7th through 11th Grade). This year’s tournament format is 16 minute halves, 4 minute halftime. See HANDOUTS section for 2011 tournament rules. No team coolers permitted in our facility. We offer reasonably priced food and drink concessions and there are several local establishments to patronize as well, including: El Sloppy Taco, Wing’s ‘n Pizza, McDonald’s, Roy Rogers and Subway.
Teams will play two games of pool play, then a third and final consolation game all, on Saturday (as gym time permits as much as possible). Generally, teams in 1st and 2nd place after pool play will play in bracket play; the determining factor is the overall number and size of age group pools. Larger numbers go to bracket play when there are more than 2 pools of 4 teams in an age group. We make every effort to assure no team will play more than three games per day; however there is the rare chance that a team could work its way through bracket play and end up in a fourth and championship game Sunday evening. The IRONHORSE tournament is a 16 to 24 (or 26) team event and slots fill quickly. Tournament is open to all teams. We provide team insurance for each team participating in our event.
Early paid registration provides your team with preferred scheduling of playing times. Having all teams registered early permits us to provide a maximum number of games per team. Our preference is to have all teams registered (paid) to our event by no later than May 18th this year, as our tournament flyer indicates, to allow all teams to take maximum advantage of discounts for early registration benefits as well as to get tournament schedule out to all participants one full week in advance of the event (rather than midnight the night before the event).
Thanks for your time and consideration. If there are still questions or concerns please contact us at manager@frederickmavericks.com.
