13U – Fall Super NIT (SC) Championship Game
October 7, 2009
In the Championship game of the 13U age division at the Jay Criscione Super NIT in Columbia, South Carolina, the #3 seed Georgia Roadrunners squared off against the #1 seed Carolina Sox. The game was highlighted by excellent pitching from both teams with the Sox’s pitcher William Detyens going the distance while throwing a two hitter and striking out 13 batters. The Roadrunner’s countered with pitchers Blake Hamilton and Lucas Herbert. Hamilton and Herbert combined for a no hitter, striking out 13 on their way to lead the Roadrunners to a 1-0 victory.
The game went scoreless through 5 ½ innings when Chase Burks drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the 6th inning. This was only the second walk issued by Detyen in the game. A pitch runner, Grayson Byrd, replaced Burks at first. Detyen managed to hold Byrd on first base while also striking out the next two batters. Then with 2 outs, and Byrd still on first, Chris Cullen took a 0-1 pitch deep to the left field fence just over the outstretched glove of the left fielder. Breaking at the “crack” of the bat, Byrd sprinted around 2nd and 3rd and just beat the throw to home plate. Detyen struck out the next batter, stranding Cullen at third base.
With the Roadrunners leading 1-0: the Sox’s Noah Hammond lead off the 7th inning with a walk after working Herbert to a 3-2 count. Jordan Lacavera then pushed Hammond to second with a sacrifice bunt. With the tying run on 2nd, Herbert struck out the next two batters on 8 pitches to close out the win and conclude what was the most exciting game of the tournament between clearly the best two teams of the age group.
