Raiders Advance

Tollison gives the Greenville High School Red Raiders late push to beat Seneca HS, 9-5

Next Game.....@ Travelers Rest 5:00

In a well played game full of intensity right from the start, Greenville's Red Raiders shut down Seneca's Bobcats to advance to the District 2 finals on Wednesday. With seven at bats and a bit of work Seneca plated three to start things off. Greenville responded with Taylor McCuen's double off the top of the left field wall brought in Clark Scolamiero. Rooke Crouch put one in right field and Gray Tollison took a hit to load the bases. Patience and a good eye earned Josh Wright a walk which also put the second Greenville run on the board. The inning ended with bases loaded.

Pitchers Kyle Edwards and John Parke mirrored each other delivering short scoreless innings for the second and third. Greenville did manage to load the bases although that was how they remained. Keeping things even seemed to be the theme in the forth inning as well as the Bobcats and Red Raiders added two runs each.

Seneca stranded two in the fifth and felt the tide begin to turn. In the bottom of the inning a two out single by Drew Davenport drove in Cason Mansell to tie the game and pump up the home crowd! The Bobcats loaded the bases in the sixth only to have it end in a double play. Two walks and a fielder's choice put two runners on for Greenville with one out. Gray Tollison ground out bringing in Clark Scolamiero, Rooke Crouch came in on a wild pitch. Miguel Vieira walked which turned into a run for courtesy runner Cason Mansell. With two outs and a full count Josh Wright put the finishing touch on the inning rocketing his Homerun! to the fans over the left field fence to end the inning 9-5. The final Bobcat inning was short and sweet as Cody Mitchell struck out the first two and the third batter ground out to end the game.

Shove City Members: John Parke looked great with flowing delivery and keeping his pitches per batter in check. He struck out four in his 3 2/3 innings on the bump. Cody Mitchell had an amazing night burning only 48 pitches in 3 1/3 innings of work. He gave up one hit, allowed no earned runs and struck out three. This pair seemed the perfect duo to throw for this game.

McCuen leads the Greenville High School Red Raiders to 6-0 victory

McCuen brought the heat against JL Mann HS during his outing. JL Mann HS managed just three hits off of McCuen, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two during his five innings of work.

Five runs in the first three innings helped the Greenville High School Red Raiders blow out JL Mann HS. An RBI single by Grant Cox, an error, a groundout by Drew Davenport, and a groundout by Cameron Reynolds during the second inning fueled the Greenville High School Red Raiders' offense early.

The Greenville High School Red Raiders were sparked by Cox and McCuen, who teamed up for five hits and two RBIs.

Raiders Take Region Title

The Greenville High School Red Raiders top Eastside HS in back-and-forth affair, 10-6.

The rain held off at Grover Reid Field Tuesday night just long enough for the Red Raiders to defeat the Eagles for the second time this season. The seniors displayed their leadership as Taylor McCuen pounded out three hits, including a two-run Home run, and had a total of four RBIs. Rooke Crouch added a two-run Home run of his own plus Gray Tollison and Miguel Vieira both doubled. Josh Wright, also a senior, held Eastside to only two runs through the first four innings. Twenty-three Home Runs this season and smart baseball have allowed the Greenville Red Raiders to remain undefeated in the region.

In the top of the second, Eastside grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Greenville quickly matched Eastside's strong inning with a two-run inning of their own in the second, scoring on a fielder's choice and an error. The Raiders then added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor McCuen singled, plating Drew Davenport and Cameron Reynolds to start the inning. That was followed up by Rooke Crouch's two-run home run, bringing home McCuen. Three runs in the top of the fifth helped the Eagles close their deficit to 7-5. A solo home run, an RBI single and an error sparked Eastside's rally. Kyle van Hoff struck out to end the Eastside HS threat. After pushing across one run in the top of the sixth, Eastside faced just a 9-6 deficit. A fielder's choice triggered Eastside's comeback. Finally, Cody Mitchell induced an inning-ending ground out from Brandon Barber. It didn't take long for the our Red Raiders to respond as they scored one run of their own in the sixth. Cason Mansell scored on an RBI single by Grant Cox for the final run of the game. The Eagles were flightless in the seventh, taking their second loss to the Red Raiders this year.

The first three at bats for Travelers Rest loaded the bases, however the next three resulted in outs with the Devil Dogs managing only one run for all their effort. Things remained rather uneventful through the second. The top of the third Steven Wohlrab found his stride striking out two and delivering the third batter the perfect pitch for a fly out. This seemed to spark the entire Red Raider team who turned the third into a big inning for themselves. By taking advantage of two walks and three defensive errors Greenville put three on the board with little effort before their first out. Gray Tollison then launched one out, Homerun with two on to double the runs for the home team! The inning ended with Greenville up 6-1 and runners left on first and third.

The forth inning was calm and quick. The top of the fifth a walk, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases for Travelers Rest. Another hit and a sacrifice fly would cut the Raiders lead in half by the time the Devil Dogs were done. Both teams continued to battle to the bottom of the sixth. Rooke Crouch doubled to center driving in Mike Spiers to add the seventh run with no outs. Gray Tollison, traded places with Crouch after his hit bounced back in off the top of the fence. The Devil Dogs played dead and the final score was 8-3 Greenville.
Raider's Over 'Canes
In non-region action at Grover Reid Field the Red Raiders blew away the Wren Hurricanes 14-3 in 4 1/2 innings.

Josh Wright worked quickly in the first, sitting down two of the four who approached the plate. Cameron Reynolds was the first Red Raider at the dish. He was hit by the sixth pitch and would use his fleet feet to cross the plate two batters later for the first fun of the game. Greenville finished the inning ahead 2-0. Three at bats and a double play was the entire top of the second for Wren. Two walks, two doubles and a single plated four more Red Raider runs in the second. After another short Hurricane turn at the plate, the Red Raiders lit it up! With one out Greenville used three walks, three singles and two errors to add three to the board and set the table. Josh Wright approached the plate and proceeded to launch one out for a GRAND SLAM!!! The inning ended 13-0 Greenville. Wren did nothing in the forth, remaining scoreless, and Greenville added one. In a desperate eleventh hour effort the Hurricanes managed to plate three in the fifth but it was not enough to continue the game.

Clark Scolamiero doubled to center with the first at bat of the game against #1 ranked SC Flora looked like it was going to be an exciting game. Although scoreless, our boys got warmed up early and the inning ended with runners stranded on second and third. With short second and third innings; the game remained scoreless after three. In the fourth the Timberwovles battled hard to put three on the board which the Raiders left unanswered for the time being. In the fifth White Knoll added one and the inning ended with Greenville down 4-0. The sixth inning brought hope as the Timberwolves first batter struck out, the second singled and their turn at the dish ended with a double play. The Red Raiders took a hit batter, a walk, and three hits to post two and leave the bases loaded. You could feel the momentum building and the anxiety of wondering if it would be in time. In the top of the seventh White Knoll felt a touch of deja vu, seeing only four batters and ending in a double play. It was now crunch time for Greenville and they powered up. A defensive error and a double brought in their third run. A walk, a wild pitch and a stolen base and a ground out brought in the tying run. Time for extra innings! In the top of the eighth inning with one out and runners on second and third, White Knoll singled to left field. Cameron Reynolds quickly shot the ball to Miguel Vieira at home to tag out the lead runner; Vieira then flipped the ball to Gray Tollison at third to finish the double play and end the top of the inning. Unfortunately the bottom of the inning held two ground outs and one fly out to end the game for Greenville. White Knoll may have won the tournament for the fourth consecutive year but at least they had to battle extra hard for it!

10 innings, 2 homers and a "w"

The temperature dropped as the Red Raiders warmed up; taking Greer 5-1 in extra innings for the 2012 season opener.
The game was long as the temperature had dropped to forty degrees but the end was well worth the wait Monday night. The visiting Greenville High School Red Raiders beat Greer 5-1 but needed extra innings to do so. The only Yellow Jacket run did not come until the bottom of the third inning. The Raiders needed 7 innings to get started tying it up to force extra innings. Greenville’s Steven Wohlrab pitched the first six innings with expertise; he kept the ball around the plate, throwing seventy percent strikes he struck out eight and walked none.
Seven innings is the length of a normal high school game. It took that long for the Red Raider bats to warm up. With a runner on second, Clark Scolamiero doubled to drive in Corbin Singleton and tie the game. Rooke Crouch tossed two innings of shutout ball in the seventh and eighth; striking out four, walking one and surrendering only one hit. With the score tied at one in the tenth inning, Josh Wright came to the plate and tripled, bringing home Cameron Reynolds. This boost from Wright was just what The Raiders needed. JV Raiders Kick-off Season

JV –vs- Greer @ Greer

The JV season began with a cold, cold night with a visit to Greer. Unable to shake the cold early on,
our JV Raiders couldn’t post a run in at the top of the first inning. and returned that favor to Greer at the bottom of the first. GHS pitcher Chayce Torres, took the mound and returned the favor with a k, aided a diving catch in the outfield by Lucas Coan, and a scoop and throw to first base by third baseman Philip Bryant.
In the second, Ben Peden got things started with a single. He advanced to second with a single by Corbin Singleton. Noah Smith hit to deep right bringing in Ben. Weston McDonald pushed in another score. Two separate over throws to third by the catcher allowed Noah and Weston to score.

The second batter hit to deep right, and Noah Smith was there once again to make the catch. The third batter singled. Raiders 1

As the sun set on The Grover so did the pre season for the Raiders. Greenville completed their pre season in a DP scrimmage vs. Boiling Springs. Greenville fell hard to the Bull Dogs 12-1 despite Taylor McCuen’s two hit day at the dish. Things began promising as Raider Steven Wohlrab gave the visitors fits while on the mound. Boiling Springs managed only one hit off of Wohlrab, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two during his three innings of work.
The top of the fourth inning saw Clark Scolamiero dive off the mound to stop a hard hit grounder for the second out. Four batters later, with bases loaded, a well-placed fly ball to left was caught by Michael Spiers to end the inning.
Mid-way through the fifth inning saw Evan Smith come in for relief to end the bleeding. With the help of the Red Raider defense the next three batters were retired. However, 2 walks, 3 singles and 2 wild pitches early in the inning resulted in 4 runs for Boiling Springs to give them the edge.
The sixth saw 2 walks and a HR bringing in three runs for the Bulldogs additionally a hit batter resulted in one more to put Boiling Springs up 8-0 over Greenville.
In the bottom of the sixth Cameron Reynolds single resulted in the only Red Raider run of the day. A single, a walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Boiling Springs to add two more to the board in the 7th.
Now the real fun begins as the Raiders prepare for the regular season and beyond.

Laurens 2
Greenville 8

Tuesday night Mother Nature was much kinder to the baseball fans. With Greenville hosting Laurens at Grover Reid field. Our Red Raiders looked really good through the entire game. Their consistent effort paid off as they collected a pre season victory. The top of the first inning saw Laurens scored two runs before a third out was recorded as Drew Davenport put the finishing touches on a tag out during a pickle. The bottom of the first was exciting as Gray Tollison doubled with two outs to clear the bases putting Greenville ahead 3-2. The second and third innings were short on both sides and included an awesome catch by Cameron Reynolds at the left field fence. In the bottom of the fourth Greenville got things cranked up once again. The first three batters got on and scored thanks to two hits, a defensive error and a lot of offensive teamwork; ending it with Greenville up 6-2. The fifth and the top of the sixth went by rather quickly with a total of twelve batters. Excitement could be felt building by the home crowd as the bottom of sixth started with a double to the fence by Cody Mitchell followed by the second and third batters reaching base on a single and an error; two more runs were generated before ending the inning. With three up, three down in the seventh, the Laurens Raiders did not have a chance to do anything; leaving the final score 8-2 Greenville.

Red Raiders Battle but are Bested by Byrnes 11-6

On a non baseball like evening in Duncan SC at Brynes High, the Raiders were put into a deep freeze by superb pitching and very unfriendly weather. Senior Rooke Crouch was seemingly the only one unaffected by the weather being perfect at the dish, going 4-4. Crouch doubled in the second and fourth innings and singled in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn't enough to get past the Rebels, as the Raiders lost 11-6 in seven plus frames. The end of the second inning found the Red Raiders up 2-0 thanks in part to four Byrnes strike outs delivered by Steven Wohlrab. The Byrnes Rebels worked to end the third inning in a tie. One word describes the fourth inning: ugly. In the top of the fourth, Crouch’s hit made him the only Greenville play to reach base that inning. Byrnes used the “any way on” method and it worked for nine batters. Cody Mitchell went in to the mound in an attempt to stop the damage. The inning ended four batters later but the seven run damage was done. The Rebels ending the fourth up 9-2. Evan Smith took the mound for the fifth and sixth. In the top of the sixth with two outs and bases loaded Taylor McCuen doubled to center to drive in two runs and put a runner on third. The bottom of the sixth generated some hope with the Rebels going three up – three down for a short side. Unfortunately Greenville was unable to produce in the seventh. Other notable performances include Josh Wright crossing the plate twice. The pitching staff of Wohlrab, Edwards, Mitchell, Smith, and Scolamiero recorded 9k’s and 2 bb’s.Although they battled hard the rest of the game, the Red Raiders just could not overcome the damage done early. Join the Raiders on Tuesday the 21st, when they welcome Laurens High to Grover Reid Field.
But hey, it is still preseason!

A Beautiful Saturday at Grover Reid Field!

Thank you to all who helped Saturday to get the Home of the Red Raiders ready for the 2012 season. Coach Scolamiero already had the field looking great! Thanks Coach for the inspiration! A fantastic group of parents and coaches worked several hours and their efforts are greatly appreciated! Painting, weed eating, brick and mortar repair, leaf blowing, sweeping and several other talents were used to provide the beautiful results. More improvements are coming, so be sure to watch the field for them!
In addition to work there was also some fun! The beautiful spring like day saw Coach Scolamiero take the mound in the first inning and continue to feed the pitching machine through all fifty as our boys played their annual fundraising Fifty Inning Game. They hit, they ran, they scored, and they even got to goof off a little! The fans even came out to support them and a good day was had by all!

Preseason Peek vs Woodmont
Won 9-2

The 2012 edition of GHS Red Raiders took to the field for the first time to face Woodmont High School on a cold and windy Saturday morning. Saturday was definitely far from baseball weather. Both teams started as cold as the weather offensively. Josh Wright took the mound for the Raiders and took control of the game, holding Woodmont scoreless through 3. He also provided a key spark offensively going 2 for 3, which included a 3 run blast to begin the scoring for the Raiders. Gray Tollison also looked sharp at the plate (3/4) and had several nifty plays at third. The Raiders continued their dominance from the mound as Mason Edwards pumped in strike after strike in the fourth and fifth innings. The bats warmed up unlike the weather as the Raiders began stringing hits together and capitalizing on Wildcats mistakes. Building a healthy lead as the Red Raiders added two each inning to bring their lead to nine. The Raider pitching staff continued to pound the zone as Evan Smith faced the minimum in the 6th and Steven Wohlrab fanned 2 in 7th. Grant Cox closed out the final inning of play. The Raiders are next in action on Tuesday at Byrnes High for their second scrimmage of the season.
