South Amboy looking for postseason tourney success February 3, 2011 suburban.gmnews.com Suburban Newspaper-Old Bridge*Sayreville BYWARREN RAPPLEYEA Correspondent The South Amboy High School girls basketball team found itself down 17-4 early against Bound Brook, and with a 4-3 record at the time, the Lady Governors’ season seemed to be heading toward inconsistency. But a furious rally cut the lead to three points at the half, and the Lady Guvs went on to win, 38-36, for the first of South Amboy’s run of eight wins in nine games. Jillian Webber led the comeback and topped her team with 18 points, and Kait Hubbard and Catie Mota added seven points apiece.
Now 10-4, Coach Rob Halsey’s team has already qualified for the NJSIAA Central Group I sectional tourney and should get a relatively high seed. “It took a little while for this team to come together,” the first-year coach said. ”Now the chemistry is there, and the girls are seeing all their hard work pay off.”
Webber and Hubbard, South Amboy’s cocaptains, have been forces throughout the campaign. Webber averages 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks a game. She scored 20 points in the Lady Guvs’ 54-51 victory over Timothy Christian and 19 in wins against both Keansburg and East Brunswick Tech. Hubbard, a shooting guard who can move the ball, averages 12 points and five assists. She picked up 13 points in the victory over Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) Gold Division rival Timothy Christian and led the way with 16 against E.B. Tech.“They’re our leaders, and they just go out and get the job done game after game,” Halsey said. “We have a lot of good young players, and Jillian and Kait have set the standard.” One of those players is point guard Nicole Burns, who has gotten better and more comfortable with each game. The sophomore averages nine points and five-plus assists. She had 13 points in the Timothy Christian win and 11 in the victory over E.B. Tech. Another is sophomore guard Andie Garcia, who is playing more as the season progresses. Garcia hit a pair of three-pointers against E.B. Tech, the second with just 14 seconds remaining to give her team a 39-37 victory.
Junior forward Catie Mota and sophomore guard Paulina Musialek provide grit and aggressiveness. Mota, who averages five points and is solid under the hoop, suffered a broken elbow in the Keansburg game. Halsey is hoping she’ll be back for the GMC and state sectional tourneys. Musialek, one of the team’s top defenders, is out with an illness but is day to day, the coach said. Sophomore forward Emily O’Rourke and centers Ashley Register and Raquel Ortiz, along with a pair of freshman guards, Michelle Escalante and Sabrina Myers, give the Lady Guvs a strong group of reserves.“With two starters out right now, they’ll have more of a chance to step up,” said Halsey, whose team was slated to visit Henry Hudson Regional on Tuesday and host Piscataway Tech yesterday afternoon.
The coach, who previously served as head boys coach at E.B. Tech and an assistant at St. John Vianney, Point Pleasant Boro, J.F.K. Iselin, and Wardlaw, believes his team can make a strong run in both the GMC and the NJSIAA Central Group I tourneys. “This is a great group of really dedicated and hardworking kids,” Halsey said. “I’m very proud of what they have done.”

Kaitlyn’s competitiveness and drive during the games led the Lady Governors to a #6 seed and a home game in the NJSIAA playoffs against Henry Hudson. Kaitlyn’s determination can be summed up in this way by Coach Halsey, “Kait Hubbard was a pleasure to coach and true Captain! Many games she had played not at 100% but never complained and put up incredible numbers especially when we needed them. She was a true clutch player.” Congratulations Kaitlyn on being named the Athlete of the Month for February!
