Great Season
In two of the three events that our athlete's qualified for at Regionals a record was broken and another record was tied. The 1600m relay cut 4 1/2 seconds of their previous school record that was set one week earlier. This team was only .04 seconds from making it to the State Meet. Only one step behind Floyd Central. Chris Rios also tied the school record in the 110 high hurdles running a time of 16.16.

GIRLS’ TRACK
This is another Henryville team that ran its way up the standings a year ago, snapping Borden’s six-year run as champions of the Hoosier Hills Conference.
This year’s installment looks just as strong for Henryville, as 22 girls have joined the roster, including all-state selection Maggie Gilstrap and a regional qualifier in Katie Spellman.
Gilstrap advanced to state in both the long jump and 400-meter run last spring and will likely also compete in the 100 and 200 this spring.
Spellman, a semistate qualifier in cross country last fall, will tackle the 800 and 1,600. Two other distance runners, Leslie Thomas and Shelby Howard, add depth for the Hornets, and shot-put and discus thrower Leslie Brishaber was an all-conference selection last season.
“Coming off the success that we had last year has really created a lot of enthusiasm throughout the program,” said coach Josh Conrad. “Our numbers are strong again this season and we hope we can continue what we were able to do a year ago and advance kids in the postseason.”
BOYS’ TRACK
The Hornets also snapped Borden’s run of dominance at the SAC on the boys’ side, eclipsing the Braves to end a three-year run of conference crowns.
The MVP of that day’s conference-winning effort was senior Mat Smith, and he is expected to contend for a regional berth in the 100 this season. Another potential regional qualifier is junior hurdler Chris Rios, who was a regional qualifier in the 300 hurdles last year.
“Those two guys and some of our relays have the potential to advance,” said Henryville coach Joe Farmer. “We feel as if we are very strong in our sprint events.”
Senior Brandon McGloshen is the Hornets’ top distance runner and will compete in the 1,600, while Cody McCutcheon will fill the 800 and Kyle Liburd will be the top option in the 200.
“We lost four seniors from last year, but we have quality performers back,” said Farmer. “We have high hopes for the season.”

Mat Smith placed 21st out of 139 in the 55m dash. He was one hundredth of a second from qualifying in his second event. The boys distance medley was only .12sec from qualifying for the state meet. The team included Brandon McGloshen, Michael Webb, Cody McCutcheon, and Ricky Boyd

BOYS TRACK: Henryville earns first SAC title
By MIKE HUTSELL
Mike.Hutsell@newsandtribune.com
Henryville boys’ track coach Joey Farmer got a nice cool shower to cap a historic day for the Hornet program.
Just seconds after being announced as the Southern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and helping to lead his team to its first-ever victory in the 33 years of the conference meet, Farmer was doused with a victory shower by his squad on the track at Corydon Central High School.
That was one of few things cooling down the Hornets, who wound up winning eight events — including sweeps in all three relays and two hurdle events — and rolled to first with 145 points, far ahead of runner-up South Central’s 116.
“Coming in, we were seeded to win but you never quite know what will happen until its all over,” said Farmer. “It feels good, these guys have focused on this all year.”
Mat Smith captured the Most Valuable Runner award overall for Henryville. He won the 100-meter dash and had third-place efforts in the long jump, high jump and pole vault, tallying a combined 28 combined points in the victory.
The performance placed him slightly ahead of teammate Chris Rios — who captured both the 110- and 300-hurdles and also ran a leg on the 400 relay team for the Hornets.
“All our guys did a nice job,” said Farmer. “I can’t say I knew what was going to happen but our guys all performed as well as they could have so I’m very excited for them.”
Wins for Henryville also came from Kyle Liburd in the 200 and Shaun Dolbeare in the 400.
Borden’s quest for a fourth-straight conference crown came up short, as the Braves placed third overall with 101 points. That included two victories by distance runner Andrew Abbott in the 1,600 and 3,200 and another by Kyle Bowling in the pole vault.
New Washington finished fifth, totaling 46 points

GIRLS TRACK: Henryville captures track title
By MIKE HUTSELL
Mike.Hutsell@newsandtribune.com
The day started with a question mark for the Henryville girls’ track team at the Southern Athletic Conference meet.
It ended with a huge exclamation point.
After seeing top-seeded Maggie Gilstrap scratch in three attempts at the long jump early — many thought losing those 10 points would put a huge dent in the Hornets chances of capturing their first-ever girls’ championship trophy.
Turned out it wasn’t even close.
The Hornets rode huge efforts by Gilstrap and fellow junior Katie Spellman to the top spot — finishing with 130 points, well ahead of second-place Crothersville’s 100 in the overall standings.
“Sometimes, when you get into a close meet something may happen that you don’t expect,” said Hornet head coach Josh Conrad. “But you have to overcome that kind of stuff and we definitely were able to do just that.”
Gilstrap didn’t hang her head after her early miscues — she bounced back to finish with three individual first-place finishes (100- 200- and 400-meter runs) and broke a 22-year old meet record in the 400 with a time of 59.61 seconds.
“I don’t know what happened (in the long jump),” Gilstrap said. “I was awful in that. I didn’t want it to bother me though. I still had other races I could win and I didn’t want that to affect me.”
Spellman started her day by winning the best race of the afternoon — barely holding off Borden’s Candace Bender for first in the 1,600 by 0.06 seconds at the finish line.
“That was a doozy,” said the junior. “I thought I had won but all I heard was people yelling for her at the end so I didn’t know until they announced it. I don’t I’ve run many races that close before.”
She also took first in the 800 and scored a third-place effort in the 3,200 — totaling 26 total points for her 3 1/2 miles of running.
“I don’t know why I picked those three races,” said Spellman, who spent most of the 3,200 joking with several onlookers while competing. “I knew I couldn’t get to the front of that last one so I just wanted to make it as fun as it could be.”
Along with the five combined wins by Gilstrap and Spellman, Henryville also claimed first in the 3,200 relay with the squad of Tara Murphy, Shelby Hodge, Jena Miller and Leslie Thomas, while Hodge won the 3,200 title.
“Katie and Maggie are awesome but they didn’t do this alone,” said Conrad, who was voted SAC coach of the year following the win. “Our distance runners did really well and we scored some points in just about every event, which we knew we needed.”
Borden had its six-year run of championships snapped as it finished third with 92 points. The Braves finished the day by winning the 1,600 relay and also saw wins by Bethany Burrier (high jump) and Bender in the pole vault.
