To pre-treat/wash your JL color-blocked garment: For best results, pre-treat before you use the garment.
Fill a basin with cold water and a small amount of non-bleach detergent. We recommend SportWash by Penguin for best results.
Do not use fabric softeners--fabric softeners will deteriorate Lycra and Spandex, and will restrict the effectiveness of the wicking properties and act as a magnet to dirt.
Drop a single garment in and submerge completely.
Wash it out quickly; do not leave your garment in the water to soak.
Squeeze it to remove excess water, and rinse immediately in another full basin, or in fresh running tap water until water runs clear.
During this process, do not leave your garment in a wad.
Squeeze to remove excess water, and hang to dry.
Follow these steps at least twice, then your garment should be ready to join the rest of your cold-wash laundry.
Hang Dry. Do not use dryer.
If your garment contains Polypropylene (check the content label) note that it boasts the lowest melting temperature of any fiber, so please, puleeeeze don't put it in the dryer. The good news is, that polypropylene also will dry the fastest of any fabric, so hang it in a warm, airy place and you should be good to go in a day or so.
World-class important general things to know
Pre treat each new garment singly—by itself.
When you do move to a machine wash (which is absolutely ok!), wash bright and dark colors with like colors. When using a machine, use cold water (30 degrees centigrade for Europe, just cold setting for Americans)
Be absolutely sure there is no bleach, chlorine bleach, or bleach alternative in your detergent. We recommend SportWash by Penguin for best results.
Do not use fabric softeners--fabric softeners will deteriorate Lycra and Spandex, and will restrict the effectiveness of the wicking properties and act as a magnet to dirt.
When on the road, using shampoo is a good substitute for detergent.
Don't hang garments on lamps to dry, believe it or not, this has been known to start fires.
Do not iron your rowing garments.
Dear HHS Crew Parents,
As our racing season is upon us, so too is the end of the season. As we outlined in our fall meeting, most of our board positions are turning over this June. HHS Crew is run by a volunteer board of parents. Several of you indicated that you would be interested in getting involved, and now would be the time to let us know if this is still true. The board positions are typically for a period of two years, but if we have any parents of juniors who would like to be involved for just one year, we are happy to speak with you. The old adage, many hands make light work, is the cornerstone of how we run this program. Don't worry, no experience is necessary, just a willingness to get involved. This Sunday is our first full team regatta and we invite you to come to Mashpee to see first hand what this program is all about. Please send us an email if we can answer any questions for you about the various board positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Race Coordinator, Hospitality Coordinator, Apparel, and Registrar.
Thanks and see you Sunday!
Reminder....
All rowers should be parking over at the Hingham Beach parking lot and running to LMC. No one should be parking at LMC. The LMC parking lot has quite a bit of traffic coming and going and the facility will be in heavy use by many groups for the spring.
Thank you.
Attention all Photographers!
If you will be taking pictures of various rowers at the meets, please note that we need lots of pictures for the program book. Any good pics of individual rowers you can get would be greatly apprciatied. I just spoke withthe graphic designer who is doing the book and she said for quality purposes, she needs the pictures in jpeg format in the largest size possible. If you want to label your pictures by regatta and put them on a disc-that would be great.
Thanks again for your hlep

April 1, at 7pmThere will be a parents meeting to review the trip details for the HHS Crew trip to Washington College in MD. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 1 at the Whiton Room at the Hingham Public Library.
At that time permission slips will be handed out for completion, the final payment of $300 (first $100 payment was already made) will be due.
The rowers will meet with the coaches separately, this meeting is for parents.

Happy Spring Crew Families!
Now that try-outs have concluded, its time to start focusing on the spring season and feeding all the kids and families at the regattas! Please consider joining me and helping with the Hospitality Committee.
The Hospitality Committee is a great group of parents who enjoy going to the regattas and putting on a great tailgate. If you are worried about committing to day-long regattas -- no worries. We spread out the responsibilities to cover everything from emailing families, driving food to the regatta, set-up or clean-up on individual regatta days, coffee and ice pick-up, and even helping to organize the end of the season Banquet. We have all the tables, tents, grill, tablecloths, paper products etc. and as you know, the families provide the food and drinks...we just need you to make it all run smoothly. Every little bit helps and we would love to have you join us! Please come to this meeting to map out the spring season. Thank you and I'll see you on the 31st! Kathleen Snow

Spring Training 2010 – Washington College, Chestertown, MD
Dear Parents and Rowers,
This coming year, spring recess at the High School is from April 17- April 24. It happens to fall smack in the middle of our short spring rowing season.
In an effort to gain as much water time as possible early in the season, we have decided to organize a trip for our rowing team to Chestertown, Maryland (on the Eastern Shore) where we will row at Washington College using our boats and their facilities http://washingtoncollegesports.com/wrowing/. Our hope is that the athletes in our top two varsity boats (boys and girls) will be able to commit to this important piece of spring training. However, we do understand that many families take vacation together and may already be committed elsewhere. At this point, however, we are seeking early interest from ALL members of the team so that we may determine feasibility and costs.
Details are being finalized. They include the following:
· Depart Hingham in 15 passenger vans on Saturday, April 17.
· Return to Hingham Wednesday night April 21.
· Lodging at Comfort Suites Chestertown, MD. 3-4 students/room
· Food on campus at Washington College
· 8-10 practices and a tentative race
· Cost - $500 or less. Scholarships available.
· Coaches and chaperones will be in charge
Please be reminded that the season begins on March 15. We will have already had one race and will be getting ready for the busiest part of our racing season in May. If you or your son or daughter is in contention for one of the top 2 racing boats, you (they) will be encouraged/invited to go. Several alternates will be selected as well.
For those novices and other rowers who do not make the trip, please know that we hope to make this trip an annual event and practices will be organized in Hingham that week of vacation. While we cannot mandate attendance at these practices, we would like to encourage you (or your athlete) to consider making them a priority. We know this experience will be fun and uniquely important to our highly competitive spring racing season.
By February 1 we would like to know who is planning on attending the trip. We will be sending out an email shortly with more information. Please contact me at mccusker1@comcast.net asap if you have not already done so. Thank you.
Rick McCusker
You may also call with questions. Thank you.
What a great day for the novices yesterday in New Hampshire. Congratulations to all of you who participated in the race. Special thanks to all the parents who helped with the hospitality. Mr. Allen, Mrs. McKeon White, Mrs. Stack, Mr. and Mrs. Kaplan, Mrs. Setian, Mrs. Nielsen, and the parents who helped car pool our group to New Hampshire. Hingham was well represented in the youth 8+ and the youth novice 8+.
Chip Carey coxed his first race on a challenging course. Steven Hughes shoes fell off, Ryder Nelson broke his shoe, Steven Dings caught an absolutely huge crab right in front of the spectators, Austin LeTourney and Ryder Nelson stroked their first races, and Matt 7 didn't crab.
All in all a banner day for Hingham and great preparation for the MPSRA race in 2 weeks.
Mrs. Nielsen took a bunch of pictures and has placed them on the site below.
All novices should plan to row Wed, Thurs, Friday, and Saturday this week.
First, i would like to thank all of you who will be participating in tomorrow's New Hampshire Championship Regatta.
The departure of so many of our crew for the SATs this Saturday has created an opportunity for more rowers to participate in the regatta.
We have 4 boats registered - this means 32 rowers and 4 coxswains. We have no one to spare. In fact, some of our athletesmay have to row twice.
The race is approximately 3 miles long and is quite arduous.
Information can be found from the host at:
Disclaimer: For all of our crews who have limited time on the water and are just getting up to speed, this will be a LEARNING experience. This is just to set your expectations. The race will be fun and exciting for the kids - boring for spectators.
Thank you all. Please call me directly tomorrow with questions. 781-254-9700. I will be at the race site tomorrow at 7:30. Thank you again,
Doug McCaig
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who helped us today at the Textile River Regatta. It was a great day and Hingham was well represented - improving in every category in which we competed.
The Textile River Regatta has grown to become one of the pre-eminent High School regattas in the Northeast. We competed successfully in the youth 4+ (with 2 entries) and the youth 8+ (with 3 entries). There were entrants from all over the Northeast. The regatta counted nearly 600 boats. Hingham earned a 5th and 12th spot among other improved finishes.
Special thanks to our wonderful hospitality crew including Mrs. Snow for her organization, Mr. and Mrs. King, Mr.and Mrs.. McKeon-White, Mr. and Mrs. Alvarado, Mrs Maisto and Mr. and Mrs. Smoot. Dick Burbridge was a great help in transporting our equipment to Lowell and Mrs. Rowell deserves thanks for arranging our transportation.
The Textile River Regatta has become a great tradition for Hingham High School Crew. We have been improving every year.
Thank you everyone and particularly our novice helpers Nick Nielsen, Joe Johnson, Nora Happ, and Ryan Boretti for a fun and successful day.
Coaches McCaig and Shea.
As many of you know, you teammate, Robert Danis has been diagnosed with Lymphoma, a type of cancer. Robert is undergoing treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This Saturday during homecoming we will have a row-a-thon to raise money for Dana Farber.
62 members of the boys and girls rowing team participated in the row-a-thon to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the name of our team mate Robert Danis. This was a great showing from our rowing team and showed the type of support we, as a team, have in the community. On behalf of Robert, we would like to thank all of you who participated in any way. Mrs. Aborn, Mr. McCusker, Mrs. McKeon-White and all of our team deserve thanks for the effort. And the grand total raised is.......$3,222.96 !!!
Great job to all who participated in any way and donated.

Do your homework and get ready for the season. If you are not involved in Ro*Fast, every interested team member needs to be getting himself or herself ready for the Spring. As of next week the days will be getting longer, and we will begin our race preparation in earnest. We are all looking forward to a great season. Mr. McCaig
