CWU team camp concludes; weight room now open
Central Washington University was the location for Highland's team football camp for the second straight year and by all impressions it was a successful five days.
Traveling with 15 players, the Scotties showed well against 2A (R.A. Long, Toppenish), 1A (Cashmere, Chewelah, Stevenson) and 2B (Lind-Ritzville, Tacoma Baptist, White Swan) schools at the camp. Another Highland opponent was Kenai, Alaska, a four-time (2002-2005) state champion in the small-school division (under 850 enrolled) in their state. Kittitas and Pomeroy attended the camp as well.
Players spent two sessions a day working out in individual offensive and defensive drills with CWU coaches and players and then scrimmaged at the end of both morning and afternoon practices. Participating in the camp were seniors Kyle Belton and Donte Cope; juniors Billy Gellerson, Tyler Hakala, Forrest Kopta, Robin Kovis, Alex Laughery, Matthew Newman, William Packard and Kavan Stoltenow; sophomores Riley Calhoun-Sharp, Antonio Gonzalez and Joe Scott; and freshmen Josue Silva and Trey Trepanier.
"As a team, I believe we came away from this experience with many positives," head coach Shane Roy said. "We competed on a consistent basis in our scrimmages and during position drills and our kids seem to be head-and-shoulders above where they've been in the past, which is encouraging.
"We have defintely grown up and are closing the gap, but there is still plenty of work to be done."
A highlight for the Highland squad was lining up against Cashmere, the defending Class 1A state champion (13-0). The Bulldogs year-in and year-out are a state power and are the type of team the Scotties will go up against if and when they break into the postseason. In a physical scrimmage, Roy and his players came away pleased with their performance.
"Last year, there was no way we could have given them (Cashmere) the type of the competition they wanted," Roy said. "But now that the kids are older and more sure of themselves, they did some things that they are now coming to expect. We executed well on offense, but what really stood out was our performance defensively.
"We were physical and tackled well, and that's what you have to bring to the table on every play when you match up against schools like that."
CWU camp ended a healthy three weeks of action for the Scotties, who held two weeks of practice after school and also saw them compete in the second annual Ellensburg High varsity passing tournament. Highland defeated White Swan and Kittitas, tied Connell in a short showcase, and narrowly lost to Ellensburg after missing a 2-point conversion for the victory. Other games were against Cle Elum, Onalaska and Kamiak.
"Again, we came away from the 7-on-7 better for the action," Roy said. "Our kids performed well for the first time in that type of setting and we had some real bright spots - you can tell the difference in the kids from last year to now.
"Our guys have been able to line up and compete well against Cashmere and Connell this June, and those two are without a doubt among the top three or four 1A programs around. It gives us quite a bit of confidence heading into the fall."
Weight training starts June 22nd and will run through August 13th for all athletes in the high school. Morning times are from 7:15-8:15 AM and PM sessions last from 6:30-7:30. The weight room will be open Monday through Thursday.
