RON MARSHALL
October 26, 2009
It is with sadness that the Pilots learned of the recent death of Ron Marshall, one of the great names of British baseball.
Ron managed Great Britain and his son Barry and grandsons Gavin Marshall, Chris and Matty Radge have all played/helped out our club and the forerunner Hull Baseball Club. Our deepest sympathy and good wishes go out to all Ron's family and friends.
TRAINING/NEW SEASON - UPDATED
It is hoped that Spring training will begin Sunday mornings from early February 2010 on the newly laid all weather 5 a-side pitches at Sydney Smith School, Anlaby.
Training on grass will start on the diamond at the school when the clocks are adjusted to British Summer Time, usually mid-March.
New players or experienced players wanting to re-start are assured of a warm welcome, the club philosophy is to give all club members of whatever age or ability plenty of game time provided they train and this has served them well to date.
2009 SEASON REVIEW
The Pilots struggled in 2009, having a below 500 record for the first time.
Early season plans were undone as the appointed team manager and assistant manager Chris Radge and Tom Lee moved down South with work.
Unavailabilty of key players for key games coupled with experienced players getting older and youngsters being thrown in at the deep end wasn't a recipe for success and so it proved.
Game highlights were for the second season running a brave one-run loss away at league runners-up Liverpool with a depleted squad and a terrific one run win away at Halton.
The team scraped into the A play-offs at Croydon and succumbed to a one-run semi-final loss in an exciting game against Essex.
Good pitching was regularly let down by poor defence and all too often good work by the top of the order was undermined by the regular failure of the bottom of the order to get on base.
With many of their youngsters getting plenty of game-time in 2009 the Pilots hope the experience gained will stand the team in good stead for 2010.
