Seniors
I am extremely proud of the seniors who have established another solid year of how we want to do things within the basketball program. They all talked with the underclassmen and gave them sound advice about life and basketball after the Western Dubuque game. This helps us move on to the next chapter and begin the steps to get better for next year. I was very blessed to coach a group of kids who played their hearts out all the time and were great role models for the younger kids in our community. They also represented Oelwein School in a positive light with their sportsmanship all year. We can all learn from these five with a simple example of how they continued to dive on the floor, take charges, play defense, support their teammates even when they were down. Thanks Derek, Brad, Josh, Cody, and Bret for all you have meant to this team and program.
Words from Coach K
Beyond Basketball is a great read for anyone not just basketball fans. In this book Coach K outlines some key words for success. In reading one of the chapters titled Motivation Coach K talks about something his mom once told him. She said something to the effect that he should make sure he gets on the right bus. She was not referring to an actual bus but was trying to teach him that he needed to surround himself with the right people. I think once you surround yourself with the right people, with common interests and goals in mind. Then the motivation takes care of itself. Each person knows what they bring to the table and are supported and lifted up by the other people on that bus. This year we have a team that continues to motivate and pick each other up after being knocked down. The last line of the chapter brings everything in perspective, "when we motivate each other, our bus usually end up at a great destination."

Words from John Wooden
I am re-reading a book called "My Personal Best" by John Wooden. In this book I am reminded of something that Coach Wooden is adamant about which is doing your very best. He writes in his book that his father used say that you should not try to be "better than somebody else, but never cease trying to be the best you can be. You have control over that. The other you don't." So many outside factors can try and get in the way of what the goals you have for yourself or your team. If you never stop trying to be the best that you can be it helps weather the storm of obstacles and challenges and somehow things workout in the end. We are very thankful for the ability to come and work hard everyday to make ourselves and each other better.
