13/14 Baseball

January 27, 2015

I have been receiving many emails and questions regarding a child's eligibility to play baseball at HYR or for the Jags if they are league age 13/14.  So I wanted to offer some clarification to this child age. To be eligible to play for the Jags baseball team which is registering through until January 31, the child must be in 7th or 8th grade at Highland Hills Middle School Only.  This is a joint program with the Floyd Central coaching staff and HYR.  Although games will be played at HYR, it is not an HYR Little League program.  This program will maintain its own website, calendars, coaching staff, and other pertinent information at

There are some parents that would like their child to be eligible to play through HYR and Little League this year.  We as a board are considering offering a 13/14 program.  Due to the number of youth that will be playing for the HHMS Jags there will be a limited number of youth available to play the full season. Our board will meet again on February 15 and this will be a discussion we will have at this meeting.  Please stay tuned to our website after February 15 for an official decision.

Sorry for any confusion this may be causing this year.  Please be patient as we work through all the new programs along with the FKCC merger this year.

UPDATED Information Regarding League Age 11/12 and 13/14 boys

January 13, 2015

Our board made a couple of finalizations to the league for 2015.  First, We will potentially offer a 46/60 baseball program in addition to our intermediate 50/70 for the 11/12 year old boys.  Our main league is the intermediate 50/70 baseball league.  The 46/60 is an additional league that can be played for an additional cost.  You cannot choose the 46/60 league alone.  Every 11/12 boy must play the intermediate 50/70 program.  The 46/60 is only for eligibility at end of season for the all star team in 46/60 baseball. If we have enough child interest to have this league it will be less formal than our regular 50/70 intermediate league.

Second, If your child is league age 13/14 then he must go to to register.  This registration closes on January 31st.  Please register your child on this site as soon as possible.  This program is running on a completely different calendar than HYR regular season.

General Notes About Merger and Registration

With the merger of Floyds Knobs Community Club (FKCC) and Highlander Youth Recreation (HYR), we have tried to keep both leagues at an equal number of players based on previous history and also tried to accommodate as many parents as possible with the options for hopefully limited travel.  In order to try and keep things simple during your registration process, please be aware of the following items prior to registering your child.

Softball Notes of Importance:

  1. All girls must play at Floyds Knobs Community Club.
  2. Girls must use the Little League softball age chart to determine your child’s playing age for 2015.  (There is no change to the age cut-off date used in the past for girls, but we wanted to make this clear because there is a change that is affecting boys as noted below.)
  3.  If you are interested in coaching softball this year please apply online when registering .  If you are asked to coach you will be subject to a background check as required by Little League.

Baseball Notes Importance:

  1. Boys must use the Little League baseball age chart to determine your child’s playing age for 2015.  There have been some drastic playing age changes for 2015.  Most importantly this will affect boys league age 9 and under.  Many boys that would normally have been league age 8 for 2015 will now be league age 9 and in kid pitch baseball.  Because of this change in league age we are hosting two different leagues in the minors (9/10) division.  Normally we would combine 9 and 10 year old boys.  However we are trying to ease the transition for many of these younger boys moving up into kid pitch.  So for 2015 league age 9 boys will only play other league age 9 boys.  League age 10 boys will only play league age 10 boys.
  2. When registering your boy league age 8 and under you will have the opportunity to select your home facility for 2015.  You can select HYR or Floyds Knobs for their baseball facility.  This will be the practice facility and game facility for most games.
  3. If your son is league age 9 and up then they will play all of their baseball at HYR facility in Georgetown this year.
  4. If you have a son league age 11 or 12 they will register for intermediate 50/70 baseball.  There is information on the website at discussing the rules and specific bats allowed in this league.  Please take the time to read through the Q&A and the overview PDF to gain a better understanding about the league.
  5. If you are interested in coaching baseball this year please apply online when registering .  If you are asked to coach you will be subject to a background check as required by Little League.

50/70 Intermediate Baseball Information. New for 2015!!!

We are excited about offering a new baseball program this year at HYR.  Known as 50/70 Intermediate.  This program is for league age 11 to 12 year old players.  The game in this division is played very similar to "travel baseball" or real baseball.  The base paths are moved from traditional 60' for 11/12 to 70'.  The pitching distance changes from traditional 46' for 11/12 to 50'.  Lead offs are allowed, pitch counts change,  different bats are in use, and the game should be very exciting.  We as a league have always felt there is a better way to transition middle school age children from 46/60 to the 60/90 of the varsity field.  Offering the 50/70 division allows us to offer an easier transition for the boys. On the left hand side of the Menu there are two quick links explaining the new 50/70 intermediate baseball program that HYR is offering this year.  Please take the time to look through it.

Bat Rules for this division are as follows:

The Key here is the use of up to 2 5/8" diameter bats.  And any bats containing composite in the barrel must have the BBCOR stamp no matter what barrel diameter selected.

Intermediate (50-70) Division and Junior League

It shall not be more than 34 inches in length; nor more than 2 5/8 inches in diameter, and if wood, not less than fifteen-sixteenths (15/16) inches in diameter (7/8 inch for bats less than 30”) at its smallest part. All composite barrel bats shall meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard, and such bats shall be so labeled with a silkscreen or other permanent certification mark. The certification mark shall be rectangular, a minimum of a half-inch on each side and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color.
