The way the bye weeks work we will not have practice on Monday or Tuesday and there will be no game on Saturday morning. The whole week is off. I tried to work around all holidays so that people would not have to miss. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Welcome to the Fall 2010 Session of the

Irmo Ice Hockey Federation House League!

This document is to give you, the parents, some information and insight on the Youth Ice Hockey Program, how it’s organized, and what you can do to help.

The Irmo Ice Hockey Federation, or IIHF, is administered by the IIHF Parent Advisory Board, which consists of volunteers who try to make the program fun, exciting, and worthwhile.  The Board is strictly volunteer.  The Plex does not run the ice hockey program, other than providing the ice and the Director of Hockey Operations.  The fee that you pay each session goes to the Plex and covers the ice time, pucks, and referees.  That is the only thing that your fees are used for.  None of the money for registration goes to the IIHF Board.  The IIHF Board provides jerseys, socks, trophies, yearbooks, and end of season party activities through funds raised by donations, fund-raisers, and sponsorships.

Coaching is also done solely by volunteers and is coordinated through Brian Bauman, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations.  All of our coaches are certified for the appropriate level by USA Hockey, and have undergone training to enable them to be able to teach hockey.  Most of the coaches play in the men’s league and have many years of experience.

Regular information on upcoming events, games, fundraising and sponsorship opportunities, and other important items of information will be sent out via email and posted on our website (www.leaguelineup.com/IIHF).  Please check the website on a regular basis, and keep an eye on your inbox for any emails.  If there is a situation where the game or practice must be cancelled for some reason, we will try to get an email out as soon as possible, depending on when we get the notice and the availability of someone to send out the message.  Be aware that there are weeks built in to the schedule where there will not be games or practices.  This is intentional due to known conflicts with other events.

Please remember that the IIHF Board and the coaches are all volunteers.  We have 1 goal in mind – to provide a fun, exciting, and educational hockey program for the youth of the Columbia area.

The Youth House League will run from August 23 through December 19th.  There will be 2 practices per week and 1 game per week.  The schedule for practices and games is:

Practices:         Monday

                                    Learn-To-Play/Mites/Squirts               6:30pm-7:30pm

                                    Pee-Wees/Bantams/Midgets               7:45pm-8:45pm

                        Tuesday

                                    Mites/Squirts                                       6:30pm-7:30pm

                                    Pee-Wees/Bantams/Midgets               7:45pm-8:45pm

Games:            Saturday

Mites/Squirts                                       7:45am-8:45am

Pee-Wees/Bantams/Midgets               9:00am-10:00am

Please have your child ready to go out on the ice 10 minutes before the session starts.  A good rule of thumb is to be at the rink 30 minutes before to get dressed.  Please make sure to use the locker rooms for changing.  Parents are responsible for making sure that the locker room is clean after their child is finished.  We have had problems with vandalism in the past, so please help us make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Frequently Asked Questions

1)      What does my fee cover?  Where does my money go?

a.       The fee that you pay each session is paid to the Plex, and it covers ice time only.  Other items, such as jerseys, socks, trophies, yearbooks, and end of season party activities are paid for by the IIHF through money raised by fundraisers, donations, and sponsorships.   The Plex provides the use of the facilities (Ice and locker rooms), pucks, referees, and the Director of Hockey Operations/Head Coach only.  Anything else is provided by the IIHF board at no additional cost, funds permitting.

2)      Why do we only get 1 jersey each year?

a.       As mentioned in item 1 above, your registration fee does not cover jerseys.  The funds available to the IIHF board are limited to what we can raise, so we can only provide 1 jersey a year at most.  This year, the jerseys are being provided through a special program with USA Hockey.  Unfortunately, the players will be unable to keep the jerseys this year because we do not have the funds to purchase jerseys at this time.

3)      Who are the coaches?  Are they certified?

a.       With the exception of Coach Brian, all of our coaches are volunteers – parents like yourself.  The list of coaches can be found on the IIHF website.  We are in the process of updating the website and the coaching information as time allows.  All coaches are required to be certified through USA Hockey.

4)      How can I become a coach?

a.       That’s great that you want to be a coach!  We’d love to have you out on the ice.  To be a coach, you have to be certified through USA Hockey, which means you need to attend one their hockey clinic.  Clinic information can be found on the USAhockey.com website.  We are hoping to get some hockey clinics held here in Columbia.  Keep an eye on your email for an announcement if we are successful..  USA Hockey is currently changing their certification levels and requirements, so please speak with Coach Brian for more information

5)      Why do the kids play cross ice games instead of full length?

a.       Playing Cross Ice is highly recommended by USA Hockey.  Studies have shown that children playing cross-ice actually gain more from the experience than those playing full ice.  200 feet, the length of the ice from end to end, is a daunting distance, especially for younger and/or inexperienced players.  They don’t get the benefit of being in the action or handling the puck as much as they would if they played in the 85 foot cross ice distance.  Playing cross ice increases the chances of a player being involved in plays and having opportunities to handle the puck.  We are planning to play 3 weeks of cross ice games and 1 week of full ice games each month.

6)      Why doesn’t the House League have games with other house leagues?

a.       We would love to.  We have done it in the past, but not as often as we would like.  We’ve had some cases where planned games had to be cancelled because of a lack of interest by players in our league.   We also have not had anybody willing to take charge of coordinating those games.    If you are interested and willing to help us out by contacting other organizations and making arrangements for exchange games, please let the Board know!

7)      Why isn’t there advertising for the ice hockey program?

a.       We don’t have any control over what advertising the Plex does for the Ice Hockey program.  The IIHF does not have the funds for formal advertising.  We do rely on word of mouth, as well as encourage the kids to wear their hockey jerseys with the logo on them.  In the past, we have had a presence in local parades.  We would love to get information out to the schools as well as the general public.  If you have ideas and are willing to help coordinate advertising, please let us know!

8)      Why are there so many sessions of hockey?

a.       The hockey sessions are set by the Plex, and the IIHF has no say in when they run, how long they run, or how much they cost.  Shorter seasons do have the advantage of allowing kids opportunities to play other sports without having to pick and choose, as well as keeping the cost lower if you can only play part of the time.

9)      When are the Board meetings?  Can anyone attend?

a.       Board meetings are held infrequently.  Because we are all volunteers, it can be difficult to get everyone together.  Even during hockey practices, several of the board members are coaches and need to be out on the ice.  A lot of discussion is done via email, but we do hold board meetings on occasion.  Any parent is more than welcome to attend the board meetings and offer opinions/suggestions.  Board meeting dates/times will be announced on the website and in email.

10)    My company would love to sponsor the IIHF.  Who do I need to talk to?

a.       That’s great!  We can certainly use sponsorship money, as 100% of it goes to support the kids.  We use sponsorship money to pay for jerseys, socks, trophies, and end of season activities.  If you would like to help sponsor the IIHF, please contact Kim Potts (temporarily until we find someone to be in charge of Sponsorship).

11)  How can I help?

a.       That’s the question I love most to answer.  We need any help we can.  The Board consists of 8 volunteers who devote what time we can to the program.  Being volunteers, we have jobs and other interests/activities that limit what all we can do.  We can always use people to help out in all sorts of ways.  If you would like to volunteer your time and energy, please contact any of the IIHF Board members and let us know.  Examples of help that we are needing are Sponsorship Coordinator, Fundraising Coordinator, Exchange Game Coordinator, Website Administrator, Volunteer coordinator.  We can always find a place to use you!

2010-2011 Fall Session Details
All,

The fall season is fast approaching and I hope that everyone enjoyed their summers. Below you will find all of the information needed to register for the upcoming house league as well as Learn to Play.

There have been some concerns about starting the season two weeks earlier. We have decided to start this session earlier so we do not have conflicts with ice times with the Cyclones and PSC. We have built in bye weeks so that people will not be receiving emails a week prior to when things have been rescheduled.

As always please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the program.  I look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice for a successful and enjoyable season.

2010 - 2011 Youth Hockey Season
To the Irmo Ice Hockey Federation Players and Parents!

Wow!  It's been hot outside!  I don't know about you, but I'm ready to be done with this heat.  Fortunately, it's time to get out of the heat
and back in to the cool where we all belong.

The Fall Hockey Season is starting soon. REAL soon! The season will be starting on August 23 and will run through December 13. We'll be continuing our 2 practices a week and games on Saturday morning. The Plex has been working carefully with the scheduling to eliminate any of the last minute "bumps" from the ice that we've encountered in the past, and they've tried to get any conflicts worked out before the season starts. We should be getting that information out as soon a possible so everyone will know ahead of time if there is a weekend or weekday where hockey won't be happening.

Cost this year for hockey is $275 if you registered before Aug 16, and $300 if you register after. As in the past, USA Hockey membership registration is mandatory to play in the league. We will be enforcing this more strictly this year. Please register all players with USA Hockey at http://www.usahockeyregistration.com/ and forward a copy of the registration confirmation with the registration number and bar code to Kim Potts at KPotts9790@aol.com or bring it to the Plex and hand it to Coach Brian Bauman. The USA Hockey fee is $38.00 payable online. USA Hockey membership is free for players born in 2004 or later, however you must still register and provide confirmation as stated above.
Due to the short notice of the season starting earlier, we won't be able to have our equipment swap before the season begins. We are planning to have it in September at some time, so please gather up any gear that has been outgrown or that you have laying around that you want to donate or sell at the Swap. Further information on that will be forthcoming. If you are a new seller or have forgotten your seller ID number please email Kim Potts at KPotts9790@aol.com and request a seller ID number. All sellers must have an ID number to insure you receive the proceeds from your sales.

In the meantime, if you need gear, please contact Tim Wracker and he will help you as best as he can.

The Parent Advisory Board is looking for people interested and willing to help out with various aspects of running the program.  We particularly need assistance with fund-raising, sponsorship, volunteer coordinating, and financial management. If you are willing to devote a little of your time to help this program grow and be successful, please contact me or any of the other board members.  We can't do it without your help!

Coach Brian will be coming out with information on times for the various age groups and plans for the games. Be on the lookout for that.

And as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions for the upcoming season, please don't hesitate to contact me or any other member of the Advisory Board.

I hope to see everyone on the ice REAL soon!

-Craig Dooley
IIHF Board President

SEASON END PARTY!
Dear players, parents, and coaches.

The end of another session is upon us, and as is tradition, it's time for our year end games and party.  I hope everyone has had a fun and enjoyable Fall and Winter session of youth hockey.  The coaches have
worked hard to provide a quality program for the kids, and I know the kids have all been working hard out there, improving their skills.

To celebrate a successful season, we are planning to have parent-kid games this Saturday morning.  We encourage *all* parents to suit up in gear and come out on the ice.  There's no better way to spend an early
Saturday morning than playing hockey with your kids.  At minimum, you'll need skates, helmet, and stick.  If anyone has extra gear, please bring it along for others to use.  We have *extremely limited* gear available
in the equipment room.  For you parents who aren't used to skating and are worried about looking foolish - don't be.  It's all in fun, and we're there to have a good time.  How many of your friends can say they
had the courage to get out and play ice hockey with their children? Whether you're an A league player, or a raw beginner who is wobbly on skates - come out and have fun.  Your kids will thank you for it!

*IF* we have enough parents show up to play, then we will have a parents vs. kids game.  If the ratio is too small, then we'll divide the kids and parents up on 2 teams, and play that way.  Either way, it will
be fun for everyone.

The end-of-season party will be from 4:30 to 7:30.  We will have both the ice and the turf field for the kids to play for a couple of hours. The coaches are working up some fun on-ice games to play, so bring your
skates and your helmets.  Other gear is optional, but no sticks. Parents are invited to come and skate as well. Around 6:30, we will eat, with food being provided by Texas Roadhouse, a Plex
sponsor.  After eating, we will hand out trophies and yearbooks, and officially close out the fall/winter session.

Just as a side note, the parent/kid games and the party are open to ALL House league players from the Fall and Winter sessions.  If you only played in the Fall, you are more than welcome to come out both Saturday
morning and for the party in the afternoon.

Thanks again for a great year of hockey.  I hope to see you out on the ice Saturday morning!

-Craig Dooley
IIHF Advisory Board President

A MESSAGE FROM IIHF PARENT ADVISORY BOARD PRESIDENT, CRAIG DOOLEY:

Dear Hockey players and parents,

As we move into the second half of the fall hockey season, I wanted to take a few moments and thank everyone for their participation in the IIHF Youth Hockey Program this year. I hope everyone is having fun, and that the program is performing up to everyone's expectations.  The season has gotten off to a little slower start than we had hoped, but everything seems to be coming together. I urge all of you to contact me
or any other of the board members with any complaints, concerns, suggestions, or praises. The sole purpose of the IIHF Youth Hockey Organization is to provide a good quality program where kids can come
together to learn and play hockey in a fun, safe, and educational environment.

To that end, I want to send out some information on current and future plans as well as address a few concerns regarding the program.

First of all, for those of you that aren't familiar with our IIHF Advisory Board, the members are as follows:

Vice President - Dr. Steve Kerner, who just became a part of the board
in November 2009
Secretary - Tim Wracker, pulling double duty as our equipment manager
Treasurer - Kim Potts
ACE Coordinator - Ryan Petz
At-Large - Bob Beesburg
At-Large - Vance Arndt
Plex Director of Hockey Operations - Brian Bauman
President - Craig Dooley

If you have any concerns, complaints, suggestions, or just need anything from the program, please don't hesitate to contact any of us and let us know.

Jerseys should all be in and distributed. If you have not received a jersey, please contact Kim and let her know ASAP. Socks were handed out on Tuesday. If you have not received your socks please ask Coach Brian Bauman, Tim Wracker, Kim Potts or myself know.

Please keep an eye on your mailbox as well as the IIHF Web site (
www.leaguelineup.com/IIHF) for current, up-to-date news on practices, games, and other issues. If there is anything you'd like to see posted on the Web site, please let us know.

You will shortly be receiving information on a fundraiser raffle that we will be holding starting in a few weeks.  I know everyone else has fundraisers around this time as well, but the IIHF relies on fundraisers and sponsorships to keep us going. The fee you pay each session to play goes to the Plex to cover ice time.  The IIHF doesn't get any of the money, so we have to have sponsors and fundraisers to cover expenses
such as jerseys, socks, trophies, end-of-year party, additional equipment, etc. The prizes for the raffle will be really good, especially in this economy and with the Christmas holidays rapidly approaching. There will also be some great incentives for the kids to sell. Not only will there be prizes for the top sellers, but everyone
who sells a certain amount will get special prizes. Please keep an eye out for that and do what you can to help.

If you own a business or work for a business that would be willing to help sponsor the youth hockey, please let us know. If you know of any businesses that would be interesting in sponsoring Youth Hockey, please
let us know!

Volunteers - we are always looking for volunteers to help us out. We will be going over the registration forms and contacting people that said they were willing to help out. If you didn't fill out one of those forms and are willing to devote some time and energy to helping the IIHF, please let us know. We can use people both on and off the ice!

Also, by request of the Plex, please make sure that your child changes in the locker rooms. That's what they are there for, and it not only helps keep the hockey funk away from the main lobby as much as possible,
it also helps keep the lobby cleaner and neater looking, and it's safer for your bags and gear. Check the board next to the concession stand as you come in to see which locker rooms your group will be using that day. Note that the Cyclones Locker room (4) is designated as the Women's locker room.  Also, please make sure to clean up any tape and trash after practices and games. Let's try to leave the locker rooms as clean
as we can.

That brings me to the unpleasant part of this message. Recently, there have been several cases of vandalism in the locker rooms at the Plex. The manager there has been nice enough to let us handle things internally, but we need to prevent any more incidents from happening. Please talk with your kids about this, and if you see any incidents happening, please put a stop to it.

From what I’ve been seeing, the kids all seem to be enjoying this hockey season. I’ve enjoyed watching them grow and improve as hockey players so far, and I’m always amazed at how quickly the newer kids pick up the skills and abilities.  If only it were that easy for me!

Thank you for letting us work with your kids, and a big thank you for the time and money that you as a parent put into helping promote hockey in Columbia.

Craig Dooley
President, IIHF Advisory Board

2009 - 2010 Fall Season
Hello Everyone,

With the Fall session approaching fast, I just wanted to thank everyone for signing up ON TIME and getting involved with hockey again this year.

Next week's practice schedule is posted on the Plex Web site.  We will be evaluating all the players on Monday.  You can follow the schedule online at www.plexindoorsports.com/irmoice click on schedules, then click on the date, click on the group.

Monday 9/28/09 ice times:

Birth Years 1999 and up - 6:30pm
Birth Years 1998 and down - 7:30pm

Please try to be at the rink at least 15-20 minutes early to get on the ice in time.  Every player will need their name plate on their helmet before they step on the ice.  IIHF will supply them.  We will be ordering jerseys as well, so look for a IIHF member to be checking with you on size.

This year, USA Hockey has a new module which the IIHF will follow.  We want to offer more ice time to our players (at no additional cost) and increase the skill development, while making sure each player has a great experience.  Our goal is to develop not just better hockey players, but to develop better athletes.

***Every player must be registered with USA Hockey.  Please sign up online at; http://www.usahockeyregistration.com/  and bring a copy of your registration to evaluation/practice or email it to IrmoIceHockey@aol.com
