Beacons Ship-wreck Saints 7-1, Linn goes down with the Ship

    7/30/2009

The Saints played like they were in a fog last night being run ashore by McKay righty Danny Gomez. Despite receiving 8 walks, the Saints could only muster 1 run. To make matters worse, the Saints committed 4 costly miscues. Although not his best performance, the defense didn't do much to help out righty Mark Nickerson who took the hill for South Boston. Nickerson himself bobbled a comebacker that lead to 2 unearned runs. Gomez, was effectively wild, keeping the Saints on their heels and striking out 10 but unleashed a pitch hitting Saints' catcher Robbie Linn that may have ramifications down the road. Linn took a pitch off the pinky of his catching hand that had the burly catcher writhing on the ground in pain. Linn took his base after a brief icing but had to remove himself from the game later when he realized he couldn't get his batting glove nor mitt back on his hand. He was scheduled for x-rays and the Saints hope their leading hitter will be ready for the play-offs. The Saints continue a grinding week with another away game tonight at Ronan Park against the Harbor Point Dodgers weather permitting.

    Saints Whitewash Black Sox, 3-0

    Or

    No "NO-NO TENET" for Tenney

It didn't seem that significant in the third inning when one of the Black Sox reached base on a bunt single but it ended up preventing Jon Tenney from reaching Yawkey League acclaim as one of the few pitchers to pitch a no-hitter. In workman-like fashion, Tenney missed the milestone by "that much"!

The game moved along at a deliberate pace as both pitchers work in a methodical fashion; however, the effectiveness of both hurlers counterbalanced the pace and before you knew it, the game was in the seventh inning. The night was picture perfect summer weather for baseball, almost Norman Rockwell-esque. Sitting back enjoying an ice cold lemonade would have topped off the evening.

Some notable moments were Greg Swhind’s catch of a sinking line drive, another RBI single by Andy Laroque (sporting a bandage on the gash he suffered the game before), a double by John Viola down the third base line and subsequent doubling off second base after a line drive out and of course the pitching by Tenney. The win moved the Saints 4 points ahead of Al Thomas in the battle for the Tarpey Division but the A’s have three games in hand. The Saints try to increase the lead with an away game at Ronan Park against the McKay Club at 7:30 PM weather permitting.

    Saints Leash Bulldogs

It's easy to see why the Malden Bulldogs have given up fewer runs than any other team in the league. These guys know how to throw the leather and their pitching isn't bad either. Things got off to a shaky start for the Saints as they were down 0-3 after one inning. It was pretty hot and humid out there today and it looked as though the bats were going to be even hotter as the Saints came back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Then a funny thing happened on the way to a score-a-thon, both teams settled down pitching-wise and defensively. Both teams played runless ball from the third through the seventh inning. Both teams had chances but key strikeouts and defensive gems kept the string of zeroes going into the bottom of the eighth. There, the Saints were able to get the lead off batter on and then runners on second and third with one out. The Bulldogs chose to intentionally walk DH Jon Tenney to face the Saints top hitter, Robbie Linn to set up a force all around and possible double play. Robbie has been scuffling a little lately but this time came through with a ball in the hole and into leftfield which the shortstop just couldn't get to and the Saints managed a second straight walk-off win. Special kudos to Tim Dacey who did a great job shutting down the Dogs offense for the last seven innings and some nice defense from Monte Marrocco playing shortstop. The Saints next face the second stingiest team, the West Roxbury Bluefish on Monday night.

A couple of humorous notes: On Linn's game winning single, the Bulldogs leftfielder made a strong throw to first base to attempt to steal some of Linn's thunder by trying to throw him out figuring Robbie was not running too hard down the line. And Robbie's own comment about the Malden coach asking who was up after Tenney and immediately deciding to walk him when he found out it was Linn on deck.)

    Grand Finale

The South Boston Saints have been struggling lately with inconsistent fielding (3 errors last night and at least two great plays) and the inability to get timely hits. It seemed as though that was a thing of the past last night when the team came up with 4 runs in the first inning after spotting the McKay Club a short-lived 2 run lead. However, Mike Barthel settled down and shut the door for the next five innings while his team battled back to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. (Jon Tenney while not displaying his best stuff, kept the team close enough.) With a couple of close calls, the Saints managed to load the bases but there were two outs. Barthel fell behind in the count 2-0 and was forced to throw a fastball over the heart of the plate to Kent Anderson. Given that Mike was probably getting a little tired and starting to display some wildness, the bet would have been that Anderson would have been taking a pitch. Kent saw it differently. He guessed Bartel would have to throw a fastball and he was right. Kent put a good swing on it and the ball majestically arced down the left field line. It was obvious it was fair but the question was, was it long enough? The left fielder, who earlier made a terrific over the head grab of a ball hit by Monte Marrocco, flew toward the left field line and appeared to have a bead on it; however, he ran out of room as the ball dropped over the left field fence for a two out, walk off grand slam. What looked like another painful loss, turned into a uplifting triumph that had the whole team running up to the plate to congratulate the conquering hero as Rob Stephenson carried him, albeit struggling, to the bench.

The South Boston Saints have started the 2009 season on a high note winning 4 out of their first 5 games including a 4-0 shutout of the Brighton Black Sox Saturday afternoon. Despite a good outing by the Sox pitching, the Saints were able to put together 4 runs while shutting down the Black Sox bats in a game that took only 95 minutes. Saints pitcher, Jim Farell had a fair outing himself in shutting out the Sox in his first Yawkey League appearance. Jim did a Dice-K imitation getting many 3-2 counts and allowing quite a few baserunners but always coming up with the big pitch to end any trouble that may have been brewing.

Robbie Linn who has been off to a torrid start, got on base 4 more times in the victory. In the only time he was put out, he knocked in a run with ground out.

The Saints go after their 5th win Tuesday night at 8 PM facing the South End Astros at Jim Rice Field.

Speaking of Jim Rice, congratulations to Jim for his selection into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The South Boston Saints wish to congratulate the new Yawkey League Champions, the East Boston Fish. Well done!

It's All Over! It's All Over!

Well, when Johnny Most yelled it on April 15, 1965 it had a much more positive feel to it. Unfortunately, for the Saints. The 2008 season is over much too soon. In a completion of a suspended game the Saints probably should have won, the Saints lost 14-12 to the Brighton Brewers who are headed to the Finals. This is a step back for the Saints who made it to the Finals last year but were quickly dispatched by the then champions, Somerville. It is now up to the Brighton Brewers and the East Boston Bluefish to fight for the crown relinquished by Alibrandi's.
May the best team win and congrats to Somerville for an awesome run!

    All For Nothing

The South Boston Saints and Brighton Brewers, like two heavy-weight boxers, banged, battled and brawled (figuratively) on the field for 8 innings to achieve a final outcome of nothing. The game was time suspended with the score tied 12-12 and the game will be resumed tonight at 7 PM. The Saints played poorly early (and late) giving away 5 runs in the top of the first to only come back and take an 11-7 lead. Unfortunately, the lead disintegrated and the Brewers went ahead 12-11. The Saints recovered enough to tie the score but despite loading the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th, they could not deliver the knock-out blow with the last two batters striking out. No names will be released of the let downs but there were a few names on the positive side where Rob Stephenson did a great job in relief as well as scoring the 12th run all the way from 1st on a double from standout back-up, back-up cather Tony Poulos. Tony will be leaving the team shortly to serve his country in the US COAST GUARD and will be missed. He's a good ball player and better human being. We wish him well. Being a back-up catcher, didn't get Tony the opportunity to shine but he made the most of his appearances this season batting .333 with an OBP of .429. And again he made his presence felt last night getting two hits and doing a fine job behind the plate. Other notables were Sean "NUKE" Benoit who hit a double with the bases loaded but unfortunately had to come out of the game with a pulled hamstring he suffered getting to first on the double. His status is doubtful for tonight's resumption. Andy "ROCK" Larocque played a solid game at third while getting on base three times.

One of the Saints' players called the game both mentally and physically exhausting but they are going to have to recover quickly if they are going to get back into the series. The Saints are trailing 0-2 in this round and cannot afford to falter or they will be watching the rest of the play-offs from the stands. A victory last night may have been just the momentum they needed to get back into this championship hunt as the Brewers took a lot of punches and seemed staggered but now they are well back in the driver's seat feeling they have taken the best the Saints can offer and they are still standing. We'll see how it plays out tonight at Ronan Park.

    ........................................................

    Saints on Brink of Elimination

The Saints are one loss away from being dumped for the play-offs after suffering a 2-0 loss to the Brighton Brewers. The Saints had an opportunity to get back in the game and the series when they got runners on first and third in the seventh inning and shortstop Sam Boone at the plate. Boonie lofted a high fly ball to the opposite field above the foul line that was out of the reach of the first and second basemen and right-fielder. It appeared that the Saints had finally broken through and scored and still two runners on. However, things did not work out that way. Since only two umpires were scheduled to do the semi-final round, the base umpire had positioned himself in the middle of the field leaving the foul/fair decisions to the home plate umpire. The home plate umpire was in a difficult position because he now had to call a ball that was landing more than 150 feet away all the while there was a catcher, batter, first baseman and first base coach all in a position to block his vantage point. So a ball that appeared to land on the foul line was ruled foul and the runners had to return back to first and third and Boone back to the plate. Boonie struck out and then second baseman Greg Harjula was called out on a close 6 to 3 play to end the game.

Tim Dacey pitched well in the loss holding the powerhouse Brewers to only 5 hits but they were able to parlay those 5 hits into 2 runs. The Saints try to stay in the series when the come home to Ronan Park for a 7:30 PM game Wednesday night 8/20/2008.

Update to Here We Groan Again
Well, it appears the Yawkey League has ruled against the Saints getting a suspended game against Somerville which they led 4-3 after 5 1/2 innings even though the Major League rule 4.12.A.5 states that a suspended game shall be called for the reason of:

"Weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead."

The Yawkey league however invoked it own rule 11.04 which states games will be declared official "that are stopped as a result of inclement weather or for a scheduled light shutdown will be considered official if the losing team has completed five turns (innings) at bat. {However, it seems that this rule never states that since the home and losing team didn't get a chance to bat in the bottom half of the inning, the score would revert back to the previous completed inning.} The Saints argued that the rule was not clear but to no avail. Evidently the umpire believed that the game would be allowed to continue as he had already told the Somerville team that he would allow the Saints to finish their at bat in the 6th and suspend the game if necessary. Had he interpreted the rule the way the League did, he would not have allowed the Saints to bat and ended it after 5 full innings. So instead of possibly finally beating the powerhouse Somerville team, the Saints were bureaucratically handed their 8 loss of the season.

For the record, this writer doesn't have a problem with the league ruling as it has a right to invoke it's own rule (although maybe it should be clarified). What was more disappointing was that the game was called before the 6th inning could be completed in its entirety. Granted it was raining but I am not sure that conditions warranted stopping the game but it was the umpire's right to do so.

    Here We Groan Again

In an entertaining game last night against the always formidable Somerville Alibrandi's the outcome was well, undecided! Somerville had just lost a chance to break the game open in the bottom of the 5th when Andy "The Rock" Laraocque made a great stab of a hot shot to third and turned it into a 5-4-3 doubleplay ending the rally. Then in the top of the 6th, SS Sam "Boom-Boom" Boone cracked his 2nd homer of the game, a majestic shot to left that appeared to hit of the top row of lights of the left field light tower. During this action the rain had begun to fall. The Saints then put together two more runs to take a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. As they took their defensive positions the home plate umpire began a conversation with both managers and informed the teams that the game was being suspended and would be picked up at the point they called it, the bottom half of the 6th. The game will be completed before the next game the two teams are scheduled to play which would be July 30 @ 7:30 PM at Ronan Park.

In contrast to the opening day, game 2 was a tightly played affair that ended with South Boston picking up their first win.

After a scoreless opening frame by both sides, the Saints got all the runs they needed in the second inning when Sam Boone drove a long 3 run homer to left, scoring pitcher Jon Tenney and Greg Harjula. After that it was all Jon Tenney as the veteran pitcher and manager of the Saints carried a perfect game into the fifth inning. A one out single by Andy Kurzon ended everyone’s hopes that history would be made, but Tenney quickly got the next two outs to stay out of any trouble. With a five run lead Tim Dacey came in to relieve and threw 2 scoreless frames to finish up the game.

In the end the Saints pounded out 12 hits and made no errors in wrapping up a 5-0 victory that took less than 90 minutes to play.

    GAME 1

    Summary | Box Score
    Final....................1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
    Brookline Dodgers 0 0 2 4 3 3 0 12 10 4
    South Boston Saints 1 0 2 0 2 0 4 9 6 7

The South Boston Saints opened up the 2008 season with a Mother’s Day matinee at Ronan Park in Dorchester against the Brookline Dodgers. On the hill for the Saints was Max Warren, who was making his Yawkey League pitching debut. Opposing him was the Dodgers Shuan Farrar, a nine year YBL veteran. In the end however, it would be the team’s defense, and not the pitching, that would decide the game.

The Saints got the scoring started when pitcher Max Warren led off the first by reaching on an error by the Brookline 2b. After a stolen base by Warren, Rob Linn hit a run scoring single to the right side to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Brookline would come back to take the lead with 2 runs in the third inning, helped immensely by 2 errors by the Saints defense. However, in the bottom of the inning South Boston answered with 2 runs of their own, and re-took the lead.

Things would unravel in the top of the fourth as Warren experienced some control problems, and the Saints defense did nothing to help get their pitcher of the mound. 3 walks, 3 hits and 3 errors later, and Brookline had a 6-3 lead.

In the fifth inning Tim Dacey had taken over pitching duties, but once again South Boston’s defense failed to help out their pitcher, as Brookline scored 3 more unearned runs to break open the game.

The Saints made late noise with 4 runs in the 7th, but Dodger RP Marc Skipper (S, 1) recorded his first regular season YBL save in 9 years after retiring the final two batters of the game.

In earning the win, Shaun Farrar (1-0) went 6 innings of 4 hit, 6 K ball.. Farrar allowed 2 earned runs while walking 3 Saints batters.

Brookline's offense was led by LF Marty Whitmore (2-3, triple, BB, 5 RBI), 2B Andy Zides (2-4, double, 2 R, 1 RBI) and DH Joe Patrolia (2-4, 1 R). The Dodgers 1 and 2 hitters, CF Jay Shatto and SS Jerrad Ryan, both scored twice and had an SB. C Bryan Duffy went 1-4 with a R and an RBI, and 3B Gregg Smith (1-3, R) sparkled defensively.

Saints 2B Greg Harjula (1-2, 2 BB, 2 R, 2RBI) led the Southie offense, and made a nice catch on a liner over his head. SP Max Warren (0-1) took the loss in 4 innings of work, while offensively, he scored a R, had a SB and a Sac Fly RBI.
