CJHL Makes The Jump To Tier II
February 9, 2011 — - The Continental Junior Hockey League would like to announce that the league will become a Tier II Jr. ‘A’ hockey league for the upcoming 2011-12 season. The CJHL is the first junior league to play under the sanctioning of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and will be the first Tier II league to be sanctioned by the AAU.

"We are very excited about going Tier II for the upcoming 2011-12 season,” stated League President Jim Cashman. “This is an important step for the league to be able to put the very best product on the ice. This will allow the league to grow to new levels and continue to give young hockey players an opportunity to advance their careers. We feel that we have great markets for the CJHL to be successful and anticipate great support.”

The CJHL had two running models with the Niagara Fury playing out of Niagara Falls, ON, Erie, PA and the Alpena Thunder playing out of Alpena, MI for 2010-11. It was a great success and helped to bring in other ownership groups to the CJHL. Five teams are already set to play for the 2011-12 season, Niagara Fury (Niagara Falls, ON), Erie Blizzard (Erie, PA), Indiana Drillers (Indiana, PA), Johnstown Wings (Ebensburg, PA) and Alpena Thunder (Alpena, MI). The CJHL will be announcing three other franchises within the next few weeks.

“This is a great step for the CJHL,” says Indiana Drillers GM Bob Yusko. “I know that we can definitely make it successful in Indiana.”

Alpena Michigan is no stranger to the Tier II level. Alpena had the IceDiggers of the North American Hockey League from 2005-2010 before they moved to Corpus Christi, TX.

“This is a great day for the league as well as the Thunder in Alpena,” states Thunder Owner Joe Kolodziej. “This will bring the best players in the area back to Alpena to play and give them a better opportunity to advance to the college level of hockey.”

The CJHL members unanimously decided this was the right direction for the league. It will give the league national exposure and is an important step in development. Each team will play a 40 game schedule starting in September. Games will be played on Friday and Saturday nights as well as Sunday afternoon. The CJHL will announce the new teams once they are announced in their respective cities.
