Archeologists Unearth Evidence of Ancient Lacrosse Team
October 26, 2009
Miami, FL. Archeologists announced today that research being performed in and around Miami, FL revealed conclusively that the ancient American Indian game of Lacrosse has been played in the area for centuries, if not decades. In fact, unbelievable as it may seem in all respects, several members of one of these recently discovered prehistoric teams have been found surviving in small enclaves throughout modern Miami-Dade County.
Interviewed by reporters one elderly gentleman, a Mr. H. Block, amazingly still active as a coach for Killian High School's Girls team, commented on a recently discovered team photo slab. He croaked: "That's me, number 23 in the front row, back in '83" and then took a nap.
When he awoke a short time later, he added: "For those of you that might know him, that's my old teammate Mark Paretz with that silly #0 on his chest" and then he waddled off.
Scientists are still awaiting independent confirmation of this historic discovery of the team contemporary documents identify as the cleverly named "Miami Lacrosse Club".

October 4, 2009
As a result of the League scheduling meeting on Saturday, Killian's preliminary 2010 schedule is now available on this website (Click on "Schedule").
The schedule shows 7 away games and currently only 4 home games. However, We have reserved Saturday, March 6, to invite selected teams from the West Coast divisions to come to Miami so we would expect to pick up one or two home games on that day.
There were a couple of teams absent from the scheduling meeting who may wind up on our schedule, also.
Depending on the field conditions our home game against Palmetto may be moved to either Ron Ehmann Park or the Football field.
PRE-SEASON CLASSIC IN MIAMI!
October 4, 2009
For the first time, the Southeast Florida IA League has elected to hold its Pre-Season Classic in Miami. Hosted by Miami-Killian with help from Miami-Palmetto and Coral Shores teams, this popular event will be held at Kendall Soccer Park on Saturday, February 6, 2 days before competitive games begin.
The format will be similar to previous years in which each participating team will play three 25 minute "scrimmage" games which do not count for the season standings but give all teams the opportunity to give their new players a chance for some pre-season competition.
By moving the Classic to Miami, the League is helping to promote Girls Lacrosse in Miami-Dade County. We would like anyone who can help with publicity call Coach Henry or Coach Tony. We will also need a few volunteers to help set up fields the day before, and help clean up afterward. The League will pay all expenses and provide day-of-game volunteers and logistics.

We will talk about pre-season conditioning, Fall Ball, and answer questions about how the Team will work this year.
Cougars Ousted from Playoffs by Palmer-Trinity
April 2, 2009
Killian's "breakthrough" season came to an end last night when the Cougars were eliminated from the playoffs in a first-round loss to Palmer-Trinity. The Falcons brought a wealth of talent to the game and was able to score repeatedly despite outstanding goalkeeping from Senior G'Zelle Campos who faced at least 30 shots.
Killian received goals from it's most dependable scorers with some success from set plays on attack. Sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno set a new standard for the Cougars by scoring her 60th goal, totalling four for the game. This year's surprise offensive star, Junior attacker Jackie LaPointe had 3 (36).
The Cougars finish the season with a 7-10 won/lost record and clearly moved to the "main stream" of compretitive squads in the 23 team Southeast Florida Club league. Having won 1 game in the first year and 2 in the second, this year's team gained new level of respect and with only 4 seniors leaving has a chance for another outstanding season next Spring.

Cougars Drop Two in East-West Tournament
March 29, 2009
Killian's bid for a winning season this year took a severe blow this weekend after sufferring twin losses in close games in Naples. Both games were marred by inconsistent officiating and testy player encounters but after all was said and done the Cougar's wound up on the losing side of both games.
Naples HS 8, Killian 5
The two teams played even in the first half with Killian successfully running several set plays, but Naples came out more aggressively with their zone defense and shut out the Cougars in the second half while scoring three times themselves.
Killian had 3 goals from leading scorer, sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno (51) and high-scoring junior Jackie Lapointe (31) and an unusual goal from junior attacker Garcynth Green (3) in a set play variation designed just for her but never practiced prior to the game. Also unusual was that every goal scored by the Cougars in the game was assisted.
Senior goalie G'zelle Campos had 8 saves or blocks in this closely contested game in which the lead changed several times and every shot seemed to be critical.
Gulf Coast HS 12, Killian 9
The Cougars fought hard to stay within striking range throughout this very competitive game but in the end a young and tired defense could not stop Gulf Coast's top scorer for the game (5 goals) who managed to score that team's last 4 goals, their only goals of the second half, and maintain the lead, while the rest of the Gulf Coast squad played a very effective isolation slowdown to keep the ball away from Killian.
In this last regular contest of the regular season Killian received goals from the most consistent scorers. Sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno had five(56), junior Jackie Lapointe two(33), sophomore Hilary Tobolowsky (11) and senior Mia Andrillon(13) had one each. Sophomore Martika Morgan had an assist.
Killian faces Palmer-Trinity in the opening District 4 playoff game Wednesday afternoon.
Douglas & Lackluster Play Ruin Cougars' Senior Day
March 26, 2009
Facing a skilled and confident Douglas squad, the Cougars gave an uninspired effort and paid the price. The last home game of the season went easily to the Eagles 17-3.
Douglas was first to almost every draw and loose ball and showed that they knew what to do with it when they got there. The traditionally skilled group scooped ground balls, made crisp passes and played a stifling defense and generally dominated all aspects of the game. Nine different players scored for the Eagles.
Killian goals scored by Senior captain Mia Andrillon(12), Junior Jackie Lapointe(30) and scoring leader, Sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno(48). Andrillon spent the second half revisiting her goalkeeping skills in her first appearance in goal this season.
Killian (7-7) heads for the East-West Tournament on Saturday in the regular season finale with a chance to secure a winning season by defeating Naples and Gulf Coast.
Palmer-Trinity First Playoff Oponent
March 23, 2009
With all District games having been played, Killian wound up in sole possession of 3rd place with a 2-4 in-District Record. A League tie-breaker determined the top seed (Coral Shores) and second seed (Palmer-Trinity) who finished with identical 5-1 in-District records and each having beat the other for their one loss. As a result, according to the #1 v #4, #2 v #3 playoff format, Killian will play Palmer in the semi-final Wednesday, April 1 at 5:30 PM at host Coral Shores HS.
Cougars End Chaminade Season With Another Loss
March 19, 2009
Killian placed bookends around Chaminade's inaugural season with a 17-3 victory in the Lion's last scheduled game of the season. The Cougars also won the first game the two teams played, Chaminade's first.
Even a juggled Killian lineup was able to control the pace of the game and maintained a huge territorial and scoring advantage. Ten different scorers tallied for the Cats lead by Senior Captain Mia Andrillon with 5 goals (11). But the scorers included two first-timers, Senior G'Zelle Campos, the regular starting goalie playing D-wing in this game, and Sophomore Tess Moreno. Other scorers included Sophomore Captain Lauren Cedeno(47) with 3, Sophomore Stephanie Salgado (4) with 2, Sophomores Lauren Silver (3), Martika Morgan (2), Juniors Jackie Lapointe (29) and Michelle Bandklayder (2) and Senior Brittney Hernandez (13).
Freshman Goalie Brianna Benezra played solidly in goal and turned aside at least two unexpected difficult shots.
Killian is 7-6, Chaminade-Madonna 0-5.
Comeback Slips Away
March 17, 2009
Although playing this crucial game against District leading Coral Shores without 2 starters, Killian over came a horribly slow start to challenge the Lady Hurricanes in the best performance ever against a team which has historically dominated the Cougars. Killian fell behind early with very sluggish transition defense and found itself behind 5-0 after only 5 minutes of play. But the Cougars regrouped and nibbled away at the deficit throught the rest of the first half and into the second, tying the game with 16 minutes left and again with 14:45 to go. But Coral Shores did not give up and re-established a lead a minute later, which they never relinquished.
Junior Attacker Jackie LaPointe had 3 goals in the comeback and Sophomore Captain Lauren Cedeno had 3 as well before having to leave the game with a little over 6 minutes to play because of foul difficulty. Sophomore Attacker Hilary Tobolowsky had 2 goals and Senior Captain Mia Andrillon had 1.
After the first 5 minutes of the game Killian's young defense settled down and the Cougars actually outscored Coral Shores from that point on. Senior Goalkeeper G'Zelle Campos had another quality game turning away at least 14 Hurricane scoring attempts.
Killian is now 6-6 (2-4 in District 4), Coral Shores is 8-2 (5-0 in District 4). Killian plays Chaminade-Madonna on the road Thursday afternoon.
Cougars Stingy Defense Keeps Panthers at Bay
March 13, 2009
The second cat fight of the season went to Killian as the Cougars' defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard while the offense methodically Put balls in the net. Killian utilized a controlled offense with several effective set plays to wear down and confuse the Palmetto defense. Five different players scored for Killian. Junior attacker Jackie LaPointe led the scorers with 4 goals. Sophomore scoring leader and Team Captain Lauren Cedeno had two goals and an assist while Senior D-wing Brittney Hernandez also had two goals. Sophomore Hilary Tobolowsky and Senior Captain Leah Volpe each had a goal and an assist. Senior Captain Mia Andrillon was strong on face offs and contributed an assist. Sophomore Martika Morgan played a strong second half and competently filled in for starting center Cedeno who had to leave the game after receiving her second yellow card part way into the second half.
But the big story was that the Killian defense blanked the Panthers for 28 minutes from the end of the first half to the end of the game, led by Senior Goalkeeper G'Zelle Campos. Campos made at least 10 saves, several at point blank range and made several successful clears to start the offense on its way. Her strong second half play in the first match up of these two teams allowed Killian to come from behind for a victory earlier this season.
Killian's 10-4 victory improves it's season record to 6-5 (District 2-3).
Cougars Fall to Palmer-Trinity's Strong Second Half
March 10, 2009
Killain brought a strong game plan into this District 4 rematch with Palmer-Trinity. But after almost perfect execution in the first half, which found the Cougars down only 4-6, Palmer-Trinity's superior numbers and skills took over and they walked off to an impressive 16-5 victory.
Scoring leader Sophomore Captain Lauren Cedeno lead the Cougars with 4 goals (39) and Junior Jackie LaPointe scored her 21st, but all except one were scored in the 1st half before the Falcons' swarming defense shut down the Cougars' offense.
Junior Michelle Bandklayder kept Palmer's top scorer under control throughout the game with tough "shadow defense", and Senior Goalkeeper G'Zelle Campos made several spectacular saves throughout the game but Palmer's relentless attack in the second half eventually overcame these successes.
Killian drops to 5-5 (District 1-3). Palmer-Trinity improves to 4-4 (District 3-1). The Cougars play District 4 rival Miami-Palmetto away Friday afternoon.
Cougars Punish Paladins
March 5, 2009
Killian used experience and superior skills to trounce South Plantation in a game originally scheduled in Broward but moved to Kendall Soccer Park earlier this week. Eight different Cougars tallied to bring the final score to 15-1 and for the first time this season Killian logged an impressive 8 assists on the way to a second successive lopsided win. Sophomore Ashley Feller scored her first goal as a Cougar and Junior Captain Alexandra Beesting scored her first of the season. Senior Captain Leah Volpe had four assists and a goal (7), Junior Jackie LaPointe had four goals (20) and 2 assists. Other scorers included Junior Garcynth Green (2), Sophomore Hilary Tobolowsky (7), Senior Brittney Hernandez (10), Sophomore Lauren Cedeno (35).
The few South Plantation (0-3) threats that developed were turned aside by Killian's defense which reversed the play upfield with long, crisp passes, while Freshmen Goalie Brianna Benezra turned away all shots until late in the second half.
Competition toughens next week as Killian (5-4, 1-2)faces District rivals Palmer-Trinity (3-3, 2-1) and Miami-Palmetto (2-4, 0-3).
Cougars Spoil Chaminade-Madonna's Debut
March 2, 2009
Killian found itself in the relatively new position of being completely dominating as they quickly overwhelmed an enthusiastic but outclassed new Chaminade team. Chaminade's opening game of their brief inaugural season exposed weaknesses in all aspects of the game and Killian quickly pulled away to an 18-0 lead at halftime. After a lot of position shifting and the addition of playmaking rules and use of the entire roster, the scoring pace slowed somewhat. Nevertheless 12 different Cougar players tallied, lead by Sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno with 7. Sophomore Lauren Silver scored her first two goals of her career and first goals were also scored by newcomers GG Green, Martika Morgan, "Mango" Bandklayder, Sam Noble, and Abby Castro
Freshman Goalie Brianna Benezra started her first game and held a shutout well into the second half.
Palmer-Trinity Talent & Skills Bury Cougars Early
February 26, 2009
Killian's lack of intensity and poor ground game allowed a talented Palmer-Trinity team to pull away in the first half and although Killian did a better job in the second half, the game was never close. P-T's 16-8 victory dropped the Cougars to below .500 for the first time this season. Killian's defensive miscues in the first half and the inability to compete on ground balls spotted Palmer a 10-3 first half lead. Killian played better in the second half but could not close the gap.
Sophomore Lauren Cedeno returned to the lineup after having missed almost three games and lead the offense with 5 goals, breaking Killian's season goal scoring record after only 7 games. Junior Jackie LaPointe scored her 13th goal of the season and was joined in the scoring tally by Seniors Leah Volpe and Brittney Hernandez.
Senior Goalkeeper G'Zelle Campos had a remarkable game before being relieved with about 14 minutes left in the game. Despite the lopsided score she tallied at least 13 stops including several point-blank situations when the defense broke down. Freshman goalkeeper Briana Benezra finished the game and demonstrated some real proficiency with several difficult saves of her own.
Killian plays start-up Chaminade-Madonna of Hollywood Monday afternoon at Kendall Soccer Park.
Western Debut Surprises Cougars
February 23, 2009
The new Western HS team showed good preparation and lead by by a 9 goal performance by transfer Thais Toledo, held off Killian's late counter-attack to snatch their first victory in their first game by a score of 12-9.
Playing without leading scorer Lauren Cedeno (knee injury) Killian stayed close enough to threaten throughout the game but could not stop Western's talented scorer until the second half and was repeatedly turned away by Western's surprising defense. Killian recovered somewhat and proved they can put goals on the board as four different players tallyed, Three goals by Seniors Brittney Hernandez and Mia Andrillon, 2 by Junior Jackie Lapointe and one by Sophomore Hilary Tobolowski kept the Coagars alive. But it was not enough.
Killian faces division rival Palmer-Trinity on the road Thursday.
Cougars Take Care of Business, Then Get a Lesson
February 22, 2009
Saturday's Cypress Bay Tournament brought smiles and frowns to Killian's improving Girls' Lacrosse Team.
Killian 13, Taravella 3:
In a game against Taravella previously scheduled for that day, but moved to the neutral tournament site, the Cougars took early control and steadily built a lead throughout the contest. The attack broadened with 6 different scorers tallying. Junior attacker Jackie LaPointe lead the way with 5 goals including the first goal and the winner. Top scorer Sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno scored early but had to leave the game because of a reocurring knee injury. Other goal scorers included Sophomore attacker Hilary Tobolowsky, Senior Brittney Hernandez (2), and Senior captain Leah Volpe. Senior captain Mia Andrillon, in her first game back from ankle injury scored twice and Sophomore Stephanie Salgado closed out the scoring with her first of the season.
At the other end of the field, Killian's defense was solid throughout and Senior Goalie G'Zelle Campos extended her consecutive shutout minute steak allive by not allowing a goal until under 4 minutes to go in the first half, a perid of more than 45 game minutes starting in the second half of Tuesday's come-from-behind victory!
Barron-Collier 17, Killian 0:
The second game of the day gave the young Cougar team a chance to play against the League's best. This juggernaut team was the bi-coast League champion last year and show all signs of repeating. Against precision passing, catching, and speed to waste, Killian had a difficult time adjusting to the pace. By the time any adjustments could be effective, they were too little, too late. With the leading scorer injured on the sidelines, there was little Killian could do but limit the damage and learn what it takes to be much better.
Cougars Come From Behind to Beat Rival Palmetto
February 17, 2009
Overcoming a horribly slow start and frustrated by Palmetto's starting goalkeeper, Killian re-grouped and stormed from behind to come away with an unlikely 11-9 victory.
Down 7-2 at the half and being outplayed in almost every facet of the game, Killian stepped on the field for the halftime draw and quickly surrendered 2 additional goals. But after an early time-out to settle everyone down, sophomore Lauren Cedeno took control of the game. Dominating draws and relentlessly attacking the Palmetto goal Cedeno scored 7 second half goals while newcomer Jackie LaPointe continued to show her developing skills with 2 goals, including an all-important insurance goal with about 6 minutes left. Senior Brittany Hernandez gave the team a boost by scoring late in the first half after sprinting the field and finishing off the run with a pretty goal. Cedeno also scored in the first half.
Remarkably, Senior Goalie G'Zelle Campos and the young Killian defense, came together to shut out Palmetto for the final 24 minutes of the game! This incredible defensive turn-around helped support the offense and Killian earned it's first District 4 win of the season.
Second Game Added Saturday
February 15, 2009
We have been requested to play a second game on Saturday as part of the Cypress Bay Invitational. Our regular season game against Taravella had already been moved into the 9:00 Tournament time slot and now a second game vs Barron-Collier has been added at 12:00 noon. So we will have a busy day.
'Cane Surge Drowns Cougars
February 14, 2009
An outnumbered Killian team succombed early and often to relentless pressure from the Coral Shores Lady 'Canes. Returning to a tactic that has always been succesful for them in the past, the host team rotated fresh legs continuously from their 30+ roster, quickly overwhelming Killian's smaller squad, additionally diminished by 2 late scratches and a preseason injury to senior captain Mia Andrillon.
With 4 goals from sophomore Lauren Cedeno and one by promising newcomer, junior Jackie LaPointe, the Cougars made the first half respectable. But with Cedeno out of the game throughout the second half with a knee bruise, the offense completely stalled while Coral Shores went on to score 6 unanswered goals for the 16-5 victory.
Killian will re-group for Tuesday evening's home opener with Palmetto at Kendall Soccer Park.
Killian Wins Opener in Overtime Thriller
February 10, 2009
In what was clearly the most exciting game in Killian's Girls' Lacrosse history the Cougars outlasted Broward Cypress Bay, winning 11-9 in overtime at Weston's Tequesta Trace Park. Killian was only behind once early in the first half but could never open more than a one goal lead while dominating time of possession, shots and field position. Killian's on the field discipline avoided the many penalties which severely hampered Cypress Bay.
Cypress Bay tied the game for the final time with less than 20 seconds left in regulation time but were outscored 2-0 in the 6 minute deciding overtime with Sophomore attacker Hilary Tobolowsky scoring the winning goal.
Sophomore captain Lauren Cedeno led the team with an amazing 7 goal performance! Junior attacker Jackie LaPointe celebrated her lacrosse debut with 2 goals and an assist. Senior midfielder and team captain Leah Volpe controlled the ground game at almost every restart draw and scored a goal of her own.
A defense hampered by last year's graduation and the illness this week hung together and was able to survive a 6 goal onslaught by Cypress Bay star Sydney Vellegas. Senior Goalie G'Zelle Campos was solid at critical points of the game.
Killian won it's opening game for the first time and now goes on to play District 4 rival Coral Shores HS in Tavernier on Friday evening.
Veterans & Rookies Combine for Impressive Jamboree Debut
February 7, 2009
Killian's returning lettermen anchored a solid midfield and led a rebuilt attack and defense to an impressive 2-1-1 '09 Preseason Classic result at St Andrews School in Boca Raton on Saturday.
This event, a series of four 20 minute scrimmages, is the only opportunity coaches have to put their players on the field against other IA League teams before the regular season starts next week. New players get the first real taste of lacrosse competion and all players get moved around and substituted often, but everyone is ready to get started!
Sophomore Lauren Cedeno led the offense with a goal in each of the three games she started, the victories over Taravela and Naples and the tie with Fort Myers. Sophomore attacker Hilary Tobolowsky started the scoring with a backhanded goal after curling the crease on her weak side. Other goals were scored by senior Brittney Hernandez, junior rookie Jaclyn Lapointe and returning junior Alexandra Beesting.
But the big surprise came from the rebuilt defense who played well with leadership from returning junior Sandy Burr. She and rookie defenders Sam Noble, Abby Castro and Tess Moreno worked hard in front of senior goalie G'Zelle Campos and freshman Briana Benezra, both of whom made some very timely stops.
Killian plays it's first regular season game Tuesday afternoon on the road in Weston (5:00 PM) against Broward-Cypress Bay, which was the team that inflicted the only loss of the day.

1st Alumni Game Goes to College Kids (plus one)
December 28, 2008
The first ever Killian Girls' Lacrosse Alumni game went to the understaffed, but experienced graduates, assisted by current team protege' Katherine Yeager and volunteer goalkeeper Greg Yeager. Outscored 19-10 in two 15 minute halves, the spirited 6 v 6 game on a short field was a great introduction for Killians' newest players and a chance to shake off the rust for the returnees. For most of the Alumni it was clearly the first workout since last spring...but who noticed?
Alumni goals were scored by Amanda Schram, Sonja Dyrdal, Landis Block, Erica Sokol and talented 7th-grader Katherine Yeager. Cami Urquijo played stunning defense except during the 47 times she fell down. Greg Yeager took a few for the team in goal.
Killian's goals came from returnees, Lauren Cedeno(6), Alexandra Ortega(3) and Brittney Hernandez(1). The inexperience of the team's defense, which was decimated by graduation, was obvious and will be the focus of preparation when practice starts in January. We may have seen the future of our goalkeeping with Freshman Brianna Benezra's first stand in goal. She made some great stops & saves!
Beautiful weather and a nice spectator crowd helped make the game a success.
Many thanks to veteran unmpire Bill Franklin who volunteered his time to officiate the game and to Mr and Mrs Lindsay for hosting the after-game pizza party and slide show. Thanks to the musicians as well.
Photos to be posted in a new album.

END OF SEASON BBQ
June 15, 2008
Our End-Of-Season Barbeque at The Crossings was a huge success. Almost every player and at least part of their family enjoyed a beautiful afternoon beside the pool. April 29, 2008
Congratulations to Seniors Amanda Schram and Landis Block who were selected by the other coaches for the All-League Second Team. Coaches picked 12 for First team, 12 for Second and ther were 11 Honorable Mentions. This is the best kind of recognition for these girls (I was not allowed to vote for them) because it reflects the other coaches recognition of their quality of play. It also acknowledges our program's place as a equal contributer in the league. CONGRATULATIONS LADIES!

Palmer-Trinity Falls in League Final
April 29, 2008
Palmer-Trinity took their end of season strong play all the way to the league final Saturday evening but eventually succumbed to undefeated Barron-Collier 13-8.
P-T first defeated Palmetto 16-6 in the District 4 Semi-Final, then surprised Coral Shores 14-7 in the District Final 2 days later. In the Regional Final P-T continued ther late-season surge by defeating Douglas 13-7 in a hard fought game, but could not get it going in time to fend off Barron-Collier the next night.
Palmer Trinity finished the season 9-8 but won 5 of their last 6 games before losing to B-C. Barron-Collier finished an incredible 18-0!
Congratulations to our District-mates Palmer-Trinity!
Cougars Competitive Season Ends With Style
April 16, 2008
Killian's 2nd season ended Tuesday evening with a 12-6 playoff loss to Coral Shores HS in Tavernier. The Cougars fought back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game twice at 5-5 and 6-6 but allowed a CS score with 34 seconds left to go to halftime down 7-6. The first half was among the most entertaining and well-played of the season.
The second half started in promising fashion with Killian having several good scoring opportunities, despite intense pressure all over the field from the Host Lady Hurricanes. But a few successes by CS on their shots and misses by Killian on their chances slowly allowed the home team to edge away, with Coral Shores ultimately scoring 5 unanswered goals in the second half.
Senior Sonja Dyrdal lead Killian's excellant first half with 3 goals. Senior Amanda Schram, Junior Mia Andrillon and Freshman Lauren Cedeno also scored. Junior G'Zelle Campos making several point-blank saves and Senior Landis Block with some key defensive stops helped keep the game in reach.
After the game Coral Shores coaches were quick to compliment the Killian effort noting that "you really took it to us this time". Coral Shores will play Palmer-Trinity for the District 4 final Thursday evening. Palmer-Trinity easily defeated Palmetto 16-5 in the earlier semi-final game.
We now wind down the season with several off-the-field activities: a team meeting (and uniform return) Monday after school, a middle school clinic on a date to be determined, the Miami Corporate Run water stop fundraiser on May 1 and our end-of-season awards party on May 18.
Killian Girls' LAX to Help @ Corporate Run
April 12, 2008
Team members, siblings, other families can help a worthy cause, raise some always-needed funds for the team and maybe earn some service hours by working a water stop at the Miami Corporate Run on May 1. Although some team members will not be able to participate because of a conflict with Killian's Awards Night, everyone else, plus anyone they can bring along should do this. For every participant we bring the team gets $20!!! Please let Leah know and get details from her: leahgator@aol.com
CONGRATS TO GIRLS' SOCCER TEAM
April 12, 2008
Congratulaions are in order for Killian's Girls' Soccer Team for achieving 4th place STATEWIDE in Division 6A Academic ranking. This is an extraordinary achievement and we should all be very proud. There are 6 players on our team who played on the smarties' soccer team. Nice work ladies!
Cougars Representatives to All-District Teams Chosen
March 29, 2008
Cougar Coaches have designated Seniors Amanda Schram and Landis Block on the All-District First Team and Juniors Leah Volpe and Mia Andrillon on the Second Team. Because of Killian's 3rd place finish, only 2 positions were available for each team. Palmetto also received 2 for each while the first two teams received 4 for each team. This is recognition only, there is no actual all-district game.
Congratulations ladies...this was very difficult this year.
Cougars Let High Flying Douglas Eagles Escape
March 24, 2008
Killian threw a scare at highly ranked Douglas but could not find the way to pull off the Senior Day upset. Surprisingly down only 3-4 at the half, The Cougars worked their way into a 5-5 tie with about 17 minutes left. But Douglas scored to go ahead by a goal. The teams traded goals in the next two minutes and it remained a one goal game until Killian's attempts to wrestle ball control from Douglas resulted in 2 late Eagle goals.
Killian's defense and goalkeeping made the 11-2 Eagles work hard for every score. Meanwhile the Cougars' dominated draws and the offense was very patient, making the most of several set play opportunities. Team scoring leader Senior Sonja Dyrdal had a goal and an assist, Junior Captain Mia Andrillon had 2 goals in only a half game as a field player. Freshman Lauren Cedeno had the other goal for the Cougars and Senior Shira Notrika had an assist on a beautiful feed from behind the net.
With 3 strong efforts against the leagues top teams, the Cougars take a break until the April 15 playoff game against Coral Shores.
Solid Cougar Effort Falls Short to Taravella
March 22, 2008
Killian stayed close but could not catch Taravella in the teams' second meeting of the season. Killian's offense was patient and set up several good scoring opportunities in the first half but Taravella's starting goalkeeper rejected several point-blank Cougar shots. The teams played even in the second half but that was not good enough for Killian.
Senior Shira Notrika had a stong game and controlled the offensive pace while the defense managed a respectable job against the Trojan's difficult pick & cut offense.
Underclassmen Clinic Wednesday, March 26
March 18, 2008
The Team will host an introductory skills clinic for Freshmen and Sophomore athletes interested in learning more about girls' lacrosse.

We will have a cooler with Gatoraide and some water on the field.
WE NEED ADULT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH SIGN-UP LISTS, SET-UP, WATER ETC. PLEASE LET COACH OR JERI VOLPE KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP THAT AFTERNOON.
2nd Try Fails v Cypress Bay
March 19, 2008
Cypress Bay out-dueled the Cougars for loose balls throughout the game and converted many opportunities to come away with an 11-4 victory. A constantly moving offense with good execution of passes, catches and ground balls left Killian's defense confused and often out of position.
Junior captain Leah Volpe had two goals and Senior Sonja Dyrdal also had two for Killian. Goaltending for both teams was outstanding.
Palm-Tri Ends Cougars Short Win Streak
March 13, 2008
Having played 5 games in 8 days a tired Killian squad saw their 2 game win streak come to an end in the last Distict game of the season. With 3 players slowed with flu symptoms and nagging injuries effecting 2 other starters the Cougars' second half game-tying rally could not hold up. The Falcons turned up the heat and walked off with a 8-3 victory.
Junior Goalie G'Zelle Campos had another outstanding afternoon in goal, turning away 15 shots and starting the offense with some very effective clears. Seniors Sonja Dyrdal, Amanda Schram and ailing Senior Captain Landis Block scored for Killian.
The Cougars have a few days off before facing Cypress Bay at home on Wednesday.
Cougars Hold Off Panther's Comeback for 1st Ever District Win
March 11, 2008
After taking and maintaining an early lead Killian survived a Palmetto comeback which tied the score with about 10 minutes remaining in the second half. But Killian settled down and scored three unanswered goals to seal the victory and take home the first District win in team history. Killian also has back to back wins for the first time.
Throughout the game Killian's defense smothered Palmetto scoring attempts. Senior Cami Urquijo had an outstanding defensive effort and Junior Goalie G'Zelle Campos made numerous point blank saves including several from free position shots.
Senior Amanda Schram returned to lead the offense with 3 goals while Freshman Lauren Cedeno and Junior captain Mia Andrillon each had 2 goals.
Seniors Amanda Merker and Sonja Dyrdal had goals and Dyrdal added two assists as well.
West Coast Trip Brings Frowns & Smiles
March 9, 2008
Killian's annual excursion to play west coast teams produced a two-game split, but like last year, it was also a great bonding event for players and families.
After piling on the bus at 6:30 AM the team headed off to Fort Myers munching bagels and cream cheese sponsored by Joanna's Market. A few winks and a movie later the bus pulled up at the Canterbury School, hosts for the day and opponents for the second game.
In the first game versus Bishop Verot the Cougars started slowly and fell behind quickly. But with another workmanlike, methodical comeback tied the score before halftime, scoring four consecutive goals. The scoring run continued to 6 at the start of the second half but stalled as BV began to come back to life. Strangely, Verot scored the final 6 unanswered goals and walked off with an 11-7 victory. Junior Captains Leah Volpe (3 goals) and Mia Andrillon (2 goals, 9 ground balls and a forced turnover) led Killian. Freshman Wing Lauren Cedeno scored twice for her first points for the Cougars.
Everything got better in the second game. After allowing 2 quick goals by Canterbury (also Cougars) Killian went to work and led at halftime 5-3. The second half was all Killian as they scored 9 goals, to come away with a 14-8 victory, the first of the season. Senior Sonja Dyrdal (3 goals, 2 assists), Juniors Mia Andrillon (4 goals) and Leah Volpe (2 goals), and Freshman Hilary Tobolowsky (2 goals) carried the offense. Senior Captain Landis Block (2 forced turnovers, 6 ground balls) controlled the defense and Junior Goalie G'Zelle Campos barred the goal when it counted to preserve the win.
A tired team and families stopped at The Fish House in Bonita Springs for dinner before heading back to Miami for an 8:00 arrival.
The team thanks the several parents who helped make this trip run so smoothley. So much had to be done: arrange the bus, pick up food, load and unload equipment, help warm up the kids, steal the other team's plastic cones...everything. Thanks to all (but the cones had to be sent back)!!
Solid Performance in Loss to District Leading Coral Shores
March 5, 2008
Lack of depth hurt the Cougars tonight as they fell to District leading Coral Shres 10-6. A tired Killian team was down 7-3 at the half allowing 2 goals in the last minute of the half. The second half was played evenly with both team scoring 3 goals.
Goalie G'zelle Campos helped keep the Cougars within striking distance with 19 blocks and saves, facing almost 30 shots!
5 different players scored for Killian and Amanda Schram had two goals despite being shadowed throughout the first half.
Lackluster Effort Results in Loss to Palmer-Trinity
March 4, 2008
Missed ground balls and dropped passes by the Cougars combined with sluggish play at midfield allowed Palmer-Trinity too much ball control and too many scoring opportunities. Killian's Amanda Schram and Sonja Dyrdal had 12 shots on goal but few were able to find the mark. Landis Block's 6 ground balls lead the defense.
Killian's third district loss completes the first half of district play.
Sports World Donates Practice Shirts
March 1, 2008
Many thanks to Sports World at the Kendall Mall (Kendall Dr and 107th Ave) for providing our new practice shirts. Sports World carries a selection of girls lacrosse sticks and other lacrosse stuff. Stop by if you want to check 'em out and tell them you're from the Killian Girls Lacrosse Club. Captain Landis sent them a thank you note on behalf of the team.
Comeback Spoiled in OT
February 29, 2008
After a slow start Killian methodically chipped away at Palmetto's early 3 goal lead sending the game into overtime. Palmetto's free position goal with one minute left in the extra session sealed the game and dealt the Cougars their 4th loss.
Several missed opportunities from free position by Killian and an extraordinary officiating error late in regulation time marred an otherwise exciting and hard-fought game.
Sonja Dyrdal had 4 goals for the Cougars and Goalie G'Zelle Campos made some brilliant stops during Killian's long, careful comeback.
Meltdown in last 2 minutes spoils Killian upset attempt
February 22, 2008
A chance to steal a close game against an experience Cypress Bay team evaporated when Killian broke down at the end of the second half. While holding CB to only 7 goals with under seven minutes left to play, the Cougars effort sputtered allowing 5 unanswered goals including 4 in the last 2 minutes. Cypress Bay had scored 15 or more goals in their first three games of the season and were undefeated.
Coral Shores hands Cougars second loss
February 14, 2008
Killian's home opener was spoiled by Coral Shores relentless attack, which eventually wore down the Cougars' defense. Cougars' goalkeeper G'zelle Campos was solid throughout the game and Killian was able to keep the game close, going to halftime down 3-5. But Coral Shores continued to press and eventually broke through a short-handed defense to pull away in the second half. Campos wound up with a remarkable 13 stops, some at point blank range. Center Amanda Schram and Attacker Mia Andrillon each scored 2 goals. Goals were also scored by Leah Volpe and Brittney Hernandez.
This was the first lacrosse game ever played on Kendall Soccer Park's synthetic turf field.
Cougars Humbled In Opener
February 5, 2008
An experienced Taravella HS team spoiled Killian's sophomore year opening game by dominating the play and scooting off to a 14-4 victory. Having a clear edge in loose ball control and better all-around ball control the Trojans dictated the pace of the game and held a wide edge in possession time. Killian's offense never had much time to work but Senior attacker Sonja Dyrdal managed 2 goals. Senior center Amanda Schram and senior defender Landis Block also scored.
Cougars Kick Off Season with Successful Jamboree
February 2, 2008
The 2008 Season kicked of today Saturday with the league's Preseason Classic (aka "Jamboree"). Killian showed well in the first of four 20 minute scrimmages but lost to Tarvella, our first regular season opponent, 1-3. It took one more scrimmage loss to Coral Shores, also 1-3, before the Cougars unleashed a barrage against the new South Plantation team with a 5-0 win. We finished strong against cross-town rival Palmer-Trinity by defeating them in the last scrimmage of the day 2-0! Even the two losses were encouraging since both of those teams dominated our contests last year but seemed pretty evenly matched this time.
More to come soon. First game that counts is Tuesday evening at Taravella.
