NHLPA SHARES DREAMS WITH MIHF YOUTH
October 31, 2009

MIHF has been selected by the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund as a 2009-2010 equipment donation recipient. The NHLPA is looking forward to a great partnership between the two organizations.

This donation from the NHLPA players is not only an investment in our program, but also an investment in the futures of the children who make up our community – with the hope of helping to raise healthy, confident and responsible individuals.

About NHLPA Goals & Dreams
Launched in 1999 as a way for the players to give something back to the game they love, Goals & Dreams has donated full sets of equipment to over 13,000 underprivileged children in 20 countries. In addition, over 75 ice re-surfacers and more than 110 sets of boards and glass were provided to community arenas in small towns across Europe and North America.

After eight years of success with the program, following the 2006-07 season, the NHLPA Goals & Dreams Advisory Board made the decision to focus solely on providing player equipment to children and families who could not otherwise afford it.

NHLPA Goals & Dreams is funded by NHL Players who annually allocate over $1 million to the fund, in order to help children and youth around the world get involved in the game. The players established the fund recognizing the role that hockey can play in developing a strong body and mind.

Selection for Men's National Team
October 31, 2009
The Challenge Cup of Asia (CCOA) is a regional tournament sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for non winter countries in Asia. MIHF President's Cup National Ice Hockey League
September 26, 2009 - 01:00 AM

The MIHF President's Cup National Ice Hockey league returns this September with 11 teams in Divisions 1, 2 and 3, set to take place at Sunway Pyramid Ice.

With a fair number of players rising through the ranks from Friday night Hockey School, the league continues to grow and remain competitive for all skill levels. This is encouraging as the annual selection process for the men's national team draws near. A bigger pool of candidates would ensure the quality and commitment of future national team players.

The league will bid adieu for the year on Dec 19 by featuring the finals for all three divisions. Players, officials, parents, MIHF committee members then will take a well-deserved break before returning to the ice next year.

We look forward to seeing you at the rink during the games and hope you get a taste of what ice hockey in Malaysia feels like!

Tournament Wrap Up
Wrap up by Chee Ee Laine:

Four countries, 19 teams, 45 games. The first Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament began with a simple question: How to attract players to take part in an ice hockey tournament in Malaysia? Then 3-on-3 was brought into the picture, and the rest, they say, is history.

When the puck was dropped for the first game, there was little hype. Yet as the scoresheets piled up, so too did the intensity. There were broken sticks and sweat-soaked jerseys streaming down the ice for one more shot at the goal. There were penalty shots, and missed chances, but the players always came back for more.

Many players were at the rink to cheer on their fellow countrymen and friends. A tea/coffee booth was set up for the parents and early risers while a physiotherapist was on hand should anyone require some treatment.

As one parent noted, it was heartwarming to see the children playing together off-ice at the end of the day. The tournament was a first for many local players, but they enjoyed themselves nonetheless. It was the perfect stage for them to test their skills after putting themselves through training session after training session.

With former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife Tun Jeanne Abdullah in attendance, the marquee game began with the ceremonial puck drop for the finals in Asian division. The first time the Malaysian Dexion Wildcats met the Hong Kong Hitman, the game ended in the visitors' favor. This time, the Wildcats was determined not to go away. And they prevailed with the final score 8-7, to the energetic cheer of the former prime minister himself, alongside MIHF president and organizing chairman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng.

Alas, the KL Tigers of the International division could not share the same fate. Visitors Hong Kong Tigers scored early and managed to fend off the KL attack to clinch the international division title. A pat on the back was shared by the teams at the after-party while the victor enjoyed the spoils.

Friendships were made, old ones rekindled, and sportsmanship ruled the day. MIHF and its organizing partner, KL Cobras, are inspired by the success of the tournament and wishes to thank all volunteers, players, parents, sponsors and those who have helped for making this event one to remember.

1st Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament
Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament Website

This September, bear witness to the coolest game in Malaysia with the landmark 1st Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament.

The inaugural ice hockey tournament, hosted by Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF), will take place Sept 2-5 at Sunway Pyramid Ice and will feature teams from around the Asian region.

Players, young and young-at-heart, will converge at the ice rink for round robin play before the finals will take place on Sept 5. The tournament boasts a new format, three a side plus the goalie, which is relatively new in Asia. It is a fast and exciting format which will be a pleasure for spectators to watch.

Teams from Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Jakarta, and of course Kuala Lumpur will feature in this event. There will be three divisions ? International, Asian and Youth. The international divisions is made up of expatriate clubs from around Asia, with players hailing from Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Norway, where the game of Ice Hockey is in fact more popular than Football. For the Asian division, local players are part of a rapidly growing group of athletes who are very serious about the sport; many of the players are internationals who have represented their respective countries in international competition on various occasions including the Asian Winter Games and various IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) tournaments.

All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to youth ice hockey development and to worthy charities in Malaysia. MIHF strongly believes sport can be a vehicle to make a difference in people’s lives, and thus encourages the players and those involved to give back to the community.

The chosen charity, Montfort Youth Training Centre at Kinarut is a place that caters for boys age 15-20 who come mostly from interior Sabah. At the centre, they are given vocational training on carpentry and automobile repair. The centre currently houses 130 boys, and the majority of them arrive at the centre with only the shirt on their backs. The centre is run by St Gabriel brothers.

MIHF is the governing body of ice hockey in Malaysia. All clubs (for example KHAS and Cobras) are under the umbrella of MIHF. At the same time, MIHF is also affiliated with IIHF, the governing body of ice hockey around the world.

Metro Stars upstage all-women’s team to win Div 3 title

METRO STARS showed a lot of commitment and defeated Dexion Slayers 6-3 to win the Division Three title in the Dexion Ice Hockey League at the Pyramid Ice recently.

It was an interesting match as Metro Stars comprised juniors while Dexion Slayers was an all women’s team. Metro Stars had the services of talented Hampus Molin, who hails from Sweden, Connor Sparling and Tanner Wright. The trio combined well with the local players to scored a convincing win.

However, credit should be given to Dexion Slayers, with Nur Intan Syairah, Jacklyn Gan and Joyce Yong Wei Leng playing an offensive game.

The Division Two final between Storms and Warriors was an exciting match. Storms had seasoned players who have been playing ice hockey for many years while Warriors had several local players who were looking to earn places in the national squad.

In the end, Storms, with experience on their side, dominated the game and notched a 6-0 win with Tan Kay Seng scoring three goals

The Division One final saw Asian Tigers North America and Cobras North America involved in an intense battle for the crown.

The Cobras, with Patrick Potvin playing an aggressive role in attack, were the better side and did not allow their opponents to take the upper hand. In the end the Cobras won 7-0 with goals by Potvin (3), Patrick MacDonald (1) and Alan Kneisz (2).

The league, involving 11 teams in three divisions, was organised by the Malaysian ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) with Dexion Asia as the title sponsors.

MIHF president Datuk Lee Hwa Beng said the league was a big success and had provided a platform for the Malaysian ice hockey players to gain exposure.

“We have the privilege of several foreign players being part of the league. Some of them had played in the competitive league in their respective countries. Our players are now showing better co-ordination and we are looking at grooming a strong squad for the 2011 Asian Winter Games,’’ said Lee.

YOUTH ICE HOCKEY EXHIBITION GAMES
November 22, 2008 Report on the Youth Exhibition Games prepared by Chee Ee Liane.

The Youth Ice Hockey Exhibition Games between the Malaysian and Singapore ice hockey teams began Nov. 22 at the Sunway Pyramid Ice Rink. A total of six teams took part in the exhibition game, with players' age range from 6 to 16. The players were split into three divisions, Squirts, Pee Wee and Majors.

Anticipation was high as Datuk Lee Hwa Beng, President of MIHF and Mr Frank Johnstone from Dexion Asia officiated the puck-dropping ceremony before the first game. Fans and parents lined around the rink to watch the players when the Squirts Division take over the ice.

After an uplifting 40 minutes, the players from the Pee Wee Division kept the up tempo going by putting their best effort on show. When the players from the Majors division stepped onto the ice, the crowd estimated of 2,000 was buzzing. The players fed off the energy levels from the fans and offered them a myriad of skillful plays. Chants of "Malaysia" and Singapore" could be heard around the rink.

On the second day of the tournament, players were eagerly awaiting to take to the ice in the early morning. They continued to battle for the win, and at the end, the best teams took home their prized trophies while individuals were recognised for their efforts.

With all that's said and done, new friendships were forged and old friendships rekindled. The young players were left with nothing but a memorable weekend filled with ice beneath their feet and like-minded friends

2007 ADUN Subang Jaya League (Aug - Dec): Playoffs and Finals

Division 3 roundup by Ahmad Bazli Abu Safian

In the last division 3 finals, the Metro Stars and Sunway Dragons were so closely matched that the League games were split and the final game went to multiple rounds of shootouts!

The first few games of the season indicated that this season would be similar as the games were split but somewhere near the middle of the season, the Dragons seemed to click more and took the lead in the standings. This time, the Final meeting was not so close.

The Sunway Dragons took an early lead in the first minute and except for a defensive lapse in the 2nd period that led to a Star's goal, they never looked back. Even though the Metro Stars played their hearts out, the Dragons just over powered them offensively with a mix skill and pure hardwork. The final score of 6-1 was an indication of how much the team grew together during the season. Goals for Sunway Dragons came from Intan Syairah Yusoff, Jon Phang, Atte Kangas, Ee Wui Yang and Mohd Atiq Abdul Aziz. Metro Stars goal came from Ryan Monteiro.

Division 2 roundup by Aris Samad Yahaya

It is a rare game indeed when a division 2 matchup ends up in a tie. The Division 2 playoffs were riveting, as both games ended in a tie at the end of regulation time. One was eventually determined by a penalty shootout, and the other by sudden-death overtime goal. The matchup between the Thunders and the Cardinals in the finals was somewhat unexpected, especially the presence of the Thunders, who had placed 4th in league standings but had found themselves a place in the finals.

The game started out just as tensely as the playoff games. Both teams were evenly matched, with the puck flowing from one end to the other with equal opportunity. The first period ended at 1-1. Was this to be a repeat of the playoffs? Would the game end yet again with a tie in regulation time?

In the 2nd period the pace picked up, with both teams determined to notch a point. In the end, it was the Thunders that managed to pull away. And once the Thunders started, they would not stop... in the next 2 periods they put in 5 goals, ending the finals at 6-1.

Which goes to show that in hockey anything is possible. Playing with heart, the Thunders who had placed 4th place in the league had picked up the championship trophy.

Division 1 roundup by Alex Kam

In the end it all came down to who would last longer in a physical game and the team that emerged victorious also won the overall league title, Fangs. The game was billed as two equal teams that had a very similar style of hockey and at midway through the 2nd period the Fangs were up by 1 goal with the Serpents applying tremendous pressure. With outstanding goal keeping from both teams (Peter Karlsson for the Fangs and David Munro for the Serpents) it kept the fans in suspense and on their feet (well I guess no choice since there aren’t any seats).

An unfortunate knee collision sent Serpents captain, Johnny ‘JDog’ Boulianne off the ice late in the 2nd period. Although he returned to the ice, his mobility was limited. In the end the combination of Chris ‘Cuffs’ Doyle (4 goals) and Patrick ‘Superman’ MacDonald (2 goals) proved too much for the Serpents. With Guillaume ‘G-man’ Desgranges rounding out the scoring for the Fangs, the Fangs beat the Serpents 7-3.

World Ice Hockey 5s (12 – 17 June 2007) - Wrap-Up
Ice Hockey players from Kelab Hoki Ais Saga (KHAS) experienced a first at the recently-concluded World Ice Hockey 5s tournament: for the first time, they played in a multi-country tournament on full-size ice rinks. The primary location for the tournament was at the brand-new MegaIce rink at Hong Kong’s new MegaBox mall located in Kowloon Bay. However, due to the high participation by over 61 teams from around the world, a portion of the games were played at the Macau Dome in neighboring Macau.

KHAS submitted 2 official teams: The Dexion Wildcats and the Malaysia Slayers. The Dexion Wildcats for the first time played in the Asian A Division, a highly competitive division comprising the region’s best teams. They were promoted to Division A after having won first place in Asian B Division in the 2006 World Ice Hockey 5s.

The Dexion Wildcats had a strong start, winning 5-2 in their inaugural game against Hong Kong AHC (Hong Kong Amateur Ice Hockey Club).Read more here
