LAKE ERIE BUCKEYES SEMI-PRO BASEBALL CLUB

Buckeyes vs. Cleveland Blackwolves
July 29, 2009 The Bucks know who they will face in the semi-finals of CABL Tournament. The Cleveland Blackwolves took out the C-town Woodies Tuesday night 12-0.

The game is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Brookside; however, much of the area is currently getting rain - stay tuned for any rain-related update!

BUCKEYES PLAY WEDNESDAY
The C-town Woodies and Elyria Buffalos played a 14 inning game in which C-town eventually won. The Buckeyes will await the winner of C-town and Cleveland Blackwolves and play Wednesday evening at Talty Field.

Bucks end ATC Spiders season with 12-2 Romp!!!
July 27, 2009 Monday night at Talty Field, the Lake Erie Buckeyes had one goal – win tonight. Not “what happens if we win, who would we play?” Not “would it be one game or best-of-three?” Having lost to Steve’s Sports one week ago and forced into the single elimination tournament, what choice did the Buckeyes have but to “win tonight”?

The Bucks (23-9) bats came out early and often in this one. In the bottom half of the first, catcher Josh Gaub (assuming lead-off duties for first time all year) got it going with a base-hit to right field. Randy Munshower would walk and E.J. Pokorny and Matt Brofman would follow with back-to-back hits giving the Bucks a 2-0 lead. A.J. Meyer would cap off the inning with a 2-out RBI single.

The top of the second inning would not go as smoothly as the first for starting pitcher Jay Yorty. Yorty would walk three of the first four batters in the inning, and before the Bucks could blink an eye their lead had been reduced to 3-2.

Yorty would work out of a two-walk jam in the top of 3rd to keep the game 3-2. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Bucks batter’s showed patience against ATC’s pitcher as he struggled to throw strikes.

“We were patient…we know this umpire’s strike zone is generally tighter than others, so you can really make the other pitcher work until he brings you your pitch and then its ‘sit n’ rip,” said Manager Mike Giampietro.

The Bucks ripped alright. Brofman got it going with a lead-off single and Tommy Trusnik would follow with a double. Meyer eventually would walk to load the bases for 2B Kevin Moran.

During their only match-up versus ATC this year, Moran bobbled a would-be double play ball that opened the gates for 3-run 6th inning in which the Bucks lost 4-1. This time, he was on the other side inflicting damage as he roped a base-hit to left field that scored 2 big runs, gave the Bucks a 3-run cushion again and knocked ATC’s starting pitcher from the game.

“I was just trying to make something happen…not gonna lie though, it felt even better to do it against these guys,” laughed Moran. Moran grew up and went to high school with several of the ATC players.

Matt Toth would lay down a perfect base-hit bunt to re-load the bases. But ATC’s pitcher had zero command as both Gaub and Munshower would draw walks before Pokorny, Brofman and Trusnik would cap the inning driving in 4 more runs collectively. 8 runs on 7 hits, 4 walks and now an 11-2 lead.

Yorty (7-2) came back out, settled down and simply dominated like he has all season. The Bucks ended this one in the 6th inning via the run-rule as Munshower knocked in the game winner.

The Bucks await the winner of the Cleveland Blackwolves and C-town Woodies. Due to a week of rain, scheduling dates and times have been challenging – the Bucks may either play Tuesday or Wednesday. Stay tuned to the website for updates!!!

Highlights: Yorty (Win 6IP, 2H, 2R, 7Ks) – Brofman (3-4 2B, 2RBI, 2R) – Moran (2-3 2RBI, 2R) – Pokorny (2-4 2RBI, Run)

Game Notes: The Bucks face the winner of the Cleveland Blackwolves and C-town Woodies from the National division – the Bucks lost to both teams during the regular season 7-1, 6-4 respectively. The Bucks elected to bat 9 guys (not 10) for only the third time all year – the Bucks have now run-ruled 2 of the 3 teams when doing so.

LAKE ERIE BUCKEYES vs. ATC Spiders - 7:00 (Brookside)
July 27, 2009 Game TONIGHT is at 7:00 p.m.!!! (not 7:30) Talty field, Brookside.

RAIN - Games Rescheduled
July 23, 2009 NO GAME TODAY!!!

Due to all the rain there have been no games played since Monday. Playoffs are backed up. The Buckeyes will play the winner of Lizard and Becky's who play Friday night.

THE BUCKS PLAY SUNDAY AT 4PM - GORDON #3. Be there by 3PM.

Bucks implode in 2nd inning…Never Get it going
July 20, 2009 The Lake Erie Buckeye’s route to Youngstown just got a little bit longer. In the opening round of the CABL playoffs, the Bucks fell behind 4-0 early and couldn’t manage enough scoring to get back into the game and went on to lose the Steve’s Sports 4-1.

“One bad inning…that’s all it took in this one,” said Manager Mike Giampietro.

In the top of the second inning, Steve’s got the leadoff man aboard on an error, then followed up with a double and four straight singles to go ahead 4-0 and that’s all they would need in this one. Starting pitcher Randy Munshower from that point on was lights out, but it didn’t matter as the Bucks could only muster 4 hits on the night.

“It’s unfortunate. He worked out of some jams, the defense settled down and made some plays…like Mike said, one bad inning,” said catcher Josh Gaub.

The Bucks clearly missed their cleanup hitter E.J. Pokorny in this one.

“What did we have, four hits? E.J. has been good for two hits a game alone,” said Gaub. Pokorny is hitting .506 with 40 hits on the season.

The Bucks were not without base runners though. Four Buckeyes reached base drawing walks and two more were hit by pitches, but were constantly left stranded.

To add injury to insult, the Bucks missed on a golden opportunity to face fellow American Division foe Bedford Bearcats in the Championship Series as they beat the National Division leader Cleveland Blackwolves 10-6. The Bucks had swept the Bearcats this season three games to none.

The Buckeyes now enter the single elimination tournament and will try to regroup Thursday night. The Bucks will face the winner of the Winking Lizard / Becky's game.

Highlights: None

Game Notes: Losing Monday night forces the Buckeyes into the single elimination tournament and potentially a third straight year in which the Buckeyes (formerly Blue Streaks) could face Winking Lizard. Winking lizard has ended their season in both of the previous two tournament affairs.

Bucks Clinch Crown with 3-2 Victory!!!
July 15, 2009 With several rained out games lying in limbo, the Bucks decided their own fate Wednesday for the upcoming CABL playoffs beating the Winking Lizard 3-2 to clinch the #1 seed in the American Division.

The Bucks had to come back from a two-run deficit to capture this one. Down 2, the Bucks were able to slice the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning as A.J. Meyer knocked 1B Matt Brofman. It would stay 2-1 until the 5th when Matt Toth, Brett Miller and Randy Munshower all came up huge with hits giving the Bucks a 3-2 lead.

Jay Yorty started the game and ended up going 4 innings, striking out 9 of the 12 batters he faced. The 2 lone runs he gave up were due to walks and errors. Randy Munshower came on in the 5th inning and picked up right where Yorty left off striking out 7 of the 9 batters he faced.

“When we started practicing this winter, we had several goals…we just made good on the first goal – winning our division. Now we have to gear up for the playoffs to achieve our other goals,” said Manager Mike Giampietro.

The Bucks will have to wait and see how the CABL decided to deal with the rain out games. Stay tuned for more updates as they come!

Congratulations Lake Erie Buckeyes!!!

Highlights: Munshower (Win 3IP,7Ks;1-3 RBI) – Yorty (4IP 9Ks) – Toth (2-2 RBI)

Game Notes: Jay Yorty and Randy Munshower struck out 15 batters Wednesday night out of a possible 21 outs. The come-from-behind victory was the first of the season for the Bucks when trailing after 4 innings.

Bubba Q’s WALKS away with 14-3 Win versus Bucks
July 13, 2009 The night started off well for the Lake Erie Buckeyes. Temporarily anyways. The Bucks took a 3-0 lead into the bottom half of the 3rd inning and well…that was it. Bubba Q’s sent 12 batters to plate in the inning and scored 7 times. Four of those batters reached on walks and the Bucks got no help whatsoever from the home plate umpire who was, in his own defense, equally as bad calling strikes for Fairview.

James Bader started the game and lasted into the fourth before giving up a solo shot to right field. A.J. Meyer was called upon and didn’t fair much better. Though, some credit is due to Bubba Q’s who has a solid team that can hit the ball all around the park.

“This is one I want to forget. We have big game Wednesday we need to focus on now,” explained Manager Mike Giampietro after the game.

The Bucks will look to lock up the American Division crown versus the Winking Lizard Wednesday night at Gordon Park.

Highlights: None

Game Notes: The 14 runs surrendered by the Bucks pitching staff was the most this season, as well as the 10 total walks.

Bucks Scalp the Chiefs 11-1!!!
July 12, 2009 Those pesky 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning games are nobody’s friend…especially if you are of the age 18-35. Late summer nights lead to problems for most teams in getting enough guys to the ballpark on-time, and able to field a full lineup. That being said, the Bucks (21-7, 15-5) were able to start with 9 guys and take it to the 8 Chiefs that showed up Sunday morning. The Chiefs, forced to start with 2 outfielders, were behind early and often in this one.

“I told Mike [Manager] ‘listen I’m pitching AND I’m hitting today’,” explained Johnny White.

Giampietro’s Response: “Good…we don’t have a choice…”

Johnny white did himself no disservice going 5 strong innings, striking out 5, all the while going 2-3 with 2 RBI and scoring 2 runs. White had quite the fan club in the stands this morning cheering his every pitch and every swing.

Hits were aplenty in this one as the Bucks wrapped it up in 5 innings via the “mercy rule.”

Though, the Bucks DID slap the leather around a little bit in this one too. In what probably should have been an easy single in the last inning, the Chiefs batter lazily trotted to first base after the ball went into right field – RF Josh Gaub had other plans as he came up firing to first base to gun the runner out! That’s “GO 9-3” if you’re scoring at home.

The Bucks will be back in action in a non-league contest against Bubba Q’s of Fairview Park Monday night.

Highlights: Johnny White (Win 5IP, 5Ks – 2-3, 2RBI, 2R) – Giampietro (2-3 2B, 1RBI, 2R) – Gaub (2-2 3B(2), 3RBI, 2R)

Game Notes: Beating the Chiefs Sunday puts the Buckeyes at 2-4 versus the National division.

Bucks Show Why They Are On TOP!
July 8, 2009 “Every game is important.”

Another one of those silly clichés managers like to use. However, when you find yourself with a one-game lead in the standings over the team you still have 3 games against, the cliché seems to ring truer than ever.

This game took less than 90 minutes complete, as pitcher Jay Yorty was his dominant self pitching a complete game 3-hit shutout! The Lake Erie Buckeyes (20-7, 14-5) beat the second place Fairview Marlins Wednesday night 1-0 with an impressive performance at Gordon Park.

“He was a different pitcher tonight…he had his swagger like ‘these guys can’t beat me’ “explained catcher Josh Gaub. “He used the defense and we made some plays.”

Fairview’s starting pitcher actually pitched pretty well too, but the Bucks were able to get a run in the first inning and hang on to the lead throughout the game. With 2 outs, 1B Matt Brofman grounded one to the shortstop who couldn’t handle it and Chaz Leftridge would come across the plate for the game’s only run. The Bucks actually were out-hit in this one 3 to 2, but a win is a win at this stage in the season.

The Bucks still have 2 more games versus the Fairview Marlins which is scheduled for Saturday July 11th.

Highlights: Yorty (Win CG, 3H, 5Ks) – Meyer (2-2 SB)

Game Notes: LF A.J. Meyer had the Bucks two lone hits on the evening. Catcher Josh Gaub was thrown out for the first time this season attempting to steal third base in the 4th inning.

Buckeyes Take Care of Buffaloes 7-1!
July 6, 2009 The Lake Erie Buckeyes (19-7, 13-5) completed the series sweep of the Elyria Buffaloes Monday night with a 7-1 victory.

Dan Hoesel got the start and went 5 strong innings, striking out 6 before turning the ball over to James Bader to close out the final 2 innings.

The Bucks wasted no time jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after a barrage of hits by Pokorny, Brofman, Trusnik and Morton.

In the second inning, three straight Buckeye batters would be hit by pitches leading to another run tacked on. That was plenty of runs as the Bucks collected their 19th win of the season Monday and will look for number 20 against second place Fairview Marlins Wednesday in what should prove to be a good game.

Highlights: Hoesel (Win, 5IP Run, 3H, 6Ks) – Pokorny (2-2 2B, RBI, Run) – Munshower (2-2 Run)

Game Notes: Four Buckeyes were hit by pitches Monday night. In the 4th inning, the Buckeyes’ side was struck out for the first time ALL season – the unfortunate contributors were Meyer, Miller and Moran.

4 Buckeyes Named All-Stars!
The Buckeyes have named their 3, 4 and 5 hitters as their 2009 All-Stars! 3B E.J. Pokorny, catcher/RF Josh Gaub and 1B Matt Brofman have come big for the Bucks so far in 2009 and will ALL be starters for the American League Friday night. Pitcher Jay Yorty was named as an alternate selection and will represent the Buckeyes as well Friday night at Brookside Park. Congratulations guys!!!

Buckeyes Fall Apart in 4th of July Tournament
July 5, 2009 One game was all it took to eliminate the Bucks from moving on to “Championship Sunday” in the Firecracker Classic held in Willoughby, OH. After beating up on Wayne Holmes 16-1 in the opening game of the tourney, the Bucks let a 4-0 lead get away from them Friday morning.

Showing some resilience, the Bucks fought from 5 down with one out in the last inning to tie the game at 9-9. However, three straight walks and a deep single in the bottom half of the inning proved to be the difference in this one. The Buckeyes did little to help themselves in the 5th inning when Allegheny scored 5 times on 4 errors.

“We showed some good fight in this one, being down 5 runs late, but on the flip side, we should have never been put in that situation,” explained frustrated Manager Mike Giampietro.

The Bucks (18-7, 12-5) would go on to beat Old Brooklyn 9-4 in the late game Saturday, but losing the head-to-head to North Allegheny cost the Bucks a chance at advancing.

North Allegheny would end up winning the tournament by defeating fellow CABL division leader Cleveland Blackwolves 7-5.

Meyer, Bucks Rip Blacksox 9-0!
June 29, 2009 Outfielder A.J. Meyer put at least a temporary stop to the revolving door which has been the Buckeyes outfield. Meyer went 3 for 3, scoring three times Monday night in helping the Bucks (16-6, 12-5) defeat the Blacksox 9-0. Meyer has started the last four games for Lake Erie and has had at least one hit in each of those games.

“He’s one of our hottest hitters right now,” said Manager Mike Giampietro following the game. “He’s not going anywhere,” Giampietro said of plugging Meyer into the Bucks everyday lineup.

Meyer led things off in the second inning and quickly stole second. One batter later 3B Chaz Leftridge would knock in Meyer. Leftridge would end up on second after a Blacksox error and was later knocked in by 1B Tommy Kazimer who was making his first start of the season playing the field. After Kazimer stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, starting pitcher Johnny White helped his own cause knocking in the third run of the inning.

White (3-0) continued his consistent pitching Monday surrendering 1 hit through five innings of work, while striking out four Blacksox batters.

The Buckeyes added 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth and fifth, and finally 2 more in the 6th.

Brett Miller came on in relief for White for the first time this year and did his thing striking out 7 in two innings of work – that’s not a typo either. Miller struck out the side in the 6th as well as the first batter to start the 7th, but the pitch was mishandled by Moran and an errant throw allowed the runner to reach first base. He would walk the next two batters before striking out 3 straight to end the game.

The Buckeyes will take on the Strongsville Mustangs in the rubber-match of the regular season Wednesday at Gordon Park.

Highlights: A.J. Meyer (3-3 3B, 3R, 2SB) – Leftridge (2-3 RBI, Run) – Gaub (2-4 2SB, Run) – White (Win 5IP, 4Ks, 1Hit / 0-1 RBI) – Miller (2IP, 7Ks / 1-1 Run)

Game Notes: Kevin Moran made his first start of the season behind the dish – E.J. Pokorny was penciled in to start but was a late scratch with an eye injury. Pokorny is leading the Bucks offense hitting .500. The Buckeyes stole 12 bases Monday night smashing their previous record of 5 in one game.

Errors Cost Bucks Sunday, Lose 4-1 to Spiders
June 28, 2009 One bad inning…and so goes the game.

With the game tied in the top of the 6th inning and a seemingly tailor-made double play ball in order, the Bucks (15-6, 11-5) were hoping to escape a close game with the ATC Spiders. This Sunday, like so many others, it was not to be.

Losing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th, left fielder A.J. Meyer knocked in catcher Josh Gaub with 2 outs to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Bucks, this would be their lone run of the game.

Starting pitcher Randy Munshower was holding the Spiders in check until the 6th when a weak base hit started the inning. In what many believed was a “for sure” bunt situation, the Spiders next batter swung away and gift-wrapped the Bucks a hard hit ground ball that was mishandled by 2B Kevin Moran. Munch was able to strike out the next batter, but hung a curve ball that cleared CF Derrick Headland’s glove for a base-clearing triple. A wild pitch would allow the Spiders to cap their 3-run inning.

“I don’t even know what to say right now. This is one is over with. We have the Blacksox tomorrow…” said frustrated Manager Mike Giampietro after the game.

The Buckeyes will take on the Blacksox at Brookside Monday night at 7:30. In their last meeting, Lake Erie thumped the Blacksox 14-2.

Highlights: NONE.

Game Notes: The Buckeye’s managed only 6 hits on the day…the Spiders only 4.

Bucks Run Over the Lizard 9-6 Wednesday Night!
June 24, 2009 The Bucks came into Wednesday night’s game having won their last 3 games after dropping 3 of the previous 4. Winking Lizard always plays the Buckeyes tough and this game would be no different. The Bucks (15-4, 11-4) had to rely on some timely hitting to get this win.

Dan Hoesel started on the mound for the Bucks and didn’t have his dominant stuff, but was effective enough to keep the Bucks in it. Lake Erie gave him a 1-0 lead after RF Brett Miller knocked in CF Tommy Trusnik in the second inning. They would get another run in the third after an RBI ground out by SS Randy Munshower. Though, Winking Lizard quickly recaptured the lead with a 3-run third inning.

“Well, we walked the leadoff batter of the inning and then we didn’t get outs we’re supposed to get…3 errors in the inning, we’re lucky they only got 3 runs,” said Manager Mike Giampietro.

The Bucks heart of the order responded the following inning as C Josh Gaub, 1B Matt Brofman and 3B E.J. Pokorny led off the inning with three straight singles. RF Brett Miller hit sac-fly and Giampietro came through with a single and the Bucks were back on top 4-3.

Another lead off walk to start the 5th inning would allow the Lizard to tie the game at 4-4. That lead would not last as the Bucks plated 2 more runs in the 6th. The resiliency of the Lizard showed up once more in the bottom half of the inning as they tied the game once again at 6-6.

“I always say, ‘walks will kill you’ but there’s nothing worse than a lead-off walk to start an inning. We had 4 tonight, that’s going to have to change,” explained Gaub after the game.

Hit batsman are just as crippling, just ask Winking Lizard. With the game tied, Randy Munshower took a fastball right in the back to start the 7th. Seemingly in a lot of pain, Munch “manned-up” and stayed in the game. He would later come around to score the go-ahead run on a huge clutch single by Pokorny. The Bucks added some insurance runs after a wild pitch and Trusnik’s third hit of the night plated another run. Taking a 9-6 lead into the 7th the Bucks called on Pokorny to slam the door shut and pick up the win.

The Bucks will be off until Sunday when they take on ATC Spiders at 11:00 a.m. at Gordon Park.

Highlights: Trusnik (3-4 3B, 2R, RBI, SB) – Pokorny (Win, 2-4, 2R, RBI, SB) – Brofman (2-3 2R) – Miller (2-3 2B, 2RBI, SB)

Game Notes: In 3 total innings Pokorny has pitched this year, 6 of the 9 outs he’s recorded have come in the form of a strikeout.

Munch Goes the Distance to Complete Sweep of Bedford!
June 21, 2009 The Bucks won a sloppy game the Friday night versus Bedford. And it’s no secret Sunday games have been the Bucks kryptonite. Starting pitcher Randy Munshower had other plans this Sunday as he dismantled the Bearcat bats going 7 strong innings leading the Bucks (14-5, 10-4) to a 4-0 victory in sweeping the Bearcats this year.

“All day long he was throwing strikes…of the 20 or 30 guys he faced, I bet he was ahead 0-1 on all but maybe six guys. Walks have killed us in the losses this year and he [Munch] didn’t walk one guy,” said catcher Josh Gaub after the game.

Munshower finished with 8 K’s while scattering 5 hits on the day. The Buckeyes themselves only had 5 hits in this one as Bedford’s catcher would make 2 costly errors as well as a passed ball to help the Bucks the W.

Highlights: Munshower (Win, CG, 8Ks, 5HBrofman (2-3, Run, 2SB) – A.J. Meyer (1-2 2R, BB)

Game Notes: The Bucks swept the regular season versus Bedford 3-0, after getting swept 3-0 last year by the Bearcats. 1B Matt Brofman stole 2 bases Sunday bringing his tally to 8 and tying him for the team lead with catcher Josh Gaub.

Bucks Dodge Rain, Sloppy Play to Take Win Versus Bedford
June 19, 2009 The prospects of playing any baseball whatsoever Friday night were slim to none. However the rain stayed just south of Gordon Park allowing the Bucks to take down the Bedford Bearcats 8-7 in an error filled game by both teams.

The Bucks (13-5, 9-4) were down 1-0 after the first inning but promptly came back to take the lead on a huge 2-out 2 run single by Dan Hoesel in the second. Bedford would tie in the third inning before the Bucks scored big in the fourth plating 4 runs on ZERO hits.

Leading 6-2, starting pitcher Jay Yorty tried to hold Bedford back but quickly reached 100 pitchers thrown by middle of the 5th inning. Dan Hoesel cam on in relief and pitched an excellent 2 2/3 innings holding Bedford to 3 runs on 6 hits.

Going into the last inning the Bucks led 8-5 and Hoesel struck out the first two batters he faced. The game seemingly in hand, Bedford never gave up knocking out 3 straight hits making it 8-7 with runners on the corners. The next batter hit a slow-roller in front of the plate that was heading foul before catcher Josh Gaub pounced on it and threw to first for the final out in this wild game.

“Both teams played sloppy tonight…but hey, we battled and Hoesel gave a chance to get the W,“ explained Manager Mike Giampietro after the game.

The Bucks will be back at with Bedford Sunday morning at 11:00 at Gordon Park.

Highlights: Miller (1-3 3R, 3SB) – Pokorny (1-3 2R, SB) – Hoesel (1-2 3RBI)

Game Notes: The 7 runs given up by Bucks pitching marked the second time this season 7 runs have been given up – the other came in a loss to National Division Leader Cleveland Blackwolves.

Games Cancelled
June 17, 2009 The Buckeyes double header versus the Fairview Marlins was a wash Wednesday night. The games have not yet been rescheduled. Lake Erie will take on Bedford Friday night at Gordon Park in the first of 2 games in 3 days versus the Bearcats.

Bucks Bounce Back Against Buffalos
June 15, 2009 Every season, no matter the sport, there will almost inevitably be a tough stretch. As cliché as it sounds, it’s true. The Bucks are hoping their 10-0 win Monday night versus the Buffalos marked the end of that stretch. The Bucks (12-5, 9-4) came into the game having lost their last two games, and 3 of their last 4 during the span of just seven days.

“We needed to get back on track…get back to the fundamentals of baseball,” said Manager Mike Giampietro after the game. “How many guys did we walk tonight? I don’t think we walked one single guy…good things, no GREAT things happen when you throw strikes.”

Munshower (3-1) was pounding the zone all night for the Buckeyes finishing with 5 K’s and only surrendering 4 hits through 5 innings. Munch got some run support early in the first inning, as 2B J.R. Jacoby would single to left and take second base on a fielding error by Elyria’s left fielder. Then, just as he did in the first inning of Sunday’s game versus Steve Sports, RF Josh Gaub would knock a double down the right field line. The ball trickled past the Elyria’s right fielder and before they knew it Gaub was coming around third to score on an error-gifted inside-the-park HR.

“Two days in a row…I’m getting too old for this sh*t!” laughed an exhausted Gaub after scoring.

Dan Hoesel led the third inning off with a base hit to center and the Bucks quickly added 5 more runs to go up 7-0. The Buffalos had all but thrown in the towel by the fifth inning as 1B Matt Brofman and CF Tommy Trusnik would knock in the final 3 runs to end this one early via the mercy rule.

Weather permitting; the Bucks will have an unusual weeknight “double-dip” Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. versus the Fairview Marlins at Talty Field. The second game is make-up from the May 27th rainout.

Highlights: Munshower (Win, 5 IP, CG, 5K, 4H) – Jacoby (2-3 2R, RBI, SB) –
Gaub (1-2 Double, 3R, 2RBI, SB) – Brofman (1-3 Run, 2RBI)

Game Notes: The 10 runs scored Monday marks the fifth time the Bucks have put up double digits in the run category this season. Monday was only the second time this season 3B E.J. Pokorny did not record a hit. LF Kevin Moran was the first batter in the lineup Monday – he is the 6th player to do so for the Bucks this season.

Buckeyes Fall To Steve's Sports 5-2
June 14, 2009 "We have always said that we don't get up for those early Sunday morning games!! Well what happen today?? A late Sunday game with the same result. We could say its just a Sunday thing but that excuse ran out after Wednesday's loss. What's going on?? There's too much talent on this team to lose the last 3-4 games" - commented manager Mike Giampietro while leaving the field early Sunday evening.

Two unbeaten pitchers whom both haven't given up a run this year set the tone for a game played in just over an hour and a half. The Bucks jumped out first in this one though as a Gaub fly ball down the line turned into the first run of the game as the ball skipped under the right fielders glove and Gaub circled the bases making it 1-0. That was about as exciting as it was going to get for the Bucks. A few crazy hops here, missed call there, and an error to boot, the Bucks found themselves playing from behind once again. Lake Erie had the bases loaded with no outs in the 4th but only managed to get 1 run out of it on a Chaz Leftridge Sac Fly. Jay Yorty went the distance in picking up his first loss of the year. While only two of the runs were EARNED it still goes in the loss column. "Good teams manage to put the ball in play against good pitching. You can't help out a team like that with free passes either" commented manager Mike Giampietro. "Steve's Sports took advantage of everything given to them today as a good team does". Buckeyes pitching continues to struggle with giving up walks as 2 more walks managed to touch the plate this evening.

Now the question...... When are the baseball GODS going to shine down on the Buckeyes? When will someone step up? These are all questions yet to be determined in a season that is passing the Buckeyes by with the 4th of July soon ahead. With 5 league games in the next 7 days the Buckeyes need to come together as a complete unit. The Buckeyes 11-5 (8-4 CBF) return to action Monday evening versus an improved Elyria team.

GAME NOTES: BUCK UP ALREADY!! LET'S FU**IN GO!! ~ COACH

Mustangs KICK Buckeyes
June 10, 2009 After getting no hit and blanked 10-0 in their previous meeting against the Buckeyes, the Strongsville Mustangs showed up with a chip on their shoulder Wednesday evening. Mustangs pitcher Josh Fargus took the hill with something to prove - and he did just that. Fargus yielded only 5 hits and struck out 8 Buckeye hitters while keeping them off balance all night. Buckeye hitters failed to come through when needed and when it was all over the Mustangs walked away with a hard fought 4-3 win over Lake Erie. While Buckeye pitchers yielded only 4 hits it was the 8 walks that proved to be fatal. Three of the four Mustang runs were walks that managed to make it around and score. "This Buckeye team just hasn't come together as expected yet" manager Mike Giampietro stated after the game. The Buckeyes 11-4 (8-3 CBF) now move into the toughest part of their league schedule as they will take on defending champ Steve's Sports on Sunday afternoon at Gordon Park.

Bucks Scorch Sox
June 8, 2009 After leaving the field stunned on Sunday afternoon, the Buckeyes 11-3 (8-2 CBF) managed to scorch the Black Sox this evening as expected. The Buckeyes took care of business in 5 innings walking away with a 14-2 win. Hoesel picked up his 3rd win of the season going the distance in this one while only giving up 3 hits. Leading the way for the Buckeyes bats were Meyer, Miller, Pokorny, and Brofman whom all managed 2 hits a piece. "This is a game we are expected to win" manager Mike Giampietro commented. The Buckeyes will return to action on Wednesday evening at Brookside against a young Strongsville team.

Buckeyes Never Wake Up Sunday Morning
June 7, 2009 Sunday morning games continue to be the thorn in the side of the Buckeyes. After jumping ahead 2-0 in the first inning, the Buckeyes could never recapture the lead in this one, as they would lose 6-4 to the C-Town Woodies. Johnny White got the start and seemed to be cruising with the 2-0 lead until the fourth inning. He retired the first batter of the inning and then the wheels fell off – the Buckeyes (10-3, 7-2) then committed 2 errors and another “miscue” which would allow C-Town to tie the game 2-2.

“That inning killed us...guys not covering bases, lackadaisical play. But it wasn’t just that inning, overall, we just did not play well,” said Manager Mike Giampietro following the loss.

C-Town would go ahead 4-2 in the 6th inning when 2B Beckman would hit a 2-run HR to left off White. Showing some resilience, the Bucks would tie the game up 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning. Though, the inning had the potential to be much bigger as the Bucks had the bases loaded with no one out and only managed to get 2 runs to tie it.

Tommy Kazimer, who had relieved White in the 6th inning, would walk the first 2 batters in the 7th inning. Chaz Leftridge came on in relief and almost got of trouble but C-Town was able to break the tie and get 2 runs that would put the Woodies on top for good 6-4.

The Bucks will try and bounce back against the Blacksox tonight at Gordon Park. The Bucks beat up on the Blacksox in their last meeting 10-0.

Highlights: Brofman (2-3, triple, 2 RBI) – Leftridge (2-3)

Game Notes: The Bucks gave up their first HR of the year. C/DH Gaub struck out for the 4th time this year – he K’d 5 times all last season.

Bucks “Munch” on Lizard Friday Night!
June 5, 2009 The Buckeyes continue to call upon Randy Munshower to take the hill against the league’s top teams and he’s been nothing short of great in those games. Munch went the distance Friday night striking out 10 batters, while allowing 4 hits and one walk as the Buckeyes defeated Winking Lizard 2-0.

“They [Winking Lizard] left a sour taste in our mouth last year knocking us out of the playoffs. This was a nice one to get,” said Munch following the game. Munshower has improved his record to 2-1 on the year.

The Bucks (9-3, 7-1) got some timely hitting from the middle of their lineup in the fourth and sixth inning as Matt Brofman, E.J. Pokorny and Tommy Trusnik all had clutch hits in this one. Two runs was more than enough for Munch and the Bucks as they took the W.

The Buckeyes will take on C-Town Woodies Sunday morning at Gordon Park.

Highlights: Munshower (CG, 10 K’s, 4 H) – Brofman (2-2, 3B, Run) – Pokorny (1-2, 2B, RBI) – Trusnik (1-2, RBI, BB)

Game Notes: Catcher Josh Gaub left the game in the first inning after rolling his ankle...the game took only 1 hr and 45 minutes to complete.

[K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K] - [K]
June 1, 2009 That’s pretty much what you would have seen had a kid brought a stack full of paper K’s to the game Monday night. Starting pitcher Jay Yorty threw 5 innings of 1-hit baseball, striking out 12 of the 15 Mustang batters as the Lake Erie Buckeyes (9-2) defeated Strongsville 10-0 to boost their record to 6-1 in league play. “He changed his arm angle, threw strikes and kept them [Strongsville] off-balanced all night. He dominated,” explained catcher Dan Niemczura. Yorty (3-0) got plenty of run support too right from the get go as the Buckeyes put up 4 runs in the first inning. Kevin Moran and Josh Gaub got things going with back-to-back hits before third-baseman E.J. Pokorny would double them in. Matt Brofman and Tommy Trusnik would later knock in 2 more. The Buckeyes banged out 13 hits on the night ending this one in 5 innings. While the Bucks pitched well and hit the ball all night long, probably one of the brighter notes on the night was the restored confidence of center fielder Derek Headland’s swing. Headland went 3-3 scoring two runs on three line drive base hits. “I’d been struggling, and after I got a pinch-hit single in the previous game, I knew my swing was back,” said Headland. Headland came into the season as the Bucks starting center fielder on paper and he’s making a case to regain or hold onto it. “Before the game, I told the guys they need to start stepping up earning their place in the lineup,” said Manager Mike Giampietro after the game. “I think many guys are starting to do just that.” The Bucks will look to make it three straight Friday night at 7:30 as they take on Winking Lizard at Talty Field.

Highlights: Yorty (WIN, 12K’s, 1 H) – Headland (3-3, Run, RBI, SB) – Gaub (2-4, 2RBI, Run) – Pokorny (2-4, 3RBI, Run) – Brofman (2-3, RBI, Run)

Game Notes: Dan Niemczura made his first start of the season behind the dish for the injured Jay Donovan. 1B Matt Brofman has reached base safely in all 11 games of the season.

Kazimer Guides Bucks to 3-1 Win!
May 31, 2009 Making his first start of the season, Tommy Kazimer was called on to hold CMBC / Davis in check. All he did was go 5 innings strong, giving up 1 run, on 1 hit, while striking out 6 in the Buck's 3-1 victory! The Bucks would strike first in the top half of the first inning as CMBC would balk in a run. The Bucks (8-2, 5-1) would add 2 more runs in the second inning to go up 3-0. CMBC would get 1 run back in the bottom half of the second, but Kazimer quickly shut down their offense. Things got a little shaky in the bottom of the seventh as Pokorny came in to close out the game. CMBC would load the bases with 2 outs, but SS Randy Munshower preserved the win making a diving catch between short and third to end the game. "I just reacted to the ball and made the catch. We really wanted to get back on the winning end of things and get Tommy the win...he pitched a great game," said Munch after the game. The win puts the Bucks at 5-1 in league play. They're back in action Monday night to take on the Strongsville Mustangs.

Game Cancelled!
May 27, 2009 The Buckeyes / Marlins game has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. The game has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday June 17th as the Bucks will play a weeknight double-header versus the Fairview Marlins.

Blackwolves Quiet Buck’s Bats
May 24, 2009 The Buckeyes (7-2, 4-1) are still trying to find the right combination, offensively and defensively, one through nine they can count on, day in and day out.

The Bucks fell 7-1 Sunday to a solid Cleveland Blackwolves (4-0) team who banged out 13 hits on the day. Injuries and quiet bats have forced the Bucks to start shuffling around the lineup card in order to get more production out of guys. The Bucks managed only 5 hits on the day against Blackwolves pitching. Though, mental lapses probably cost the Bucks a few runs in this one. "I'm more concerned with guy's hitting the "cut" [cut-off man] and playing "heads-up" baseball than the bats. The hits will come...we just can't be giving them free bases and free outs," said Manager Mike Giampietro of the 4 errors on the day. "We've probably had a different line-up out there each game this year...it's still very early and we'll bounce back. This was just a good team that put the bat on the ball," said catcher Josh Gaub. The Bucks will be back in action Wednesday to take on the Fairview Marlins.

Pokorny Continues Hot Streak!!!
May 22, 2009 No one has started the 2009 season hotter than E.J. Pokorny. Eight games into the season, Pokorny is hitting .615 with 16 hits and is showing no signs of slowing down. Friday night, Pokorny’s bat knocked out 4 more hits in leading the Buckeyes to a 9-3 victory over the Elyria Buffalos. The Bucks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. In the third, Pokorny, Matt Brofman and Jay Donavan banged out three straight singles and the Bucks went up 5-0. Elyria would cut into that lead with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half. But the Bucks were just too much as they added one more in the 6th and three in the 7th. Ricky Blasey had solid night at the plate going 3-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Dan Hoesel went 5 strong innings to pick up the win. Eliminating any hopes of a comeback in the 7th, the Bucks brought in Pokorny to close the door – he faced three batters and that was it. The Buckeyes improved to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play. They will take on the Cleveland Blackwolves Sunday who have put together a strong squad in their first season in the League.

Bucks Rally Behind Munch’s Arm AND Bat!
May 20, 2009 Ricky Henderson finished his career with 81 lead off homeruns to start a game. Often in baseball, nothing sets the tone better than grabbing the lead one batter into the game. Munshower provided that tone sending the fifth pitch of the game soaring over the left field fence! The Bucks would go up early and never look back in routing Bedford 11-2. Munshower held the Bearcats to 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings of work, striking out 7. The Bucks were all over Bedford’s pitchers pounding out 14 hits on the night! Leading the way was third baseman E.J. Pokorny with 4 hits and 2 RBI. Munshower, Bader and Martinez all had 2 hits a piece. The Buckeyes will be back in action Friday night facing the Elyria Buffalos.

Yorty throws NO-hitter!!!
May 18, 2009 When you’re on, you’re on…and when you are dominant, well…there’s not much the other team can do against you. The only thing that kept Jay Yorty (2-0) from striking out more batters was the Bucks offense. This one ended early as the Bucks rolled the Blacksox 10-0 in 5 innings! Yorty struck out 8 of the 15 batters he faced, walking only 1 batter in 5 innings of work in route to improving to 2-0 on the year. Munshower led things off in the first getting hit by a pitch and then quickly stole second. Gaub would double him in and one batter later, third baseman E.J. Pokorny switched places with him adding his own double. The Bucks only needed 8 hits to get this win. The Bucks will take on Bedford Bearcats Wednesday night. The Bearcats had the Bucks number last year beating them 3 times.

White 2-0 to start 2009 Season as Bucks Shutout Becky’s 7-0!
May 17, 2009 Consistency. That’s all the Bucks ask of veteran Johnny White. Sunday afternoon, Johnny White (2-0) would not disappoint in going 5 innings strong before turning the ball over to A.J. Meyer to finish off the game. “He [White] hits his spots and throws strikes…you can’t ask for much more out of your pitcher,” said catcher Josh Gaub. The Bucks took down Becky’s 7-0 behind the bats of Dan Hoesel (2 for 4) and Randy Munshower (1 for 3) who plated 3 on the day. The Bucks will be back in action tomorrow night to face the Blacksox.

Buckeyes Start 2009 Strong
May 11, 2009 The Lake Erie Buckeyes went 3-1 in their first four games of the 2009 season. Saturday afternoon, the Buckeyes took down the Ann Arbor A’s 5-0 and then followed with an impressive 8-0 victory over the Michigan area Detroit Tigers. Behind the arms Johnny White (1-0) and Dan Hoesel (1-0), the bucks did not give up a single run on the day. In the first game, C/OF Josh Gaub would give the Bucks some breathing room in the bottom half of the 6th inning with a 3-run HR to left. Third baseman E.J. Pokorny would go 3-3 and first baseman Matt Brofman 2-3 in the win. The Bucks got some help from the Tigers defense in the second game as they finished with 6 errors. Dan Clarke had two hits in the game.

The Bucks would split the Sunday games beating the Ann Arbor Tigers 3-0 and then losing to a tough Pontiac Parkers team 6-4. Jay Yorty (1-0) and Randy Munshower (1-0) took W and L respectively. “Overall, I’m pleased with what I saw this weekend. We did some good things, but we still have some things we need to improve on,” explained Manager Mike Giampietro after the game. The Bucks will begin league play the following week.
