H1 N1 information - please read

Cold and flu season is upon us, and there is much concern regarding the spread of respiratory disease.

Prevention is the first defence.  We have adopted the following guidelines from the Public Health Agency of Canada, which recommends the following:

The most important factors to consider in controlling the spread of the pandemic (H1N1) influenza virus are:

    •    Early identification of ill children exhibiting symptoms of H1N1

    •    Exclusion from the setting of anyone ill with symptoms of H1N1

    •    Practicing cough/sneeze etiquette (cough and/ or sneeze into tissue or elbow)

    •    Frequent hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds

Symptoms of H1N1 are:

    •    Fever

    •    Cough

    •    Sore throat

    •    Body aches

    •    Headache

    •    Chills and fatigue

    •    Occasionally, vomiting and diarrhea

If you suspect your child may have H1N1 or the seasonal flu, please keep him or her home and away from other people until he or she is better.

To speak with a nurse, contact HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, 24 hours a day.  For more information on H1N1, please go to www.gov.bc.ca/h1n1.

Our Oct 10 2009 Intra Club Meet went very well.  Swimmer swam some very good races despite only being in the water a short period of time.

Thank you to all the parents who came out to support their children and help with timing/officiating.

A big thank you to Dorothy Clark who provided the water and treats for the officials and coaches!!

Please help out at all meets.  We need new and experienced members to help out to make your child's sport a success.  Whether is it L/A OSC hosting a swim meet or your child is at another swim meet help is needed.  You do not have to be an experienced swimming person to work a stop watch or help out in any capacity.  If you have any clinics you would like to take to become more experienced and or certified please let us know.

Officials Clinic - October 21

There is an officials clinic coming up this month in North Van on Oct 21.  Many of you may have read the email and wondered if this course applies to you.  The answer to this question is........YES.  If you have a child in swim club you should be getting some certification in order to help out at swim meets.  The minimum qualification for parents should be a level one timers course.  This course is a great introduction to how swim meets are run and what your role is as a timer.  As your child moves up to higher level meets you would then want to consider taking a course at a higher level.  These are great opportunities to meet parents from other clubs and create some new on deck relationships.

The following list should give you a good idea of levels of certification that are good to have:

Jr Olympians and Olympic Way - timer
Regional and Stroke Improvement - timer, chief timer and starting to work on stroke and turn
Provincial group - stroke and turn, clerk of course, meet manager, starter
National group - parents should be well on their way to level 3 official and working towards level 4 and 5 referee

At this time in swimming there are very few referees that still have children swimming and it is getting harder to find senior officials to help run our meets.  In order for our senior parents to get their level 4 and 5 badges we need more parents to take over roles of starter, clerk of course and meet manager so that we have a wide range of officials to utilize within our club.  If you have taken your timers certifiction and are not sure what course to take then please let me know and I can tell you where we need the most help.

If you wish to carpool to the officials clinic in North Van please contact Linda at lindajmetcalfe@telus.net as she has room in her vehicle for 6 more parents.
Thank you,

Kurt Wins 10 & Under Coach of the Year

This weekend at the B.C. Coaches Conference in Whistler, Kurt Murphy was presented with the 10 and Under Coach of the Year Award for 2008/2009 season. Kurt, who was Assistant Head Coach last season, won this award based on the performance of the 10 and Under swimmers he coached in the Short Course (25m pool) and Long Course (50m pool) Provincial Championships. When a swimmer placed in the top 8 in an event at Provincials, this earns points and the coach with the most points wins this prestigious trophy. The LOSC swimmers who achieved top 8 places, enabling Kurt to win, were Hillary Metcalfe, Devon Mark, Trista Tetreault, Amelia Blair, Jessie Gibson, William Karpan and Justin Schramm. This is the first year an LOSC coach has won the 10 & Under Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Kurt and all his swimmers.

Chelsey Makes National Team

Chelsey Salli has made the Canadian Junior National Team in the 200 IM. Swimmers who have the fastest time and or highest FINA point score (one event per swimmer) get selected. Chelsey, who broke the 15 - 17 years BC Record in the 200 IM in the summer, is currently in Arizona starting her first year at the University of Arizona with LOSC team mate Jake Tapp. Chelsey has done herself and LOSC proud this summer and we look forward to following her future successes.
