10/29/09 - PATRIOTS BASEBALL 'TURN-2' TOY DRIVE
Brandon Weir is starting a toy drive and will be asking the high school baseball players to get involved and help out with it. He's calling it the Patriots Baseball 'Turn-2' Toy Drive and he's working with the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with their annual Winterfest program. We have created a flyer, that describes the program and the associated dates. Click here to view the Toy Drive Flyer. It will run from November 9 -December 12. We are looking to collect new toys and the Turn-2 aspect encourages people to donate 2 toys instead of just one.
Winterfest is conducted by the Chamer of Commerce and they identify children throughout the various grade schools that are less fortunate and would not otherwise be having much of a Christmas. They solicit donations from area businesses and setup collection boxes for toy donations. One evening close to Christmas, they invite all of the families that were identified to come to the LCHS cafeteria and they have Santa Claus, music and they usually have some type of meal for the people. They hand out a wrapped gift to each child and a bag with some fruit and a treat. Since the baseball team will be responsible for collecting a lot of the toys that will be handed out, the president of the Chamber suggested that the players come and hand out gifts in their baseball uniforms. She said it would make it even more special for the kids receiving the gifts.
We will have collection boxes at Patriot Sports, Precision Fitness, and the High School. Brandon is also going to talk with the 6th Grade Center and the Middle School about getting involved with the program as well and have collection boxes. Some of the things he'll need the boys to help out with are:
Handing out flyers at different locations to let people know about the program. They will be handing out flyers at the football game on Friday night so if anyone can help on Friday night before the game (starting at 6:45), have them call Brandon at 606-669-9595.
We will setup a collection box at the home basketball games
We are planning to collect donations from the crowd at a home basketball game so we'll need the boys to walk around with buckets to collect donations.
Sorting out the toys by gender.
Help sort out toys by age group
Box and Wrap gifts
Hand out gifts at the christmas party
We don't expect that everyone will have to do everything listed above, but we would like to know that they would be willing to help out when they can. This is a very worthy cause and one that I think the boys will get a lot of reward for doing.
Brandon will be on WPBK-FM (102.9) next Wednesday morning at 7am with Jayme Phillips to talk about the toy drive and start getting the word out. So, if your son would be interested in helping out, please reply back me with his cell phone number or a number where he can be reached.
Parents and siblings of players are also welcome to help out if they want to be part of something special this Christmas!
10/28/09 - GOOSE CREEK CANDLE FUNDRAISER
The baseball team is now selling Goose Creek Candles to raise money for the upcoming Spring Break Trip next year. Each player will be required to pay $100 for the Spring Break Trip, however they can use the profilts from the candle sales to apply toward their fee. For each candle sold, we receive $10 profit, therefore each player is encouraged to sell at least 10 candles. Everything above and beyond the $100 fee will be applied toward the general expenses for the trip. We have passed out sales forms to all of the players we can think of, however if you are planning to play next year and have not received a form yet, please contact Steve Weir (502) 314-6836 or email at sweir@ups.com and he will get you a form. We would like to thank Tabitha Holbrook for organizingt his fundraiser.
All forms should be turned in by November 13 so we can get the candles back in time for Christmas.

SPORTS PHYSICALS ON THURSDAY, MAY 14
May 13 - The school has scheduled doctors to perform sports physicals at the high school Thursday, May 14 starting at 6pm. The cost for the physicals are $10 per person. The physicals are good for one year from the date of examination. This is not required for this year, but will be needed for next year. Although we do have a game on Thursday at Southwestern Pulaski, I wanted to pass along the information in case we are rained out (what are the chances, right?). They will have 7-8 doctors available to perform the examinations.
If we are fortunate enough to play, you will need to make arrangements to have the physicals done some other time. You can contact Eva Stone, who is the School Health Coordinator, to schedule an appointment and she can perform the physical for the $10 fee. You can reach her at the Shool Board Office at 365-2124 or via email at eva.stone@lincoln.kyschools.us. You can also have the physicals performed at the Medical Park in Stanford for $25. These must be completed and turned in before the start of the 2010 season.
NO FOOL'S GOLD HERE - PATRIOTS BEAT BOYLE 8-2
May 5 - The Lincoln County Patriots didn't plan on coming back to Boyle County this season, and after the way their first visit went, they probably didn't want to.
But they made another trip to Boyle on short notice Tuesday, then made the most of it by ending two losing streaks against one of their biggest rivals. Lincoln used a five-run third inning to beat the Rebels 8-2 and snap a current eight-game losing streak and a six-game losing streak in the series.
"We've been on a little bit of a skid, and it's been very, very difficult to get out of this funk that we're in, but I think we may be starting to turn it around," Lincoln coach Kalen Gibson said.
The two teams rearranged their schedules to make up a rained out game that was supposed to be played in Stanford. But Lincoln's field remained too wet for play Tuesday, so the game was moved to Boyle, where the Patriots had lost a five-inning game 12 days earlier.
"We weren't exactly happy with the rainout and coming back over here for another one, but we responded and didn't let that affect us," Lincoln pitcher Brandon Weir said.
After Lincoln's offense gave him the lead in the third, Weir shut Boyle out over the final four innings to give the Patriots their first win over the Rebels since 2006.
"This is probably the biggest win of my career," Weir said. "We always say the one game we want every year is Boyle County."
It was the Patriots' first win since April 17, and their losing streak included four district losses by a combined score of 49-19.
"Those district losses, they cut us a little bit, but we made a choice last night (at practice) that the season starts over here," Weir said.
Lincoln (9-12, 1-5 45th District) will still have the No. 4 seed in the 45th District Tournament later this month, while Boyle (15-9, 4-2) will settle for the No. 2 seed after falling into a first-place tie with Danville.
"We controlled our destiny today, and we didn't take care of business," Boyle coach David Camic said. "They just outplayed us. They outpitched us, outhustled us and outcoached us."
Lincoln scored all of its third-inning runs with two outs after an intentional walk to Johnny Robles, who had an RBI single in the first inning, as he became the first of five straight Patriots to reach base.
Garrick Whittle, who started for Boyle for the second straight day after pitching one inning in a loss to Mercer County on Monday, hit Ryne Otto with a pitch to load the bases and walked Scotty Bradford to force in the tying run.
Last Inning Highlights
Big play from Lincoln's Mullins
Camic turned to Blake Bottoms, who had thrown a no-hitter in Boyle's 11-1 win over Lincoln on April 23. But Ben Mullins greeted Bottoms with a double to left field that cleared the bases, and he scored on an error to make it 6-2.
"That was a sophomore stepping up and making a big play," Weir said of Mullins. "All through the lineup we had some great hits."
The hit parade continued in the fourth inning as Trey Edwards led off with a double and Cody Hensley followed with a single - both had with two hits - and Weir brought them both in with a sharp single up the middle.
Jacob Bodner then came on in relief of Bottoms and got six straight outs for Boyle, but the Rebels couldn't rally against Weir. They outhit Lincoln 9-8 but stranded seven runners, six of them in scoring position.
"I think Weir was just the difference today," Camic said.
Boyle had six hits in the second and third innings, scoring its two runs on a single by Brenan Short in the second and a double by Ben Carter in the third. Carter, Bodner and Kody Ross had two hits each, but Weir was able to limit their damage.
"Every game you're not going to have your best stuff, but the ability to dig down, to find you a little bit of something to get you out of jams here and there, that's the difference between big-game pitchers and just pitchers, and it was good to see that aspect of Brandon's game show up tonight," Gibson said.
Weir (4-3), who struck out six batters and walked only two in his second start since returning from a hamstring injury, benefited from error-free defense by Lincoln and particularly from two sparkling plays by Bradford at first base in the second inning.
Bradford corraled a hard grounder by Logan Tritapoe that could have gotten down the right-field line for a run-scoring double but instead became a double play, and two Boyle runners were left on base when he snared a line drive off the bat of Caleb Runyon for the third out.
