The Lufkin High School baseball team, which came within a few runs of winning the Class 5A state baseball championship this past year, will begin the 2010 season as the No. 4 team in Texas, according to a poll released this morning.
The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association has tabbed the Panthers as the fourth best team in the state to start the year. Three Houston-area teams — Bellaire, The Woodlands and Pearland — are ranked first through third. Lufkin and The Woodlands both play in the same district, District 14-5A.
Lufkin fell to El Paso Socorro, 12-7, in the state championship game last year, a day after beating Pearland, 4-2, on Luis DeJesus's walk-off home run. The Panthers finished 2009 with its first-ever 30-win season.
