No. 6 Lynn English 40, Swampscott 34

LYNN, Mass. -- Whenever or where ever Lynn English needed a pickup on Tuesday, Catherine Stinson was ready to give it to them. In a battle of Northeastern Conference division leaders, it was the sophomores guard's complete shooting range that proved the difference for the No. 6 Bulldogs . Scoring 17 points from all over her side the court, Stinson propelled host English to a 40-34 victory over Swampscott. “I told Catherine (to) keep shooting,” said English coach Fred Hogan. “She will make the big assist, she will make a great pass, and she will hit the big shot. She does not get bothered or rattled.” With the Bulldogs (13-1, 12-0) and the Big Blue (10-3, 9-2) each holding a solid lead in their divisions (Lynn in North, Swampscott in South), the win was a statement as to who was the best in the conference at the halfway point in the season. The two teams started the game slow, but a deep step-back 3-pointer by Stinson helped heat the Bulldogs up with a 7-6 lead. After missing eight behind-the-arc attempts in the first quarter, English hit four treys in the second to pull ahead. An in-motion jumper by senior Tyeisha Lewis six minutes later sent the Bulldogs into half up 18-12. “I just do a stepback then I feel it and shoot,” said Stinson. “We could score up and after that we could get back on defense. I feel (the shot) in the motion.” By attacking underneath Swampscott managed to keep in range, but were unable to offset the Bulldogs shooting. A three-of-seven foul-line ratio to open the second half hurt the low-paint focused Big Blue. Swampscott did not lead again since squandering an advantage early in the second quarter. A planted 3-pointer hit through a blocker's hand by Lewis gave English its biggest margin of the night at 34-20 with 4:30 left. “We had to make it our style of game (by) going to the hoop and making our shots,” said Hogan. “We came out (of the half) with a lot of full court man-to-man. We will have to play real (strong) man-to-man in the state tournament.” Swampscott showed life in the final minute when a drained corner trey by junior Ara Talkov brought the score to 39-34 with 19.6 seconds left. However, a blocked inbound attempt by Talkov and a swiped pass under the basket by the Big Blue did not produce points. “We are never going to stop playing and a lot of the kids made their shots (late),” said Swampscott coach Jack Hughes. “We finally made some shots, but we did not make too many overall.” Stinson is fully recovered from an ankle injury that she suffered in 51-37 win over Saugus. The sophomore flipped six assists and grappled five blocks, while teammate senior captain Taylor Newhall grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Ara Talkov led Swampscott in scoring with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Laskaris had 13 points and 10 rebounds. “(Laskaris and Talkov) are our two most experienced players and they have to come through,” said Hughes. “We tried some zone and man, but struggled offensively.”

The new-age baby boomers, neatly disguised as girls basketball players atLynn English, firmly believe the future is now.

The Bulldogs, loaded with talented underclassmen, have stormed out of the gate with a 7-0 start. Among the early-season victims were defending Northeastern Conference champion Revere as well as last year’s Division 3 state championSt. Mary’s in the opening round of the Boverini Tournament in Lynn.

“Beating St. Mary’s was huge for the girls,” Lynn English coach Fred Hogan said. “That was a game we had circled since before the start of the season. The girls really wanted it because if St. Mary’s won the tournament, they would have been able to retire the trophy (because) any team that wins it three years in a row gets to keep it.”

Paving the way for Lynn English is a trio of sophomores. Catherine Stinson leads the team in scoring (16.1 points per game) and assists (7.1 per game), while swingman Deidra Newson is averaging 13.7 points and 6.4 rebounds a game. Defensive specialist Diondra Woumn is getting it done at both ends of the floor, as evidenced by her 14 points, six rebounds and five steals a game.

Junior guard Tyeisha Lewis missed some time during the holiday to visit family out of state, but she is quickly making up for lost time, pouring in 18 points against Beverly. Junior forward Dolores Latimer is second on the team in rebounding (6.6 per game), while classmate Shannon Calnan is tallying six points a game.

The only senior in the top seven is forward Taylor Newhall. A rock in the paint, Newhall leads the Bulldogs in rebounding with a 7.4 average.

Even though Lynn English is undefeated, Hogan knows his team is far from a finished product. After defeating archrival Lynn Classical by 18 in the finals of the Boverini Tournament, the Bulldogs nearly squandered a 22-point lead against the same Rams last week, holding on to win, 55-53.

“We’re a young team and we took the foot off the gas and it almost cost us.” Hogan said. “But we’ll learn from it. We’re a young team and we’ll keep working hard and getting better every day."

2011 CITY CHAMPIONS 4TH TITLE IN 6 YEARS.
Bulldogs defeat Rams,

LYNN - The English girls made sure it would be a Bulldog sweep in the Boverini Basketball Tournament, taking care of Classical, 61-43, Wednesday at the Conigliaro Gym at St. Mary's.

The results were the same for the boys and girls up and down the line. Not only did English sweep, the Bulldogs beat Classical in both games. And the St. Mary's boys and girls also won the consolation games.

"This (winning the tournament) was important to us," said English coach Fred Hogan. "We were a little sloppy tonight, but Diondra (Woumn) stepped up and had a big game for us."

Woumn, a sophomore, whose brother, Ryan, led English to the Division 1 state final three years ago, finished up with 16 points (to go along with the 13 she had Tuesday in English's win over St. Mary's). She was named the tournament's MVP while Catherine Stinson (16 points) was the Bulldogs' other representative on the all-tournament team.

The win is English's 4th in the tournament's history, which began in 2004. The Rams won the first Two, English the next 3 and St. Mary's the previous two.

"This was a special year for us," said Hogan. "It's good to have the trophy back home."

Despite the loss, Classical coach Tom Sawyer was anything but unhappy.

"If you can believe this," he said, "this was our best game we've played this year. I'll tell you, English has a lot of good players over there, but our girls didn't back down. We played as hard as we possibly could."

English's sophomore troika of Woumn, Stinson and Deidra Newson was just too much for the Rams. They combined for 41 of English's 61 points, with Newson hitting nine.

For Classical, Monta Connolly was the Rams' representative on the all-tournament team. She scored 11 points, sharing high scoring honors with Bobbi Dee Regan. Behind them was Kristin Lauria (8).

"Kristin is going to be a good player," said Sawyer. "She's still young (a sophomore) and she'll certainly grow."

English got the early jump, running off to a 17-7 first-quarter lead before Regan and Chelsea Rogers hit back-to-back hoops to make it a six-point lead after one.

But the Bulldogs doubled up on the Rams in the second quarter (14-7) to take a 31-18 lead at the break. And while the second half was a bit more even, English still outscored the Rams 30-25 to account for the final margin of victory.

Former English star Anderson continues to excel in collegeOriginally Published on Tuesday, December 27, 2011By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item

Not every high school athlete can make the leap to playing at the college level, but Lynn's Jeanette Anderson is making it look easy.

The former English High basketball star was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week last week, adding to a long list of such honors the Caldwell College sophomore has racked up since last year.

Anderson, a 6-1 sophomore forward, was a force for English as a scorer and she has picked up where she left off at the college level. She averaged 20.5 points and 10 rebounds in two games to earn Player of the Week honors.

In the first game against N.Y.I.T., Anderson scored a career-high 32 points and hauled down 13 rebounds. She was 13-for-18 from the floor. In the second game, against Queens College, she had nine points with three steals and seven rebounds.

Anderson left English having eclipsed both the 1,000-career-point mark and the 1,000-career-rebound mark. She started for coach Fred Hogan as a freshman and her star just kept on rising.

"It's just a great thing," Hogan said. "One thing about Jeanette is she's got to be the hardest-working player I've ever had in the program. She's on pace at the college level to get 1,000 points and rebounds ... she got better every day from freshman year to senior year.".

Anderson was home for Christmas for about a week, but was scheduled to head back to New Jersey today. While she was home, she worked out with the English High girls basketball team, as did a couple of other former players, including Brianna Vaughan, Jenicia Duggins (Roxbury Community College), Diaysha Brewington (Post University), Kayla Murkison (Western Connecticut State), Miranda Hogan and Nikki Harrington. Duggins, Brewington and Murkison are all playing in college.

Anderson said her Caldwell team (7-5) got off to a slow start this season, but things are going well now.

"Now we have a six-game winning streak going," she said, adding it just took a little while for the team chemistry to come together.

Anderson said one of the differences between the high school and college game is the size and strength of the players. Like the players she battles with under the boards, Anderson has also gotten stronger since leaving high school.

Anderson currently leads her team in scoring (16.7 points per game) and in rebounding (10.8 per game).

Her numbers put her second in the CACC in field goal percentage (.553), third in rebounding and sixth in scoring. As a freshman she was the conference Rookie of the Year and the ECAC Rookie of the Year (she averaged 13.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game). She was the CACC Rookie of the Week six times last year.

Caldwell head coach Linda Cimino said several things stand out when it comes to Anderson.

"She has such great hands and great footwork," Cimino said, adding that probably the best thing about her is that she's a post player who runs the court like a guard.

"She'll get the rebound on defense and be the first one back at the offensive end," Cimino said. "It's very rare that your best player is your hardest worker and that's Jeanette."

This is actually Anderson's third year at Caldwell. She redshirted as a freshman and took care of some academic issues. Even when she wasn't playing, however, she was an important part of the team.

"She's not a captain, but she's been a team leader since day one," Cimino said.

Cimino said a big factor in Anderson's success at the college level has been the support she gets from home - specifically Coach Hogan, retired Lynn Tech principal and boys basketball coach Jim Ridley and current Tech boys basketball coach Marvin Avery. All three helped Anderson with her game while she was at English and they continue to keep close tabs on her at college.

"Those guys are a huge part of why she's successful," Cimino said ""They care about her as an athlete and as a student. That's uncommon at this level. I think she really appreciates that support."

Anderson has played a couple of games against Northeast-10 teams this season, including Stonehill College (home of St. Mary's star player Tori Faieta) and Assumption College. She's traveled to Connecticut in January to play Post College and former teammate Brewington.

Anderson said even though she's in New Jersey, she still has some local fans (her mother and uncle) at many of her games.

"I'm really enjoying it (college and playing basketball)," Anderson said. "It's been a great opportunity for me."

Hogan said it was great to have his former players come back and practice with the team last week.

"The young girls are getting to see some big-time college players," he said.
