5 Generals Accept Baseball Scholarships
The MacArthur Generals baseball program is proud to announce that 5 senior players have taken advantage of the NCAA early signing period to accept baseball scholarships: Pitchers Frankie Vanderka and Josh Barry accepted scholarships to Division I Stony Brook University; shortstop Nick McQuail has accepted a scholarship to Division I Marist College; and pitcher Andrew Mege and centerfielder Mike Scro accepted scholarships to Division II Queens College. Each of these young men was recruited heavily by both local and out-of-state schools, and in November, they were permitted by the NCAA to sign a National Letter of Intent, declaring the school of their choice. The students have worked very hard, both on the baseball field and in the classroom, to earn the opportunity to play college baseball. They are outstanding students whose academic achievements opened doors for them to the playing fields of fine colleges.
The Mac Arthur baseball coaching staff diligently strives to ensure that its players are placed in colleges and universities that suit them athletically and academically. Currently, 17 MacArthur baseball alumni are playing in college, with scholarship money totaling close to $200,000 per year. In fact, with the addition of players who will receive scholarship money for next year, Mac Arthur baseball alumni will be saving over $1,000,000 in tuition over the course of a 4 year college career! Frankie, Josh, Nick, Andrew, and Mike are grateful to their parents, teachers, and coaches for helping them along the way. Several other MacArthur senior baseball players are still being recruited by colleges, but have yet to decide on their choices.
1ST Alumni Day a Huge Success!
On October 24th the MacArthur baseball program held its first annual Alumni Day. Over 50 former players participated in some aspect of the day's activities. First up was a Home Run Derby, with dozens of former players showing off their power. Jeff Tyler, 1994 Diamond Award winner as Nassau County's best player, ended up edging out his former teammate Vin Causeman, the Most Valuable Player of the 1994 New York State Championships, and Brent Savin, All County award winner in 2000 and 2001. This was followed by softball games pitting teams comprised of graduates from different years against each other. To cap off a great day, the former Generals met at a local restaurant for a catered lunch. All of the credit for this great day goes to current MacArthur High School Varsity Assistant Coach Vin Causeman. Coach Causeman contacted well over 100 former players, and has started a Facebook page for MacArthur Baseball Alumni. If you are an alumni and want to join our contact list, please email Coach Causeman at VCauseman@levittownschools.com. Coaches Costello and Causeman want to make this day an annual event, including as many former players as possible. MacArthur High School enjoys one of the richest baseball traditions of any high school in the state, and we want to continue to honor those players who built this successful program.

Two MacArthur Baseball Players Named to All-State
In 1997, the New York State Sportswriters began to honor New York’s high school baseball players by announcing an All-State team. Since then, several MacArthur players have earned this prestigious honor – Bill Hoffman, Rich McGuire, Justin Anderson, Jason McCorry, Chris Sipp, Dan Horvat, Joe Culen, Steve McQuail, and Tyler Savin.
For the 2009 season, two MacArthur players joined this elite company. Frankie Vanderka and John Krause were both named All-State, joining Chris Sipp and Dan Horvat as the only pair of teammates to be named in the same year. Frankie pitched and played left field for the Generals, leading MacArthur in most offensive categories and pitching very well. John pitched and also served as designated hitter, winning 9 games without a loss as MacArthur was the only team on Long Island to finish the regular season undefeated. John is now pitching for Hofstra on a baseball scholarship, and Frankie is back for the Generals for his senior season.
IN MEMORY OF RICK BAILEY
The Generals baseball program has lost one of their alumni, Rick Bailey (2004). Rick was tragically taken at the young age of 22. Rick was a very talented baseball player for the Generals during his four years of high school. He was an excellent teammate and a pleasure to coach. Rick was responsible for one of the most memorable moments in MacArthur history. During the 2003 playoffs versus Division, Rick delivered a grand slam homerun down the left field line that led the Generals to a 4-1 victory. Rick will be missed tremendously and the MacArthur coaching staff and players offer their sympathy and condolences to the Bailey family.
