Bengals Fall to Rival Brigade 20-13
This rivalry, now going on its 3rd season, was quite possibly, the front runner for "Game of the Week". The Bengals offense started, as usual, with bigs plays resulting in a rapid score early in the 1st quarter as WR Will Brown added to his league leading 3TD reception, with a 55yd pass from Veteran QB Doc Wyche. The 1st quarter also saw the Bengals defense playing at high volume, not even allowing a first down. But from the 2nd quarter on, the Bengals struggled to make anything happen in their favor. A long drive ended with a short pass rumbling 25yds thru missed flags and into the endzone for the Brigades for score. After a deep pass was picked off, Brigade WR Chris Harrell pulled down a long pass, and a "Holding by Last Man" call, resulted in the Brigades 2nd touchdown in 2 drives. But the half didn't end until after the play of the game. WR Duane Taylor "climbed the ladder" to snatch a 50yd hail mary TD pass from Wyche to take the lead going into halftime. The 2nd half held more of the same drama. After a late Brigade TD to take back the lead, the Bengals were left less than a minute to attempt to mount a game winning comeback. Starting from their own 15yd line, Wyche, who is leading the league with 6 TD passes, began picking the Brigade defense apart, hitting receivers Craig Davis, Nick Nocar, and Tony Hammonds. After a methodical drive downfield, Doc Wyche took a game final shot towards the endzone, but was just out of reach of Davis. sealing a hard fought victory for the Brigade.
This Week the Bengals(1-1) face former champs Baltimore Scorpions(2-0). The Scorps haven't allowed a score yet this season, but that may change after this meeting. The Bengals Defense haven't been themselves, giving up 32 points in their first 2 games of the season. They'll have to show up big this week, if they look to claim victory a very capable Scorps offense.
Bengals Begin Spring '09 With a Win
In the Spring '09 opener the Maryland Bengals faced a first year team in the Baltimore Nightmare, but this contest was a true 'Tale of Two Halves'.
The first quarter looked promising, as the Bengals defense came out and stop the Nightmare offense early, setting up great field position for Veteran QB Doc Wyche and the 'High Powered' Bengals offense. Wyche hit 2nd yr WR Tony 'Flash' Hammonds for a quick score, but it seemed as if the Bengals took the rest of the half off. The Next drive ended with an INT and the Bengals couldn't find a way to stop the Nightmare from scoring on two consecutive drives, one being a 40yd TD pass to end the half. The 2nd half told a different story. Defensively, the Bengals found it's nitch. The D-line man-handled the Nightmare Offense, and D-line standouts Julius Carey and Mike Johnson collected 2 sacks each while pressure assisted in newly acquired CB, Banard Burns, grabbing his first INT of the season. Offensively, the Bengals were able to find the endzone 3 times off the arm of Wyche. WR Craig 'Diddy' Davis pulled in 5 catches and a TD, while WR Will 'Speedy' Brown caught 2 passes, both going for scores, one a 95yd bomb to seal a 25-12 victory for the Bengals.
This Week the Maryland Bengals (1-0) will face the Baltimore Brigade (1-0) and former Bengals WR Chris Harrell, who has now become their primary target. The Bengals can't come out flat and play the Brigade the same way they did the Nightmare (0-1). The changes to their offense could mean they'll take full advantage of any miscues, so the pressure is going to fall directly on the defense of the Bengals in this game.
