Congratulations Mercy Marlins 2009 State Champs!
November 21, 2009

Mercy swimmers triumphed over close rival Holland at the Division 2 State Meet this weekend, winning their third consecutive State Title with 282 points, just ahead of Holland’s 278 points.

The Holland team provided tough competition, with overall wins in 6 events and setting two new Division 2 records. However it was the depth of the Mercy team, with multiple swimmers in many of the championship heats who tallied the additional points for the win.

The 200 Free Relay team of Taylor Steffl, Nikki Barczak, Olivia Samoray and Sato Kakihara won their event, the only Mercy first place in the meet.

The most dramatic event was the final event of the meet, the 400 Free Relay. Holland was the heavy favorite having set a new Division 2 record in the prelims on Friday. Mercy needed at least third place to win the meet, and was seeded fifth based on the Friday results. The team of Olivia Samoray, Maria Bargardi, Emily Reamer, Nikki Barczak eked out 2nd place, just eight one-hundredths of a second ahead of Birmingham Seaholm, enabling the Marlins to clasp their third straight state championship.

Congratulations to seniors Lauren Duda, Katie Patterson, and captains Kelly Karpus, Emily Reamer, and Anna Schena on a great undefeated season and good luck in your future endeavors.

Marlins Win Fifth Straight Oakland County Championship
October 5, 2009 The Mercy Marlins won the Oakland County meet on Saturday for the fifth consecutive year finishing with 335 points versus 245 for second place Birmingham Seaholm.

The Marlins won two events in the meet. Junior Nikki Barczak won the 100 freestlye event in 53.33, and the 400 Free Relay team of Sophomores Olivia Samoray and Sato Kakihara, and Juniors Maria Bargardi and Nikki Barczak completed in 3:38.02.

As with last year, it was the depth of the team placing enough swimmers in multiple events that earned their high point total.

The team will next face Bishop Foley High School this Wednesday at the Warren Cousino High School Pool starting at 7:00 pm.

MARLINS WIN DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Division II Results November 23, 2008 The Mercy Marlins won the Division 2 State Championship for a second straight year this Saturday at Holland, Michigan. The Marlins had a great day in the preliminary heats on Friday with all swimmers putting in great efforts to improve their times putting the Marlins in position for a run at the state championship in the finals on Saturday.

The Marlins showed up focused on Saturday and the results were nothing short of outstanding as they scored 414 points to 302 points for runner-up Holland. It was a real team effort with the Mercy depth scoring multiple swimmers in almost every event which resulted in the wide margin of victory. First place trophies were won by Carley Sevald (Diving), Maria Bagardi (200 IM) and the 200 Free Relay team of Megan Gegesky, Taylor Steffl, Nikki Barczak, and Sato Kakihara. Numerous other top finishes were achieved by many swimmers (see attached finals sheet for timing details).

The Mercy Swim and Dive team should be commended on winning their second straight State Championship and having a great year that was fun for swimmers, divers, coaches, and parents. A special thanks goes out to Shannon Dunworth and Jennifer Blitz for the outstanding coaching job this year.

In closing, a special thanks goes out to our Senior Class:

Kathryn Carey, Chandler Foster, Eileen Frenendall, Megan Gegesky, Danielle Harteau, Kaitlyn Jefferson, Natasha Mason, Alexa Milewski, Mo Nicholson, Carley Sevald, Lauren Smith, Gillian Staudt, Alex Swies, and Anna Vandecaveye.

The atmosphere at the Pioneer meet was "electrifying" with over 300 excited fans packing the pool to watch the Marlins swim Pioneer who had not lost a dual meet in over 8 years. The Marlins won the meet 111-75 by showing strong depth (most often a 2-3-4 finish) in events Pioneer won, packing the relays by winning 2 events and always grabbing third place, and winning the distance events. It was truly a great team effort that won the meet with all swimmers and divers contributing to the win.

The Marlins will be off this week with the next meet at Grosse Pointe North High School on Tuesday, October 28.
