    Attention all baseball players:

Do you know what the consensus No. 1 question is for Major League Baseball and college scouts when they call a prospect's high school coach?

    GRADES

They want to know what your grades are in school, and they are keenly interested in your ACT or SAT test scores from your college entrance exams. Why? There are several reasons, scouts tell me, including one or two that might surprise you. I've enjoyed the honor of working with more than 20 pro and college scouts this week at the Connie Mack World Series.

Being a volunteer helping them means that most of the conversations I have at the stadium are off the record and with my civic citizen hat on, not my editor's cap. But I'm also an assistant coach for the varsity baseball team at Piedra Vista High School, and I have close ties and go to church with kids I much admire from the Farmington High program. Throw in a bit of summer league coaching with players from both schools and others in our area, and I was extremely interested in how to share with these kids what the scouts say about school. Several agreed to talk at will about that particular subject. Here's some of what they said ...

*** First and foremost, they are curious about a player's character. Hearing about your grades can tell them something about that. "If he's making a steady 3.0 now but he was a 2.4 kind of student, that means he's overachieving," the scout from Louisiana State University told me. "But if he is making a 2.4, and he was a 3.0 or better, that means he's underachieving."

LSU, by the way, is among the more prominent Division I baseball programs in the country. Being an Auburn alum from the same athletic conference as LSU, I know first hand from watching their program for many years that they have a pretty good selection of players interested in them to choose from. The head coach at LSU came from Notre Dame, which is another school that considers grades of special importance before they sign a player to a baseball scholarship.

Before moving back to Farmington in 2006, I spent much time with Division I Coach Jim Case at Jacksonville State University and formerly of Mississippi State. Prior to him, Hall of Famer Rudy Abbott, a 1,000-game winner and twice a World Series winner on the collegiate Division II level before moving to D-I, invited me to help coach high school, college and youth players in a round of coaching clinics held in the South. From them, I learned to put it this way to the players I counsel: If a college coach narrows his list to 12 equally talented players for only two scholarship spots, then simply put, it comes down to who has the best work ethic. Grades and a record of extracurricular activities can provide a lot of insight.

Most colleges and universities, at least the good ones, do not want to waste a partial scholarship on someone they suspect might quit or fail to academically qualify. Bottom line: Work hard, stay active and make good grades. A pattern of that tells a scout you're a hard worker, and they like that.

*** The pro scouts tend to believe all the aforementioned things about grades in school, too, but they have a much bigger reason to pay attention.

The Connie Mack World Series organizers, such as those at most other prominent baseball tournaments that provide fertile recruiting grounds for scouts, provide a so-called "scouting roster" to the scouts that includes statistics and personal data on every player participating in the tournament. Right at the top and on the far left side among the first category topics is the player's ACT/SAT score. If a hot-shot player coming out of high school has a solid ACT or SAT score, then that means big-name college programs are going to be interested, if he is talented enough on the field. If that player is talented enough on the field for a good college program to be interested in him, then chances are good that the professional scouts are, too.

Therefore, a good player may get two very interesting offers. One, from a pro team that decides to draft him from among hundreds drafted in pro baseball each year, or two, from a college scholarship offer that will help pay for an education and certainly a fun college experience highly valued by many kids. So what does having two options mean to the pros and the players? Money.

A hot prospect with bad grades has less of an option. A college may not think he's got the grades to cut it. If so, and the player's choice is fairly simple to go pro, then that means the player has much less bargaining power when that first contract is signed. Sometimes, that can mean the difference between a few thousand dollars and a few million. However, a hot prospect with good grades can use it when negotiating with pro teams. Doesn't like the contract offer? Fine. He can take the scholarship, have fun at school and work on bringing up his skill level for what he hopes will be a higher draft spot the next time he enters the draft. The risk is injury or poor performance in college, but the gains include a chance for a degree and the fun of college. If the pro team really likes him, they up the offer. If the kid has bad grades and no scholarship offers, then he has less of a choice. Thus, good grades more than often means better money, even in professional baseball when high school is an afterthought.

*** Farmington is fortunate to be so high on the list of so many scouts interested in coming here, and that is a decades-old success story for the Connie Mack World Series.

The scouts come from all the best in big-name baseball organizations, such as the Braves, the Cardinals, the Yankees, the Twins, the Red Sox and on and on in Major League Baseball. We welcome them and appreciate their interest in what we enjoy as simply great baseball.

Four Corners fans are well aware by now that some of the talent they watch in this world series will no doubt join many others playing here before them in making it to the pros.

Many volunteers investing hundreds of hours in hospitality and hard work make the series happen. And, interestingly enough, it seems that many good teachers behind the scenes have just as big a role in who goes pro and when. So, the next time you pick a favorite player to watch climb the ranks, consider adding to the stats checklist you're keeping. Home runs, hits, RBIs and, yes, grades. The hottest prospects will have them all.

18U Frank Bradham - Class of 2010 - TOP 125 High School Players
The entire organization and it's immediate family would like to congratulate 18U RHP Frankie Bradham for being ranked in the top 125 high school baseball players. Prospectwire.com released their Pre-Season Florida State Rankings on Friday and ranked F. Bradham 81st overall and 23rd as pitcher.

Frankie Bradham made his presence known when he was 12 years old and pitching for the Pirates in a local tournament "Cane Christmas Tournament". It was a cold saturday night with temp. in the 50's and F.Bradham was the Pirates starting pitcher and was pitching against the Rene Arocha Baseball Academy and dueling against current Columbus High School RHP Michael Gonzalez. I remember that night very well, both pitchers were dealing and were throwing their fastballs without fear stated head coach Vaca. The Pirates offense were able to get 2 runs for Frankie and that was all he needed to shut down a strong Arocha team. This is when Frankie showed he had big league stuff and that he was going to be special.

Frankie who attends Monsignor Edward Pace High School and is entering his junior year, has been working hard with Pace Pitching Coach Chuck Lyman and great things are expected from him his Jr. and Sr. year. He has always done great in the summer travel baseball circuit but this Summer he was very special, He had great games in Perfect Game, at Um and FIU and attracted a lot of attention from college scouts. After speaking with a local D1 school the coach stated that Frankie was a legitimate Division 1 College Prospect a 6'2" RHP with an 85-86 MPH fastball that doesn't lose steam even after 6 innings of work. He's very projectable and will get stronger and will only continue to get better.

Congratulations Frankie, we wish you the best and we look forward to seeing you pitch at the next level.

    18U John Caballero makes 2008 First Team All-Dade & 2nd Team All-State
The Miami Lakes Pirates would like to congratulate 18U RHP Johnny Caballero for his accomplishments throughout his baseball career and for earning 2008 Dade County All-Dade First Team Honors and making the 2nd Team Florida State Team.

Johnny Caballero a 3 year verteran with the Pirates has been the "general" of the pitching staff for this organization and has been the guy you wanted on the mound when the game was on the line. "If I had to choose anyone without any doubt in my mind it would be Johnny any day of the week and twice on Sunday's" stated Coach Harold.

Johnny Caballero a 6'3" RHP from Dade Christian High School has great stuff on the mound, what makes him so speacial is that he has great movement on all his pitches, his 4 seem fastball has so much movement that it's very effective. But his ability to pitch goes beyond having good movement on his fastball, he knows how to pitch and has been taught well. Johnny uses his head and is always trying to out think the hitter. He's not only plays the game of baseball like he's supposed to but he's also a student of the game and isn't afraid to learn everyday.

On behalf of the Pirates Organization we would like to congratulate Johnny Caballero and would like to wish him all the best during his senior year and we look forward to watching him pitch at the next level of baseball. Great Job Johhny we're really proud of you kid!!!

18U Prospects get Private College Workout
The Miami Lakes Pirates Organization has been working hard to establish a great summer for their 18U Prospect Team, these boys are very close to graduation and for some closer than what we think. Getting them ready and having them play in front of as many college scouts is what is important for this organization and helping the players get scholarships and further their education.

We're very excited to announce that the Pirates organization has teamed up with Prospectwire.com and has been able to secure a private player workout for the 18U Prospect Team. Matt Bomeisl - Director of Prospectwire was happy to see what The Pirates Organization is doing with it's players and was very pleased to work with The Pirates.

The players we have are very special to this organization and we will do everything in our power to provide them with every opportunity to display their talents and become college athletes. Their will be many college scouts in attendance and having that opportunity to display their talent in a private workout is far better than having to be part of a 300-400 field of players.

16U Future Prospects to be advised by Tom Kovic
The Pirates Organization has been hard at work with establishing a foundation for our players and hard at work assisting the 18U Prospect Team with College placement and recruitment process. Now the organization will be focusing and working hard to educate the young 16U Future Prospect Team with the correct way to prepare themselves throughout their early years in high school. They will be advised on the importance of maintaining a proper GPA and how to prepare themselves for college.

The parents will also be educated as well on how to closely follow their children's education and how to properly plan for college financially, and prepare for the college athletic recruitment process. There is so much for everyone to learn and so much to understand but we feel that without a doubt together with Tom Kovic and baseballclick.com our players and parents will ready for the future.

Please keep checking back our site for further details on time and date for this event.

Pirates wish Coach Rudy Pena - (The Machine) the best......
Pirates Hitting and Catching instructor Rudy Pena goes back home, Coach Pena who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates from his native country Dominican Republic played his entire career for the Pittsburgh Pirates until he decided to retire and dedicate his time to working with some of the best high school talent in this area. He was also an assistant coach for American High School.

Coach Pena was the ML Pirates catching & hitting instructor for the last two years and he was a wonderful addition to this staff. His knowledge of the game helped some of the best players around town and made the ML Pirates a better team at the plate and behind the plate. Not having Rudy around this summer is a big loss for us...stated Head Coach Harold Vaca We will definitely miss him and without a doubt whoever comes in to fill his void will have big shoes to fill.

Coach Rudy Pena was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates this Spring to become their hitting instructor in the minor league system. It was just a matter of time before his talent for coaching would be recognized and we are very happy for him and although he wont be wearing a Miami Lakes Pirates jersey, he will still be a PIRATE!

On behalf of the entire Pirates Organization we wish Coach Rudy the best of luck with his new job and we look forward to seeing him in the Fall.

    Dale Machine..........

Former #1 Draftee - Ben Grzybek becomes Pirates Pitching Coach
The Pirates have yet added a former Hialeah High School standout to their Summer Coaching Roster. Pitching Coach Ben Grzybek graduated from Hialeah in 1976 and was a local standout and being the ace of the Hialeah High Staff and one of the premier pitchers in the county. After his Senior year Coach Grzybek entered the Amateur Draft and was a 1st Round Draft Choice by The Kansas City Royal.

Coach Grzybek brings a lot of knowledge to the pitching staff for The Pirates Organization. He has already begun doing wonderful things with our young 16U Prospect Team, we have 3 lefties over 6' tall that are blossoming under the guidance of Coach Grzybek. The way our young pitchers have come along makes me a believer in what Coach Grzybek brings to the table...stated 16U Head Coach Eddie Vaca.

We welcome Coach Ben Grzybek and we are definitely looking forward to him working with the entire organization pitching staff. Welcome Ben to the Pirates Baseball Family.

Celebrating Five Years of Pirates Baseball !!!
    February 13, 2008
The Pirates Organization is proud and very excited about celebrating our Five Year Anniversary and we felt the pictures would speak for themselves about our program. We hope you enjoy them, we have a few more to add, just keep checking back.

Thank you parents and players for making the last five years of the organization, the best ever!!!

Young Pirates place 2nd in 18U Woodbat Tournament
2007 18U CABA Wood bat Tournament - 2nd Place Finish
The young Pirates entered this 18U Wood bat Tournament with nothing but looking for a great time and great competition for these young kids. Honestly we did invite a couple of older boys to play in this tournament well just because of the age difference but due to unforeseen circumstances we only had two older pitchers play with us.

The boys played well and did not back up from anyone. They defeated American Legion - Post 142  (4-2), Palmetto High School (9-8), American Legion - Post 136 (5-2) and only losing in bracket play to the first seed Amercian Legion - Post 133 (3-2). The team the young Pirates would've faced in the championship game but rain would not allow us to avenge our only loss.

The pitching staff was great with young guns...Andres Perez-Lobo, Johnny Caballero, Frank Bradham, William Perez, Edgar Varas, and older boys Carlos Moreno and Bryan R. The hitting was great not full of our usual long ball but we hit the ball and played defensively we were great.

I'm proud of these boys and I look forward to further wins.....

Pirates win 2007 - 15U RBI Woodbat Tournament
The Miami Lakes Pirates earn their first tittle of the summer by winning the 2007 RBI - Woodbat Tournament. It was a great experience for us as we begin to hit with wood bats this summer. The pitching was excellent and without a doubt our hitting was awesome, with only one wood bat being broken (Hanser LOL)...

The defense was great and without a doubt this team played great baseball this week...Coach Pastor Sanchez did a great job of leading this team to winning this tournament and in the league as well were the team has only one loss this season.

    Great Job Boys.....

12U Pirates take 2nd Place in the 2006 Josh Beckett/Florida Marlins Youth Tournament
June 24, 2006 As the afternoon fell this past Thursday, I couldn't help but notice that about 15 years ago I once played on those very same fields as a youth but this time it's different....I'm watching, and not only watching but watching a young group become a team.

The 2006 Josh Beckett/Marlins Youth Tournament was a great experience for these boys, in the short time that they have been together I can honestly say that they look good....still young and inexperienced but without a doubt have a bright future.

The Pirates posted a 2-1 record in pool play -- only losing to Kendall Hammocks in pool play and eventually in the Championship game. The Hammocks team had some good pitching, they pitched 2 young boys with blazing heat and powered their way to the win.

The team overall looked good, they had chemistry, swagger, and above all "teamwork" mentality.

The pitching looked good and very promising...Daniel, Jeff are two lefties that can dominate anyone with good stuff...and lets not forget the 3rd lefty in training Eddie.

Tony, David, Andrae, Dennis (Closer) and company are some of the best right hand pitchers you can find. All throw hard and show a lot of promise. The hitting shows lots of promise, with Dennis, David, Andrae, Daniel, Marky and Maurice this team can become very deadly. Once they mature into top travel baseball this line-up will be giving nightmares to a lot of people.

The young Pirates made it to the Championship Game....and fought the Kendall Hammocks team hard but lost 5-0 on 2 earned runs.

Keep checking back because this young team is going to make some noise!!!!!

"Talent Wins Games but Teamwork Wins Championships" you're on the right track!
