Welcome to the home of the
Mobley Wrestling
|
Battle Creek, MI. - A early season event brought wrestlers from Ill., Ind., Wisc., Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, Penn., Mass., and many other states to the Kellogg Arena for the 2009 Border Wars National Championships.
Each wrestler had to qualify at various tournaments throughout the year. Zack qualified by placing first at the 2008 Winter Nationals.
In an extremly tough tournament that saw many National and State champs fall or not even place, Zack got some great exposure to the next level. Being on the younger end of the age bracket, hand not yet having dropped his football weight he found several things that came back to him quickly and several more that need to be worked on.

In his first open tournament Luke got off to a slow start, not using his moves made things difficult. By the second round the light went on and he was off and running. 3rd round was by far and away the most telling. it saw him tossed to his back in a head & arm but refusing to lose he fought for most of the first period just to stay off his back. For the remainder of the match, when ever the opponent attempted the H&A luke changed levels and shot scoring several takedowns and nearfall. It was later learned that his opponent placed 4th @ last years State tournament.

Regional Champ!!
Portage, MI. - The Southwest Regionals brought nearly 800 kids from around Southwest Michigan to try for one of the 4 tickets available per weight class to this years state finals. Zack wrestled sick for most of the morning but managed to still claim wins in matches that were not as close as the score might indicate. The 2 points given up were a cut and locked hands call. His neutral position again was frustrating his opponents. He continously attacked and pushed the pace through most of the match.

Zack claims 2nd Galesburg title!
Galesburg, MI. - A sunny yet cold and windy day brought nearly 500 wrestlers to the second Galesburg hosted MYWAY tournament.
Zack was anxious and excited approaching the day. With 7 opponents in his bracket, he needed to win the first two to get a match up with the defending State champion, who had handed Zack his only regional loss a month earlier. This time Zack was able to return the favor, defeating Tyler Hunt 3-1 and giving Tyler his only MYWAY loss of the season. It was a great match with Zack getting the early takedown and Tyler quickly getting the escape, in the third period Tyler chose top and Zack recorded the escape.

Again this week he did not allow an offense point and seemed to get better as the day went along. His neutral position work seems to be paying off as it thourghly frustrates his opponents. He also is continously attacking and pushing the pace of the match which we hope will work in his favor as the season continues.

Zack attends Chertow Weekend Warrior camp
November 11, 2006
Coldwater, MI. - Zack attended Ken Chertow's weekend warrior camp this past weekend. The Weekend Warrior Camp is a unique 3 day weekend camp that was an awesome opportunity for zack to receive the personalized instruction, intense training, and timely motivation for the upcoming season.
The Camp consisted of 4 primary elements:
Technique Instruction – In a wide variety of important areas.
Intense Drilling – To perfect set–ups, timing and combinations.
Live Wrestling
Sports Science – Discussions covering mental preparation, nutrition, strength training, goal setting, earning a college scholarship and more.
SYSTEMATIC APPROACH
Ken has been an avid student of the sport since he was fourteen years old and made a commitment to becoming a State Champion. Since then he has trained year-round, experimenting with different techniques while drilling, wrestling, and coaching young wrestlers. While coaching at Penn State and Ohio State, he has had the privilege of working with some of the finest coaches and wrestlers in the nation. He has had gone to training camps at the Olympic Training Center regularly since 1984. At these camps he trained with some of the best wrestlers in the world, expanding and polishing his repertoire daily. He also regularly analyze videotape of State, NCAA, and Olympic Championships. He knows and understands what it takes to become a Champion and am eager to share it.
Ken has carefully designed the entire technique curriculum so that everything you learn will be presented in an organized, systematic fashion. Zack is learning a system of wrestling—the same system that has made ken and many other top wrestlers successful.

Mobley's attend #1Minnesota vs. #3 Michigan dual
February 17, 2006
Pictured: #1 Dustin Schlatter (Minn.) dec. #4 Eric Tannenbaum, 6-0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed at least a share of its third straight Big Ten Conference dual-meet crown with a 19-15 upset of top-ranked Minnesota on Friday (Feb. 17) in front of a capacity 1,850 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.
Sophomore/freshman Casey White (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) turned the Gophers' Mitch Kuhlman in the closing seconds of the 197-pound bout to secure a 7-2 decision and clinch the Wolverine victory with one match still remaining. After a scoreless first period and offsetting reversals in the second, White held just a narrow one-point advantage entering the final frame with Kulhman starting on bottom. White kept the Gopher on the mat for the two full minutes and used a high-leg turk to hold Kulhman in a near-fall situation for the final minute of regulation.
With each team claiming five individual bouts, bonus points played a pivotal role in the contest as Michigan's fifth-year senior captain Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) and junior/sophomore Josh Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) picked up extra points at 165 and 141 pounds, respectively.
Ryan Churella, ranked No. 1 nationally by NWCA/InterMat, earned a six-point victory over ninth-ranked Matt Nagel when the Gopher wrestler was disqualified after receiving his fifth stalling call with just 13 seconds remaining in the third period. Churella scored on a quick high-crotch early in the second frame and added a reversal in the third to get on top and build up riding-time advantage. Churella could not get much else accomplished as Nagel simply lay flat on the mat to start picking up stalling calls -- one in each of the first two periods and three in the third. The victory gave the Wolverines the lead for good in the dual meet and kept Churella undefeated at 21-0 on the season.
Josh Churella, ranked fourth at 141 pounds, earned a dominant 13-5 major decision against Tyler Safratowich to pick up an extra team point early in the dual. Churella scored five takedowns in the match, most notably a double leg with only 30 seconds remaining to secure the major after riding time. With the win, Churella extended his winning streak to 11 straight matches.
Freshman Michael Watts (Riverton, Utah/Riverton HS) got the momentum rolling early for the Wolverines with a 9-6 decision over Travis Lang at the opening weight of 125 pounds. Watts struck first with a quick double leg just 20 seconds into the bout, but the Gopher stole away the lead with an escape and takedown at the end of the period. Watts again struck quickly in the second, earning a fast escape and using a cement mixer to get the go-ahead takedown. The Wolverine added two more in the final frame to claim the victory and give U-M the initial lead in the dual.
Senior/junior Nick Roy (Wall, N.J./Wall HS) rounded out the Wolverines' individual victors with a close 3-2 decision against 13th-ranked Gabriel Dretsch at 174 pounds. After Dretsch knotted the score at one point apiece early in the third, Roy, ranked 10th, shot in on a single leg late in the frame, finishing with a double to secure the deciding takedown.
All five of Minnesota's victories came by decision, with two going into extra time and one requiring riding time to provide the difference. Third-ranked Mack Reiter fought through several scramble situations to pull out a 13-6 win over senior/junior Mark Moos (Lorain, Ohio/St. Edward HS) at 133 pounds and even the score after two bouts. Moos, ranked 11th, led early in the middle frame after he earned a quick reversal out of a flurry, but Reiter came back with a strong third period, catching Moos in another flurry for a reversal and two back points. After a late takedown by the Gopher, Moos scored an escape at the buzzer to prevent the major.
Minnesota earned back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 pounds to claim a two-point edge heading into the halftime break. Top-ranked Dustin Schlatter used takedowns in the second and third periods to post a 6-0 win against fourth-ranked junior/sophomore Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS) at 149. Schlatter countered a Wolverine shot midway through the middle frame to drop to the legs and convert for the first offensive points and added his second on a spinaround at the final buzzer.
Fourth-ranked C.P. Schlatter needed the round of tiebreakers to break a deadlocked score at 157 pounds and earn a 2-1 decision against 11th-ranked sophomore/freshman Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS). Each wrestler earned his escape point through seven minutes, but with Luke unable to escape in the first 30-second tiebreaker, Schlatter collected the win after getting away early in the second abbreviated frame.
Sophomore/freshman Tyrel Todd (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS) pushed ninth-ranked Roger Kish to overtime, but the Gopher wrestler earned a quick single-leg takedown in the extra frame to claim a 6-4 decision. Todd, ranked 18th, rallied from an early deficit in the match to steal away the advantage, scoring on a double leg off a restart late in the second, but Kish earned his escape point in the third to set up the sudden victory.
Top-ranked Cole Konrad needed riding time to decide his bout against fifth-year senior Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) in the final bout of the evening. With both wrestlers playing it cautious through seven minutes, Konrad was able to hold the No. 3-ranked Wolverine down for the entire second period to accumulate 2:00 in riding time. The Gopher chose neutral in the third, and neither was able to score again as Konrad picked up a 1-0 decision to end Wagner's winning streak at 21 matches.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular-season portion of their 2005-06 schedule against No. 17 Indiana on Sunday (Feb. 19) in a 2 p.m. dual at Cliff Keen Arena.

Michigan State University Tournament Runner-up
January 9, 2006
East Lansing, MI. - With over 960 wrestlers coming from all over Michigan and neighboring states, the Spartan Country Tournament was a great way to open the 2006 Folkstyle season.
Zack, wrestling in the 7-8 year old division at 64 lbs, had 15 solid competitors, which is as we expected.
In this 16 man bracket zack recieved the first round bye, followed by a second round match up with Caleb Knauf from the Blackhawks wrestling club, the winner of his first round match-up. Zack was able to secure a early first period pin.
During the third round Zack dropped a match to Brenden McRill of Kearsly. Brenden is the 2005 Border Wars National Champion.
Consolation Rounds - Finding himself in the wrestle backs, Zack took a 7-0 decision over Tristen Schultz of Eaton rapids and recorded a fall over Jared Sironew (2005 MYWAY State Champion) in the Consolation Finals
True Second - In the battle for true second Zack faced Nathan Schutt from the Motor City Wrestling Club ( Motor City WC ). Nathan, a 2005 MYWAY State Champion, BorderWars National Champion, AAU Ironman Champion, and AAU World Folkstlye Champion gave Zack a good match before Zack recorded the takedown. Later in the first period Zack would follow this up with 3 nearfall points. In the second period Nathan recorded a takedown and Zack the escape for a 6-2 Final score.
On a side note we thought it was very cool that the Michigan State University Spartan Wrestlers helped run the tournament. In particular Mindy and I were pleased to have Andy Simmons as the score keeper for the majority of Zack's matches. For those not familiar with Andy, Andy is a NCAA All-American and had a prep record of 219-0.

Zack attends Ryan Bertin clinic
Zack had the opportunity to train with Ryan Bertin, 2-time NCAA champion and 4-time NCAA All-American from the University of Michigan.
While at Michigan, Ryan was a Two-time NCAA 157-pound champion (2003, '05) ... Four-time NCAA All-American ... 2005 Big Ten Wrestler of the Year ... Ranks fifth on U-M's all-time wins list with 142-21 career mark ... Three-time NWCA All-Academic ... Three-time Academic All-Big Ten ... Two-time team captain.
Ryan took time away from his current positions at Paine/Wetzel Associates ONCOR International, a 30 year-old Chicago-based commercial real estate sales, leasing and services company and Coaching the Wildcat Wrestling Club in Evanston, IL. to conduct a clinic in SW Michigan.

Portage Freestyle Champion
April 23, 2005
Portage, MI. - Zack made quick work of his lone opponent in a limited field at the 2005 Portage Freestyle tournament held April 23rd.
A point that we often emphasize is that it's the effort and not the outcome that we are looking for. I have wrestled less skilled opponents and found myself "wrestling down". It is important to recognize that at times like these is is even more important to take advantage of the opportunity to execute sound technique.
Zack wrestled one of his best technical matches of the freestlye season. He executed a nice single-leg, driving into Cody, keeping him off balance, head on the inside, before finishing with a front trip. From the top he started to go with a gut-wrench before switching to throwing in a leg and power-half, to get back exposure. The remander of the match consisted of Zack adjusting his pinning combination before the fall was called at 1:02 of the first period.
We will be wrestling at the newly built Battle Creek Harper Creek High School on Saturday, April 30th.

Chris meets Ken Chertow
November 4, 2005
I was able to meet Ken Chertow at this years Michigan Wrestling Association clinic.
Ken has found success at all levels of compitition, both as a competitor and a coach. After winning 2 State championships and Outstanding wrestler awards in West Virginia, Ken culminated his prep career by winning Junior Nationals in both freestyle and greco, and the Junior World Championships.
While studying and training at Penn State, Ken was a 3x NCAA All- American, World Espoir Champion, Pan American Champion and 1988 U.S. Olympian.
Ken also excelled in the classroom as he became a 3x Academic All-American graduating with a 3.6 G.P.A.
Ken also coached at Ohio State and Penn State. During his 3 years at OSU, he helped build the buckeyes into a national powerhouse. In 1992 he joined the PSU coaching staff and they won the National Dual Meet Championships and were 2nd in the NCAA championships.
Overall, I loved his intensity and likeable personality. I would highly recommmend any of his training camps or clinics and am looking forward to attending future clinincs/camps.
Thanks Ken!
-Chris
