Offense: Phillip Butler-RB-North Hagerstown (Had 39 carries for 329 yards and 5 TDs in 41-28 victory over Catoctin. The 329 rushing yards are fourth best in MVAL history for a single game. Butler broke the North Hagerstown single season record for overall TDs and rushing TDs in Friday's victory)

Defense: Dylan Hunt-LB-Brunswick (Had 16 tackles, 1 for loss and 2 caused fumbles in loss to Boonsboro)

WEEK #9
Offense: Joey Conrad-QB-Brunswick (In his first start Joey was 26-35-1 for 317 yards and 2 TD's. Threw two 4th quarter TD passes to lead Brunswick to a come from behind win over South Hagerstown. Conrad also rushed 20 times for 74 yards and 1 TD and 1 2-point conversion. For the game he accounted for 391 yards of total offense and 3 TD's)

Defense: Alex Courtney-LB-North Hagerstown (Had 20 total tackles (10 solo, 10 assisted) and 2 TFL's in the Hubs 28-21 OT victory over undefeated Boonsboro)

WEEK #10
Offense: Isiaha Smith-RB-South Hagerstown (Had 15 Rushing Attempts for 221 yards and 3 Touchdowns in victory over North Hagerstown)

Defense: J.R. Lowery-Boonsboro (Had 18 total tackles (9 Unassisted Tackles / 9 Assisted Tackles), 1 Tackle for Loss for -2 yards in win over Smithsburg)

Denzel Helms-South Hagerstown (Had 8 Tackles (6 solo, 2 Assisted), 1 sack, 1 TFL, 2 Fumble Recoveries in victory over North Hagerstown)

1. Brunswick
Last Season: 11-2 overall; 2-1, Blue Ridge Conf-2nd
Region: 1A West
Head Coach: Patt Foster
Base Offense: Multiple Spread
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 8
Defensive Returning Starters: 8
Skinny: Brunswick had one of the best seasons in school history and advanced to the 1A state semi-finals in 2010. This season the Railroaders want even more. That task will be a little harder starting with the reclassification of the 1A regions. Brunswick will more into the 1A West region with traditional powers Allegany and Fort Hill, so winning the region will be challenging. The 'Roaders return 6-foot-6 , 3000-yard passer, and JMU commit Ian Fisher at QB and receivers Blaine Price and Jake Struss on offense. Dylan Brown (9 INT's), Tate Rolland (173 tackles), and Dylan Hunt (159 tackles) return on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Patt Foster started practice at midnight on August 13 to be the first team on the field. He also wants to be the last off the field in the 1A State Championship in December at M&T Bank Stadium. The 'Roaders have the weapons do accomplish that in 2011.

2. North Hagerstown
Last Season: 6-4 overall; 3-1, Antietam Conf-2nd
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Dan Cunningham
Base Offense: Multiple-I
Base Defense: 50
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Skinny: For the first time in three seasons the Hubs will not have all-everything player Anthony Winter. Winter set more offensive records than anyone in North football history. This season the Hubs will go with arsenal of weapons instead of just one. An experienced o-line with three-time all conference lineman Dylan Dopson returns, along with QB J.T. Root , RB Tre Anderson, SB Josh Hall, and WR J.R. Railing. New playmakers include RB Phillip Butler, FB Kyle Hewlett, and RB Isaiah Keyes. LB Alex Courtney, along with Dopson, Hewlett, and Anderson will lead a more aggressive defense. Coach Dan Cunningham's offense will score points, so if the defense can improve, the Hubs should contend for the conference crown---but playoffs may be a huge hill to climb. The Hubs were part of the cruel reality of reclassification---moving from 2A West to the ultra-tough 3A West region.

3.South Hagerstown
Last Season: 5-5 overall; 2-2, Antietam Conf-3rd
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Toby Peer
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: Odd Front
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Skinny: The South Hagerstown Rebels are stronger and ready to go in 2011. Coach Toby Peer believes his Rebels will make great strides this season and wants to improve on last season's 5-5 record. Gone is offensive playmaker QB Hunter Phillips, but South will fill his shoes with senior Brandon Hess. Returners include WR C. J. Davis , RB Ahmere Ware, and o-linemen Aaron Rowland and Malik Barnwell that will lead the Rebs spread offense, while S Charlie Herring, DL Jordan Bucher, and DL Rowland will lead the defense. South won two of their last three games last season and are looking to build on that this season. Making the playoffs will be tough, but with Coach Peer at the helm, this season's Rebels are up to any task.

4. Catoctin
Last Season: 5-5 overall; 1-2, Blue Ridge Conf-3rd
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Doug Williams
Base Offense: Double Wing
Base Defense: N/A
Offensive Returning Starters: N/A
Defensive Returning Starters: N/A
Skinny: Catoctin is young, but hungry and upset after the way last season ended. The Cougars were rolling through seven games, but use of an ineligible player forced Catoctin to forfeit three games, while an injury to their starting QB wrecked everything as they dropped their final two games and missed the playoffs. This season Catoctin is banking on younger players to step up and return the Cougars to the playoffs. That will also be tougher since Catoctin moved up in class and now resides in the 2A West region. Teams know not to take Catoctin lightly, especially since they have proven they can beat anyone.

5. Smithsburg
Last Season: 6-5 overall; 4-0, Blue Ridge Conf-1st (lost to Fort Hill in 1A West first round)
Region: 1A West
Head Coach: Buddy Orndorff
Base Offense: I-Formation
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 1
Defensive Returning Starters: 1
Skinny: The Leopards have had more consecutive post season trips than anyone else in the Antietam Conference. This season Smithsburg will have a tougher road if that trend is to continue due to a tougher conference schedule and a bulked up 1A West region. The Leopards return WR Thomas Smith on offense and LB Robby Houge on defense. Coach Buddy Orndorff is like a poker player with what his team has in its arsenal. With only returning a few starters from last season, it appears Smithsburg is poised for a rebuilding season, but don't believe the Leopard's poker face. Smithsburg may just duke everyone again and be in the middle of the conference race and playoff hunt.

6. Boonsboro
Last Season: 2-8 overall; 0-4, Blue Ridge Conf-5th
Region: 1A West
Head Coach: Clayton Anders
Base Offense: Wing-T
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Skinny: Only three times in the last 20 years have the Boonsboro Warriors had a losing season like last year. Losing seasons just don't happen that often in Boonsboro and Coach Clayton Anders is out to return his squad to a winning season. The Warriors will have some experience on offense with their traditional Wing-T set. Junior QB Ryan Ruiz saw action last season as a sophomore and RB Justin Jardeleza and OL J.R. Lowery have been on varsity since their freshman seasons. Defensively, Boonsboro will show a 4-4 look with DL Lowery, DB Britton Beard, DL Jared Michael, and Ruiz and Rice as DB's leading the way. Look for the Warriors to vastly improve in 2011.

7. Williamsport
Last Season: 3-7 overall; 1-3, Antietam Conf-4th
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Randy Longnecker
Base Offense: Spread Wing-T
Base Defense: Multiple
Offensive Returning Starters: 9
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Skinny: After coming so close to a playoff berth in 2009, the 2010 Williamsport Wildcats took a step back. Now if the Cats are to earn a playoff spot, they will have to do it in 2A and moving up in classification. Coach Randy Longnecker says his seniors have shown great leadership and have set a good example for the younger players. The Cats will be quicker in 2011 with sophomore Brandon Jackson taking over as QB. Last season's QB, Tyler Wise, will return to WR. RB Alex Fridley, OL Antonio Murphy, OL Zach Nalley, and Jordan Palladino will be the offensive leaders, while DB Wise, LB Seth Gross, LB Josh Miller, DL Fridley, and DE Murphy will anchor the defense.

Predictions

1. Westminster
Last Season: 6-4 overall; 6-1, Chesapeake Conf-2nd
Region: 4A North
Head Coach: Brad Wilson
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 3-5-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Skinny: Coach Brad Wilson is very high on his young 2011 Westminster Owls. The Owls are still very young, but not totally inexperienced. Numerous players got a lot of playing time last season as sophomores and juniors. Coach Wilson is hoping that experience will pay off this season. The Owls only loss within the conference last season was to undefeated South Carroll---by only three points. Jerome Cheese will run the Owls spread offense at QB, while receivers Chad Deihl and Garrett Bean will be two of his main targets. Westminster is the MVAL's largest school and lone 4A team, so expect the Owls to make a playoff run in the 4A North region. The 2011 game with the Cavs will likely again decide the conference.

2. South Carroll
Last Season: 11-1 overall; 7-0, Chesapeake Conf-1st (lost to Middletown in 2A West final)
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Steve Luette
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 3-stack
Offensive Returning Starters: 3
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Skinny: South Carroll had a dream season last year. The Cavs started 10-0, then won their first playoff game in a rout. Middletown crashed South Carroll's dream of a state title with a 30-7 victory over the Cavs. Coach Luette believes his defense will have to carry the load in 2011 as his offense has several new faces. Dan Mullen will carry the offense load at running back and Alex Breno will step in at QB. Mullen and Ryan Patrick will lead the defense. The Cavs should once again battle Westminster for the conference title and will be in the 2A West playoff race. A regular season rematch with Middletown will be a good barometer on where the Cavs stand in 2011.

3. Century
Last Season: 6-4 overall; 5-2, Chesapeake Conf-3rd
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Jim Holzman
Base Offense: Multiple Wing
Base Defense: 3-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Skinny: Century Coach Jim Holzman was very pleased at the off season training by the Knights. Coach Holzman is hoping the dedication in the off season pays off in 2011. OL Don Knox is a three-year starter that will anchor the line, while Brad MacFee will assume the QB position. MacFee's main target will be Jeff Kimble, who caught six TD's last year. Kent Kruger returns at linebacker to lead the defense. Century opens with three straight Piedmont Conference opponents, so Coach Holzman will know right away if his Knights are for real.

4. Winters Mill
Last Season: 5-5 overall; 4-3, Chesapeake Conf-4th
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Ken Johnson
Base Offense: Pro-I
Base Defense: 50
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Skinny: Speed--- Coach Ken Johnson says his Winters Mill Falcons will have more of that on both sides of the ball. The Falcons will also have one of the best kicking games in the MVAL with kicker Sebastian Cuenca and punter Dylan Steinberg. O-Lineman Marcus Jenkins, massive TE Calvert Schaefer (6'6, 255), and LB Andrew Shriver will lead the Falcons in 2011.

5. Liberty
Last Season: 5-5 overall; 3-4, Chesapeake Conf-5th
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Jeff Kent
Base Offense: Triple Option
Base Defense: 5-2
Offensive Returning Starters: 3
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Skinny: Liberty went 4-2 in the final six games last year after becoming more comfortable with the retro triple option offense. The Lions will once again run the option this season with returners Bobby Conlon (RB), Kevin Price (QB), and Ben Cohen (OL) leading the way. Casey Shea (DB) and Conlon will be the defensive leaders for the Lions.

6. North Carroll
Last Season: 3-7 overall; 1-6, Chesapeake Conf-6th
Region: 1A North
Head Coach: Jeff Oeming
Base Offense: Wing-T
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 4
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Skinny: North Carroll will compete in the 1A North region in 2011. The Panthers have a real shot at making a playoff run in their new region. Development of the offensive line and improvement of the passing game will be key to the offense. Dan Gebhart had a solid sophomore season and returns at RB. Coach Jeff Oeming believes the defense should be strong at LB (Keegan Farley, Austin Maloney) and in the secondary (Logan Ewen, Kyle Eckhardt) . Playing bigger schools means: if the Panthers can squeeze out a .500 season, they may be playing in week eleven with a weak 1A region.

7. Manchester Valley
Last Season: 2-8 overall; 1-6, Chesapeake Conf-6th
Region: 1A North
Head Coach: Tony Shermeyer
Base Offense: N/A
Base Defense: N/A
Offensive Returning Starters: N/A
Defensive Returning Starters: N/A
Skinny: Coach Tony Shermeyer enters his third season at Manchester Valley and hopes the wins will continue to go up as his players mature.

8. Francis Scott Key
Last Season: 1-9 overall; 1-6, Chesapeake Conf-6th
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Mark Hollars
Base Offense: N/A
Base Defense: N/A
Offensive Returning Starters: N/A
Defensive Returning Starters: N/A
Skinny: New Coach Mark Hollars takes over for long-time coach Bill Hyson and hopes the Eagles can improve from the recent trend of losing seasons.

Predictions

1. Urbana
Last Season: 13-0 overall; 4-0, Piedmont Conf-1st (won 4A State Championship)
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Ryan Hines
Base Offense: Pro Style
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 3
Skinny: 41. That's the number of points Urbana's defense surrendered in 13 games last season en route to a 4A State Championship. This season the Hawks will drop to arguably the toughest region in the state (3A West) to defend their state title. QB Michael Spahr will lead the offense, while DL Colton Kmetz will anchor an always stout defense. Urbana will be battle tested for the playoffs with a challenging opening game against Westlake and an always tough Piedmont Conference schedule. Coach Ryan Hines says if the talented newcomers fill holes, Urbana can continue their success and make another state title push.

2. Middletown
Last Season: 12-2 overall, 3-0 Blue Ridge Conf-1st (lost in 2A State Championship game)
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Kevin Lynott
Base Offense: I-Formation
Base Defense: 50
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 6
Skinny: For a football-rich program like Middletown, it's hard to believe they still don't own a state championship. The Knights are on a mission in 2011---to finish the job in week 14. Middletown returns QB Michael Pritts, Syracuse commit WR Ben Lewis, and DL Nick Rabat. This season the Knights will move into the much stronger Piedmont Conference with the other Frederick County powers. The conference schedule alone is daunting, but it should prep the Knights for another state title run in Class 2A.

3. Linganore
Last Season: 7-3 overall, 2-2, Piedmont Conf-3rd (lost to Damascus in 3A West Semis)
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Rick Conner
Base Offense: Multiple-I
Base Defense: 3-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 3
Skinny: Some teams would view a 7-3 record a successful season. Not the Lancers. Anything less than a state championship run is viewed as sub-par in Mt. Airy. Coach Rick Conner believes if the Lancers stay healthy they can compete. Maryland commit RB Joe Riddle will lead the Lancers. The I-70 rivalry with Urbana could settle the conference title and a playoff spot in the ultra-tough "region of death" (3A West). Coach Conner and the Lancers know a 7-3 record will not be good enough to get Linganore into the playoffs in 2011, so every regular season game is a playoff game to them.

4. Thomas Johnson
Last Season: 7-4 overall, 3-1, Piedmont Conf-2nd (lost to Patterson in 4A North semis)
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Ben Wright
Base Offense: Multiple-I
Base Defense: Multiple
Offensive Returning Starters: 8
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Skinny: Thomas Johnson is coming off a Class 4A playoff berth, but was hit hard by the opening of Oakdale and is dropping to class 3A to start 2011. The Pats have a few standout players (Wayne Shultz OL, 6'5, 320; Bernard Berney RB, 5'10, 225; Heath Dalgren QB, 6-2, 190) this season, but Coach Ben Wright is worried about depth since losing players to the new school. Coach Wright says his squad has experience on offense and a solid line, but cannot afford injuries with a brutal schedule. With Wright at the helm expect TJ to be in the mix for a playoff spot---even in the "region of death".

5. Frederick
Last Season: 1-9 overall, 0-4, Piedmont Conf-5th
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Vince Ahearn
Base Offense: Pro
Base Defense: 4-2
Offensive Returning Starters: 9
Defensive Returning Starters: 9
Skinny: Nobody in the Piedmont Conference returns more starters than Frederick and nobody in the conference has a playmaker like senior receiver Jalen Gee. So why are the Cadets being picked fifth? That's life in the Piedmont Conference. You can have a super-talented team and still be in the middle of the pack. The Cadets will try to use that experience to make a push in the standings after a 1-9 2010 season. Former Tuscarora coach Shawn Carey will join Vince Ahearn's staff as offensive coordinator and implement a new pro style offense. The offense will likely revolve around the four-year starter Gee, who is getting D-I looks and QB Matt Hynes.

6. Tuscarora
Last Season: 4-6 overall, 1-3, Piedmont Conf-4th
Region: 3A West
Head Coach: Dean Swink
Base Offense: Spread / I-Formation
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 7
Defensive Returning Starters: 8
Skinny: Dean Swink hopes the Titans can return to the form of 2008 & 2009. In those seasons Tuscarora qualified for the 3A West playoffs. That won't be easy with seven playoffs teams on the Titans 2011 schedule. The Titans do have 15 returning starters including OL Brady Stup and DB Abu Kiawu and won't be a pushover this season.

7. Walkersville
Last Season: 6-5 overall, 0-3, Blue Ridge Conf-4th
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Joe Polce
Base Offense: Multiple-I
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Skinny: Walkersville started 2010 with a 6-1 record and looked to be the team to beat in the 2A West region. However the Lions dropped four straight games to end the 2010, including two losses to arch-rival Middletown. The Lions star-studded backfield duo of Quinten Ezell and Jose Depauda are gone, but Walkersville does return passing combo QB Brady Policelli and WR Jacob Miller. If the Lions can muster a winning season in the brutal Piedmont Conference, they should qualify for the playoffs in 2A West.

8. Oakdale
Last Season: First Varsity Season
Region: 2A West
Head Coach: Kurt Stein
Base Offense: Spread Wing
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: N/A
Defensive Returning Starters: N/A
Skinny: Oakdale will walk right into the fire in their first season of varsity football. Head Coach Kurt Stein knows what's ahead of his team jumping from JV to a full varsity schedule in the MVAL's toughest conference. Stein says the Bears are hungry and up to the challenges they face. RB/LB Mike McGraw (Good Counsel transfer) and WR Kevin Heine will lead the Bears in 2011.
2012 MVAL Commitments
