Liberty hoops coach Johnson dies

By Pat Stoetzer, Times Staff Writer Carroll County Times

Liberty High School's athletic program lost one of its longtime fixtures Wednesday morning when varsity boys basketball coach Steven Johnson died from complications due to a lung infection.

Johnson, 50, recently decided to leave the team while dealing with his illness. His wife, Veronica Johnson, said he underwent surgery about three weeks ago but had to remain in the hospital during recovery.

Tuscarora's Wagner steps down

By Bill Cauley , Frederick News-Post Staff

With two kids at home, Dan Wagner knew the time would soon come for him to stop coaching for a while, and it arrived last week.

Wagner resigned as Tuscarora's boys basketball coach, ending a seven-year tenure at the school that began when the school opened in 2003.

A new coach has not been named.

"I know it's a clich?, but it's for family reasons," Wagner said. "It's time to spend more time with the children."

During the past three seasons, the Titans enjoyed their greatest success. They won MVAL-Chesapeake championships in 2007 and 2008 and were Class 3A West finalists two years ago, losing to Bethesda-Chevy Chase in the championship game.

Tuscarora went 17-6 this season, losing to James Hubert Blake in the regional semifinals.

Wagner, a social studies teacher at Tuscarora, had been a head boys coach in New York for three years before coming to Frederick County, landing a teaching job at Middletown High School. He became an assistant coach in 2002 under former Knights boys coach Jon Jarrett.

"My classroom was across the hall from Jon's," Wagner said. "We started talking shop. First thing you know, I'm his assistant."

Wagner also learned from current Middletown co-head coach Tim Leber that there comes a time, eventually, when family trumps coaching. He also watched Jarrett go through the same phase, stepping aside altogether from coaching at the end of this season for his family duties.

"I'm still committed to my former players," Wagner said. "I'm going to be active with open gym and helping to run the summer leagues. I'm going to stay involved that way."

Will Wagner return to coaching someday, after his children get older?

"Absolutely, I plan on coming back," he said.

Urbana nabs Cooper as head coach

Originally published May 20, 2010

By Greg Swatek, Frederick News-Post Staff

Urbana ----John Cooper was all set to join his boss of the last four years at Urbana , Terry Connolly, on the boys basketball staff at Oakdale High School or perhaps pursue another coaching opportunity.

But when Cooper recently asked for a reference from Urbana athletic director Kevin Kendro, he learned something that piqued his interest: Kendro was interested in replacing the departing Connolly with Cooper, a varsity assistant.

Thus began a whirlwind hiring process in which Cooper interviewed for the job on Tuesday and was formally introduced Wednesday afternoon as Urbana 's new boys basketball coach in the school's cafeteria.

"I don't think they knew I was interested," Cooper said.

Cooper, 51, appealed to Urbana because of his successful track record as the Hawks boys junior varsity coach ----the team only lost one game last season ----and he fit into the school's preferred method of hiring from within its own ranks.

In the last two months, Urbana has promoted two basketball assistants to the job of head coach.

On April 1, ninth-grade coach Jessica Mills was named the girls varsity basketball coach. Mills replaces longtime coach Chris Krivos, who will be the athletic director at Oakdale.

Kendro said "numerous" candidates, from within and outside Frederick County, were interviewed for the boys position. But no one impressed him more than Cooper.

"He's the best guy for the job," Kendro said. "The relationships he's built with the kids here at school and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game of basketball will be valuable to us."

Cooper said the style of play he runs will be similar to Connolly's. Although, in brief remarks to the team Wednesday, Connolly made it a point to note that Cooper was wearing a suit and tie, an immediate and apparent clash of styles between them.

"What you're losing in good looks, you're gaining in fashion," Connolly told the players.

Cooper has great admiration for everything Connolly accomplished at Urbana , which included leading the Hawks to a 21-3 record and their first appearance in the state semifinals last season.

He said one of the biggest challenges he faces on his new job is, "I'm not Terry Connolly."

Cooper grew up playing basketball in Gaithersburg. He was friends with one of Connolly's older brothers, Chris.

"I was shocked the first time I met (Terry)," Cooper said. "His brothers are like 5-foot-7 and 5-8 and he's 6-5."

They never were close because of their age difference. But Cooper followed Connolly's playing career at Thomas Johnson High School and the University of Richmond, and his rise through the coaching ranks in Frederick County.

When Connolly came back to Urbana as the boys coach in 2006, Cooper approached him and inquired about an assistant's job.

"I knew he was going to need some people to help," said Cooper, who had previously served as an assistant at Magruder High School.

Connolly knew of Cooper's work ethic through his relationship with his brothers and he even played adult league basketball with him.

"First and foremost, he's a basketball junkie. He loves the game of basketball and has a passion that most people don't have," Connolly said. "The other big thing is he knows this community and he knows the kids."

In the four years they worked together, Cooper said Connolly helped reshape and refine his knowledge of the game. Cooper used to subscribe to a freewheeling style of play until he bought into Connolly's more-structured approach.

Though he never envisioned succeeding him at Urbana , Cooper also said Connolly helped prepare him for the opportunity to run his own program.

When it arrived suddenly, he couldn't turn it down.

"I told the people here at Urbana , 'If you appreciate anything I have done here, you will hire a good person to replace me,'" Connolly said. "John is not only a good X's and O's guy, he's a good person."

Middletown restructures Coaching Staff

The Middletown High School boys basketball program has re-organized its coaching staff. Jon Jarrett, head coach for the last 10 seasons, has resigned his position so that he can devote more time at home with his wife, Michiko, and one-year-old son, David.

Tim Leber will remain in the position of co-head coach and will work with Aaron White, an assistant in the Middletown program for the last 15 years. Coach Leber will coordinate the after-school workouts in the spring and fall and will continue to co-direct the summer youth basketball camp with Coach Jarrett.

Coach White will supervise off-season open gyms and the summer league program and will handle the many responsibilities of the head coach position during the season. Coach Leber will assist Coach White during the regular season.

“I had a great time coaching at Middletown High for the last 10 years,” said Coach Jarrett. “I’m thankful to the previous coaches in the program who helped me, and I’m thankful for all of the coaches on our coaching staff. The community, the parents, and the players were all great to work with. Now I want to do anything that I can to help Coach White be successful. He’s a great friend and colleague, and he’s always been a hard worker with an outstanding gift for working the teenagers.”

Coach White graduated from Messiah College in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science. He played on the basketball team for two years and also competed in track (1,500 meters and javelin) for two years.

“Aaron White is so deserving of this opportunity, and I'm excited to have the chance to help him in any way that I can,” said Coach Leber. “Coach White has been extremely loyal to our program over the last 15 years, and he's quite simply an outstanding man, role model, teacher, and coach.

He's dedicated, determined, organized, hard-working, and passionate. He will do a super job of leading the young men in the program, and I'm really excited for him.”

A 1988 graduate of Catoctin High School, Coach White played basketball for two years at Frederick Community College under Coach Jim Weddle before moving on to Messiah. At FCC, he earned the Cougar Award for the highest grade point average on the team and the Hardcourt Award for outstanding effort.

“It has been an honor coaching with two of the best and devoted coaches in the county for the past 15 years,” said Coach White. “I have learned a lot both on and off the court from Coach Jarrett and Coach Leber and will do my best to continue the tradition of hard-nosed, competitive basketball at MHS. It has been a pleasure working with the young men in this program at the JV level, and as the varsity coach, I look forward to continuing to help them grow and develop both on the basketball court and as young men as they move into the next phases of their lives.”

Coach White has worked with 13 players at Middletown who have gone on to play college basketball. He was an assistant coach for the school’s two most recent state tournament teams in 1996 and 1998. Coach White and his wife, Jamie, live in Jefferson.
Grabill named Clear Spring coach

By TIM KOELBLE

April 6, 2010

CLEAR SPRING — The first time Clear Spring and Williamsport get together next season in boys basketball will be interesting from a coaching standpoint.

Williamsport junior varsity coach Ryan Grabill has been named the new boys varsity head coach at Clear Spring, replacing Mark Shives, who stepped down recently.

Grabill accepted the position on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s bittersweet, but an exciting opportunity,” said Grabill, who has known the Wildcats’ colors all his life. “I will be leaving what I have called home my entire life.”

Grabill, 27, graduated from Williamsport in 2000 before playing at Frostburg State until graduating in 2005.

He coached Williamsport in summer league basketball while at Frostburg State, and when the Wildcats’ JV job opened, he took over for the 2005-06 season.

“My high school coach (Deron Crawford) had a lot of trust in me as a sophomore, and I admired Kevin Murphy and had the itch to become a coach when I was in middle school,” said Grabill.

As a coach, Grabill learned under Williamsport varsity head coach Scott Mowbray.

“I’m so thankful for everything Scott has done for me,” said Grabill. “He’s been a great influence and taken me under his wing. He told me from the first day he would prepare me for this day. He is the major reason I feel I am ready for this.”

Grabill is a physical education teacher at Bester Elementary School, and works with Mark Shives.

“We are very excited to have Ryan as our new head coach,” said Clear Spring athletic director Lisa Shives. “I’ve seen him coach for many years and am impressed by how he handles his teams. He is young, has experience and definitely is a basketball person. He will continue the enthusiasm that Mark brought into our basketball program.”

Grabill plans on continuing to build on what Mark Shives has constructed, down on to the junior program. He said he wants to create an identity on down through middle school.

Grabill is the second new boys coach in Washington County. Boonsboro recently hired Skip Chambers.
Boonsboro hires Chambers

By TIM KOELBLE, Herald-Mail

March 29, 2010

BOONSBORO -- Boonsboro athletic director Mark Wadel wasn’t about to pass on the prospect of having decades of experience on the sidelines to lead the boys basketball team next season.

Wadel confirmed on Monday that Skip Chambers, the former longtime varsity assistant at St. Maria Goretti, would become the Warriors’ new head coach. Boonsboro languished with a 1-21 record last season.

Chambers will not only assume the position, but he could tentatively have plenty more experience joining him.

Former Goretti coach Cokey Robertson is considering to come on as an assistant along with Andy Reed, who also assisted Robertson at Goretti. If Robertson and Reed join Chambers’ staff, there will be nearly 90 years of coaching experience on the Warriors’ bench.

“How can you not be excited with all this experience,” said Wadel. “We decided to go in a different direction and (Chambers) let us know he would be interested.”

Wadel said the school completed the annual coaches evaluations and decided it was time to move in a new direction, replacing John Taylor, who was the coach for two years.

Chambers, who teaches social studies at Boonsboro High School, fit into the teacher-coach policy of the Washington County Public Schools and will be an in-house coach.

“It will be nice to have a coach right in the school,” said Wadel.

Chambers and his staff are expected to meet with prospective returning players today.
