TJ sweeps by Urbana to earn team titles
By Darren J. Gendron | Staff Writer
Even if the rain wouldn't stop, the reign of the Urbana High cross country teams officially ended at the Frederick County Championship, held Saturday at Kemptown Park.
Thomas Johnson swept both team titles, snatching away two long-held county crowns from the Hawks.
In the boys race, Thomas Johnson won with 35 points, placing its scoring five in the top 10. Urbana slipped to third with 68 points, also falling to second-place Walkersville's 54.
Urbana's Jimmy Miller, a junior, won the boys race in 17:02.1. He fended off second-place Stephen Keith of Walkersville and Scott Shatto of Thomas Johnson, who took third.
The Patriots also placed all five of their scoring girls in the top 10 finishers with a total of 26 points, only 11 points off of a perfect score, beating Urbana's 61 by a tidy margin.
Stephanie Bryan led the pack with a second-place run, finishing the 3.1-mile Slip ‘N Slide equivalent in 20 minutes, 8.9 seconds.
"It was really fun. Probably my favorite race this season," Bryan said. "It was really slippery. We didn't walk the whole course, so I didn't really know what was coming for turns and stuff."
Standing just past the exit chute at the end of the race, Bryan kept an eye on her teammates finishes. Kristen Luttrell took third, and Savanna Plombon was sixth.
When Thomas Johnson's No. 7 runner came in before any other No. 5 runner was in sight, she was still hesitant to call the Patriots the Frederick County Champions.
"Maybe. I don't know. I don't want to jump to any conclusions," Bryan said.
At that point, the only thing that could have taken away their title was if three of their runners were disqualified. She noted that she at least didn't foul anyone on the course.
"Not that I remember, no," Bryan said.
It was understandable why there was hesitancy to take the county title - Urbana had won every year since 2000.
Kemptown Park used to be one of the more recognizable courses in Frederick County, as it's often the host for the county championship and used to be the site for the Lancer Invitational. But the Invitational hasn't been run since 2005, so for most of the runners it was their first time on the course.
Sara Fisher, Brunswick's standout senior, won the girls race by a 35-second margin with a time of 19:34.0. It was her first official race at Kemptown.
"I did a course walk with the team, and last night my dad drove me out to do a course walk, too," Fisher said. "I was a little bit worried [about taking a wrong turn]. I did two course walks and I was still nervous."
Fisher had plenty of reason to worry, after taking a wrong turn at the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Championships last week, held on the Woodsboro Park course. Despite the detour, she was still able to get back on course for the win.
For at least the first mile, Bryan and a hefty chunk of the Thomas Johnson pack were keeping pace with Fisher, but she doesn't remember exactly when she pulled away.
"I don't know," Fisher said. "I guess after a while I stopped hearing her feet splashing behind me. But I don't know when that was."

Carroll teams dominate in Westminster Invitational Meet
By Darren J. Gendron, The Gazette Staff Writer
South Carroll High is tired of being the punchline in cross country.
The Cavaliers had a less than spectacular stretch of running, summed up by the girls team finishing sixth in the Carroll County championships last year, and the boys finishing last.
Their only accolades were limited to individual achievements, and senior C.J. Naper admitted that even those were few and far between.
‘‘We didn’t do very well last year,” Naper said.
Naper never cracked the top 10 individual finishers in any major race last year. The distance program as a whole didn’t fare much better in the track seasons. And the Class 2A West Region track tournament was the final straw.
However on Tuesday, the Cavaliers’ frustration from 2005 spurned them onto solid finishes at the Westminster High Invitational.
The South Carroll boys came in second place, with 84 points. They beat the defending 2A State champions Liberty by five points.
‘‘[Last year] I ended up losing and not making to the states by a couple seconds in each race, I was just like, crap, I’m right there,” Naper said. ‘‘After regionals from outdoor track, I wanted to keep running. I asked the other guys if they wanted to keep running.”
From there, things began to roll. South Carroll’s coaching staff helped get things moving, and the parents of Rachel Sykes, Emily Powell and Doug Findeisen helped found the South Carroll Summer Running Club.
‘‘We went to running camps at Virginia Tech,” Powell said. ‘‘We even started running before school got out.”
For three days a week, the running club started meeting at South Carroll High, where they put in laps on their high school course as well as the occasional field trip to courses at Bull Run in Harford County and Westminster.
Tuesday’s boys race quickly turned into a three-pack affair. Francis Scott Key unveiled a tight and speedy pack, finishing with 31 points after Arthur Leathers won in 16 minutes, 34 seconds.
Naper led South Carroll with a third-place finish at 16:56, while Liberty’s Eric Liberatore was behind him at 17:06.
‘‘It was just right at the end,” Liberatore said. ‘‘He was with Arthur for a long time, because C.J. likes to go out fast. I was just chilling back, and at the end of the race was when I was starting to catch up to him.”
The key for the Cavaliers was the pack, with Doug Findeisen (14) and Jake Larson (16) beating Liberty’s Pat Kelsh (19), and Cody Nenninger (20) coming in ahead of Mike Meadows (21), Pat Dougherty (22) and Tim Souders (23). Stephen Phillips rounded out the South Carroll pack at 31.
The Century boys were ninth at 198 points.
For the girls, South Carroll finished in fourth with 134 points, just behind Century in third with 129. Howard County cross country powers Centennial (79) and Mount Hebron (86) took the top two spots, and when Katie Hursey of North Carroll won the individual title in 19:02, 20 seconds in front of the pack.
Sykes finished fourth at 20:46, and Powell was ninth at 21:08.
For the Cavaliers, their run club motto of ‘‘the races might be run in the fall, but they’re won in the summer” is ringing true. They put in up to 10 miles a day, and 400 miles total. And when it came time for the first week of practice, there was a major difference.
‘‘They actually started faster into actual workouts this year,” Sykes said.
It was a huge difference from last year, where they only got in a couple weeks of loose running before any real practices got moving. But now, South Carroll won’t be slipping in under any radar.
‘‘I’m not really worried about it. It’s more competition, and better races,” Naper said.
Other key standouts in the race include Century’s Carly Reed at sixth (20:55), and Middletown’s Rebecca Ahalt finishing 12th (21:27).
Frederick’s Shamika Patton, still recovering from knee surgery, took 13th. Frederick girls head coach Jennie Novak noted that it’s really only the start of the comeback for the three-season runner.
‘‘She went through rehabilitation until the end of July, they extended it,” Novak said. ‘‘She just started running, so she’s not yet even in shape.”
The Liberty girls took sixth, led by Liz Pickett and Laura Ball taking 17th and 18th. Middletown finished seventh, Frederick 11th and Tuscarora 13th.
