Whiten hired to coach TJ girls hoops
By Greg Swatek , Frederick News-Post Staff
Upon receiving the official news, Darryl Whiten walked to his car in the parking lot at Thomas Johnson High School, dropped into the driver's seat and began to cry.
"They were tears of joy," said Whiten, who had just learned he was the Patriots' new girls basketball coach.
After serving as an assistant coach at TJ since 2000 for the boys and the girls teams, Whiten finally had the head coaching job he had coveted for a long time.
"I had been praying for a head coaching job in Frederick County for a long time," said Whiten, who also called high school games on WFMD (AM 930) for many years.
"My mother (Diane Simmons) always told me that when prayers go up, blessings come down."
Now, Whiten begins the work of rebuilding the TJ girls program, which finished 2-20 last season.
"Not only are we going to have to find the right pieces to the puzzle, we are going to have to get them put together correctly," he said. "It's going to take some time."
One of the main references on Whiten's r?sum? is new University of Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari, whom he played with at Clarion University in the early 1980s.
"He's been very dear to me," Whiten said. "He's helped me in a whole lot of situations."
Whiten texted Calipari to tell him he was in the running for the head coaching job at TJ.
"He asked me if there was anything he could do to help," Whiten said. "He said he'd be happy to put a good word in for me. It probably didn't hurt that our principal (Marlene A. Tarr) is a Kentucky grad."

2006-07 Beef 'O Brady's Year End Awards
Antietam Conference
Players of the Year:
Jerica Hewett-Boonsboro (Jerica, headed to play at Shepherd (WV), averaged 14.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 5.8 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game. All-Antietam Conference first team. Topped the 1000-point mark for her career and became the leading scorer at Boonsboro. Leads the tri-state area in assists and steals and is third in blocks)
Defensive Player of the Year
Valentina Wheeler-North Hagerstown (Valentina Wheeler was the defensive stopper for North Hagerstown this past season. She had 74 steals but more importantly created havoc for opposing teams with her fierce man on ball pressure and her ability to create forced turnovers. Frequently another teammate would be credited with a steal when Valentina had in fact created the opportunity for them. In one of her best games she held Jerica Hewett to 8 hard earned points in a 60-31 late season win over the Warriors which ultimately decided the the regular season Antietam championship)
Coach of the Year
Barry Brown-North Hagerstown (Brown guided the Hubs to their first girls basketball conference championship in 22 years. North Hagerstown won the MVAL-Antietam Conference with a 13-1 mark and went 21-4 overall and advanced to the regional final, where they fell to undefeated Walkersville by ten points. The regional final appearance was the first since the mid-80's for the Hubs)
Game of the Year
Williamsport vs. Catoctin regional playoff game (In front of packed house at Catoctin, after being down 16-4 early in the game the Wildcats battled back and when Lindsey Smith of Williamsport scored the go ahead basket with 10 seconds to play it gave the Lady Wildcats a 49-48 win. Catoctin made a basket to go ahead 48-47 with 23 seconds left in the game sending the crowd into hysterics. I have been coaching for 20 years and have never heard a louder cheer. Under pressure Williamsport came down and answered with Smith's basket. Catoctin's desperation shot at the buzzer fell short and the Wildcats hung on for the victory. Absolutely the best game I have ever been the head coach--Chris Malott, Williamsport Coach)
Chesapeake Conference
Player of the Year:
Meredith Tolley-Urbana (This Loyola bound senior led all Frederick County Scorers with an 18.7 ppg average. The Hawks were 17 & 2 with Tolley in the line-up and Co-Champions of the MVAL Chesapeake Division. Without Meredith Urbana was 1 & 6. Tolley, for the third consecutive year, was selected Chesapeake Conference Player of the Year by the leagues' coaches and was the leading vote getter in the County City All Star Game. Additonally, Tolley recieved a nomination to the McDonald's All-American Team for the 2007 season. What is most impressive about these stats is that Tolley faced mainly Box and 1s and double and triple teams all season long. At 6' tall, Meredith is a strong post presence but is knwom better for her prolific 3-pt shooting. She is a complete player)
Defensive Player of the Year
Sami Kozlowski-Linganore (6 rebs/gm, 5 steals/gm. As a defensive player there is no one close to Kozlowski. She always covered the opposing teams toughest offensive threat. In two games this season against Urbana she held Tolley to a total of 16pts. When asked by the Frederick News-Post why Tolley had trouble scoring, Krivos replied that "Sami Kozlowski happened to Tolley")
Coach of the Year
Bonnie Robinson-Thomas Johnson (In her first season with the Patriots, Robinson led TJ to a share of the conference title with a 10-2 league record and a 16-5 overall mark)
Game of the Year
Linganore at Thomas Johnson (Thomas Johnson dominated the Lancers at Linganore in the first game. The Lancers went to TJ's place for the last game of the year. It was Senior Night and they would clinch the conference title outright with a win. Both Holly and Sami had great games and Jen Bonifant hits a free throw with 1.9 secs. left to give Linganore a one point victory. T.J. has to share the title with Urbana)
Urbana at Linganore (On February 20, 2007 the Lancers and Hawks had six lead changes, a packed house at LHS, and 1st place is Chesapeake Division on the line. In the end, Urbana pulled out a 49-46 victory)
Piedmont Conference
Player of the Year:
April Sparkman-Walkersville (April had another outstanding year in helping lead the Lady Lions to an undefeated regular season record. April averaged 16.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 3.4apg along with being a very solid defender. This 1,000 point scorer shot 51.1 2pt.%, 40.1% from behind the arc, and 77.4 from the free throw line. April was named 1st team all-conference in each of her three varsity seasons)
Defensive Player of the Year
Samantha Schanuel-Walkersville (Sam had an outstanding year for the Lions who allowed under 35ppg for opponents. Samantha was a dominant force in the paint, and controlled the boards (11.6 rpg). She had 30 blocked shoots on the year and altered several others)
Coach of the Year
Mike Mathis-Walkersville (Mathias led Walkersville to an undefeated regular season and the 2A West Regional Championship. The Lions were no match for anyone in the Piedmont, finishing a perfect 12-0)
Game of the Year
Winters Mill at Middletown (The Falcons went to Middletown and upset the Knights 44-40)
