North Hagerstown defeats South, 9-8
By JACK HILL III, Herald-Mail
Senior Rachel Amalfitano led No. 6 North Hagerstown to a 9-8 victory over rival South Hagerstown in an MVAL Piedmont softball game Tuesday at South.
Amalfitano, the winning pitcher, allowed just three earned runs in seven innings. She also sparked the Hubs’ offense with four RBIs. She hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to give the Hubs a 7-4 lead, and then drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to break an 8-8 tie.
“(Amalfitano) had a great all-around day offensively and defensively,” said North coach Amanda Fleming, whose team improved to 5-1 (4-0). “It is unfortunate that our defense did not come to play today and help her out like they should have. But she stayed focused and pitched well.”
“I was hitting spots and I was trying to mix up pitches,” Amalfitano said. “I felt very comfortable with my pitching. What we lacked on defense today, we made up with our batting. We were waiting for the pitches to hit. We got them and we drove in the runs. Our offense is what carried us today.”
Courtney Bowlus and Amalfitano had two hits each, while Allysen Breeden scored two runs for the Hubs.
“Our offense is coming around,” Fleming said. “We got some nice hits today. It’s always going to be close and competitive when you have a North-South game. We were lucky to pull out the win.”
The Rebels fell to 3-5 (2-2).
“I don’t think that we showed up to play,” South coach Angie McQuillen said. “We have got to play seven innings.”
Destanie Agee had two hits and scored two runs for the Rebels, while Desiree Giffin and Courtney Showe had two hits each and Elisabeth Sharpe scored two runs.
Each team had eight of its nine starters hit safely.

Thomas Johnson softball pushes past Urbana
by Todd McElwee | Staff Writer, The Gazette
Ahead 0-2 with two outs in the top of seventh inning, Thomas Johnson High pitcher Kathryn Larson struck out the final Urbana batter swinging.
It was the perfect ending for the junior hurler as the host Patriots won 7-3 in her season debut on Monday.
"I wanted to strike her out pretty badly," Larson said. "I could just imagine her getting a hit and just ruining it."
Larson took the circle in the top of the fifth in relief of Victoria Linton with the score tied at 3-3. Showing no rust, she allowed no runs and just three hits while fanning four to close out the contest.
Urbana threatened in the sixth. Mounting a two-out rally, Nikki Lunn and Kristen Juenger reached base. Larson retired the next hitter with a pop fly to right field.
"I thought [Larson's performance] was very good," TJ head coach Ed Zaleski said.
"I like her speed. She throws the ball really hard. Overall she did a really good job."
Trailing 3-0, the Patriots (3-1, 1-1 Monocacy Valley Athletic League Chesapeake Conference) responded with three runs in their half of the third. Four singles help plate four runs in the following segment. Annie McShea spurred TJ's attack with a two-run home run. The co-captain went 2 for 4 with three RBI. Jade Bowins was 3 for 4 while Ashley Reimnitz added a pair of hits and an RBI. Starter Linton allowed three runs while whiffing a trio of Hawks in four innings of work.
"We came in a little behind, but we pulled through for a good win," Larson said. The Hawks (3-2, 1-2) battled throughout the afternoon. Cleanly fielding a bunt, in the bottom of the sixth, pitcher Alex Murphy teamed up with second baseman Dava Gray, who was covering first for the out.
Gray sent a crisp toss to Caitlin Wilkes at third, who punched out an encroaching TJ runner. Juenger was 3 for 4 with a triple and run scored. Gray, Rosalie Willis and Jessica Trammell also drove in runs.
"I'm really pleased with the way these young ladies performed today," Urbana head coach Frank Husson said.
"Victoria has been one of the top pitchers in the area for a few years and to come out and hit the ball the way we [did], I was real pleased with that."
Three days earlier, TJ defeated host Walkersville 8-0. Linton hurled a three-hitter, striking out eight in the victory. Michelle Clapp had three hits, including a triple. Bowins, Shelia Blank and Jen Featherstone chipped in with two hits each.
