Frederick earns hard fought triumph, Cougars fall short in comeback
By Andy MacAlpine | Special to The Gazette
Frederick's Jenna Connors bumps the ball during Tuesday's match against Catoctin. The Cadets won the match, 3-2.
The Frederick High volleyball team got a much-needed shot of confidence Tuesday night.
After losing starting setter Courtney Dentinger and a two-game lead, the Cadets regained their composure in time to win a heated fifth game and claim a 3-2 victory over visiting Catoctin.

North Hagerstown defeats Westminster, 3-1
By JACK HILL III, Herald-Mail
The North Hagerstown volleyball team overcame a shaky start with a stronger finish for a 25-15, 19-25, 25-18 25-22 win over Westminster on Tuesday in a season-opening match.
“We didn’t pass real well,” North Hagerstown coach Megan Crawford said. “When we did pass well, we couldn’t put the ball down in the first two games. In the next two games, we started putting it all together. We had too many unforced errors. I saw a lot of good things that we can build on for the next match.”
North Hagerstown was up two games to one, but trailed 17-13 during the fourth game. The Hubs finished with a flurry, outscoring the Owls 12-5 to close out the match. Sophomore Mollie Johnson scored five straight service points to give the Hubs their first lead in the game at 21-19, but Westminster didn’t waver.
Senior outside hitter Anna Wade closed out the match with a service ace to win the game and give the Hubs the victory.
“Earlier, I made a mistake,” Wade said. “I was thinking that I had to make it up. I knew the score was really close. When I was serving, I was thinking that I just needed to get it in. I thought about serving it short, because I knew that it was hard for passers. I served it short. I thought the ace was a good climax to the night.”
Wade finished the evening with 11 service points and nine kills.
In the opening game, Wade snapped a 3-3 tie by reeling off seven straight service points to give North Hagerstown a 10-3 advantage. It set the tone for the Hubs for a five-point cushion throughout the game.
“I knew that I was starting to aim for spots,” Wade said. “I felt that it helped my teammates bring up our energy in the game, because we were really down in the beginning.
“Coming into the match, we knew that this would set the stage for the season,” Wade said. “We felt the pressure of the first match. We brought it together to get a win.”
Megan Plume contributed 24 assists for North Hagerstown. Akilah McCall and Autumn Fisher got eight kills each, while Rachel Ober added eight service points for the Hubs.
Emily Armacost got 11 service points and Emily Spence had nine service points for Westminster.
“I thought that it was a well-played match by both teams,” Westminster coach Joanne Brophy said. “We had some mental errors in the beginning that set us back a little bit. But overall, both teams played hard. Near the end of the match, North put the ball down more than we did. They executed their plays better and they had less mental errors.”
Middletown needs five games to defeat South Hagerstown
By DAN KAUFFMAN, Herald-Mail
Will the real South Hagerstown volleyball team please stand up?
Rebels coach Chuck Weaver has to hope the real team is the one that showed up from the third game on in its season opener Tuesday night against Middletown.
After playing poorly the first two games, South righted the ship and took the next two. But the Knights picked their level up in the Game 5 tiebreaker and pulled out a 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 15-11 victory.
“Games 1 and 2, we didn’t gel, and we haven’t been jelling in practice, either,” Weaver said. “(In Game 3) the serve receive picked up, and the game’s a lot easier when you pass well.”
South committed 10 errors in Game 1 and 13 in Game 2. Aside from Rebecca Pearl’s six kills in Game 2, the Rebels’ offense ground to a halt, while Middletown’s offense — led by Mattie Smith and Ashley Higginbotham — was impressive.
“Our passing and our serve receive wasn’t there, and no matter how many guns you have up front, if you can’t feed them, it doesn’t matter,” Weaver said. “If you had asked me after Game 1, I’d have said we’d be out of here in three (games).”
To their credit, the Rebels never packed it in. They played their best game in Game 3, committing just four errors while Emma Stahl, Morgan McCoy and Kara Henson got involved in the attack. Pearl and McCoy had four kills, Stahl had three and Henson added two.
Stahl had four kills, Pearl three and McCoy two as South pulled out a tight Game 4. The Rebels faced deficits of 21-17 and 24-22, but four Middletown errors helped get them off the hook. At 24-24, Kara Burgan hit a clean ace to the back right corner, and at 25-24, Stahl came up with a game-ending kill.
“They definitely didn’t give up. They showed a lot of heart in Game 4,” Weaver said.
While South committed only two errors in Game 5, Weaver was unhappy with the defense as Middletown scored 11 of its 15 points on kills.
“We were flat in the tiebreaker,” Weaver said. “We played a couple balls poorly in the beginning and it flatted everyone’s mood. Our defense needs to start reading a little quicker. When we went flat, we got lazy and our feet were stuck in cement.”
Higginbotham had 19 kills, Smith had 18 kills and Holly Wright had 43 assists to lead the Knights.
Pearl finished with 17 kills and 14 digs to pace South. McCoy had 10 kills, Stahl had nine kills and 11 digs, Henson had six kills and 11 digs, and Megan Vance had 39 assists.
JV: Middletown, 25-16, 25-10.

Liberty reclaims throne
By Brian Haines, Carroll County Times Staff Writer
COLLEGE PARK — After cruising through the state semifinals, the Liberty volleyball team kept on rolling by dispatching of Rising Sun 25-17, 25-21 and 25-19 to capture the Class 2A state title on Friday night at Ritchie Coliseum on the University of Maryland campus.
As the final hit touched the court, the Lions raced into a circle in the middle of the floor, jumping up and down to celebrate Liberty’s return to volleyball prominence at the state level.
The Lions (17-2) dominated Eastern Tech in the semifinals on Tuesday and first-year coach Lauren Eberhardt felt it was their time.
“Everybody knew deep down inside that we got here. We got to win,” said Eberhardt. “And that we are going to do it and we won it in three games.”
Liberty was appearing in the state tournament for the seventh time in eight years. It was the Lions’ fifth trip to the finals, and their third state championship after winning back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004.
Like they had for most of the season, seniors Kelly Vieira and Amanda McCracken led the Lions to victory. The Tigers had no answer for McCracken, who registered 14 kills, as many of her finishes came after Rising Sun had seemingly grabbed some momentum.
Vieira was all over the court, finishing with nine kills, eight digs and four service aces. While the Tigers had big-time finisher Lindsey Monger near the net (19 kills), they didn’t have enough firepower to combat McCracken and Vieira at the same time.
“We didn’t let our guard down,” said McCracken. “We are a team that loves to come out with momentum and then get comfortable, but I don’t think we ever got comfortable this game.”
After Rising Sun was down to their last point against River Hill in the semifinals, the Tigers pulled out a victory and took the next two games to complete the stunning upset. Throughout the final match, however, they seemed a step slower than Liberty and the Lions weren’t about to let them off the hook with a championship at stake.
Sophomore Jordan Groose’s serving was pinpoint accurate and Eberhardt called it the best game Groose has served all year. Senior Emily Reider led the squad with 18 digs, with several big ones coming off powerful kill attempts by Monger.
Sarah Lawrence led the Lions with 26 assists, setting up the finishers in perfect position around the net all night long.
After struggling with a 9-8 record last year, the Lions seniors were highly motivated to show the doubters they still had the spark and skill of past Lions teams that appeared in the state semifinals on a regular basis.
Now there shouldn’t be any naysayers after the Lions breezed through the state playoffs winning all six of their games in the semifinals and final.
“It feels great finishing with a big bang,” said Vieira. “And ending on how we should have ended and how we knew we could end and what we worked towards all season.”
