Rachel Rousseau

Rousseau will return with Hall as the core of the UHS squad next year.  As a freshman, the third baseman led the Hawks with a .457 batting average, and added 30 RBIs and three home runs.  Parks will look for her be UHS’s top pitcher after the graduation of Bryner. She pitched in eight games this season, and posted a 5-0 record.  She had 34 strikouts and a 1.41 ERA in 34 innings of work, and threw a no-hitter in a four-inning mercy-rule shortened game, against Bentworth, Pa.  “Rachel played an awesome third base for us,” Parks said.  “She is very quick and very strong. And I’m very, very anxious and excited to watch her grow into the player she will be. She is one of a kind, and she is a great kid, and she is fun to coach. Once she matures, she will be a college-level player, maybe a Division I player.

Nitro players on their High School Teams

These Nitro 99 girls will always have a special bond.

Rachel Rousseau playing for University High, Morgantown, WV

Rousseau throws no-hitter for UHS

BENTLEYVILLE, Pa. — Rachel Rousseau was nearly perfect Saturday, May 3.

She was still good enough to lead the University High softball team to a 13-0 win against Bentworth, Pa.

The freshman pitcher hurled a no-hitter, walking just one batter that kept her from recording a perfect game.

The game was stopped after four innings, because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Rousseau also doubled in a run in the first inning to help the Hawks’ offense.

It was the second game of a doubleheader, in which UHS also won the first game, 11-3.

Rousseau was busy then, too, collecting a triple and two doubles.

Tessa Chafin knocked in two runs with a single in the first inning to get the Hawks going in the first game.

The second game belonged to Rousseau on the mound. She recorded no strikeouts, but the UHS defense was solid behind her.

Ashley Compton went 2-for-3 in the second game with an RBI and two runs scored.

University High's Rousseau pitches 6-0 softball win, homers twice

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Rachel Rousseau pitched a two-hit shutout, hit two home runs and drove in three runs as University High beat Uniontown, Pa., 6-0, in softball Friday, March 28.

Conner Assif also had two of the Hawks’ eight hits, and drove in a run.

Hawks take down Southern Maryland, Fort Hill

MORGANTOWN — The University High softball team scored 10 runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 13-run victory late Saturday, April 12. They beat Southern Maryland, 14-1.

Rachel Rousseau racked up four RBIs on four hits for UHS. Alexa Greene allowed only three hits in six innings, with four strikeouts and four walks.

Rachel Rousseau racked up four RBIs on four hits for Hawks. She doubled in the first inning and singled in the third and sixth innings.

Rousseau pitched a seven-inning one-hitter in the Hawks’ win over Fort Hill, Md.

She struck out eight and walked three in the 4-1 victory. Rousseau also had two hits.

Hawks gets 8 strikeouts from Rachel Rousseau in 4-1 win over Fort Hill, MD. A great effort by Rachel Rousseau hoisted Hawks to a 4-1 win in seven innings over Fort Hill, MD on Saturday at Oakland, MD. Rachel pitched lights out for Hawks. Fort Hill, MD managed just one hit off of the Hawks' pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked three and struck out eight during her seven innings of work. Rachel led Hawks' offensive threat, as she got on base three times in the game. She singled in the first inning and doubled in the third inning.

Rousseau lifts UHS past MHS in softball

MORGANTOWN — Rachel Rousseau could have pointed to her heroic moment at the plate as the key to her University High softball team’s 6-5 come-from-behind win against Morgantown, on April 21, at Mylan Park.

Rousseau smashed a line-drive single into center field to drive in Morgan Slavensky for the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Yet Rousseau credited something else for UHS’s 10-3-1 record and its second victory against the school's crosstown rival this season.

“Yeah, our batting is good,” she said. “But you can score one run per game and that’s fine, but it all depends on your defense. There are other good hitting teams out there, and you have to have the defense to be there for you.”

Just half an inning previously, the young Hawks’ defense made that stand.

After five innings and five leading changes, the Mohigans (10-9) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth.

After a UHS error, a bunt hit by Kaylee Anderson and a walk by Heidi Hormell, MHS had the heart of its lineup up, threatening to bust a 5-5 tie wide open.

“It was really intense,” Rousseau said. “Honestly, we just had to believe in each other and we had to relax. Because once you start getting tensed up and you get that adrenaline going, you have to tell yourself you need to calm down, you need to breathe, just make these plays, do what you can play your best.”

UHS first baseman Alexa Greene snagged Devan Perdue’s solid line drive then fired the ball to third to Rousseau, who completed the double play to get the Hawks out of the jam.

Scarlett Stein playing for Jeannette

Softball: East Feature Athlete - Jeannette's Scarlett Stein

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on Monday, 12 May 2014 12:15 pm.

Name: Scarlett Stein
High School: Jeannette
Grade: 9
Sport: Softball

Background Info: Jeannette captured its second consecutive section title this season and one of its biggest contributors was one player who was not even around for the section title last season. Freshman Scarlett Stein enjoyed a breakout campaign this year, batting close to .600 while leading the team in RBIs. She started the season batting eighth in the lineup before moving to the three hole. In a section-clinching win versus St. Josephs, she was 3 for 3.

Coach Zac Karas said: "We moved her to third and she is still crushing the ball. She is really coming into form. She can really hit the ball. It took her a few games to get rounding into form but she is definitely doing it now. She really just hits the heck out of the ball."

Jeannette softball winning arms race in section

Jeannette (6-2, 6-0 Section 3-A) has the luxury of fielding three starting-quality pitchers, meaning Karas must decide each game whether he'll hand the ball to senior Nicole Hall, sophomore Mary Katherine Paulone or freshman Scarlett Stein.

Hall has earned the bulk of the work as a third-year starter, including shutouts against Ellis School and Vincentian Academy this season. But Paulone has more than proven herself after bursting on the scene by tossing a no-hitter in her first start as a freshman.

Although Stein has been used mostly in relief, Karas said he is just as confident in what the newcomer brings to the table.

Jeannette softball looks for new head coach, seniors to lead the way

Jeannette's pitching depth doesn't end there, however. Karas can also turn to freshman Scarlett Stein and count on her to deliver on the bump.

“It is a good problem to have,” said Karas. “Most single A schools do not have three pitchers they can rely on, so we are fortunate.”

Jeannette softball dominating early

Jeannette went on the road last Thursday to face Vincentian Academy. Senior Nicole Hall got the start and dominated throwing a two-hit shutout.

Once again, every Jeannette starter had at least one hit. Senior Brianna Crawford homered twice in the win and freshman Scarlett Stein also homered.

Paulone starts in left field and Stein plays second base when the two are not pitching. Stein was 13 for her last 16 at the plate entering this week. The new starters are sophomore center fielder Kayshaunna Crosby and freshman right fielder Kara Johnston.

Stein and Redman are leading the team, batting around .600 while Stein, Crawford and Redman lead the team in RBIs.

Trib Cup: Thomas Jefferson softball working toward turnaround season

Karcher also has the luxury of sending out two different batteries that, again, are young and have handled themselves well in the early going. Sophomore pitcher Lacie Lautner works primarily with senior catcher Amanda O'Toole, and freshman Alysa Fairman throws to sophomore Emily Scheidter.

“We're going to work with each of our young pitchers and get them to feel comfortable on the mound every time we send them out,” Karcher said. “Lacie's pitched some varsity before so she knows what to expect, but Alysa recently made her debut and I'm proud of how she handled herself.”

Norwin softball motivated after non-playoff year

After spending the majority of last season with one primary pitcher, Norwin boasts more depth at that position. Senior Maddy Miller returns and will be joined by junior Hannah O'Block. Phipps said freshmen Danielle Churba and Johnna Karas may also pitch, and both could earn spots in the regular lineup as well.

Nitro 99 tie for 5th at Laser Nation by Invitation tournament out of 48 teams

The nitro girls continued their fine play this season at the Laser Nation by Invitation tournament.  The girls won their pool going 5 and 0 and earned a 1st seed in bracket play.

The girls carried their fine play during pool games into bracket play on Sunday.  The girls earned a first round bye as a 1st seed and their first elimination game was a matchup against a local team: Team Pennsylvania.  The girls battled to win the game 10 to 5. The girls second elimination game was against a team from Michigan: Michigan Outlaws Black.  The girls cruised to an 11 to 1 victory over the Outlaws. The win moved the girls into the Quarter Finals (only 8 teams).  The girls would again be matched up against a local team: TFM Rebels.  The girls played a good game but lost 4 to 1.  The Nitro coaches are very proud of the girls fine play this weekend. The girls were 5 and 0 in pool play and went 2 and 1 in elimination/bracket play.

Nitro Bernard started the 2013 outdoor season as they finished the 2012 12U season and how they began their 14U fall season, making it to the championship game. The girls have made it into championship games in three of their first four 14U tournaments they have entered since moving to 14U. The girls were looking forward to playing Team PA Morrison in the final game however both coaches decided to err on the side of caution with the field and didn't play the final game. On Saturday the girls won their pool by going 3 and 1, only losing a close game to the Predators 3-2. On Sunday the girls were eager to play their first game, it was a rematch with the Predators. They beat the Predators 6 to 0. In the semi-finals the girls played the Shock. Under wet conditions the girls battled for a 5 to 1 win. Unfortunately the championship game was not played but both teams are very proud of their girls’ fine play this early in the year. Great job Nitro 99 and best of luck to all the teams that played in the tournament this season!
