Congratulations South Orange/Maplewood (Black) - DISTRICT 12 CHAMPS!!!
In one of the most exciting well played 11u district championship games ever played South Orange Maplewood scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th to defeat Millburn 4-3. It seemed like a daunting task being down 3-1 entering the final frame. Millburn had only allowed 2 runs in 5 games leading up to the championship thanks to some excellent defense and the shut down pitching of Peter Gula and Matt Dorfschnieder. South Orange had been an offensive juggernaut throughout the tournament scoring in double digits in 4 of their 5 games. In the final inning they lead off with a walk and a single and Peter Nolet nearly hit an opposite field HR to score the first run. Then tournament MVP Reid Evans hit a line drive up the middle to tie the game. After advancing to third base Reid Evans stole home on an attempted pick off as the catcher of the tournament Ben Pampush of Millburn recieved a pitch and rifled the ball behind Evans who was caught off third. When asked if he planned on stealing Evans said "No, but i knew i was dead at third so i just took a shot and luckily it worked out". He slid in safely and the game ended.
South Orange used aggressive base running and explosive bats coupled with great defense and solid leadership. Henry Kraham pitched the championship game and got the win. He also lead all tournament players with highlight plays and heads up decisions, he has a tremendous baseball IQ and is very fun to watch. Reid Evans was named tournament MVP pitching his team to 2 wins hitting two HRs to dead center field and hitting the fence a couple other times, He caught the championship game and threw out 2 runners.
Both teams were fun to watch its hard to believe they are only 11 and will definitely represent District 12 very well in the State Tournament that begins this week in Matawan.

Thanks again to all the Volunteers on helping us run a very successful tournament

Tournament Off to Great Start !!!
The 2011 11u District 12 Championship is off to an exciting start. Four teams are still undefeated and Summit and Mountainside will finish off the second round of games tonight.

We have seen some terrific pitching and defense. Because of that all teams are still mathematically alive for a playoff position. No teams has yielded more then 14 runs in two games. A tournament record over the first two rounds.

In yesterdays action Millburn got the day started with a well played 6-0 win over South Orange Maplewood Red. Matt Dorfschneider became the first player to hit a HR in the tourney when he hit a bomb over the left field fence in the third. He also started and got the win on the mound not yielding any hits in the first 3 innings.

Game two gave us our best game so far as S.O.M Black outlasted Westfield White 5-4 in an extra inning contest. S.O.M received a great performance by Reed Evans who pitched 5+ strong innings and hit a Deep HR over the CF fence estimated at 230 feet. Westfield came back and scored a run each in the 5th and sixth inning to tie the game up. It was a real gutty performance. Westfield lost one of its star players as Jake Valla Berra took a line drive off the hand while pitching the second inning and left for the remainder of the game but the team rallied and just came up a little short.

In game three the host Springfield Minutemen overcame a sloppy fielding performance to outduel Westfield Blue 4-1. It was a very well pitched game by both teams. Adam Wuest got the win and Joe Kastner came on in the 5th to shut the door and earned the save.

In the nightcap Cranford beat a game Westfield Gray team 5-2 in yet another well played game. Cranford coming off playing a DH earlier in the day received an excellent pitching performance from Matt Perino who pitched a complete game to put Cranford at 2-0 for the tournament. Ryan Palmer pitched very well in defeat for the Westfield club.

Tonight Summit will play Mountainside to finish off the second round of games and in the nightcap Warren will play Westfield Blue in a game that could have playoff implications.
