The Jersey Seminoles are extremely pleased to announce that former FDU standout and Hall of Fame inductee, Steve Dembowski, will manage the Noles 16u team. Coach "Dembo" brings a wealth of playing, coaching and scouting experience to the Noles program. During his last three seasons at FDU Steve led the Knights in doubles, stolen bases, walks, hit by pitch and on base percentage. In his senior season he led the nation in on base percentage with an unbelievable mark of . 712, while only striking out four times all season. He also finished second in the nation with 27 stolen bases and set NCAA records for being hit by pitch. After his playing days Steve went on to become an infield coach at FDU, a scout for the Olympic team and a scout for the Cincinatti Reds.
"We are thrilled to have Steve join the Seminoles program" said Seminoles President Rick Sanchez "we've known each other since our college playing days and no one played the game with as much intensity and desire than Dembo. He brings that same intensity, enthusiasm and desire as a coach and I am thrilled for our young men who will get the opportunity to be coached and trained by a former Divsion I college coach and MLB scout. Can Seminoles Win National Tournaments?
February 17, 2012
I'm often asked "Coach you are a small Bergen County team do you really think you can win some of these national events with teams from Texas, Florida, Arizona and California". The bottom line is this; I go into every tournament thinking we can win it. I definitely know that no one is going to out work us this off-season and I certainly know that we will be ready to compete with the best of them. However to win some of these events and tournaments a lot of things have to go your way.
We should also point out that our ultimate goal is not necessarily winning a particular game. Now don't get me wrong, when we step between the lines we are going after it and going hard. However, the ultimate goal is to get these boys recruited.
What I mean by that is for instance, let's say we are playing a top team in a semi-final game and our pitcher pitches 3 shutout innings, strikes out 5 of 6 batters and is in total control; well he's coming out of the game. Now some may say that's crazy and I guess you would be right if you are talking about winning that one particular game but that young man on the mound just showcased in front of a number of schools. He peaked their interest and was impressive, my job is to get him out of there. Similarly, if one of our position players is 3 for 3 with two extra base hits, he's done, he just showcased. You don?t leave a player in there to potentially do something negative that could possibly dissuade a college coach's interest. That's the difference when you run a showcase team in the best interests of the players.
Undoubtedly this season you will see pitching rotations that are based on college coach's interests and availability and these may not necessarily coincide with the best interests of winning that particular game but it will be all about getting players recruited. It's a fine line because winning teams attract college coaches but so do players with established college interest. Bottom line, the coaching staff will do everything possible for each and every one of our players to get exposure and we as a team will get after it to try and win every game we play.
So to ultimately answer the question, yes I think we can compete with the best of them but the Seminoles are not just about putting trophies on our trophy case. I suppose if we were running this as business we would enter tournaments with lesser competition and post pictures of trophies and winning tournaments to give the illusion of what a great team this was. However, we are not about trophies, we are about providing opportunities and exposure to our players. I guess the proof will be in the pudding, whether we get our players recruited or not. We are certainly looking forward to an exciting season.
Noles Aggresive 2012 Showcase Schedule
February 10, 2012
"We've put together a very aggressive and competitive tournament schedule? said manager Rick Sanchez. "Our goal is to put the boys in front of as many college coaches as possible. Our coaches and I have sat together countless hours, we've spoken to many college and MLB scouts and have tried to take as much possible into consideration. This of course includes school and family life which is of utmost importance.
As such, we've tried to keep the schedule more local in June while the boys finish up school work, our peak travel period will be the month of July with venues in Florida, North Carolina and Maryland before heading closer to home and culminating the summer with the Perfect Game qualifier right here in our home state. What the coaches and I have tried to do is come up with the proper mix of events to give the boys exposure to national, regional and local colleges and universities. We will take a short break as the boys head back to school in September which coincides with the NCAA recruiting quiet period and then pick it right back up with a great Fall schedule.
The Fall circuit will be very important for a lot of players and local colleges. Many schools will be trying to finalize their 2013 recruiting class while getting a head start on the class of 2014. The boys will be facing some of the top players and teams in the country, there is no doubt about that, and there is no doubt in my mind that our players will rise to the occasion and compete very well. It?s going to be a very exciting season for these young men".

Noles Outduel Diamondbacks
April 24, 2010
The Jersey Seminoles outdueled the Diamondbacks in a 4 hour extra inning marathon to earn the 14-11 victory. Connor Brustofski pitched well in relief but miscues on the field led to four unearned runs in the seventh which extended the game to extra innings. AJ Gale picked up the victory pitching a perfect inning in relief including two strikeouts. Chris Gonzalez had a pair of hits including the clutch game winner. TJ Ward had a tremendous day at the plate with 4 hits, 3 stolen bases and 3 runs scored.
As exhaustion was setting in, there was no rest for the weary. The Noles went on to play an exhibition game against the Teaneck Terminators that had been scheduled due to the forecasted rain on Sunday. The Noles bats came alive again scoring 15 runs as the Noles opened up a 10 run lead after 5 innings of play. “It was good exhibition game for us” said manager Rick Sanchez “we had a chance to take a look at players in different positions and extend our pitchers with some extra work and get into deeper pitch counts. It was a very long day for the boys. I’m really pleased at how we’re swinging the bats. Scoring 29 runs in two games today on top our 24 run production our previous 2 tournament games is a great accomplishment for the team.” Chris Gonzalez had three hits and Mike Matteis and Mike Palestri each homered to power the offense.
Seminoles Impressive Finish at Diamond Nation Tournament
April 18, 2010
The Jersey Seminoles finished the final two games at Jack Cust’s Diamond Nation by outscoring their opponents in the final two games 24-3.
In game 2 the Seminoles downed the Mid-Hudson Tigers 8-1 behind the dominant pitching of Ryan O’Connor and Mike Meechan. The two southpaws were brilliant on the mound giving up only 4 hits and accumulating 10 strikeouts. Connor Brustofski and Chris Gonzalez each had a pair of hits and O’Connor had a big triple to break the game open.
In their third game after falling behind 3-0 in the first, the Noles bats game alive scoring 16 runs. Mike Meechan had the walk off base hit as the game was ended due to run differential rules with the final score 16-3. Mike Matteis picked up the win on the hill against Bobby Valentine’s New Canaan Fury Red. TJ Ward, TJ Witt and AJ Gale had a multiple hit game and Chris Gonzalez went 3-3 with 2 doubles and a home run to power the offense.
The Noles wound up ranked 5th out of the 16 team field. The game one loss prevented the Noles from moving on to the semi-finals. “The game one loss really took the starch out of us” said Coach Andy Gale “it was an ugly loss but it was great to see how the boys rebounded. It was very cold and playing conditions were difficult but they remained focused and played hard the rest of the way.”
Seminoles Down Jersey Bulldogs 15-2
April 11, 2010
The Jersey Seminole bats finally exploded as they pushed across 15 runs to defeat the Bulldogs 15-2 at Saint Joseph Regional on Sunday afternoon in Montvale.
As welcome as the run production was, the big story was the welcome return on the hill for starter Connor Brustofski and the solid pitching performance by Connor and Andy Gale in relief. Connor did not give up an earned run and struck out 6 Bulldogs in his four innings of work. AJ Gale was just as solid pitching one-hit ball over the final three innings with great command of his pitches and adding four strikeouts.
The Noles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Mike Matteis had a clutch 2 RBI double in the second to extend the Seminole lead to 6-1 and Jimmy Rodriguez had 2 hits including 4 RBI’s on the day. The big hit was his bases clearing triple to break open the game in the fifth inning. TJ Witt added another extra base hit in the seventh to plate 2 more runs.
It was a good performance for the Noles especially on the backend of the team’s first two losses of the season. After Saturday’s loss, the Seminole bats were silenced on Sunday morning as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the CP Diamondacks.
“It was good to see the boys bounce back the way they did” said manager Rick Sanchez “undoubtedly we played 2 very uninspiring baseball games against the CP Diamonbacks. We certainly didn’t play Seminole baseball in those two games. They took it to us and that’s a credit to them. I’m just happy to see how these young men reacted after the two losses. They just wanted to go back out there and battle. That’s exactly what you want to see in a ball club. I’ve always said this game is a game of failure but it’s how you handle that failure that will determine how successful you’re going to be. I think this ball club got a big boost from having Connor on the mound today. It was good to see him almost fully recovered from his hip pointer. I also can’t say enough about AJ Gale. He was in total control of all his pitches, had great velocity and used his off speed pitches very well. I’m looking forward to next weekend. It’s gonna be a real test for us.”
The Noles head into their first tournament of the season next weekend against some very good competition at Jack Cust’s Diamond Nation.
April 10, 2010
The Seminoles suffered their first league loss since their inception in 2009. They took a 13-1 drubbing at the hands of the CP Diamondbacks at Pope John High School in Sparta. It was a lackluster performance by the Noles riddled with errors and mental mistakes.
“Obviously not a good day for us” said manager Rick Sanchez “for some reason we were extremely flat today. Sometimes that happens but sometimes what really happens is that you take winning for granted. You can’t expect to just show up and have a team hand you a victory simply because you put your uniform on. What these boys need to learn is that you have to work hard every play, every at-bat and every pitch. You have to stay ready and be mentally focused or some team is going to really hand it to you and the Diamondbacks did just that. They deserved to win. They outplayed us in every aspect of the game; we didn’t look like we wanted to be playing baseball today. This game can be very humbling but the great part about it is that you get a chance to get back out there the next day and see what your made of. Let’s see if we learn from this and what happens tomorrow.”
The Seminoles complete the home and home set with the Diamondbacks on Sunday with an 11:30am start at Pershing Field followed by another league game against the Jersey Bulldogs at Saint Joseph Regional High School in Montvale at 4:00pm.
Seminoles Edge Pirates 1-0
April 3, 2010
In a classic early season pitching duel the Seminoles edged the Pirates 1-0 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for baseball. Mike Matteis and Jimmy Rodriguez combined for the one hit shutout. Matteis started on the hill pitching the first three innings before giving way to Rodriguez in the fourth. Rodriguez continued where Matteis left off holding the Pirates hitless allowing only a walk and a hit batsman while retiring the final 7 batters he faced to pick up the victory.
The Seminoles could not get their offense going as the Pirate pitching held them scoreless until the final inning. TJ Ward led off the final frame with a walk and then stole second. With two outs Chris Gonzalez delivered the clutch hit, a booming double to left center to drive in Ward with the winning run. It was a well played ballgame by both teams with strong pitching and defense highlighting the afternoon.
In the evening, the Seminoles took on the very talented Jersey Boyz in non-league action. On an unexpectedly frigid evening the two teams battled in a 3-3 ballgame until the sixth when the Boyz pushed across a couple of runs to edge the Noles 5-3. The Seminoles had their chances loading the bases in the sixth and putting the tying runs on base with none out in the seventh but could not get a timely hit in another well played ball game.
The Noles resume league action next weekend with a home and home set against the CP Diamondbacks and a single game against the Jersey Bulldogs.
Seminoles Sweep Bulldogs in Season Opener
March 28, 2010
The Jersey Seminoles opened up the 2010 Campaign with a doubleheader sweep of the Jersey Bulldogs.
In game one, Rich Sanchez and AJ Gale had a couple of big two-out hits to help the Seminoles jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Noles would go on to open up a 9-0 lead after six innings, in coasting to the 9-2 decision on a very cold Sunday morning. Mike Matteis started on the hill and pitched 3 shutout innings to gain the victory and AJ Gale closed out the ballgame. Chris Gonzalez had 3 hits and AJ Gale added a pair to pace the offense.
In Game two, Joshua Witherspoon and Rich Sanchez came up with some clutch two-out hits in the fourth inning to break open a one run game as the Noles would go on to win the ball game 5-2 and complete the Sunday doubleheader sweep. TJ Ward, Mike Meechan and Mike Palestri combined on the hill giving up one earned run on 4 hits over 7 innings. Ward picked up the victory and Palestri earned the save by pitching the final two frames without allowing a base hit and striking out three.
“We’re very pleased with the way the boys played. These were tough conditions to play under. It was very cold out there today and the rain during the second game made it even colder but the boys hung in there and played very well. Sometimes you just have to grind it out and they certainly did that today. We didn’t swing the bats as well as we know we’re capable of, but it’s very early in the season. We had some clutch hits when we needed them. Our pitchers did a great job and our defense was solid. Our catchers also did a great job behind the plate. It was a good start to the season” said the coaches.
The Noles go on to play a doubleheader next Saturday in Fairfield against the Fairfield Pirates.
Seminoles Down Panthers
March 21, 2010
The Jersey Seminoles defeated the Central Jersey Panthers 9-1 in their first exhibition game of the season. Seven Seminole pitchers took to the mound and all looked sharp as they prepare for the upcoming season. Overall the team played extremely well both offensively and defensively.
“It was great to finally have the boys get outside, they have been chomping at the bit to start the season” said manager Rick Sanchez, “overall the team looked good in their first outing. They’ve been working real hard during the off-season and are looking forward to finally starting our 2010 campaign. We have a lot of exciting baseball planned and if we all stay focused, continue to play hard and play as a team, it’s going to be a fun season. We have a great group of players and parents and I’m very much looking forward to the upcoming season.”
The Noles open up the 2010 season next Sunday with a doubleheader against the Jersey Bulldogs.

Jersey Seminoles Return from Florida State
January 3, 2010
The Jersey Seminoles returned from their winter workouts with the Florida State Seminoles. It was a tremendous experience for all the boys that were able to attend to be able to meet and be trained by legendary college coach Mike Martin, one of the most successful and winningest coaches in the history of NCAA baseball. The boys also received special hitting instruction from FSU Coach Mike Martin Jr. and pitching instruction from FSU Coach Jaimey Shouppe.
Director of FSU Baseball Operations, Chip Baker, was on hand to greet the “northern” Seminoles and ensure that they enjoyed their experience. One of the many highlights for the boys was having Mike Marin Jr. Invite the Seminole boys back to his home for an evening barbecue and his “special recipe” burgers. The real treat for the boys however was having personal hitting instruction from Coach Martin in his private lighted batting cage in his backyard. It was a great camp and a fantastic experience for the boys.
Our sincere gratitude to all the FSU coaches for this very special experience.
SEMINOLES CROWNED LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
November 15, 2009
The Jersey Seminoles culminated their perfect undefeated Fall League season by defeating the Ramapo Rangers 3-1 in the league championship finals. Perfect execution, timely hitting, good defense and outstanding pitching carried the Seminoles to victory.
The Seminoles struck first in the bottom of the first inning as TJ Ward led off the game with a booming double to left center field that just missed clearing the 340 ft. mark. Victor Guzman then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move TJ to third. Chris Gonzalez promptly followed with a ground ball to the right side of the infield to score Ward from third and the Seminoles led 1-0.
That score would stand as Ryan O’Conner held the Ranger bats at bay. In the bottom of the fourth the Seminoles would strike again. Mike Meechan led off the bottom of the inning by drawing a leadoff walk. Rich Sanchez promptly followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Meechan to second. That strategy seemed to have paid off as the next batter, Ryan O’Conner laced his second hit of the ballgame, a single up the middle, as Meecham raced around third and slid at home scoring what appeared to be the second run of the ballgame. However the umpire saw it quite differently and called him out erasing a crucial second run in a tight one-run ball game.
Now with two outs and O’Conner at second base on the throw home, AJ Gale strode to the plate. With the count at two balls and two strikes, AJ hit a towering drive, way up into the clear night’s sky. Back went the left fielder … way back … to the warning track … to the wall … looking up …. and when it finally came down; AJ’s shot had cleared the fence in left for a 2 Run Home Run! His teammates rushed to home plate to congratulate Gale and the Seminoles had a 3-0 lead.
That’s the way it would stay as O’Conner would continue to hold the Ranger bats at bay. In the sixth inning however, O’Conner would walk the first two batters he faced and manager Rick Sanchez decided to bring TJ Ward to the mound.
“In reality it was not a difficult decision” said manager Rick Sanchez “obviously to that point Ryan had been dominant and it’s always tough to take out a pitcher who’s been dominant and throwing a shutout, but Ryan’s pitch count was getting close to the limit we had established for him today. The Ranger’s clearly came in with a game plan to make O’Conner work hard and they did a good job in working some deep counts, getting some very good at bats and fouling off a lot of pitches. I had no hesitation however in turning the ball over to TJ Ward in that situation. He’d been doing it for us all season. Both TJ Ward and AJ Gale had closed out a number of games for us this Fall. Additionally TJ had beaten the Rangers as a starter during the regular season. I had all the confidence in the world giving the ball to TJ with the game on the line.”
“TJ is one heck of a player” added Coach Andy Gale “he wants the ball in those situations, and as a coach that’s what you want to see.”
TJ would walk the first batter he faced to load the bases, bringing up the clean-up hitter with the tying run at first however, TJ would induce a short fly to right for the first out of the inning. The next batter hit a bloop toward the right side of the infield that looked like it might drop in as it left the bat but first baseman Rich Sanchez made a beautiful play going back in short right for the second out. On the play, the runner at third tagged and scored, as Sanchez slipped on the muddy track. “In that situation we’ll trade a run for the second out every time” said coach Gale. TJ then struck out the next batter to end the inning and when it was all said and done TJ had pitched out of the bases loaded no out jam with the Rangers only scoring a single run.
In the seventh and final inning TJ Ward would strike out two more batters to end the ball game and give the Seminoles the season championship as the players rushed to the field to congratulate each other.
“Pitching was definitely key.” said General Manager John Ward "Ryan O'Conner was simply outstanding". O’Conner pitched 5 solid innings striking out seven batters to earn the victory and TJ Ward pitched the final two frames striking out three and earning the save.
League President Jim Monaghan was on hand to congratulate both teams on a great season and crown the Seminoles champions as each of the Seminole players received their championship medals.
“This was a great accomplishment for these boys” said manager Rick Sanchez “these boys came together in the early Fall in this our inaugural season as the Seminoles and they worked hard. They started as a bunch of individuals and became a team. A team where everyone contributed and everyone continued to work hard all season. As a manager I am extremely proud of them and not because we won the championship. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great accomplishment and to win against an established and respected club team like the Rangers is an honor. They are a very good team, with great players and coaches. But it wasn’t the winning that I’m proud of, I’m proud of the effort, the dedication and the way these boys played the game and conducted themselves both on and off the field. They were determined and dedicated to get to this point and succeed. I hope they carry this same attitude and determination in everything they choose to do in life because if they do they will always be winners”.
The championship game was only made possible through the tireless efforts of General Manager and Director of Field Operations, John Ward. John worked on the field from 7am to 4pm to get the field in playing condition after all the rain on Saturday. Very special thanks to John and all the fathers that came out today to help.
WAY TO GO NOLES! TEAMWORK=CHAMPIONSHIP!
Seminoles: Relax and enjoy the time off from baseball. Let’s plan on all of us getting back together as a team. Challenge yourselves to repeat as champions in the Spring. Let’s get ready to get back to work in January and remember, "Ballplayers are made in the off-season not during".
Jersey Seminoles Advance to League Championship!
November 8, 2009
In a see-saw battle the Jersey Seminoles battled the PC Crush into extra innings before edging the Crush 3-2 in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Dave Mozeika led off the inning with a base hit. After a walk to Mike Meechan, Rich Sanchez laid down a perfect bunt towards third to advance the runners and on the low throw to try and get Sanchez at first, Mozeika raced home with the winning run as the Seminole players poured onto the field.
It was a hard fought battle that was only made possible by the superb pitching of Ryan O’Conner and TJ Ward in relief. O’Conner started the ball game and did not give up an earned run, in six and one third innings of work, striking out 8 batters. TJ Ward took over on the mound in the seventh and pitched two innings of shutout ball to earn the win.
Mike Meechan had the big hit in the third inning driving in Noah Rosenberg and Chris Gonzalez to give the Seminoles a 2-1 lead. David Mozeika finished the game with two hits.
“It was a great ballgame” said manager Rick Sanchez, “both teams played exceptional baseball, this was a nail biter no doubt. I’m extremely proud of how these boys battled the entire ballgame. They refused to let down and gutted out the victory. This was truly a team win with great pitching, defense and good execution. What I’m even more proud of was the effort and enthusiasm. Two boys didn’t get in today’s game but they were out there helping the team and were just as important as the boys that did get in the game. I’m very happy for the boys because they’ve played hard all season to put themselves in this position”.
“It was a great day of baseball” added coach Andy Gale “the boys came to play baseball and this is what it’s all about. You play hard the entire ballgame. You don’t let one bad play or a bad at bat get you down, you look forward to the next play. Great job by everyone.”
Game two in the semi-final nightcap was just as exciting also going into extra innings with the Rangers also pulling out a one run ballgame defeating the Braves 7-6.
The Seminoles will host the championship game against the Ramapo Rangers on Sunday at 1pm.

Seminoles Spear Titans
October 31, 2009
TJ Ward pitched a superb complete game shutout facing just one batter over the minimum and not allowing a single base runner to reach second base. Ward gave up only 2 hits and struck out 11 in a dominating performance as he led the Seminoles to a 5-0 victory.
James Rangel had the big hit for the offense unleashing a bases clearing double to break open a 1-0 ballgame and power the Seminoles to victory.
The Seminoles remain undefeated at 6-0 in league play and look to extend the streak tomorrow afternoon against Blue Chip Baseball.
Mother Nature at it Again
October 25, 2009
Rain swept through the area yet again, forcing the cancellation of two more weekend games. Teams will be scrambling this week as they try to complete their scheduled league games heading into the final weekend of the season. The Seminoles will look to play three games this week and have offered all coaches concerned the option of playing any day and time during the week or weekend.
Seminoles Tomahawk Blue Chip 9-5
October 22, 2009
Thursday night the Jersey Seminoles, after spotting Blue Chip a 3-0 lead in the first inning, came back to win the ballgame 9-5.
TJ Ward and Nick Lamendola had two hits and scored two runs apiece as they set the table for a 2 run scoring hit from James Rangel in a 4 run third and Mike Meechan’s bases clearing triple in 3 run fifth. Joshua Rivera added a 2 run double in the sixth as the Seminoles opened up a 9-3 lead.
After the long layoff due to all the rain, the Seminoles used five pitchers in the ball game in order to get everyone some work for the upcoming weekend with games scheduled against the Suffern Titans and Blue Chip Baseball. Mike Meechan picked up the win in relief. The Seminoles improved their league record to 5-0.
Rain Washes Out Weekend
October 18, 2009
Rain once again creates havoc in league play as two league games were washed away this weekend. The Seminoles will look to re-schedule the game against Blue Chip this Thursday night at Pershing Field and hope to re-schedule PC Crush for the following weekend.
Seminoles Defeat Rangers to Continue Undefeated
October 11, 2009
TJ Ward pitched and powered the Jersey Seminoles to an 8-6 triumph over the Ramapo Rangers on a chilly Sunday night at Pulis Field in Franklin Lakes to help keep the Seminoles perfect in league action. TJ opened the game with a solo home run which was promptly followed by a triple by Chris Gonzalez in the first inning as the Seminoles took a 2-0 lead. In the second inning TJ hit his second home run of the night, this time a two run shot as the Seminoles opened up a 5-0 lead after two innings.
The Rangers would chip away at the lead making it a one run ball game but the Seminoles would use great execution and timely hitting to manufacture a few more runs and held on for an 8-6 victory.
“It was a gutsy performance on the mound by TJ” said Coach Andy Gale “we knew TJ was going into this game with a bruised right knee but he wanted the ball. We were concerned because it was his power leg and we were watching him closely. He did a great job”. TJ pitched the first four innings giving up only a single hit. He was relieved by Chris Gonzalez who pitched well in relief going 2 innings and striking out 4 batters. AJ Gale came on in the final inning with the tying runs on base and struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced to earn the save and preserve the 8-6 victory.
The Seminoles not only hit for power but also executed extremely well offensively by moving runners into scoring positions. Nick Lamendola, Ryan O’Conner and Alexis Peguerro all executed in sacrifice situations and TJ Witt executed a perfect suicide squeeze.
The Seminoles continue league action next weekend against Blue Chip and PC Crush.
Seminoles Down Morristown Nationals 4-3
October 10, 2009
The Jersey Seminoles scored 3 runs in the top of the third inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and held on to edge the Morristown Nationals 4-3 in a well played ball game by both teams.
The Seminoles utilized timely hitting, good execution and aggressive base running to score their runs as TJ Ward led the offense with 2 hits. However the story of the day was the pitching performance of Ryan O’Conner who was in control throughout his complete game performance.
“Ryan had total command of his pitches” said manager Rick Sanchez, “he hit his spots, changed speeds and had great movement on his fastball. The Nationals are a well coached team and a very good hitting team but Ryan kept them off balance all day. It was a good win for our young team especially considering that it was against an older 15U spring team and the current Cerbo Eastern Division league leaders.”
“OC” gave up only 1 earned run on 2 hits while striking out 9 batters over his 7 innings of work. The Seminoles continue their Fall season against the Ramapo Rangers in league action on Sunday night at 7pm in Franklin Lakes.
Seminoles Edge Braves 4-3 to Remain Undefeated
October 4, 2009
In a thrilling come from behind victory, the Jersey Seminoles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Jersey Braves 4-3 and remain undefeated in league play. “That’s why you play seven innings” said General Manager John Ward. With one out and the Noles trailing 3-2 in the last inning, AJ Gale worked out a walk and then stole second base setting up the stage for Alexis Pequerro’s game tying drive to right field. Then with two outs and no one on base Nick Lamendola reached on an error and Sean Falzon legged out an infield hit. On the play, Lamendola playing heads up baseball raced around second and slid safely into third with what would prove to be the winning run. The next batter TJ Ward, hit a hot smash in the hole at second which was bobbled by the second baseman and with TJ hustling on the play he beat out the throw to first as Lamendola scored the winning run and the Seminoles poured onto the field.
“It was a great comeback” said manager Rick Sanchez “I was very pleased to see how the boys reacted and fought hard in the last inning. We took advantage of a couple of opportunities and pulled the game out. However we would not have been in this position without some very solid pitching performances. Chris Gonzalez pitched very well giving up only 1 earned run and TJ Ward was simply outstanding in the final 3 innings.”
It was a well played game by both teams in a see-saw battle that was played in less than two hours. Chris Gonzalez started on the mound and pitched the first four innings giving up one earned run over 4 innings and striking out seven Braves. TJ Ward got a well deserved win in relief as he dominated the final 3 innings striking out 4 and retiring 8 batters in a row. The only batter to reach base was on an infield throwing error. It was a great win for the Noles.
The Seminoles continue their fall season next weekend against a very strong Morristown Nationals team in non-league action on Saturday and then face the Ramapo Rangers in league play on Sunday.
Rain Strikes Again
October 3, 2009
After all of general manager, John Ward’s hard work to make the field playable, Mother Nature struck again. After just 1 and 2/3 innings of play, the skies opened up on Saturday’s non-league game against the Rockland Wildcats and the game had to be postponed due to rain. As Yogi Berra would say “It was déjà vu all over again”. After a rough spring and summer of rain, cancellations and re-scheduled games this is the third game in four weeks of the short fall season that had to be postponed due to rain.
Seminoles Down Terminators 9-2
October 2, 2009
The Jersey Seminoles behind the solid pitching of Ryan O’Conner defeated the Teaneck Terminators 9-2 on Friday night at Pershing Field in Jersey City.
In the second inning Ryan O’Conner opened up the scoring with a timely 2 run single to give the Seminoles the lead. In the third, Chris Gonzalez had an RBI double and Dave Mozeika plated two more runs with another double as the Seminoles moved out to a 5-0 lead in coasting to the 9-2 victory.
Ryan O’Conner pitched the first five innings and AJ Gale closed out the final two frames to preserve the victory. Chris Gonzalez and TJ Witt each had two hits to pace the balanced hitting attack. The Noles are now 2-0 in league play as they head into Sunday’s matchup against the Braves.
Mother Nature Strikes Again
September 27, 2009
After postponing opening day of the Fall season, rain once again cancelled league action on Sunday as the Seminole game vs. the Teaneck Terminators was postponed on account of rain. The Seminoles did manage to get some baseball action on Saturday night in an exhibition game against a very good Jersey Boyz team. The Noles bats were shut down by outstanding pitching. The Boyz scored one run in each of the first four innings taking a 4-0 lead after four and cruised to the shutout victory. Chris Gonzalez started on the mound and took the loss. The Seminoles will look to reschedule the league game this coming Friday.
Seminoles Win Opener 13-4
September 20, 2009
The Jersey Seminoles began their inaugural Fall season with an impressive 13-4 victory over the South Rockland Blue Storm at Pershing Field in Jersey City.
The Noles didn’t waste any time in grabbing the lead. In the first inning, TJ Ward and Nick Lamendola opened up the season with back to back hits and with two outs David Mozeika and Rich Sanchez delivered RBI singles to give the Seminoles a 3-0 lead as the Noles never looked back.
Ryan O’Connor started the game on the mound and pitched 4 solid innings, giving up no earned runs while striking out five and leaving the ballgame with a 9-1 lead. AJ Gale pitched two solid innings of relief and Alexis Peguerro closed out the final inning which was highlighted by spearing a hard comebacker and from the ground starting a 1-6-3 double-play to end the ballgame. TJ Ward, Chris Gonzalez, Dave Mozeika and AJ Gale each had two hits to lead the Seminoles’ offense.
“It’s always great to win a ball-game but more importantly, we played solid baseball. We took what the opposition gave us, got solid pitching, some timely hitting and we executed defensively, including two double plays” said manager Rick Sanchez, “We made a couple of physical mistakes and that will happen, that’s part of the game but we remained focused and mentally stayed in the game, hustled and played hard throughout the entire contest. It was a team win and everyone contributed, it’s a great way to start the season”
Seminoles Impress in Final Tune-Up
September 19, 2009
In preparation for their Fall season, the Jersey Seminoles played an exhibition game against the Dumont X-Factors on Saturday afternoon in Cresskill. It was the first game action for this young team in their inaugural season. “It was important for as coaches to see the boys in game situations” explained the coaches, “while we’ve had a few workouts this is the first time for some of the boys to get on the mound or in the batters box since the summer season and certainly a first all around as Seminoles. We also wanted to challenge the boys and when the opportunity to play an experienced 14U Spring tournament team like the X-Factors arose, we jumped at the opportunity. Coach John does a great job with the X-Factor club and always has a very competitive team”.
After spotting the X-Factors a four run lead in the first inning the Seminoles battled back to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Trailing 6-4 in the final inning, Nick Lamendola came through with a clutch 2 run single to tie the ball game and send it to extra innings. The game would continue tied until the tenth when the Seminoles scored a run to take the lead but the X-Factors would get two in the bottom of the frame to end the ballgame.
Chris Gonzalez had 3 hits and David Mozeika and Dante Cieri added two hits apiece to pace the offense. Victor Guzman, Chris Ortiz, Alex Lopez, Mike Meechan and TJ Ward all saw action on the mound. “This was a great workout for us” said manager Rick Sanchez “everyone played extremely well; we got a number of good at-bats and some quality innings on the mound. Defensively the boys played extremely well. On a number of occasions we faced the winning run at third with less than two outs and got out of some very tough spots with good defense and quality pitching. All the pitchers pitched well especially TJ Ward who came into a tight spot and kept us in the ballgame. If the boys continue to play this way we’re going to see some good baseball and it’s going to be a fun Fall season. What’s most impressive is the attitude in the dugout and how quickly the team has come together. I think we’re ready for Opening Day.”
The Seminoles face the South Rockland Blue Storm in the season opener on Sunday.
