The Red Wings won the championship in an exciting double-header -vs. the Mud Hens.
The Red Wings went thru the winner's bracket, undefeated in the playoffs until Wednesday night. The Mud Hens had one loss, and were playing in the loser's bracket.
Game #1 was all Mud Hens. They came out strong, and mercied the Red Wings in the top of the 5th inning by a score of 14 - 6. The Mud Hens had a couple of home runs, plenty of singles, strong pitching, crisp fielding, and caught nearly every fly ball the Red Wings hit in the outfield. For the Red Wings' side, it looked like this was going to be a terrible evening.
After a 10 minute intermission, Game #2 started, with both teams having one loss...and it turned out to be all Red Wings. The game was over in the bottom of the 4th inning with a final score of 11 - 1. Grant Nelson hit a bases-loaded double in the 3rd inning to score a couple runs. Jack K. was the Red Wings closing pitcher, and he struck out the Mud Hens (1,2,3) in the last inning.
Coach Peterson was pretty choked up after the game, considering the team played to the level he saw in the kids all season. It was remarkable that the Red Wings regular season record was 6 - 10, but they tore thru the playoffs by playing baseball at a completely new level. These kids had it in them, but it was Coach Peterson who brought it out of them.
