Wow, what a ride. 25 years of Great Falls Softball can really take its toll.  I would like to thank each and every dog that has come through the pound over the past 25 years for making my softball career a memorable one. From the Goosetown camp-outs to JK making a point at the Bismarck Hooters, It was all good! Now to Nationals! Man did we surprise some teams in Mandan. If I would have known what I know now as far as player pick ups, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It is a good feeling when you do something the right and win while you’re doing it. Now, back to the tournament! We went 4-2 placing us 7th for wins and losses and sent some good teams home on Saturday. You guys were phenomenal! I would like to point out a few glaring concerns. First are Deano’s and Kevin.G’s strike-outs while they didn’t have to wear pinky they still need to settle up and I believe the 12th of September would perfect. Secondly, I would like to thank Rick for his patience. I do feel bad about not getting him more at bats or field time. This is something I anguished over for the whole tournament.  So, thank you Rick for being the essence of what an Old Dirty Dog is and that is a “Team Player”.

As most of you were aware their was a tournament All American first and second team selection as well as a defensive MVP and tournament MVP. Only those teams that played a minimum of 5 games qualified. Well as you may have noticed their wasn’t a dog anywhere to be seen on that list. So, I have decided to make my selections for who I felt should have been on the tournament All American team. My first team All American Selections are John Kelly, Chuck Somers, Mark Jarvis, Kevin Schroeder and Jason McBee. My second team All American selections are Kevin Grantier, Mike Churchill, Steve Hatchner, Tim Kuntz, Norm Vercolen, Rick Coster, Dean Higginbotham. I would give my defensive MVP to John Kelly for obvious reasons the kid is shit hot! Finally the Tournament MVP will go to Mr. Chuck Somers. The man is just one of the best pitchers that I have had the honor to play with.

So, this is it. No more line-ups, finding players, paying fees, getting uniforms or hanging out and just chillin. I will not lie that is what I will miss the most (Chillin). So, keep up the tradition and do it the only way an Old Dirty Dog knows how, and that’s Doggy Style. Later dogs.

BACK ROW: Kevin Schroeder, Frank English, Steve Hatchner, Chuck Somers, Tim Kuntz, Russ McKinney
FRONT ROW: Jason McBee, Ed Harrision, John Kelly,  Norm Vercolen, Dean Higginbotham, Mark Jarvis

That was a really fun tournament. As has been with ODD for the last 3 years we placed in the top 2 in another tournament. While it was not first place 2nd in the Men's +36 C division isn't bad. Especially when you know that the team that beat you was very deserving. Great tournament dogs. Another first in dogdum. No one struck out. I can't remember the last tournament when we didn't have someone strike out. I guess I need to hand out tournament biscuits. Well I'm giving this out from my soul. The state biscuit goes to each and every one of you dogs. You have made these last 3 years a joy and I will never forget it. Just little more information to y'all. Even though Norm, Frank, John and I are retiring. The dogs will be left in capable hands. With Chuck and Tim holding the leash the dogs will proceed forward and piss off another generation. Thanks guys and best of luck next season.
TJ's Can-AM Tournament

Hey dogs, we put another tournament victory under our belts. Even though their were only 8 teams in the tournament. It was still fairly competitive and fun. Although 6 games in a day was a bit much for old farts like us. Our road to victory went down like this. We defeated 8-Ball Octane Men’s C, Lost to TJ’s Miken men’s C, beat OP Men’s D in the round robin. This gave us a 2-1 record and the number 2 seed for the single elimination. In game one we played and defeated Klinefelters men’s D, which set us up with UAS Dirt men’s B which we beat in a very close game. The championship game came down to ODD and the Strokers men’s C who were undefeated up to this point. The first 4 innings went back and fourth until we started hitting and hitting a lot. We finally were able to get a large enough lead to fend of the Strokers finally charge of which Chuck struck out the last batter on a nasty knuckler thus giving the Old Dirty Dogs the 2009 Can-Am (for the record their were no Canadian teams in the tournament). Now it comes down as to who gets the biscuit? After some deep and some dark thoughts and of course several brews I have decided to give it to three dogs. First biscuit goes to the oldest of the dogs. Yep you guessed it Mr. Delicious himself, 3rd baseman John Kelly. John’s defense in the championship rounds was truly a site to see. Next biscuit goes to our newest dog Mark Jarvis who’s hitting was what the dogs needed. Finally, I would be a fool not to give this last biscuit to our lead hound Chuck Somers we had batters baffled with his curve ball and knuckle ball assault. Oh I almost forgot about our newest queens to be placed in the Team Queen Hall of Fame. Our first inductee is Ed Harrison. Special Ed went down as most of those that came before him, on a foul out. Next was a bit of a surprise. But, believe it or not Stormin Norman Vercolen struck out looking. It was a shocker, and even though we didn’t get a picture (this will be taken care of) Norm was a good sport and put on pinky. Stay tuned for the digitally enhanced version of Norm in pinky. One last thing,  I would like to thanks all the dogs for the never sat dies attitude you displayed all during this tournament. It was truly a blast. Next up +36 State in Billings.

6th Annual Keith Thompson/Ron Corr 35 Tournament.

Great weekend dogs we really played some great ball. We did find out a few thinks about our team this weekend. We aren’t a B team and that the dogs still got it. As those of you found out in Missoula we were without pinky. This was due to Mr. Jarvis unavailability last weekend. So, we had to improvise. Unfortunately, John (Mr. Delicious) Kelly was on the short end of the deal. The bad part is that John struck out; the good part the fear of striking out and having to wear our interim punishment made us much better hitters thus allowing no other dogs to strike out. Here is a quick run down;  we turned 8 double plays (6 on Saturday), we made an 11 run comeback in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs, and we made it to the Championship game of the B division, and lost to Boomers (folks, theirs a reason their called boomers. So without further ado the tournament biscuit goes to the Old Dirty Dogs. You guys pulled together and never quit. You should the other teams why we play so well together.
