Welcome to the home of the
Orleans Blues Major Bantam

|
Blues battle to the very end
For the Blues the end came late in the overtime period of the Tournament of Champions semi final.
The game was an epic battle between the Blues and the Blackhawks.
The Blues scored late in the first to take a 1 to 0 lead (Jordan got the goal). However, the Blackhawks tallied two in the second to take a 2 to 1 lead going into the third. Jordan sent the game into overtime with his second of the game (Chris assisting) with just 5 minutes remaining.
The overtime period featured a 3 on 3 format. Both teams had several scoring chances. Aaron L was called on time and time again to make big saves. However, the Blackhawks managed to finally score one to win the game.
In their third game of the tournament the Blues faced the Casselman Predators. The Blues needed a win to have any hope of advancing to the tournament's playoff round.
The Blues spotted Casselman a 1 to 0 lead midway through the first period. However they bounced back scoring 6 unanswered goals.
Alex T and Chris each scored a pair. Jordan also scored. (the game sheet awards the 6th goal to a number that doesn't exist in the Blues line-up...we'll check with the players to see who scored and update this note). Conor (3), Simon, Jordan and Chris were credited with assists.
The Blues won one and tied one on day one of the Tournament of Champions.
In their first game the Blues faced the Mississippi Thunder Kings. MTK had finished the regular season at the top of the league standings so the Blues knew they would have to be in good form. Despite the early hour (you have to leave Orleans pretty early to be in Carleton Place for 7:30 am), the Blues came ready to play. The game was even in all aspects - they had 20 shots on goal, we had 20 shots on goal. They took 3 penalties, we took 3 penalties. They scored 2 goals, we scored 2 goals.
Alex T and Frederick scored for the Blues. Andrew, Frederick, Alex T and James picked up assists. Aaron L was very steady in the Blues net.
In game 2 the Blues took on the Renfrew Timberwolves. It took the Blues a period to find their game against the scrappy Renfrew team but after a 1 to 1 first period, the Blues went on to skate away with a 6 to 1 victory.
Alex T, Kyle S, Jordan, Eric, Aaron B and Conor were the Blues goal scorers. Assists were awarded to Alex T, Chris (2), Kyle S, Eric (2), Alex G, Conor (2), Aaron B, Frederick and Jake. Once again, Aaron L was solid in the Blues net.
Blues to compete in Tournament of Champions
The 2009 Ottawa Valley Tournament of Champions for Bantam and Midget teams takes place April 2 - 5 in Carleton Place.
The Blues are one of the 12 bantam teams. The Blues round robin schedule is as follows:
Thursday April 2
8:30 am, arena 2, Blues (visitors) vs. Mississippi Thunder Kings
Thursday April 2
1:00 pm, arena 2, Blues (home) vs. Renfrew Timberwolves
Saturday April 4
8:30 pm, arena 1, Blues (visitors) vs. Casselman Predators
Blues valiant in defeat
In the three games of their semi-final series, the Blues lost to Russell just once. Unfortunately that wasn't enough to advance.
In game 3 of the series the Blues battled more than just the Rats. (hmmmm.... we weren't aware referees had the discretion to witness but "choose not" to penalize punches to the head). But alas, I digress.
Once again the Blues gave the first place Rats all they could handle and more. The game that was back and forth ended in a 5 to 5 tie.
Chris scored a pair while Kyle S, Alex G and Alex T also scored for the Blues. Jake, Chris, Aaron, Frederick, Conor and Jordan were credited with assists. Once again, Aaron L was solid in the Blues net.
The Blues now get a well deserved rest during the March Break before returning to the practice ice to get ready for the Tournament of Champions in April.
Blues drop tough one to Russell
In game 2 of their series the Blues showed again that they can compete well against the Rats.
Unfortunately, as is some times the case.... a bounce here, a bounce there...final score - Rats 5, Blues 1. Chris scored the Blues goal.
We'll get 'em in game 3!
Blues push Rats to a tie
Statistically, Russell was the best team in the league this year. They had the most points, the most wins and the fewest losses.
Fortunately the Blues aren't a team that fusses much about statistics.
Thanks to a total team effort and exceptional goaltending the Blues battled the Rats to a 1 to 1 tie in game 1.
Alex G scored the Blues goal with Eric and Kyle S picking up the assists. Aaron L was terrific in the Blues net.
Game 2 goes Sunday afternoon at the Earl Armstrong arena. Game 3 will be played in Russell on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
ROUND 2 - Blues vs. Rats
The Blues next opponent in this year's playoffs are the Russell River Rats.
Game 1 will take place Thursday March 5, 8:30pm, in Metcalfe.
The Metcalfe arena (also known as the Larry Robinson Arena)is located at
2785 Albert St. (Eighth Line), Metcalfe, ON K0A2P0
Game 2 will take place Sunday March 8, 4:30 pm, Earl Armstrong arena.
BLUES ELIMINATE RAMS!
Woo hoo it's on to round two!
Over the past many years the Stittsville Rams have developed a reputation for being one of the best teams in the league and typically have played for the league finals. Not this year.
The Blues broke open a very close game in the third period scoring 4 unanswered goals en route to a 6 to 2 win. The win gave the Blues the four points needed to take the series.
Jordan scored a pair while Eric, Alex G, Alex T and Patrick also scored. Earning assists were James (3), Chris (2), Frederick, Conor, Chris, Alex G, Eric and Jake. Kyle C was solid in the Blues net.
The Blues will now have to wait for the conclusion of the other first round matches before their round two opponent is determined.
Blues Work their way to Win
Heading into the first game of the playoffs the Blues knew they were in for an uphill battle against Stittsville.
However, the Blues showed early that they were ready for the challenge. Just 13 seconds into the game Alex G scored. Simon and Eric assisted.
The Rams scored in the second to make it a 1 to 1 game going into the third period.
With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Jordan scored the winner with Alex T and Conor assisting. Aaron L was solid in the Blues net.
The series now heads to Orleans for game 2.
Blues open Playoffs vs Stittsville
Game 1: Friday February 20, 8:30 pm, Stittsville arena
Game 2: Sunday February 22, 6:30 pm, Manley arena
Game 3 (if necessary): Friday February 27, 7:00 pm, Stittsville arena
Blues end regular season on winning note
In their 30th and final game of the regular season the Blues took on the Cumberland Jr. Grads, in Navan.
The Blues came home with a 6 to 1 victory.
Eric and Chris each scored a pair while Conor and Andrew also scored. Simon and Conor recorded two assists. James, Chris, Alex T, Kyle S, and Jordan were also credited with assists. Kyle C was sharp in the Blues net.
The Blues now face Stittsville in the first round of the playoffs.
Blues edged by MTK
The Blues were on the road in Carleton Place, Tuesday night against MTK.
Despite a valiant effort, the Blues dropped a 3 to 1 decision to the Thunder Kings.
Frederick scored for the Blues with Thomas R and Alex T assisting.
Blues overcome Sting
while it took them a while to get going (like a period and a half), the Blues scored 4 times in the third period to beat the Ottawa Sting 5 to 2.
Conor, Alex T, Kyle S, Eric and Jordan scored for the Blues. Chris (2), Jordan (2), Thomas R, Aaron B, James and Eric recorded assists.
Kyle C was sharp in the Blues net and kept his team in the game with key saves at key times.
Blues and Senators tied at 3
In one of the least attractive games of the season, the Blues came back to tie Osgoode Richmond, 3 to 3.
Eric led the way with 2 goals and an assist. Chris scored the other goal. Conor and Jordan picked up assists.
Blues Blast Blazers
While going undefeated in their previous three games, the Blues had managed to score a total of only 4 goals in those three games.
However, on Friday night at the ORC, the Blues found their scoring touch overpowering Kanata 10 to 1.
Jordan led the way with 4 goals while Chris and Eric each scored twice. The other goal scorers were Alex G and Alex T. Blues recording assists included: Conor (2), Eric (3), Frederick, Simon, Jake, Thomas, Patrick, and Alex G. Kyle C was sharp in the Blues net when called upon.
All in all a good week for the Blues. Playing four games in five nights, the team picked up 7 out of 8 points. With the regular season quickly winding down and playoffs right around the corner, this is a good time to be playing well.
Blues tie MTK
In the league standings the Blues and MTK are separated by a mere one point.
There wasn't much separating the two teams on the ice Thursay night at the ORC as the game ended in a 1 to 1 draw.
Alex T (short handed) scored the lone Blues goal. Aaron L kept up the string of solid Blues goaltending.
Blues win another close one
The first challenge for the Blues on Wednesday night was just getting to the game. 15cm of freshly fallen snow coupled with the extra traffic congestion caused by the transit strike made for a long drive to Barrhaven.
Once the game began, the Blues took on a fiesty Nepean Raiders. The Blues scored the first goal and the last goal en route to a 2 to 1 victory.
Alex T and Aaron B scored for the Blues. Patrick and Conor picked up assists. Kyle C played a strong game in the Blues net.
Swweeet!
On Monday night spectators at the Earl Armstrong arena were treated to a classic Blues - Blackhawks game. There was hard skating, lots of hard hits and a few hard feelings.
And while some people will have long, sad drives to places like Embrun, Blues fans drove home to Orleans feeling mighty fine.
For the second time in two meetings, the Blues knocked off the first place Blackhawks. This time the score was 1 to 0. Jordan scored the Blues goal with Jake picking up an assist. Aaron L was well deserving of the shut out.
Blues ripped by Rats
In their game against Russell on Tuesday night, the Blues absolutely dominated the first period. However, the score at the end of one was 1 - 0 for the Rats.
In the second period, Russell scored 4 times. Ouch.
Final score was 5 to 1. Jordan scored the Blues goal with James and Patrick assisting.
Good Effort Results in Point for Blues
For the second time in a week the Blues were on the road against the Stittsville Rams.
The Blues worked their way to a 1 - 1 tie against the Rams. Alex G tipped a shot from Thomas for the Blues goal. Chris also picked up an assist.
In their last three games the Blues have shown that they can compete against the best teams in the league. In three games against the first and second place teams, the Blues won one, tied one and lost one.
Blues Beat Blackhawks
"A lot of character," "spirited play," "stronger team effort," "a game to remember against our rivals," are some of the things heard after tonight's game. The Blues, again taking a goodly number of penalties, came out on top of a tight contest. They came from behind in the third period to tie the game and went on to win 4-3. Go Blues!
Scoring for the Blues were Jordan, Aaron B., Eric, Kyle S., and assists contributed by Eric, Kyle S., Simon, Kyle C., and Chris.
Effort but still short!
The Blues endured a few too many penalties and came up short of a couple goals to match the Rams four. Jake and Chris scored for the Blues and Eric, Alex G., Connor and Jordan got assists. Final score Rams 4,Blues 2.
Blues comes up a bit short
In their third game the Blues knew that would need a victory to have any hope of advancing to the playoff round. Unfortunately, the best they could do against the Tri City Eagles was a 2 - 2 tie.
Jordan scored both goals. Conor picked up two assists and Chris another.
Jordan was named the Blues Player of the Game, by tournament officials.
In their second game the Blues faced the Whitby Wildcats. Whitby is a team strong in all apsects of the game. It was a case of the Blues encountering a better team (on this day).
Final score: Whitby 2, Blues 0.
Patrick was named the Blues Player of the Game, by tournament officials.
In their first game at the 5th Annual Capital Winter Classic Tournament, the Blues took on the Gananoque Islanders.
The two teams were well matched and the Islanders goalie was kept busy.
In the end, the Blues prevailed by a score of 2 to 1.
Eric, (Simon assisting), and Jordan (with Conor and Chris getting assists) scored the Blues goals.
Eric was named the Blues Player of the Game, by tournament officials.
Blues ring in New Year with a Win
the Blues played their first game of 2009 and got the new year off to a good start with a 3 to 1 victory over Kanata.
Chris and Alex G each had a goal and an assist. Eric scored the other Blues goal. Additional assists were recorded by Alex T, Conor, Thomas and Aaron L.
Santa Brings Blues a Victory
Going into Tuesday night's game against Cumberland, the Blues knew they would need a good effort to stay on the "nice" side of the "naughty or nice" ledger.
True to the spirit of giving, the Blues gave up the first goal of the game but came back and eventually overpowered the Grads, 5 to 2.
The line of Kyle S, Alex G and Eric combined for 10 points (Kyle: 1G - 2A, Alex: 2G - 1A, Eric: 1 G - 3 A). Chris scored the other Blues goal while Jake, Patrick and Jordan recorded assists.
With this being their final game before Christmas, the team wishes all Blues fans a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Blues Year!!
Blues tie MTK
In back to back games the Blues took on the team at the bottom of the league standings (Cumberland) and then the team at the top of the league standings (MTK).
The Blues gave MTK all they could handle and more battling to a 2 to 2 tie. Jake picked up a goal and an assist. Alex G added the other Blues goal. Kyle S also recorded an assist.
The Blues take on Cumberland on Tuesday night in their final game before Christmas.
Blues get back to work
Playing their first game in nearly two weeks the Blues looked a bit rusty in the early going against Cumberland.
However, they gradually found their stride and came away with a 6 to 2 victory.
Chris recorded a natural hat trick. Eric, Aaron B and Jordan socred the other Blues goals. Jake, Aaron B, Jordan, Thomas and Chris picked up assists.
Blues come up short in Final
The Championship game of the Senecal Tournament featured the Blues and Les Aigles de Gatineau. In a well played game, Gatineau had that bit extra and won the game 6 to 3.
Alex G, Alex T and Eric scored for the Blues. Kyles S had two assists while Eric and Thomas also picked up assists.
So, in two tournaments so far this season, the Blues have appeared in the finals both times. Bodes well for the future! Well done Blues.
Blues Advance to Tournament Final
In their third game of the tournament the Blues faced off against the Embrun Panthers.
While it took the Blues a while to get going, they eventually hit their stride and started hitting the Embrun net. Blues 7, Embrun 0 was the final score.
Andrew (2), Chris, Alex G, Alex T, Eric and Frederick did the scoring. Eric (2), Frederick (2), Klye S, Alex G, Andrew, Conor, Aaron B, Thomas and Alex T recorded assists. Kyle C earned his second shut out of the tournament.
A Very Good Friday
The Blues opened up play in the Roger Senecal Memorial Tournament with a pair of games on Friday.
In their first game the Blues took on the Smith Falls Bears. The Blues came away with a 5 to 1 victory. Conor scored twice while Eric, Jordan and James added singles. Thomas (2), Chris (2), Kyle S, Jordan, Eric, Andrew, Frederick and Conor picked up assists.
In their second game the Blues faced les Aigles de Gatineau. In a hard hitting affair, the Blues blanked les Aigles, 3 to 0. Kyle S, Jordan and Andrew were the Blues goal scorers. Eric, James, Conor, Alex and Simon contributed assists. Kyle C was solid in the Blues net to earn the shut out.
Coach Jeff imposed an early curfew (for players and parents) to have the Blues ready for a Saturday morning game against Embrun. A victory in that game will ensure the Blues of a berth in Saturday's final.

SUNDAY NOON
SOLID GOLD!!!
I have alerted my colleagues at the Canada Border Services Agency - in just a few hours a honkin' big championship plaque and a bunch of gold medals will be crossing the border into Canada!
Blues take gold!
On Saturday night, a number of us went to "scout" the Cornwall Colts as they played their final preliminary round game. The Colts were big, played hard and played with a bit of an edge. Like the Blues, they finished with an undefeated record.
Going into the Gold Medal Game, the Blues knew they would have to work hard, skate hard and play Blues hockey at its best. Most of the players had breakfast together and the conversation focussed on what it would take to beat Cornwall (there was also conversation about what Jake was consuming for breakfast but more about that some other time).
Coach Jeff wanted his team to get off to a fast start. The Blues came out and worked hard on every shift - every time Cornwall pushed, the Blues pushed back. Midway through the first, Eric scored the first goal. Jordan and James assisted. Less than two minutes later the Blues scored twice within 45 seconds. Kyle S and Eric scored those goals.
Cornwall scored with just over three minutes remaining in the first to cut the Blues lead to 3 to 1. However, The Blues responded (James getting the goal) to take a 4 to 1 advantage at the end of one period.
The second period was back and forth with both teams getting chances. According to the official scorer, the shots were even at 7 for the period. Kyle was strong and steady in the Blues net.
The Blues added another to make the score 5 to 1 which is what it was when the final buzzer went.
At that moment, the crowd erupted into jubilant celebration (well, crowd being the Blues players and coaches plus the 13 Blues family members who made the trip).
After commending their opponents on a game well played, the Blues lined up to receive their Champions medals. One by one their names were called. Then came the moment when the Championship plaque and Champions banner were presented. In an Olympic-like ceremony, Eric climbed the podium to receive the Olympic torch on behalf of his teammates.
What a weekend! There are so many reasons to be proud of our Blues. In addition to bringing back reminders of the tournament, we also bring back a life time of memories. Enjoy the moment. Heading to Kinburn on Tuesday night to face West Carleton will seem a bit ho hum, but we will have the spirit of Lake Placid still with us and "Champions" attached to "Orleans Blues Bantams". We will also carry a vivid memory of what is possible when a team plays and works as a team. Now, bring on the rest of the season!

SATURDAY 5:00PM
The Blues are going to the finals!
The Blues finished the round robin portion of the tournament with an overpowering 11 - 0 win over Hollis. A trio of Blues picked up hat tricks - Jordan, Kyle S and Eric. Alex and Conor scored the other Blues goals.
In tomorrow's final the Blues will take on the tough Cornwall Colts. It will take a top Blues effort to be victorious.
In the tournament's skills competition, the Blues showed that there are very good reasons why they have had a very good tournament (so far).
In the shoot out competition, Jordan was the winning shooter while Aaron was the victorious goalie.
Our relay team, composed of Andrew, Alex, Conor and Kyle finished a very close runner up. As a little something for the Blues to remember tomorrow, Cornwall went ahead in the relay race when one of our skaters was "nudged" off stride.
It turned out to be a miserable rainy day in Lake Placid. After the hockey portion of the day, the Blues entourage headed down Main Street for lunch at Quiznos. The entourage then went in different directions... some went shopping, some went sight seeing and some went for a nap. (I bought three dress shirts for less than $10 each!)
Saturday evening will feature calming, relaxing activities as the Blues get ready to go for the Gold!

SATURDAY 7:00 AM
The Blues area of the hotel is remarkably quiet this morning. Hmmm.
Last evening began with many of the Blues watching Team Canada lose a close 2 to 1 game, in overtime, to Sweden. Canada's women's team doesn't lose very often and I'm sure captain Haley Wichekneiser will rally her troops for tomorrow's tournament final.
Following the game we returned to the hotel for another delicious dinner. The menu featured roast pork, pasta and cheeseburgers.
After dinner we headed to the tournament party. This was a big social event for all of the participating teams. There was music, snacks and free cocktails for the first hour (this may explain some of this morning's quietness). We also watched a video of the tournament highlights (so far).
When the party closed down, a group of the Blues parents found a cozy quiet area where they discussed the challenges of parenting in the 21st century and other global issues of the day. They also talked about where to find the best bargains in Lake Placid. As well, they noted what celebrities they had seen in the area over the past few days.
For their part, the players did as they have done since we arrived and stayed together as a group - and isn't that what these trips are all about? They found their own quiet area and reportedly discussed the challenges of being a teenager in the 21st century. I should also note here that one of our teammates wasn't able to make this road trip. He is certainly not forgotten as he has been mentioned several times and we look forward to seeing him next week.
So with all of the socializing and celebrity watching that was going on last night, it seems that many of the Blues entourage are sleeping in this morning.
However, the reason we are here is hockey. Our opponents later this morning are the Hollis Cavaliers from Hollis New Hampshire. A victory will ensure the Blues of a berth in tomorrow's tournament final.
Following this morning's game some of the Blues will compete in a tournament competition featuring a team relay race and a shoot out.
***************************
FRIDAY 4:00 PM
In their Friday afternoon game the Blues took on the Clifton Park Eagles from Clifton Park New York. The Eagles were small but scrappy.
In the end, the Blues prevailed 6 to 1. Eric picked up the hat trick while Chris, Thomas and Alex G also scored. Conor, Jordan, James, Patrick and Frederick recorded assists.
Following the game, the team returned to the hotel for a pizza lunch.
Later today while some of the entourage are heading off to take in the sights of Lake Placid, a big group of us are heading off to watch our women's national team take on Sweden in the Four Nations Cup.
***********************
FRIDAY 9:00 AM
When registering for a tournament like this one you never have any idea of what the calibre of the opposition will be. You can face teams that look like the Stittsville Rams and other teams that don't.
The Blues opponents in their first game on Friday were the Greater Bridgeport Riverhawks from Shelton Connecticut. Bridgeport is not the Stittsville Rams.
The Blues dominated every shift of the game. Final score was Blues 15, Bridgeport 0.
After the game, Coach Jeff encouraged the players to put this game out of their minds as who knows what the next opponent will look like.
In terms of Blues stats for this game, lets just say some of our guys scored a bunch and our goalie wasn't very busy.
Now it's off to breakfast we go.
Why are there no Tim Hortons in Lake Placid??? Starbucks is ok but it's no Tims (in my humble opinion).
By the way... the player who forgot his helmet at home was able to borrow a helmet and played this morning. Thankfully Coach Brian, who arrived from work after our first game last night, had his helmet with him. It took a major overhaul of the helmet to make the necessary adjustments to make it fit the player's head but fortunately Trainer Glen was able to perform successful surgery - on the helmet, not the head! The poor helmet may never be the same again.
************************
FRIDAY 6:00 AM
The day feels a bit like the "good old" Initiation hockey days... having to be at a rink at 7:00 am.
A heavy mist hangs over Lake Placid as night is slowing turning to day.
The hotel seems pretty quiet.
I'm sure all of the Blues entourage retired for the evening at a decent hour. Mind you,I had heard something about analysis of game 1 happening over a beverage or two in the hotel lounge.
Good Morning America!
*******************
THURSDAY 9:00 PM
BLUES OPEN WITH A WIN!
In their first game the Blues may have had a bit of "opening game jitters". Perhaps it was playing on a "big" international ice surface, perhaps it was playing a different team in a different country, perhaps it was the news that a teammate had forgotten his helmet at home. (no, we couldn't believe it either). At about the midway point in the second period, Saranac Lake held a 2 to 1 lead.
However, the Blues seemed to settle down as time went on scoring four unanswered goals to pull out a 5 to 2 victory.
Jordan scored a pair while Chris, Kyle S and Alex G also scored. Patrick, Frederick and Eric were credited with assists. Kyle C earned the win in the Blues net.
After the game most of the team headed to the hotel for a much appreciated dinner. Good news for the folks back home being concerned about such things... the entrees on the buffet were turkey (with all the trimmings) and pasta. Several players were actually seen with balanced and nutritional servings on their plates.
It should be an early curfew for all as we face an 8:00 am game to start our day on Friday.
*******************
THURSDAY 4:00 PM
Blues are descending upon Lake Placid.
The official hotel of the Orleans Blues for this tournament is the Crowne Plaza. Majestically situated high above Main Street, the hotel offers a breath taking panorama of the Adirondacks. Another plus is that it is about a 5 minute (downhill) walk to the Olympic Center - where the Blues play most of their games.
Lake Placid has a very international feel about it today. In addition to the tournament the Blues are playing in, Lake Placid is also hosting the Four Nations Cup. It includes teams from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and the USA. Our women's national team is here and many of the Blues will see them play tomorrow. This afternoon your blogger and his player ate lunch in a restaurant with Team Sweden. We then bumped into members of Team Finland at a hockey store. Kind of neat to think that our 14-year old Blues have something in common with people from different parts of the world.
The Blues get their first taste of international hockey tonight against the Saranac Lake Red Storm. Saranac Lake is about 10 miles from Lake Placid.
The tournament will be posting standings, stats, and game results throughout the weekend at: www.canamhockey.com
******************
THURSDAY 10:00 AM
We're packing up and getting ready to go. It is a lovely day for a drive. The Blues should be feeling good after last night's victory so spirits should be high.
The nervous team manager has double checked travel permits, insurance forms and critical registration materials.
The players have hopefully packed all of their equipment.
MapQuest says the trip will take 3 hours and 42 minutes. Google Maps says the trip will take 3 hours and 16 minutes. I'm just trying to figure out how to program Tim Hortons into my new GPS.
The adventure begins!
**********************
The Blues are heading south and crossing the border into the US of A. From November 6 to 9th, the Blues will be competing in the Can Am Challenge in Lake Placid New York.
Follow the team through all of its adventures from the convenience of your own computer. This page will be home to the Blues Blog - your travel companion - bringing you regular updates and the latest news from Lake Placid.
