Ridge Point holds off Tomball in Game One, 8-6

Tomball's Ishmael Edwards bats in the bottom of the seventh,
in Game One of the Cougars' Regional Quarterfinal playoff
series
vs. Ridge Point. The Panthers won, 8-6.

Ridge Point’s Cade Killingsworth did it not just with his arm, but with his bat as well. The University of Houston commit pitched four innings to earn the victory and belted a three-run, go-ahead home run that helped the Panthers (23-10) hold off the Tomball Cougars (28-4) by a score of 8-6, in Game One of the UIL State Baseball Region III Quarterfinals (best-of-three), Thursday night at Stratford HS.

Cougars head coach Doug Rush decided to start pitcher Bryce Wellborn, choosing to reserve his two best starters in Robert Dugger and Eric Dunbar presumably for Games Two and Three. But Welborn immediately got into trouble by loading the bases in the first inning, and had to be relieved by Stephen Bonnain.

Ridge Point got one run in the first before Tomball touched Killingsworth for three in the bottom half. The Cougars held a 5-3 lead after just two innings, but the turning point in the game came when Killingsworth connected for a three-run homer in the top of the third off Bonnain that gave Ridge Point a 6-5 advantage. T.J. Alexander then immediately followed with a solo shot to give the Panthers a two-run cushion.

“The home run really gave us all back some confidence that we were in this game,” said Killingsworth. “This is the deepest I’ve ever been into the playoffs in my four years here, so I’m just out here trying to have some fun.”

Tomball got one back in the third, but Ridge Point added another in the top of the fifth to make it 8-6. The Panthers then had to pull Killingworth from the mound after the righty had thrown 114 pitches. Will Cinek took the ball for the Panthers, and the Cougars loaded the bases off him with one out. But, he struck out Ishmael Edwards, and then got Dillon Menville to fly out, ending the threat.

Tomball collected back-to-back singles by Dunbar and Nick Falcone with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Cinek escaped the jam again by getting Casey Smith to ground into a double play.

After Bonnain held the Panthers in the top of the seventh, Cinek gave up a one-out double to Nick Banks before getting Anthony Lucas to ground out. That left it up to Edwards, who popped up to end the game.

“Cade was a little off tonight, but he kept us in this game, and Cinek did a really nice job for us,” said Panthers head coach Jody Albright. “We overcame some mistakes – we were shaky defensively which is not normal for us - and we just found a way to win this one.”

Killingsworth went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a pair of runs scored, while allowing six runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings pitched, with seven strikeouts and four walks. Menville went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for the Cougars, while Nick Banks had a pair of hits and scored twice.

“We didn’t play a terrible game, we scored six runs and had a chance to win,” said Cougars head coach Doug Rush. “I like our pitching matchups with Robert and Eric going for us in the next two, but Ridge Point is a good baseball team. We’re going to have to hit the ball better when we have scoring opportunities, than we did tonight.”

It was the third game between the two teams this year. They met one another twice earlier this season, with Tomball winning the first meeting 9-8 at home. The Cougars then traveled to Ridge Point and were shut out 4-0, as the Panthers handed them their only district loss back on April 12.

The series continues Friday night with Game Two of the best-of-three at Stratford. If a third game is needed, it will be played Saturday at 2 pm, also at Stratford. The winner of this quarterfinal series will meet the winner of the Nederland vs. Montgomery series, in the regional semifinals.

Pitching and defense carried the Ridge Point softball team to its first Region III-4A quarterfinal championship May 10, as the Lady Panthers swept Santa Fe 2-1 and 1-0.

The Lady Panthers will face Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the regional semifinals for a three-game series, while the Ridge Point baseball team continues its longest postseason run against District 22-4A rival Tomball in the regional quarterfinals.

Ridge Point’s softball team received a complete-game two-hitter from Amber Grove in the series opener. Cortni Emanuel provided the Lady Panthers’ first run in the third inning, scoring Bri Nunn.

Ridge Point won in the bottom of the seventh as LeeAnn Thompson, Sydni Emanuel and Kendall Burton singled in succession to open the frame and end the game.

Kate Patel pitched a shutout in the second game, striking out four and scattering eight hits without a walk. Santa Fe loaded the bases twice in the first inning but lost two runners on the basepaths, the last thrown out at home by Burton.

Sydni Emanuel led the Lady Panthers offensively, with an RBI double in addition to a walk and two stolen bases. Emily Keithley and Cortni Emanuel had the only other hits in game two. Santa Fe had two singles in the seventh inning but could not push across the tying run.

The Panthers swept their area playoff series against Santa Fe, 1-0 and 7-6 in eight innings. Cade Killingsworth was excellent in game one, allowing five hits while striking out six in a shutout.

Tyler Caldwell drove in the game’s only run after T.J. Alexander singled and J.B. Aguirre stole second as a courtesy runner.

Will Vest was among the offensive leaders in game two, with J.T. Jakubik turning in a solid start and helping Ridge Point lead much of the contest until Santa Fe rallied.

The Panthers face District 22-4A champion Tomball next. The Cougars bring a 29-2 record into the regional quarterfinal series, but their only district loss was 4-0 against Ridge Point.
