LONDONER RECEIVES BASEBALL AWARD

Matthew Smith of the London Badger Midgets was named Adult Player of the Year at the 96th Baseball Ontario Awards Gala in Alliston on November 17th.
Smith who is currently is in his first season at Roane State C.C. in Harriman, Tennessee was an integral part of the Badger Midget team that captured the bronze medal at the Baseball Canada Midget Championships in Quebec City in August. In the bronze medal game he pitched eight complete innings allowing only two hits.

CANADA SETTLES FOR SILVER
Seoul, Korea - In the end it just wasn’t meant to be for the Canadian Junior National Team as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the United States in the gold medal game at the IBAF 18U World Championships.

As a result, Canada will take home the silver medal which is the best finish by a Canadian team at the event since 1991 when Canada took home gold in Brandon, MB.

“It’s a tremendous accomplishment for twenty players, I’m really proud of them,” said Manager Greg Hamilton of the silver medal. “We didn’t get the easy route to the final and to get to the final and finish second is a testament to some very talented and committed players.”

Canada opened the scoring in the top of the second when Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON) hit an RBI ground out to score Jesse Hodges (Victoria, BC) from third base.

The US responded in the home half of the second when starter Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) gave up a single and then a double that saw interference called on Hodges at third base which led to the game being tied.

Quantrill allowed a walk and single to start the third before a sac-bunt was laid down to move the runners. After a single scored two runs, Travis Seabrooke (Peterborough, ON) came into replace Quantrill on the mound.

After getting a ground ball out, Seabrooke gave-up an RBI single and the US was out to a 4-1 lead.

Tempers flared in the bottom of the fourth when USA’s William Abreu was ejected by the home plate umpire for running catcher Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) on a play at home. Shaw held onto the ball for the out and stayed in the game..

Abreu was immediately ejected after the collision and US Manager Scott Brosius argued the call which saw IBAF Technical Officials come onto the field which caused a lengthy delay.

The delay seemed to provide a spark for Canada as they scored a run off a Shaw RBI ground out in the fifth to cut the deficit to two.

Seabrooke gave up a single to start the top of the fifth and Brock Dykxhoorn (Goderich, ON) came out of the bullpen and got a groundout and double play to end the inning.

Canada missed an opportunity to score in the sixth as they left the bases loaded with two out.

The US added two more runs in the seventh off pitcher Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, ON) with both coming off what was called an RBI double as two runs scored when a line drive deflected off Kellogg and rolled into left field.

Canada made three errors in the game and managed only four hits against three different US pitchers.

“Full marks to them-they managed ten hits, didn’t make any costly errors and played a clean ballgame,” said Hamilton. “No shame for our guys-they battled and competed.

“It was 4-2 late but it turned out to be their night.”

For Hamilton, who also doubles as Baseball Canada’s Director of National Teams, the silver medal is the fourth that he has picked up in less than eleven months (IBAF World Cup - Bronze; Pan Am Games-Gold; COPABE 18U Qualifier-Silver). This signifies a very successful time in the history of Baseball Canada’s National Teams.

“I think it shows that we can play at the highest levels,” said Hamilton. “It’s a motivating factor and motivating force for the game in Canada.

“To take a group of high school players and finish second in the world relative to the best players on the globe is tremendous.”

The silver medal also signifies the end of this two year cycle for the Junior National Team which concluded with the IBAF 18U World Championship. In October, the Junior National Team program will see a handful of players from this club participate in the annual Fall Instructional League Camp, while the majority of players will be brand new to the program.

“Our goal is to win one of these,” explained Hamilton. “Most importantly, our goal is to do what we did over the past two years which is to develop a group of players that’s capable of competing physically against the best in the world.”

Canada did come away with some individual awards as Mitchell Triolo (Scarborough, ON) took home the tournament's home run crown, while Jesse Hodges (Third Base) and Kyle Hann (Second Base) were named tournament all-stars.

LONDON BADGERS BRING HOME BRONZE MEDAL
Dan Haugh, Badger Media Liaison

The London Badgers defeated host Quebec City by a 3-2 score in extra innings to capture the Bronze Medal at the 2012 Baseball Canada Midget Championships in Quebec City.

Left-hander Matt Smith pitched all eight innings for the Badgers holding the opposition to two runs on only two hits. Nolan Anderson who was named the Offensive Player of the tournament had two hits in the game, but it was Minor Midget player Garan Stevens who singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in Quinton Twohey with the winning run.

In morning action the Badgers lost to Alberta 6-3. Alberta went on to defeat British Columbia 4-1 in the Gold Medal game.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the London Badgers Midgets have brought home a medal from the Baseball Canada Midget Championships and the sixth time in the history of the Badger program. They have participated in the Baseball Canada Midget Championships nine times in the past 16 years

London Badgers Win Gold in Regina
For the third time in their history and the second time in the past three years the London Badgers have captured the Gold Medal at the Baseball Canada Midget Championships.
The Badgers finished the week in Regina with a 5-1 record including a semi-final win over Quebec by a 3-0 score that featured a strong pitching performance by Tim Black and timely hitting by Byron Reichstein and Mike Ambrose. Quebec who were undefeated going into the semi-final game but were held hitless by Black went on to take the Bronze Medal with an 11-1 win over Saskatchewan.
In the championship game, the Badgers were down early as Alberta scored a pair of runs in the first inning. That lead didn't last long as the Badgers started to pick away at the lead with single runs in each of the second and third innings. Brendan DeClark led off the second with a single and after he stole second was driven by a Taylor Carr single. Nolan Anderson who would play a significant role in the championship game tripled in the third inning and then scored on a passed ball to tie the score at 2-2.
With a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings it looked like London might have the game in hand with Taylor Carr on the mound. Carr provided a big RBI triple and then scored himself in the top of the sixth to put the Badgers into what appeared to be a comfortable 6-3 lead, but Alberta scratched away with a single run in the sixth and a pair in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings.
The eighth inning proved to be very intense. The Badgers loaded the bases with none out with the help of a pair of Alberta errors, a balk and a base on balls. After David Logan hit into a fielder's choice forcing Brendan DeClark at the plate for the first out of the inning, Mike Ambrose was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run and then Nolan Anderson walked to score the insurance run and put London up 8-6 going into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Alberta refused to go quietly in the eighth against Jeff Prouse who had come on to start the final inning on the mound for the Badgers. With two out and a runner on first Alberta put together their own combination of hit batter and a walk to load the bases. At this point Nolan Anderson was called upon to close out the game, and he did just that by getting the Alberta batter to pop up to Taylor Carr at first on the only pitch he threw the entire tournament.
Badger tournament award winners for Most Valuable Player included in Mitch Lumley (MVP game 1), Taylor Carr (MVP game 3), Matt Smith (MVP game 4), Tim Black (MVP game 5) and Nolan Anderson MVP in the gold medal game.
Three straight medals at Midget Nationals, two Gold Medals in three years, and the third Gold in the history of the organization speaks volumes to the quality of the program and the quality of coaching provided by head coach Mike Lumley.
The London Badger are without a doubt among the most respected Midget baseball programs in the entire country of Canada, and the planning for another trip to Nationals has already begun.
Congratulations to the London Badgers...
