Welcome to the home of the
    Riverside Pirates

    Nationals almost here
June 28, 2008 Real soon, the Pirates will be making their way towards Fargo, ND. Along the way, we'll be hitting up some camps and eventually end up in Fargo.

5 Pirates are making the trip to Fargo this year. This is the most in Pirate wrestling history. Its been a long two months of fundraising, but we are within $400 of our goal of $7500, to send these kids to Nationals.

    Wrestlers are:
    Juan Llamas
    Carlos Garcia
    Vinnie Thomason
    Abel Murillo
    Gustavo Madrigal

We've been doing odd community jobs throughout this time and running a raffle in order to raise the money necessary to attend. The kids have been working their butts off inside and outside the wrestling room and its going to pay off real soon.

July 4th will be the pinnacle of our fundraising efforts as we run a booth at the July 4th festival here in Boardman. We'll have a float in the parade with all Pirate members being a part of it. At the Marina, we'll be selling popcicles, snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Again, thanks to the Boardman community for all your support and hope to see you on the 4th.

    Pirates do it again!
May 6, 2008 The Pirates yet again, had another record breaking year.

Along with having our 2nd state HS champion and finishing in the top 10 as a Jr high team in the state, we had record state placing totals for the 2008 club season. this included our first ever Dual State Champion.

    Vinnie Thomason 3rd GR/5th FR 215
    Carlos Garcia 3rd GR/5th FR 140
    Juan Llamas 3rd GR/5th FR 130
    Kyle Sullivan 6th GR 160

The Pirates will be sending 6 kids to Nationals this season in hopes to bring home an All-American. National Team members are:

Gustavo Madrigal, Abel Murillo, James Town, Juan Llamas, Carlos Garcia and Vinnie Thomason.

    Go Pirates!!!

Great year to be a Pirate!
March 17, 2008 Well, its been awhile since our last update as we've been quite busy this year, bringing home some hardware.

The Riverside wrestling programs are having record seasons this year. The kids program is exploding this year, and qualified our first ever wrestlers for the Oregon Classic. Hans Rockwell, Abel Murillo, Juan Alba and Gustavo Madrigal all qualified this year. The Oregon Classic is the largest wrestling tournament in the state.

Hans and Aristotle Rockwell were both invited to wrestle in the Orange and Black Dual at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis before the Civil War Dual this year and they didn't disappoint. Hans faced this years 5th placer from state in Tyler Schilling of Sweet Home and won 7-0. Aristotle faced a wrestler from the Orange Crush WC and won 16-3.

The HS team this year qualified 8 wrestlers for state this season and we finished 3rd at the district tournament as a team.

Vinnie Thomason and Brigham Hansen District Champs
Daniel Hansen and Mason Murphy District Runner-ups
Eric Magallanes, James Town, Juan Llamas and Carlos Garcia all took 3rd

At the state tournament, we had four state placers, including Riverside's 2nd ever state champion.

Vinnie Thomason was this year's 3A State Champion at 285lbs with a 7-2 win in the finals. This was Vinnie's goal all season and with a ton of hardwork and dedication, he achieved it. Daniel Hansen and James Town came home with 3rd place medals and Brigham Hansen took 4th as a freshman in a weight class loaded with seniors(160lbs). Eric Magallanes also won a match at 119lbs. Garcia and Llamas both went 0-2. Riverside finished 11th as a team.

At the Junior High level, we had our best season ever. The junior high team managed to qualify 7 wrestlers for the state tournament. Keep in mind, the junior high has no school size separation and competes against Hermiston, Pendleton, Ontario, and other much larger schools in order to make it to state.

Briton Hansen was our lone regional champ.
Juan Alba, Samuel Ramirez, Abel Murillo and Gustavo Madrigal all took 2nd.
Martin Herrera and Marco Carranza both took 4th.

At the Middle School State Tournament, Riverside finished in the top 10 once again in a field of 95 teams throughout the state of OR. We brought home 4 state placers and 2 others won matches. This is a great feat considering we competed against schools that are much larger than ours like Redmond, Eugene, Roseburg, Newberg, Portland, Bend and others.

Juan Alba was our highest placer by taking 3rd at 136lbs.
Gustavo Madrigal surprised his weight class by beating several returning state placers to take home 4th at 100lbs. This is Gustavo's first yr of wrestling.
Briton Hansen took home a 5th place medal. Last year, Briton took 6th.
Abel Murillo became a first time placer with his 6th place finish at 105lbs.
Samuel Ramirez and Marco Carranza both won a match and went 1-2 at 122lbs and 195lbs. Martin Herrera went 0-2 at 110lbs.

We also just started our freestyle wrestling season and the kids have been practicing hard towards their shot to make the Oregon National Team. We have roughly 25 kids from age 9-18 still working out regularly. Last year we only managed about 10, so this is huge in comparison to last season and great for Pirate wrestling because these guys are only going to get better.

We competed in our first freestyle tournament at Hood River on March 15th and brought home a ton of hardware.

    AJ Rockwell 1st
    Eric Magallanes 1st
    Billy Griffin 1st
    James Town 1st
    Martin Herrera 1st
    Omar Murillo 1st
    Cain Murillo 2nd
    Juan Llamas 2nd
    Joel Llamas 2nd
    Vinnie Thomason 3rd
    Gustavo Madrigal 3rd
    Trevor Graff 3rd
    Fernando Castaneda 3rd
    Hans Rockwell 3rd

The Pirates will compete in their home tournament on March 22nd as they llok to defend last years team title.

The Pirate WC has a lot of things in store for this coming year, including a trip to Vegas for the very tough West Jr Regionals, our various state tournaments throughout the state, a trip to Pocatello, ID for the Kids/Cadets Western Regional tournament and the trips to Fargo ND for anyone who qualifies for Nationals.

So, look for the Pirate WC to be working their butts off on the mat, as well as around the community raising funds for these events, so they can represent the town of Boardman and the Pirate WC.

    Cadets/Schoolboys perform well
April 16, 2007 At the Cadet State Tournament and Schoolboy Festival, the Pirate WC performed well. We brought 10 kids, 6 Cadets and 4 Schoolboys and came away with 3 champs, and 4 additional placers.

There was a lot of tough competition with some of the very best Cadets and Schoolboys willing to put it on the line in the spring season and compete at this tournament.

    Placers:
    Schoolboy
Juan Alba 1st FR and GR
    Abel Murillo 1st GR

    Cadets
    James Town 4th GR
    Antonio Nieto 4th GR
Juan Llamas 5th GR and 6th FR

It was a great experience for all the kids as they all competed well in every match. Look for these guys to continue to get better as they get out to even more tournaments this spring and summer. Next up for the Pirate's is the Kids State Tournament where the Pirate's will look to continue their strong performance at the state level.

    Kids do great at State!
April 23, 2007 It was another great showing at the state tournament for the Pirate WC as we took 8 to the Kids State Tournament in Hermiston and placed 7. This is our best showing ever at the Kids State Tournament. There was a lot of tough competition in the building over the 2 day event and the Pirate WC held its own. What's even better about our club doing so well is that 5 of our placers are first year wrestlers.

    Placers:
Juan Alba Schoolboy 2nd FR, GR
Abel Murillo Schoolboy 4th FR, GR
Cain Murillo Schoolboy 5th FR, 4th GR
Jovanny Llamas Schoolboy 6th FR, GR
Hans Rockwell Novice 3rd FR, 4th GR
Aristotle Rockwell Midget 4th FR, 5th GR
    Jared Miller Bantam 6th FR

All in all, the coaching staff was very impressed with how well Pirate's performed as the future looks very bright for the Pirate WC and Pirate wrestling teams. Next up for the Pirate WC is the Junior State Tournament in Roseburg. We'll be taking up to 7 wrestlers to the event in hopes of placing in the top 6 against the state's toughest wrestlers that are willing to put it on the line and continue wrestling in the spring season.

    JR's perform well at State
    April 30, 2007
It was yet another great showing at the last of the state tournaments this year for the Pirate WC. We came away with two National Team qualifiers at the Jr State FR/GR Tournament in Roseburg this past weekend. We brought 5 wrestlers to the event and all five performed well. The Pirate's were led by James Town's 2nd place finish in Greco at 105 and Vinnie Thomason's 4th place finish in Greco. James' finish was the highest placing ever for the Jr State tournament for the Pirate's. Carlos Garcia, Christian and Juan Llamas were all extremely close to winning matches in Greco as well. James and Vinnie finished the tournament with 2 pins each. In Freestyle, we weren't nearly as fortunate as the competition heated up. James and Vinnie both failed to place, but were a match away from doing so. Another bright spot was Carlos Garcia getting his first win of the weekend and coming within 1 win from placing as well. This was a huge accomplishment for Carlos as this was his also his first win of the spring season. The exciting thing about doing this well is that of all five of the wrestlers will all be back for the HS season next year. Vinnie is a junior and all the rest were sophomores and freshman. Look for the Pirate WC to continue to perform well at the Regional and National tournaments this summer.

    Wrestlers do well at Regionals
July 1, 2007 The Pirate wrestling made the trip to Western Regionals in Klamath Falls this past June and came away with their first placer at the event. The Pirates competed against some of the nations best kids from OR, WA, ID, MT, CA, AK, HI, WY, AZ, NV and UT.

James Town led the Pirates with a 5th place finish in Greco. This is a huge feat for James as this is his first year wrestling freestyle and greco for our club. James was also a match away from placing in freestyle.

Aristotle Rockwell was also one win away from placing in greco. This was Aristotle's first tournament outside of the state tournament. Juan Llamas was also a match away from placing in freestyle. This was Juan's first regional tournament and only his 2nd year of wrestling both styles.

Chuy Alba and Hans Rockwell, ran into some very tough competition and both went 0-4 for the tournament. However, both were within reach of getting a win at this prestigous event.

Overall, the kids had a blast and took home with them a ton of knowledge to use for the upcoming season.

Look for James to continue onto Nationals in Fargo, ND, along with teammate Vinnie Thomason, as they hope to become the first Pirate's to place at the tournament of all tournaments.

    Pirates win Freestyle Team Title
March 24, 2007 This was the Pirates 1st Annual Freestyle Team Challenge and with teams from WA, ID and OR, we came away with the 1st place finish. That's outstanding!

The Pirates were led by 10 of their best freestyle wrestlers, in hopes of competing against other teams who entered the team portion of the tournament. Teams from NW Disciples, Pendleton, Hermiston, Clarkston and Powder Valley all entered the team tournament. There were also teams from Moscow ID, Walla Walla, Hood River, Snake River ID, Redmond, Madras, Grants Pass, Sisters, Irrigon and Grant County who didn't enter the team competition.

The Pirates scored 27 pts for first, with two teams close behind in a tie for 2nd. NW Disciples and Pendleton MC were in 2nd palce with 26pts each. 4th was Clarkston WC out of WA with 24 pts, 5th was Hermiston with 23pts and 6th was Powder Valley with 19pts.

The Pirates had a great turnout as around 20 wrestlers from our club. who were still in town for spring break, showed up ready to wrestle all comers and defend their home turf. To add to it, the Pirates got to sport their new "Team Pirate" singlets to the home crowd.

    Pirate placers:

    Peninsula Results
March 17, 2007 Team Pirate traveled to the Peninsula Superstar tournament in Gresham and did pretty well for our first freestyle tournament of the year. We took 11 wrestlers, 8 of which were brand new to freestle and came away with 6 placers in some pretty solid brackets. Vinnie Thomason had the toughest bracket at HWT with a four time National Champ, a state runner up, another state placer and two state qualifiers. He didn't back down and managed to get 4th.

Another featured match up was in the Novice group in which two state champs met up in their first match of the day. Hans Rockwell, last years FR/GR state champ at Midget 60 met up against last years GR State Champ and FR Runner up in Kaleb Raber of Salem Elite. This was Hans' first match since Dec after suffering a broken collar bone and came out a little shaky agaisnt a very tough Raber. Hans ended up losing the match by tech fall in the 2nd round. However, Hans battled back and ppinned his next two opponents to take 2nd.

Newcomer to freestyle, Jared Lemmon also wrestled well on the day by taking 2nd in his first tournament of the year, after suffering a broken hand in the first weeks of practice. We were pretty excited with his performance.

Overall, along with our 6 placers, we had two others who were a match away from placing. The most impressive part of the day was how well our first year wrestlers performed. They came out ready to wrestle and faired well.

Next up for the Pirates will be their home team tournament Mar 24th, as they try and bring home the team title.

    Peninsula Results
    3rd Aristotle Rockwell
    2nd Hans Rockwell
    2nd Jared Lemmon
    2nd Jovanny Llamas
    2nd Cain Murillo
    3rd Eric Magallanes

Riverside Jr High finishes 9th at state
March 3, 2007 The Pirate wrestling continue to have a strong season this year when the Pirate Jr High Team took 4 kids to state and tied for 9th of 92 teams overall in the team standings. At one point after the semi finals, we were in 5th place. This was outstanding! This was the highest the Pirate team has ever finished at state with the previous record being 13th place.

8th grader, Brigham Hansen led the charge by capturing the 165lb state title with a dominating performance. Brigham pinned his way to the finals, where he beat Taylor Parks of Sandstone, 12-2 in the finals. This was no surprise to his coaches, as he had finished 3rd the year prior and had been having an outstanding season.

One surprise however, would have to be first year 8th grade wrestler, Billy Griffin at 275lbs. Billy took 3rd at Regionals and came in as an underdog. He not only was a 1st year wrestler, but only weighed 190lbs. He was at times wrestling kids 50lbs heavier than him. Billy came in with a mission to make it to the placing rounds and come away with a top 6 finish. However, Billy ended up pinning his way to the finals(two of which he was losing) before he lost by pin in the 2nd round against Charlie Ford of St Helens in the finals. Billy however, was leading for most of the match, but got in bad position and got turned in his loss.

7th grade wrestler, Briton Hansen, also came in with a goal trying to place and accomplished that goal when he made it to the semi finals, with a dec and a pin in the quarters. However, that's all the further Briton would go as he lost to the eventual state champ in the semi's and lost his last two matches by a 2-0 and 4-2 score, to finish in 6th place.

Our last wrestler, Cain Murrillo wasn't so lucky as he lost both of his matches at state. However, Cain kept his head up and was glad he got to compete at this tough tournament as a first year wrestler. He was pumped about this years season, that the Tuesday after state, he showed up for freestyle practice ready to build on this years performance when he comes in as a freshman.

The great thing about this team is that 3 of these wrestlers will be freshman next season and will be seasoned for what it takes to be successful at the state level. This will only make our High School team that much stronger next year. Another positive aspect is that of all the 6th and 7th graders we had out this season, all of them except for 3 are still wrestling this spring because they want to make it to state next year. This is how championships are built and we look forward to seeing the Pirates progress over the next couple of years.

    January/February Results
Its been another great two months for the Pirate Wrestling Teams.

First off, I need to congratulate Pirate wrestler, Daniel Hansen, winning Riverside's first ever HS state title with his 4-1 victory at 215 over Eric Coy of Vale. Hansen and Coy had 3 previous meetings prior to state with Coy having the edge 2-1 over Hansen. However, Hansen battled hard by beating Coy for the first time at our district tournament in OT, 8-6 and then in the state finals.

To start with at state, Daniel clearly had the toughest side of the bracket with him facing 3 of the top 10 ranked 215lbers in the state. Daniel started with a 4-2 win over #2 seed, James Benson of Dayton. Next up, was Warrenton's Nathan Massey in which Daniel won 4-0. Then in the semis, Daniel faced Nic Morris of Reedsport and wrestled smart and tough and came away with the 6-0 win to face Coy in the finals.

Coy is extremely dangerous from his feet with a great arsenal of throws. He had caught Daniel a couple of times, but in working with Hansen, he got better and better everytime they faced each other. Sure enough, Coy tried a throw right off the bat and Daniel caught him and nearly had him on his back, but Coy got out of bounds for no score. They continued to wrestle on their feet to a 0-0 score after round 1. Round 2 came and Daniel quickly escaped for a 1-0 lead. Coy again tried for a throw, but Daniel stayed in good position at all times and prevented any serious attack. Round 3 came with Coy starting down and after about a minute, Coy escaped to tie it, 1-1. With about 15 secs. left, Coy came in hard, head first and caught his face on Daniel's head. Under frsutration, Coy blurted out a curse and the ref dinged him 1pt, to put Daniel ahead 2-1. Coy knowing he needed to
score quickly, tried a shot, that Daniel easily countered for the 4-1 win.

Every fan from Eastern and Central Or, cheered for Daniel after his win, as he quickly threw off his ankle bands and jumped into Coach Dave Boor's arms(nearly killing him in the process,LOL).

    New addition
I'd personally like to welcome all the new faces to our room this year. Our first week of practice went well considering having to deal with school conferences during the same week, but for the most part everyone showed up. We also have a a new experienced wrestler in the room in Jared Lemmon. Jared recently moved to our area from Hillsboro and is the younger brother of Portland State wrestler, Brian Lemmon. Brian wrestled for Century High School and was a state placer for them. Jared will be a great addition to our already burgeoning program. Look for Jared to be at many tournaments this season representing the Pirate Wrestling Club.

High School practice starts this week and even though we are missing a few bodies at the beginning,(most of our soccer players are still playing in the state playoffs) we had a solid turnout. A lot of new freshman turned out this season as they wanted to be part of the team that finished 2nd in league last year and took 9 to state. Welcome all new Pirate wrestlers from the coaching staff.

    Practices ready to start
Boy is the room going to be full this year. We just keep getting bigger and bigger in the Pirate Wrestling Club. After a very successful season last year, we more kids clamering at the opportunity to be part of something great. Just recently, I met with our 6th graders and have over 40 kids in attendance. The week prior, we met with out 7th and 8th graders and had over 30. From K-5th grade, we are going to have around 40-50 kids as well. Even as big as our 4 mat wrestling is room, we might be bursting at the seams this year and we may end up splitting into several practices to ensure there is ample room for everyone. Our room is always open to kids wanting to learn skills from experienced high school coaches who have coached numerous youth thru high school state placers and champs. If you are traveling through and want to drop in on a practice, feel free to email me and we can let you know our practice times are. Richard Rockwell

What's even better this year, we picked up a new coach in our room by the name of Venancio Aparicio. Venancio was a 3-time state placer for Zillah High School in Washington and was part of two of their state title teams. Coach Aparacio will be a great addition to our growing program as he will be working with our youth, junior high and high school wrestlers.

We plan on stepping it up another notch in the room, as we look to take more kids to various tournaments throughout the state. Its all about our building process with our kids and reaching the potential goal of being a State Champion. We believe in building the kids from the gorund up and making sure we don't burn them out at a young age and get them into junior high and high school with the basic skills to become successful. As of now, its working as our 6th grade numbers have grown from 6 kids to nearly 40.

Nov. 18th is coming fast and we look to have a good amount of kids at our first home tournament ready to wrestle anyone that shows up. Good luck to everyone throughout the season and we'll see you on the mat.

Ex-Pirate Wrestler Now An Olympic Coach
May 24, 2006 Ex-Pirate wrestler, Levi Weikel-Magden was recently appointed as an official USAW Women's Assistant National Team Wrestling Coach. Levi, with the help of head National Team coach Terry Steiner, helped coach the Women's National team to a third place finish at the World Team Cup in Japan. Levi's wife, Patricia, also competes for the Women's Olympic Team and recently won US Nationals in Vegas and was the first ever Women's Olympic medalist in 2004 when she took the bronze. Levi wrestled for Riverside HS and the Pirate Wrestling Club from 1994-97 and placed 3 times at the state tournament, 5th, 2nd and 4th. He also captured a Freestyle state title in 1995 and wrestled on the Oregon National Team. Levi then went onto to a great career at Stanford University as a 4 year varsity wrestler and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament his senior year. Levi is currently in law school on the east coast. I had an opportunity to coach Levi in HS and am very proud of all of his accomplishments in wrestling anf life. Great job Levi.

Tucker Tovey takes 6th at FR
April 3, 2006 Well, four Pirates made the trip to Roseburg for the JR HS State FR/GR tournament and Tucker Tovey came away with another 6th place finish in FR. He was the only Pirate to place. Tucker rolled off four straight pins in order to make it to the placing rounds and had a great tournament after failing to place in Greco the day before. Tucker beat some very tough kids and in two of his matches had to get things going after falling behind early. However, Tucker pulled off some big moves and got his opponents to their backs and finished them off. Tucker has now qualified for the Western JR Regional Tournament in Las Vegas and qualified for the OR JR National Team. This is a great accomplishment as Tucker is our 1st JR State placer in any style.

Marcus Martinez, Cody Connell and Juan Llamas also made the trip and even though they failed to place, they picked up some very valuable experience against some of the toughest kids in our state and nation. This will be a building block for them next season as we hope for big things to come from them.

This weekend, we take about 6 kids to the Cadet state tournament in Beaverton and hope to come away with some more placers. The following week is our little kids state tournament in Hermiston and look to take about 10 kids their as well.

    Pirate Kids Club finishes strong!
April 24, 2006 Picture Above-Hans Rockwell throws his opponent for 3 pts, on his way to capturing his 2nd State Title on the weekend.

The Pirate Wrestling Club finished up its regular season with a bang, by placing two wrestlers at the Kids Freestyle/Greco State tournament this past weekend in Hermiston.

We took five wrestlers to the event, Clay Miller, Elijah Conlon, Santino Leon, Aristotle Rockwell and Hans Rockwell. The Pirates came away with two state placers. Santino Leon took 4th in Freestyle and Hans Rockwell was the Dual State Champ in Freestyle and Greco. Hans is the first Pirate Club member to win a state title, as well as being the first wrestling from Boardman to win a state title of any kind from all levels from kids thru high school. Hans had a total of 5 pts. scored on him for entire weekend. Santino wrestled well, and even though he received two losses, still managed to place 4th overall in his age and weight group. They both qualify for the Western Regional tournament in Klamath Falls this summer and if they do well there, they will qualify for Nationals in Green Bay, Wisc. this summer as well.

Other Pirate Wrestlers, Clay, Elijah and Aristotle all wrestled tough on the weekend. While there goal was to come away as placers, all three of them did their best and wrestled some of their best matches all year against some of the toughest kids in the state. I am proud of every single one of our wrestlers this year, as we had a great season and will look to build upon this over the summer.

Last thing, I'd like to thank all of the parents and wrestlers, and especially the community for their support this year. It has been a long season, but in the end we finished strong. Without your help and support, we couldn't have done it.

This summer, we look to try and get our kids better in the offseason as the Pirate Wrestling Club will hold its 2nd Annual Columbia River Wrestling Camp featuring Dan Hicks of Cal State-Fullerton. Dan was a two-time OR state champ, a two-time D1 National Champ at Oregon St. and was voted Wrestler of the Decade in his weight class. We are also bringing in legendary OR high school coach, Verl Miller, formerly of LaGrande HS. Verl is one of the states best wrestling coaches and led LaGrande to two state 4A titles and numerous individual state champs and placers before he retired several years ago. This will be another opportunity for our kids to get even better for the coming years. The Pirates will be looking for donations to help bring in these two leading up to the event as well as doing some car washes and misc. work over the summer to help offset the cost of bringing in highly qualified clinicians. Your support is always appreciated and if you want more details about the camp or would like to make a donation to our cause, call Pirate Club coach, Richard Rockwell at 481-2371.
