PITBULLS ADVANCE TO 2 & 0
The Pitbulls (2-0) took on another one of their divisional opponents, the New York Demon Knights (0-2) on a sweltering 98 degree day in Roosevelt. But before we go any further in this article, hats off to the Demon Knights who came down to the field with 24 players and played their hearts out.
After a dismal first quarter the Pitbulls would be the first to put points on the board. Steve Newman connected with Rodney Myrick about 5 yards from the line of scrimmage, and after a broken tackle Myrick found pay dirt 11 yards later for the Touchdown. After the PAT the Pitbulls took the lead 7-0. With the half winding down Mike Novembre would force a fumble and Tyrone “Speedy” Sandford would pick it up at about the 14 and almost take it back to the house before running out of gas and being brought down at the 18 yard line. That play would end the half 7-0 Pitbulls.
Starting out the second half with very poor field position, the Pitbulls offense found themselves with their backs against the wall deep in their own territory. After a penalty and 2 negative run plays the “O” had a 3rd and long from the one yard line, that is when the Demon Knight “D” would make the tackle in the endzone for the safety. The Black & Gold defense as always would come thru and on 3rd down Evan Smith would force the fumble and recover it himself and run it down to the 4 yard line where he was tackled and suffered a broken leg. The next play Ian Hunter would take it in for 6. Giving the Pitbulls the 12 point lead 14-2.
After the defense forced another 3 and out, and 2 penalties on the same play the Pits had it 1st and 10 from the Demon Knight 33. Marvin Caswell got the hand off broke a tackle, cut back and ran until he could dunk the ball over the goal post for the touchdown. It seemed like no matter who ran the ball they could score because of our O-Line. They might as well all get jobs as waiters at IHOP the way they serve up Pancakes, they all finished up the day with multiple flap jacks and Mike McQueen being the leader with 9.
The defense which was led by DaWhite Hines (6 tackles) & Manny “Fresh” Depas (6 tackles) forced 6 batted balls, numerous QB hurries, 2 fumbles, and 2 blocked kicks. After the game one of the fans were quoted by saying “Your defense is lights out and is going to be the reason why you win games. They hit hard, they’re smart and all 11 are flying to the ball”.
DaWhite Hines was named Defensive MVP for his game leading 6 tackles, and the Offensive MVP went to Left Tackle Mike McQueen who had 9 pancakes. The Pitbulls next challenge is against another Metro East Divisional opponent the Long Island Tribe (1-1). Kick off is set for 2 pm at Roosevelt HS this Saturday July 26th.
PITBULLS COMEBACK TO WIN SEASON OPENER
The Long Island Pitbulls traveled out to Granny Rd. Park in Gordon Heights to take on the Long Island Panthers for the first time in franchise history. The Panthers who came from the United Football League took on the 2007 R.A.F.L. sleeper, Pitbulls.
The Pitbulls opened up the scoring when Byron “B-Ron” Eason (5 carries for 39 yards 2 TD’s) took the hand off outside and went 19 yards for the dogs first Touchdown of the season. After the ball went thru the post the Pitbulls were up 7-0. On the ensuing defensive series, Rayquan Waiters made an acrobatic interception to give the offense back the ball deep in their own territory. On the fifth play of the drive Steve Newman (7-10, 198 yds, 2TD’s) went deep to “B-Ron” for an 82 yard touchdown strike. After a blocked kick the Pitbulls went up 13-0.
The defensive line who was getting consistent pressure on the Panther quaterback all day caused him to force a pass to a deep receiver and that is when Ray Waiters took a giant leap to the sky and came down with his second interception on the day. However the Pitbulls would give the ball right back on the next play at their own 5 yard line. After three tough defensive stops the Panthers went for it on 4th down and scored the 6. The Panthers kicker missed the PAT and the Pitbulls had the lead 13-6 going into half.
The Panthers were the first to strike in the second half on a 36 yard touchdown pass. After a successful 2 point conversion the Panthers were in the lead 14-13 going into the fourth quarter.
On the first possession of the fourth quarter, Newman would bring his team down the field and connect with Rodney Myrick (5 receptions for 89 yards, 1 TD) for a 29 yard completion to put the Black & Gold up 19-14. Being up only 5 the Pitbulls had to go for the 2 point play in which they were unsuccessful.
The Defense that was led by LB Dennis Woody (6 tackles) & DB Mike Novemebre (6 tackles) kept the Panther “O” deep in their own territory and forced a 3 & out. After a poor punt the Pitbulls had the ball at the Panther 26 yard line. Seven plays later Newman would hand off again to Eason who did a “Lambeu Leap” into the endzone for the 1 yard Touchdown. Don Bonacorsa kicked in the X-tra point to make the score 26-14.
The Panthers had one more shot at coming back late in the game, but the “D” once again shut down any hopes of a possible comeback.
After the game Coach Khalid Merritt said “The O & D Line is the back bone of this team, and what gives us victory”. Byron “B-Ron” Eason who had 119 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns, was named Offensive MVP & Rayquan Waiters was named Defensive MVP for his 2 tackles and 2 interceptions for the day.
The 1-0 Pitbulls will face another Long Island team, the New York Demon Knights (0-1) this Saturday at Roosevelt High School.Kick-off is set for 2 pm.
