Tee-d Off Your Little One Can't Play?
As late as 2005, there was not a specified age that a child had to be to play Knothole baseball in District 14 (Lower/East/West Price Hill, Covedale, Sedamsville, Riverside, Sayler Park, Delhi Township and parts of Green Township & Westwood). Then, in 2006, they ruled that you had to be 5 years of age, by May 1st, to be eligible. In 2007, that rule became age 6 by November 1st. Finally, in 2008, the rule was set that any boy or girl MUST be 6 by May 1st of that year!
We, at the Price Hill Athletic Association, said, "Enough is enough! 4 & 5 year olds can play and have proven it." This is why we created the Westside Stars. Unlike other programs for toddlers, this vehicle allows children from all regions, all religions, and teaches a modified version of the Class D-noncompetitive game the kids will play once they turn 6. Modified? Sure! First, we use safety balls, instead of real baseballs - players, just starting out, don't need bruises and missing teeth to discourage them. Second, D-non only allows 7 pitches, then the kid strikes out, if they don't hit the ball fair. We still have the coaches pitch to the kids, but if they don't make contact, we bring a tee out, so they can still hit and run toward First Base!
Year One was a huge success. Several players graduated up to play Knothole, or Cincinnati Western Baseball (Catholic league), in 2009. One young man even skipped the noncompetitive division and went straight to Class D! Year Two brought a fresh pool of young talent and the Class of 2009 should make a huge impact on the baseball world in 2010. Those still too young will get another year of seasoning and be all that much more ready for 2011.
Kids are divided into teams. Once they learn the basics and ready for game play, teams are matched up and it's "Play Ball!" to put what they learned to the test. Practices & games are on Friday evenings from 6 PM until the kids wear out (usually 7:30)! Players get an official jersey with their number and first name, plus a cool, haloed "S" cap. Not only that, but they get all of the great things the bigger kids get - a day with the Cincinnati Steam, a day with the Reds, the Thanksgiving Day Parade, etc.
