Lady Braves Win Tulpehocken Holiday Tournament
December 29, 2011 —
The PV girls basketball team continued their early season success on the road with two more wins in Berks County at the Tulpehocken Holiday Tournament. The Braves are now 6-2 on the road and 6-3 overall on the season as they prepare to enter section play in the new year.
The Braves brought home the trophy with a 53-39 victory in a rematch against the Antietam Lady Mounts. The girls jumped out to an early 22-9 lead on the Mounts, but were unable to finish the game off early as Antietam clawed back into it with a barrage of three-pointers (they hit 9 in the game). Despite being up by as many as 16 in the first half, the Braves found themselves clinging to a two point lead in the third quarter. It was then that the clutch shooting of Heather Lockard and the relentless attacking of the hoop by Kayla Wallace took over to weather the storm and pull away for the championship trophy. Lockard finished with 13 points, and Wallace had 18. Kasey Williams continued to stuff the stat sheet by scoring 7 points, grabbing 7 boards, dishing out 5 assists, and coming up with 4 steals. Sarah Hovis led the team in rebounding with 10, and Alexis Angelucci continued her stellar low post play with 7 points and 7 rebounds.
In the opening round, the Braves used an extremely balanced inside/outside attack to hold off the pesky squad from Schuykill Haven by a score of 46-36. Despite a slow start, the Braves were able to finish when it mattered. Every time that Haven cut the lead to within striking distance, someone for the Braves would step up and hit a shot to regain momentum. Leading the team in scoring were Lockard and Hovis with 9 a piece, and Wallace and Angelucci added 8 each. Williams and Alyssa Maxwell also added 5 points each. Angelucci led the team in rebounding with 12, Hovis had 10, and Williams added 8. Williams also dished out 5 assists, while Wallace handed out 3. Maxwell led the team in steals with four.
Kayla Wallace was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, and Kasey Williams was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Braves reenter the action in 2012 by returning home for a game against section rival Annville Cleona on Tuesday, January 3rd. Please come out and fill the Red Zone in support of the Lady Braves!

Lady Braves Suffer Two Close Losses to Section 3 Standouts
As the holiday season nears each year, the L-L begins the first half of "crossover" play – when the sections face off against each other. The Braves season schedule dictated that their first two games would be against two of the contenders for the section three title – Nothern Lebanon and Manheim Central. Both squads made runs at the section 3 title last year, and both squads returned all 5 of their starters.
At Northern Lebanon, the Braves pushed the Vikings down to the wire, leading in the fourth early and having opportunities to tie the game late. In the end, clutch free throw shooting by NL (6-6 in the final 90 seconds) and late misses by the Braves proved to be the final difference. Kayla Wallace had 14 points and 8 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth, and Alexis Angelucci had 5 points and 10 rebounds. PV held a 42-27 rebound edge on the night, as they continue to battle teams on the boards. Sarah Hovis had another double-digit rebounding performance with 10, and Kasey Williams added 7 from the point guard position. The final score was NL 37, PV 27.
The girls returned home on Tuesday night after playing their first five contests on the road. They faced an impressive Manheim Central squad, which relied on stellar outside shooting to consistently thwart PV rallies in the second half. Again the Braves led late, and again their opponents answered with clutch shots. Despite big threes hit by Kasey Williams and Heather Lockard, MC used treys by their point guard (who had 6 threes in the game) to pull ahead. Kayla Wallace continued to demonstrate that she can be offensive force to be reckoned with by pumping in a career-high 21 points. Alexis Angelucci had a monster game in the post, despite being faced with early foul trouble. She hit numerous big baskets in the fourth, and ended the contest with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Williams scored 12 points and added 4 assists. Sarah Hovis added 9 rebounds and played a big role in holding the Barons' top scorer in check for the game. The final score was MC 57, PV 53.
The Pequea Valley Lady Braves return to action at Donegal in their final leg of the early-season crossover schedule on Thursday and will look to put a stop their two-game skid.
Early Season Summary:
* 3 wins, 3 losses * Leading Scorer – Kayla Wallace, 12.7 points per game * Leading Rebounders – Sarah Hovis, 9 rebounds per game and Alexis Angelucci, 7.8 rebounds per game * Steals Leader – Kasey Williams, 2.5 steals per game * Assists Leader – Kasey Williams, 3.8 assists per game * PV Scoring – 40.2 points per game * PV Defense – holding opponents to 31.8 points per game.
Pequea Valley 54, Lancaster Country Day 14
The Lady Braves continued their season-opening road trip by traveling to Lancaster Country Day on Thursday afternoon. Using defensive pressure and stellar shooting from the outside, the girls were able to jump out to an early lead and cruise to their third victory on this young season. Kayla Wallace scored 14 points by hitting array of jumpers and shots off of dribble penetration. She hit six of her seven shots from field. Sophomore Mady Reeser continued to be a spark off the bench, as she went a perfect 3-3 from downtown on her way to 11 points. Positives were everywhere to be found for the Braves – Heather Lockard had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Kasey Williams had 6 points and 4 assists while continuing to provide intense defensive pressure. Sarah Hovis had 8 rebounds, and Alexis Angelucci was a force in the paint as she scored 8 points and grabbed 6 boards. The team shot 52% from the floor and held themselves to 10 turnovers.
The Braves continue the journey tonight at Northern Lebanon in the opening contest of section crossover play.
Pequea Valley 29, Oxford 22
The Lady Braves traveled to Chester County to face off against AAA Oxford on Tuesday night in a contest that turned out to be a defensive struggle. Using a collapsing defense to attempt the neutralize Oxford's 6'0" center, PV was able to shut down their offensive attack. The Braves had 35 rebounds on the night, being led by Sarah Hovis with 11 and Alyssa Maxwell with 7. Offensively, PV was paced by the early strong play of senior point guard Kasey Williams and her relentless attacking of the hoop. She led all scorers in the contest with 12 points and she added 5 assists. Holding only a 2-point lead entering halftime, the Braves used 5 big points in the third quarter from sophomore guard Heather Lockard to begin to pull away. This helped to provide a 7-point edge entering the fourth quarter and gave the appearance that PV was pulling away. However, late turnovers allowed Oxford to cut the lead to 4 with 2 minutes remaining. PV's defense managed to hold, and Williams knocked down 3 late free throws to ice the victory.
The Pequea Valley Lady Braves record now stands at 2-1, and they reenter the action tomorrow afternoon at Lancaster Country Day. Please come out and support your Lady Braves!
Lady Braves Take 2nd Place in Octorara Tip-off Tournament
he PV girls basketball squad opened up their 2011-2012 season in a familiar spot – the Octorara Tip-off Tournament. On Friday night, the Braves overmatched Antietam by a score of 50-24 to advance to the championship game. The Braves caused 22 turnovers with their defensive effort, and were able to convert their extra opportunities into points on the offensive end. Kayla Wallace led the scoring with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Kasey Williams played an excellent all-around game through her contribution of 8 points, 6 steals, and 5 assists. Alexis Angelucci and Sarah Hovis added 7 and 6 points respectively from the post positions.
On Saturday the Braves faced a tough and scrappy Octorara squad. Using an excellent defensive effort by Heather Lockard, PV was able to keep their leading scorer in check throughout the evening. Despite trailing by 3 in the third, Octorara began to pull away by forcing turnover after turnover out of the Lady Braves. They sealed up their championship victory in their own tip-off tournament by a score of 37-27. Kayla Wallace again paced the Braves scoring attack with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
