Cards lose to Middleboro in last game of year
    July 28, 2009

A night where all the pieces seemed to fall into place for the Cardinals lineup, they couldn't finish their unexpected playoff push as they dropped their 4th game of the season to Middleboro, 3-0.
Kyle Ritchie threw 6 innings allowing only 6 hits and 3 earned runs with 4 strikeouts. Pat Nicholson went 2 for 3 with 2 singles while Steve Doyle was 1 for 3 with a double.

The Cardinals finish the season(again) with an overall record of 11-19 and 2-0 against non-league opponents.
Keep an eye out on the site for Photo updates courtesy of Mr. Vigneau. Also we will keep updating on any Cardinals news as far as player progress at their respective colleges and any coaching changes that could occur.

    Thanks for a great season!

15 hits leads to Cardinals win
    July 26, 2009

With one run scored in the first, the Cardinals started this game off right. Jason Thompson came into the game with plenty of rest to only allow 2 runs in 6 innings of work. A scary 7th was nothing to worry about as Rockland sealed up the 9-6 victory at home.

Steve Doyle was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored while John Keating went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and Matt Roache was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Mark McGinnis scored three times for the Cardinals and every starter had a hit in the victory.

The Cardinals will be in action on Tuesday evening. More information will be disclosed later.

Rockland splits on Day 1 of Tourney
    July 25, 2009

"The Tory Summey Show" was in town as the Cardinals bounced back from a game one loss to Easton and showed the Hockomock League they deserved to be in the tourney.

With a 9-0, 5 inning win Summey did it all striking out ten allowing no runs, while stopping two hard shots back up the middle and also stroking a 2-RBI double to left field.

With the win, Rockland will play FRANKLIN CLARMACS of the Hockomock League at Rockland Stadium. The game is SCHEDULED for 3:30pm but will take place 30 minutes after the Weymouth Phillies finish up playing Westcott from Rhode Island.

    Cardinals are IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!!
    STAN MUSIAL MA/RI District Bracket 2009 July 24, 2009

As luck would have it the Rockland Cardinals are back in playoffs for an 8th consecutive year, despite having to back in twice in the past four seasons.

Saturday afternoon at 12pm @ Frothingham Park in Easton, the Cardinals will be playing the first game of the double-elimination tournament. They will either be taking on the North Reading A's of the North Shore League or the Blackstone A's of the Hockomock League.
The game will be the first of a guaranteed two games on Saturday and could be the first of many depending on how many wins the Cardinals can pull off through the MA/RI District Tournament.

ATTENTION ALL PLAYERS: Please let Coach Dolan or Matt Roache know of your availability so we can field a solid team for tomorrow. I understand that the short notice is a problem but let's get a few more wins under our belt before the summer ends.

Middleboro takes game in bottom of the 7th
    July 19, 2009

Rockland got off on the right foot with 2 runs early off a Mark McGinnis single to left that plated Sean Smolinsky and Eric Salvador. Middleboro bounced right back scoring 3 runs in the bottomf of the first off of Rockland pitcher Kyle Ritchie.

The Cardinals tied it up in the top of the 2nd on a John Phelan sacrifice fly with the bases load. One of Smolinsky's three hits on the day came in the top of the fifth where he followed it by stealing second, getting bunted over to third and a Salvador sacrifice fly gave the Cardinals the lead. The lead was short lived as Middleboro answered with one run in the bottom of the inning and then a game-winning single in the bottom of the 7th to take the 5 - 4 win.

Rockland finishes the regular season on Tuesday night at Frothingham Park in Easton, MA at 6pm.

    Rockland beats South Shore 3 - 2
    July 18, 2009

After losing 8-1 to Easton and 5-0 to Braintree, the two top place teams in the league, the Rockland Cardinals could have easily sat back on a sweltering Saturday afternoon and let South Shore walk all over them. Not the case.

Pitcher Steve Oehlschlaeger let up one run in the first and basically cruised thru the rest of the game only allowing four hits and two runs in the complete game win. With three hits in the second inning, Rockland tacked on its first of three runs when John Keating plated Grady Vigneau on a single to left field.

The top of the order led off the 5th and produced when John Phelan dropped a bunt single up the first base line and soon scored on Eric Salvador fielder's choice. Salvador scored when Dave Dickerson stroked a single to center to produce the Cardinals game-winning run.

Some highlights from the last home game of the season were Salvador's "SUBS" on the lineup card and Keating's bat toss that found its way to the Cardinals dugout.

The Cardinals will be at Middleboro at noon on Sunday afternoon.

    Foxboro take rubber game
    July 15, 2009

The Knights of Foxboro came in looking for a big win to keep their playoff hopes alive and that's exactly what they got. They didn't truly earn it however as costly mistakes in the field in the fourth inning really gave Foxboro a lead they didn't look back on.

Rockland showed a little life in the bottom of the 7th scoring four runs overall with three crossing on a Grady Vigneau double to left.

The Cardinals are going to need to keep the bats going as the league-leading Easton Huskies comes into town on Thursday.

ATTENTION: Thursday game NOW @ ROCKLAND
    July 13, 2009

THE GAME SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY NIGHT (7/16) AT EASTON HAS BEEN MOVED TO ROCKLAND STADIUM AND WILL BEGIN AT 6pm.

Cardinals drop two on a Sunday afternoon
    July 12, 2009

The Rockland Cardinals put Kyle Ritchie on the mound and with a little offensive support the Cardinals stayed in the game. Ritchie let up two runs in the first, a run in the third, and a run in the sixth on just four hits in six innings of work.

The Cardinal offense looked alive in this game as they posted three runs early and matched Weymouth's run in the sixth. Steve Doyle and John Keating led the 2nd off with back-to-back singles. Matt Roache laid down a sacrifice bunt and a Sean Smolinsky single and John Phelan sacrifice fly gave Rockland the 3-2 lead.

The Cardinals couldn't produce any runs in the bottom of the 8th as they went on to lose 5-4.

Game two started off as a pitching duel with Steve Oehlschlaeger throwing 5 innings of 2 hit baseball while striking out five and not walking a single batter. Rockland gave up 3 runs in the 6th and couldn't recover as Weymouth took the game 3-0. Eric Salvador was 3 for 3 in the game for the Cardinals.

Cardinals drop rubber game to Cape Cod
    July 9, 2009

Pitcher Matt Mullen allowed just one earned run in 6 innings pitched but the Cardinals couldn't produce any runs of their own en route to the 4 - 0 deficit to Cape Cod. The Cardinals continue their season on Sunday July 12th at 1pm when they take on the Weymouth Phillies in a doubleheader at Rockland Memorial Stadium.

    Doubleheader split in walk-off fashion
    June 29, 2009

The Rockland Cardinals came into Sunday's games with two wins on the mind but were quieted early.
In game one, John Phelan was the lone hit for the Cardinals in the top of the 6th with a runner on first. No runs were produced from that as Brockton took game one 5 - 0. Brian Hill and Grady Vigneau split pitching duties for Rockland.

The Dirtdogs kept their bats going into game two taking a 3 - 0 lead thru four. Rockland came alive in the bottom of the inning with a Phelan lead-off single followed by a single to right field by Eric Salvador. Designated-hitter Dave Dickerson and catcher Mark McGinnis came to the plate both with RBI singles to get the Cardinals on the board.
Rockland tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and eventually send it to extra innings. As Tory Summey was taking care of Dirtdog hitters, Vigneau came to the plate and took care of Brockton's relief pitcher slapping a bases-loaded single to left field giving the Cardinals the 5 - 4 victory.

Rockland travels to Middleboro on Wednesday to take on the Middleboro Bolts at 6pm.

Easton takes game from Cardinals, 5 - 3
    June 25, 2009

The Cardinals held a 3 - 1 lead behind starter Matt Mullen heading into the 7th inning but couldn't hold on as the Easton Huskies managed four runs in the top half of the innings to take the 5 - 3 lead.

Sean Smolinsky was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Pat Nicholson went 2 for 3 with two singles in his first game back from the DL.

Cards finally back in action with comforting win over Dirtdogs
    June 24, 2009

Coach Dolan set the tone pre-game for Rockland letting the guys know it was practically a must win situation due to the sub .500 record and plenty of make-up games coming their way.

Rockland responded early to Coach by tacking on a quick run in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Steve Doyle. Rockland then allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the inning before regaining their lead in the top of the second with an RBI groundout by John Phelan and RBI single by designated hitter Grady Vigneau.

Rockland's Jay Thompson threw 6 inning complete game improving to 2 - 1 on the season and taking wins in his last two starts. Thompson allowed 4 earned on 7 hits and only allowing 2 walks. Doyle had quite the day going 3 for 4 with a double, two singles while posting and RBI and run scored. The Cardinals had batters 1-6 post an RBI while 5-9 scored a run each.

    Another Game Cancelled
    June 23, 2009

"The ducks are floatin'..." - Co-owner Joe Reis

Today's game in Rockland against Foxboro has already been postponed as there are indeed ducks floating in right field at Rockland Stadium. Tomorrow at Brockton is still up in the air so check back here tomorrow for updates.

Also a plea of some sorts for these four make-up games plus the remainder of the regular season... we are going to need bodies, and plenty of them. We don't have the make-up dates squared away yet because of the number of games opposing teams have to make-up but we will get them and when we do we are going to need an all hands on deck type deal.

Hopefully we get going tomorrow, see ya then.

    Father's Day Doubleheader Cancelled
    June 21, 2009

Another cancellation for the Cardinals as rain has gotten the best of them yet again. Enjoy the day.

The Cardinals are back in action three days in a row this coming week when they take on Foxboro at home on Tuesday night. They will also face off against the Brockton Dirtdogs and Easton Huskies for the first time this year come Wednesday and Thursday.

Cards snap drought with some TOWER POWER!
    June 16, 2009

It's not fair to the players that made an appearance on Tuesday night to call this 3-2 victory a surprise, but for Coach Roache it was just that.

Jay Tower was beyond solid in his first start of the year throwing a 6-hit complete game allowing NO WALKS and only one earned run. A highlight that should be noted was maintaining Braintree's 3 thru 5 hitters to only 2 hits and 3 K's.

Offensively, the Cardinals got on the board in the second when John Keating walked and Mark McGinnis singled leading to a sacrifice bunt and another walk before leadoff hitter David Rivera knocked in two on his second hit in as many innings. In the third, Grady Vigneau doubled and later scored on a Braintree miscue giving Rockland the lead they never let up.

The two teams will meet up again on Thursday night June 18th at Rockland Memorial Stadium at 7:30pm.

    TO CARDINALS PLAYERS
    June 9, 2009

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR MONEY TO TONIGHTS GAME or TOMORROW NIGHTS GAME. THE SHIRTS and SHORTS SHOULD BE IN THIS WEEK AND YOU WILL ONLY RECEIVE YOUR ORDER IF YOU PAY.

    Middleboro steals two from Rockland
    June 14, 2009

Middleboro stole two from the Cardinals on Sunday evening shutting them out in both games. The stats didn't lie in game one of the doublheader as Middleboro's pitcher threw a one-hitter. Don't be confused though as the Cardinals had men in scoring position three times in the later innings but pitching won the battle each time.

In game two the Cardinals came out swinging getting two hits in each of the first three innings all with one out or less on the board. Again pitching seemed to win the battle as the Cards were shutout in both games today and have scored only five runs in their last four games.

The Cardinals are in for a tough test this week when they face two undefeated teams in Braintree (Tues and Thurs night) and Easton (Sunday double).

Questionable loss results in 3 straight for Cards
    June 11, 2009

Holding a 3 - 1 lead into the top of the 7th inning the Cardinals victory was well in hand, or so it was thought. A game-changing double off the bat of a Canton player cleared the loaded bases and gave Canton the lead they once owned. Canton tacked on a fifth run and didn't look back, taking the 5 - 3 comeback victory over Rockland.

    Braintree Hands Loss to Cardinals
    June 9, 2009

Tonight wasn't all that pretty starting with the weather and ending with the game being called due to "darkness" again in the middle of the 6th.

However, Rockland jumped out to an early lead over the favored Braintree White Sox with 2 runs on 2 hits in the top of the 3rd inning. Sean Smolinsky started things off with a one out walk and advanced to second on a roped single by shortstop John Phelan. The hot-hitting Eric Salvador stepped to the plate and dropped a double into right center, scoring Smolinsky and putting Phelan at third. Grady Vigneau put a ball back up the middle that the second baseman fielded and got the out at first while Phelan managed to score. That was all the luck Rockland had in them for the day as the bottom of the third brought on nothing to write home about.

A miscalculated fly ball started things off for Braintree and they took the lead on a 'Missed It By That Much' single that gave them a lead they need not look back on en route to the 7 - 2 win over Rockland.

Cards split on a Sunday afternoon under Coach Roache
    June 7, 2009

The Cardinals played two close games totaling 17 innings with the Foxboro Knights in Foxboro, MA on Sunday afternoon. Rockland took game one 4 - 2 and then lost a tough one, 3 - 2, in 10 innings in the second game.
In game one, Jason Thompson took the hill in his good ol' fashioned way getting the complete game 5 K victory allowing only 2 earned runs on 5 hits. The Cardinals scored a run in each of the first three innings to take an early 3 - 1 lead into the 6th. Foxboro scored a run but stranded a runner at third cutting the lead to 3 - 2 heading into the top of the 7th. Rockland added an insurance run when shortstop John Phelan singled and stole a base before Eric Salvador stepped up to single him in. Thompson and the Cardinals held on for the 4 - 2 win.

Pat Martin made his first start of the season in game two going 3 solid innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4. Brian Hill gave up 2 runs in the 5th that gave the Knights a 2 - 1 lead. They held the lead into the top of the seventh when Phelan decided to do the work by himself. After reaching on a second baseman's error Phelan proceeded to steal 2nd and 3rd base leading to his uncontested crossing of the plate when Salvador grounded out to shortstop thus tying the game at two apiece. Tory Summey pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th inning allowing only one hit and 0 runs despite a bases loaded jam in the 8th. Despite the long battle by everyone on the squad, Foxboro led off the 10th loading the bases. With the infield in Rockland managed a groundball out at the plate before a bloop single to center sealed the game.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday night at Braintree High School where they will take on the Braintree White Sox at 6pm.

UPDATE: Artie Posch heads to NECBL
    June 5, 2009

Catcher Artie Posch from Brandeis University has been acquired by the Pittsfield American Defenders of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Posch started in three of the Cardinals first seven games hitting .500 with one double, one RBI, and one run scored on the year. Posch finishes his time with the Cardinals with two 2-hit games going 2 for 3 in back to back nights.

    Good luck Artie!

In other news, John Sills from College of the Holy Cross finished his tenure in the Cape Cod Baseball League and is headed to the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Sills will be getting his reps in Rhode Island for the Newport Gulls, who kicked off their season at Manchester and lost the game 1 - 0. Sills went 0 for 2 with a walk in the opener.

Cardinals lose in darkness shortened game
    June 3, 2009

Rockland was taking the right strides against Canton's relief pitcher in the top of the 6th inning when heading into the bottom of the inning the umpires called the game due to darkness. It was a questionable call and one that will hopefully be reviewed by league officials but until that time... the Cards take the loss 7 - 5.

Grady Vigneau and Artie Posch continued their hitting ways knocking in lead-off hitter Sean Smolinsky and number two hitter Eric Salvador to get Rockland rolling in the top of the first. Cards pitcher Brian Hill got out of a jam with runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom half of the inning to keep the Cardinals ahead. The 2nd inning then saw Canton post 5 runs in the midst of 3 doubles that would give them a lead they never looked back on.

Salvador was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and a run scored while Smolinsky and Posch were both 2 for 3 in the game for Rockland. They are back in action Wednesday night when they host the red-hot Braintree White Sox at Rockland Stadium @ 7:30pm.

Cards fend off A's despite late scare
    June 1, 2009

The first of two nights in Canton started off quick as both teams motored thru the first four innings of the game with no runs scored and limited scoring chances for either club. The game opened up in the top of the 5th when catcher Artie Posch led off with a double to left-center followed by a single and steal by Grady Vigneau. Steve Doyle then drew a walk to load the bases. Matt Roache poked a single to left field scoring Posch and the Canton starter seemed to lose his edge, walking three of the next four batters plating a run each time.

With the 4 - 0 lead Cardinals starter Kyle Ritchie held Canton scoreless thru 5 innings before they plated three runs in a row with only one out in the sixth. Ritchie battled thru and got the final two outs of the inning. Ritchie then retired the side in order in the bottom of the 7th closing out the game in his first start and win of the year.

Posch and Vigneau were both 2 for 3 with a run scored in the game for the Cardinals.

Cards take two from Warriors on Sunday night
    May 31, 2009

The Rockland Cardinals took two games from the South Shore Warriors on the last day of May. The Cardinals took game one in 8 innings 2 - 1, and game two 7 - 2.

Game one put Matt Mullen on the hill for the Cards and he pitched 7 1/3 innings of 3 hit baseball only allowing one unearned run. Offensively, the Cardinals only produced 4 hits where two came in back to back fashion in the top of the 8th. Centerfielder Sean Smolinsky hit a single and moved along to second base before John Phelan hit an RBI double to give the Cards the 2 - 1 lead. Tory Summey entered the game with one out and one on in the bottom of the 8th to get his first save of the season.

Game two had some more offense as the Cardinals had 7 hits and plating 7 runs. First baseman Dave Dickerson went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, a walk and 2 RBI. Matt Roache went 2 for 3 with 2 singles, a walk and 2 RBI. Pitching for the Cardinals was Steve Oehlschlaeger, who picked up his first win of the season in a complete game effort allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 7 K's.

Rockland is back in action on Monday night at Canton High School where they will take on the Canton A's at 6pm. They will be playing again on Tuesday at Canton at 6pm.

    Former Cards Movin' On Up
    May 30, 2009

Going to a Cape Cod Baseball League game this summer? Taking a trip to New York any time this summer?
If you do... remember these names: Jon Sills, Steve Golbranson, Ed Bleiler, and Tommy Chase.

Jon Sills played in a majority of the Cardinals games at shortstop through the 2007 season and was ready to make a come back this year before being invited to play for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball Leage. Sills, a native of Milton, recently finished his junior year at Holy Cross and hopes to earn a summer long spot down on the Cape.

Steve Golbranson, of Abington, was with the Cardinals in 2007 and 2008 and planned on rejoining as a starting pitcher before his invite to the New York Collegiate Baseball League's (NYCBL) Brockport Riverbats. Golbranson started the 2009 season for the Southern New Hampshire University Penman.

Ed Bleiler, of Lincoln, was the Cardinals catcher for all but one game last year and was a defensive presence behind the plate all year. Bleiler, soon to be a junior at Holy Cross, was invited to play for the Geneva Red Wings this summer in the NYCBL.

Tommy Chase, of Cohasset, was a starter for the Cardinals at shortstop last year when he wasn't playing for his legion team. Chase spent his first year in college at the University of Notre Dame where he got a decent amount of innings in the infield. Chase will get a chance to play with Bleiler on the Geneva Red Wings in New York.

The Cardinals organization is always proud to see former players move onto new leagues where they have opportunities to get scouted and drafted to the big leagues. Congrats guys!!! We hope to be sharing some more good news down the road about each of you!!

PICTURED from LEFT to RIGHT: Bleiler, Chase, Sills, Golbranson

    Phillies hand loss to Cardinals
    May 28, 2009

The 2009 home-opener for the Rockland Cardinals started off on the right foot. Last years Cardinal pitching all-star, Jason Thompson, made his debut and Rockland pulled out to an early 1-0 lead after two innings. A lead-off triple in the top of the third kicked things off for Weymouth who never looked back after putting up four in that inning. Thompson threw 4 innings for the Cardinals while Brian Hill and Matt Mullen made their first appearances of the year in the 11 - 4 setback for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday night when they play host to the South Shore Warriors for a doubleheader starting at 5pm.

NOTE: Due to an overwhelming number of requests, the Web Gems of the Day were Bill Alexander's bare-handed on the run throw at third base that resulted in a few OOOH's and AAAH's from the Cardinal dugout AND defensive replacement Matt Roache's backhand play up the middle at second base in the top of the 7th inning.

    Cardinals Open Season with Split
    May 24, 2009

Buzzards Bay, MA - The 2009 season kicked off Sunday afternoon with the Rockland Cardinals traveling down to Massachusetts Maritime to take on the Cape Cod Braves. The brisk wind and light rain had no effect on the Cardinals starter Steve Oehlschlager as he threw a solid 6 innings to start his summer for Rockland allowing only 1 ER on 3 hits and striking out 13. The only downside to today's game was that his earned run was the lone run of the game as the Cape Cod Braves took game one by a score of 1-0 on a walk-off double.

Game two was a better outcome for Rockland with second year pitcher Pat Nicholson on the hill. The Cardinals bats woke up with an 11 hit attack with the 2 - 4 batters going 8 for 12 with 6 RBI's and 4 runs scored. Eric Salvador went 3 for 4 while Matt Hart was 3 for 5 with 3 stolen bases. Nicholson threw 6 innings allowing 3 hits, 4 walks, and striking out 5.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday night when they play host to the Weymouth Phillies. Fifth year starter Jason Thompson will take the hill for Rockland as they hope to start their three game home stand off on the right foot.

    600th Win Presentation
    May 19, 2009

On Monday evening, the Rockland Cardinals attended a Rockland Town Hall meeting for the presentation of the commemorative 600th Win Baseball, Certificate, and State Citation to local sponsors and town officials.
Cardinals co-owners Joe Reis and Thom Roache were given the floor to honor sponsors that have supported this organization for so many years. Roache asked representatives from each of their major supporters up to receive a game ball used during the 600th win game and a certificate of appreciation, along with a Citation issued by State Representative Bob Nyman. The organization would like to send their appreciation out once more to ALL of their sponsors for their on-going assistance in making this organization a continued success.

Let's recap the game that brought us to this momentous occasion. Thursday June 12th was originally scheduled to be a single game but was pushed to a 6pm start for a double-header in order to make up a game missed on June 4th. Win number 599 was a 6 - 1 victory for the Cardinals in the first game and win number 600 came on an 8 - 7 comeback victory in the nightcap.
The Cardinals winning pitcher was Rockland's own Matt Mullen allowing zero runs on four hits with four strikeouts in three innings of work. The Cardinals offense assisted in the Mullen victory as they were down 7 - 5 after three innings. Sean Smolinsky brought the Cards within one with an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th scoring Eddie Bleiler. League MVP Matt Hart stepped to the plate and knocked in the tying and game-winning run with a single to centerfield. Tory Summey closed out the game and took his first of five saves on the season, striking out one in his lone inning of work.
