Stand erect, or be helped to stand erect...  Life is more like wrestling than dancing, in that it should stand ready and firm to meet onsets, however unexpected.

Burn the Ships

"A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield.  He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own.  He loaded his soldiers into boat, sailed to the enemy's country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them.  Addressing his men before the first battle, he said, "You see the boats going up in smoke.  That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win!  We now have no choice we win or we perish!" They won.

"Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat.  Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN,  essential to success."

- Napolean Hill

Eight Keys To Being Successful

1.  Fear no opponent.  Respect every opponent.
2.  Remember,  It's the perfection of the smallest details that make big things happen.
3.  Keep in mind that hustle can cover up many mistakes.
4.  Be more interested in your character than your reputation.
5.  Be quick, but don't hurry.
6.  Understand that the harder you work, the more luck you will have
7.  Know that valid self-analysis is crucial for improvement
8.  Remember that there is no known substitute for hard work and careful planning.

Failing to plan is planning to fail

BE A DO-ER
The galleries are full of critics.  They play no ball.  They fight no fights.  They make no mistakes because they attempt nothing.  Down in the arena are the do-ers.  They make mistakes because they try many things.  The man who makes no mistakes lacks boldness and the spirit of advenure.  He is the one who never tries anything.  He is the brake on the wheel of progress.  And yet it cannot be truly said he makes no mistakes because the biggest mistake is the very fact that he tries nothing, does nothing, except criticize those who do things.

The emphasis of Al Pacino's speech in the move Any Given Sunday is that "Football is a game of inches".  The Rider Raiders know this all to well as they have lost 4 playoff games (3 quarter final games and one bi-district game) in the last four years by "INCHES".

Al Pacino’s Inch by Inch Speech - edited - (from Any Given Sunday):

I don’t know what to say really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives all comes down to today.  Either we heal as a team or we are going to crumble.  Inch by inch, play by play, till we’re finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen, believe me and we can stay here and get the stuffen kicked out of us or
we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of the pits. One inch, at a time.

Now I can’t do it for you. I’m too old. I look around and I see these young faces and I think, I mean I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make. I uh….I threw away all my money believe it or not.
I chased off anyone who has ever loved me. And lately, I can’t even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life things get taken from you. That’s, that’s part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff. You find out that life is just a game of inches. So is football. Because in either game life or football the margin for error is so small. I mean one half step too late or to early you don’t quite make it.  One half second too slow or too fast and you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us.  They are in ever break of the game every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch. Cause we know when we add up all those inches that’s going to make the difference between WINNING and LOSING between LIVING and DYING.

I’ll tell you this, in any fight it is the guy who is willing to die who is going to win that inch. And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch because that is what LIVING is. The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can’t make you do it. You gotta look at the guy next to you. Look into his eyes. Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. You are going to see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows when it comes down to it, you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That’s a team, gentlemen and either we heal now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That’s football guys.
That’s all it is.  Now, Raiders whattaya gonna do?

Hold The Rope...

Every year a professional football team wins the Super Bowl.  Every year a college football team wins the NCAA title.  Every year the best high school team in Division 5A on down wins the state crown.  All these teams have one thin in common.  No matter how tough it gets throughout the season, they all do one thing - they "hold the rope!"

What is "holding the rope?"  Imagine that you're hanging from the edge of a 20-thousand-foot cliff and the only thing between you and a fall to your death is a rope, with the person of your choice on the other end.  Who do you know that has the guts to pull you to safety?  Who would "hold the rope?"  Who is going to let that rope burn in their hands and not let go?  How many people do you know that are going to withstand the burning pain and watch the blood drip from their hands for you?

If you can name two people, that's not good enough, because those two people might not be around.  The next time your team is together, look around and ask yourself, who can I trust to "hold the rope?"  Who is going to let their hands bleed for me?  When you can look at every member of your team and say to yourself that they would all "hold the rope", your are destined to win a lot of ball games.  You see, the team that "holds the rope" when the going gets tough are the winners!  When you are down by four points with thirty seconds to go, don't give up.  Yell at your teammates to "hold the rope."  Let it burn but don't let go.

Every year there are winners and loser in all sports.  Every year the winners "hold the rope."  You don't have to be the best team on the field to win the game.  If you play with poise and enthusiasm, do what your coaches ask of you, and most of all "hold the rope", you will be successful.  No matter what sport you play, in order to win, you have to make a committment to your team.  If you are supposed to hustle and pay attention in practice, do it.  If you have to lift weights four times a week, don't miss.  Once you start letting up at practice or start missing your workouts, you've killed the team because you didn't "hold the rope."  Make the right choices for yourself and your teammates.

DON'T LET YOUR TEAM DOWN.
BE A PART OF THE PRIDE!
HOLD THE ROPE!
