CATS TAKE TWO FROM CHIEFS AT NBT
JUNE 17,2013, The Salt Cats broke out of a three game losing streak in a big way against their rival, the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs. Colton Montgomery led the Salt Cats in the matinee and a home run in the evening cap of a double header helped the Salt Cats sweep the twin bill over the Jr. Chiefs, 7-2 and 6-5 at NBT Bank Stadium. Montgomery (Georgia State) nearly took down the Jr. Chiefs on his own in game one. He doubled twice and drove in four runs in each of his first two at bats. The Salt Cats banged out 11 hits, two of them by Zach Carlino (Mount Union) who had a two run single in the fifth inning. Mike DeCarr (Cortland State) added four hits and scored three times. Ian Drapcho (Walsh University) made his first start of the season and threw five innings of one hit ball. He walked seven and struck out five while allowing just one earned run. Shane Cochran (Saginaw Valley) threw three scoreless innings in relief of Drapcho, allowing just four hits and a walk. Ray Messner (Ave Maria) picked up a save by getting two big outs in the ninth inning with the tying run on deck and two on. Tyler Barrett (Central Connecticut) helped Montgomery with the offensive load in game two as he hit a monster blast over the left center field wall at NBT. While Montgomery had two more hits and an RBI, Barrett drove in Anthony Massicci (Canisius) who was pinch running for Montgomery with his two run bomb to left. Carlos Guzman (Molloy) added some big runs in the sixth inning with a two run triple to right that capped off a four run inning for the Salt Cats. Those two runs proved to be the winning runs. Guzman also singled and scored in the third. Mike Mascari (Oswego) and Ben Sawyer (Alvernia) provided back to back doubles in the second to give the Salt Cats a 1-0 lead. Messner worked overtime and redefined what a save really means in game two. After coming in and diffusing the situation with a save in game one, he worked the final 1.1 innings in game two, allowing two runs and a hit. He earned his second save of the day. Max Schonfeld (Molloy) went five strong innings, allowing a run on six hits. He earned his third win in as many starts this season. His third win of the year ties him for the single season Salt Cats record in that category. The Salt Cats welcome the Niagara Power to Syracuse on Tuesday at 5pm from Le Moyne College’s Rockwell Field.
