Sandiacre get the runners up spot to Derby County in the County Cup Final
Sandiacre found Derby County too strong in the 1st ever Derbyshire Ladies County Cup Final.
The opening stages of the match were closely fought, with Derby trying to get their neat passing game going, but Sandiacre not allowing them to settle and pressing them all over the pitch. Both sides forged openings in the first quarter of an hour without ever creating a real opportunity to go ahead, but it was Derby who went ahead in the 19th minute when the excellent Melissa Johnson scored from 12 yards with a left footed shot to the keeper’s right.
The game remained close, with Derby having the lion’s share of the possession, but a 3-goal burst in six minutes before half-time effectively sealed the Cup. First, Captain Lorna Abbey scored with a header from Sam Griffiths’ deep cross in the 37th minute, before two further goals in two minutes from Melissa Johnson. The first, in the 41st minute, was a sublime curling shot into the far corner from the edge of the area, before two minutes later she completed her hat-trick when she turned the ball home from close range.
Just after half time, the fifth goal came when Cara Newton hit an unstoppable right footed shot across goalkeeper Kim Jeffrey into the bottom corner. A minute later, Sandiacre carved out their best chance of the match when Natalie Loughenbury saw her great effort go inches over the crossbar.
Twenty minutes from time, Cara Newton added her second goal of the game to complete a 6-0 victory, and when referee Leaning blew the final whistle, Derby County Ladies were crowned Derbyshire County FA Women’s Cup winners. Captain Lorna Abbey came forward last to lift the trophy and the celebrations began. Both the Derby and Sandiacre players and family members stayed on the pitch after the presentation and posed for photos together in a fitting end to a sporting final which was played in terrific spirit by both teams, and the all female refereeing team of Pam Leaning, Grace Harrison, Millie Hodson and Kulwinder Sidhu allowed the game to flow without ever getting too fussy or over-officious, and this ensured an extremely enjoyable afternoon for all concerned.
