Red Notice trailed the Mudcats the whole game and had no business winning it. After 3 innings the mighty Mudcats had a 4 run lead. The Mudcats hit the ball hard most all game and took advantage of a shaky Red defense. After every Red miscue seemed to come a big Mudcat hit or three. After the 6th inning and some of the same strong Mudcat hitting and Red miscues, the Mudcat's lead was still 4. In the open 7th Red scored 5 and took a 1 run lead, their 1st lead since the opening half inning. In the bottom half the Mudcats, thank goodness, went cold and Red was able to record three straight outs to win the game. For Red, Jeff Callahan and Clint Short went 4 for 4. Jason Maxwell and Paul Clay were 3 for 4 and Dan Friedell reached base 3 of 4 at bats. Red had home runs from Jason, Clint and Geoff McKenney..
----------------------------------

Red Notice scored 10 runs over the last two innings to overtake the Cats in a well-played game. Donnie Young went 4/4/4/4 on the night with a double and his 7th homer. Kevin Riley hit his 5th homer, a grand slam, and drove in 5. Bill Sullivan doubled and tripled but believes he was robbed of a homer by his third base coach.

Offense, by both teams and walks by Slimezilla pitchers were the highlights of this game.

The two teams were tied 23 to 23 going into the top of the 7th inning where White scored 7 runs and Slimezilla could only respond with 1.

Final score:  We're All White 30, Slimezilla 24.

The Small Hamburgers beat the Old Gray team last night in a competitive game. Sliders were ahead most of the game, but the grays came back and took a two run lead into the bottom of the ninth. The ageless wonder, Lowell lined a single to left to start the inning off and the Grays were not able to hold the Sliders off. Final score 16-15.  A well pitched game by both Willy and Greg.
---------------------

The Sliders limped into this game with various injuries. Anthony is still nursing a strained knee and Mike continues to feel his groin pull. Robert was out with a hammy strain and I injured my right shoulder at work on Wednesday morning and it was questionable whether I'd even be able to pitch on Thursday. Fortunately, I heal fast [assist goes to CBD] and by game time, I only felt a slight tug in my shoulder when I pitched. I pitched well considering I could barely lift my arm the previous night. Also injured, was Old Gray Guy, Chris Comen with what appeared to be a foot injury. [it didn't stop him from smacking the hell out of the ball though.]

Defensively we played well with a couple of miscues but our defense seems to be tightening up. Our recent acquisition, Jeff Herrera, held down 3rd base admirably and Nick is getting used to his role of moving around to various positions. He and Bruce are both playing multiple positions and doing them well
. It's possibly the hardest position of all... The Roamer.

The open inning had all you could ask for with the Sliders clinging to a slim 1 run lead. The Gray Fellows were not content to just lie down and proceeded to put up a 3-spot. With the bottom of our order leading off, as Mike said, Lowell slammed a line drive to left followed by Jim who made his only out of the game. Jake and Patrick both singled with Lowell scoring making it a 1 run game. Then Nick hit a deep fly to left that advanced both runners. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the next batter hit the ball over Gray's left fielder's head to score them both and give the Small Hamburgers a hard fought victory. Nice game Gray Dudes.

Notable Sliders bats: Jake Reid [4-4] Jeff Herrera and Mike Hamlette [2-2 with a BB] Jim McGovern [triple & HR] and Patrick Kurata [3-4] Willy, Cristian and Lowell [2-3].

And I have bad news for all the managers out there who are salivating over the thought of getting Jim McGovern in the next draft. He informed me that he is moving to Las vegas and this will be his last season with the Warriors. We're all sorry to see him go but at least I won't have to pitch to him anymore.

A desperate and understaffed Quit Your Pitching (QYP) tried very hard to notch their first win vs the Skully Doghairs last Thursday, but it wasn't to be. The hard hitting Dogs  banged out 30 hits en route to a 20 -14 victory.

The Dogs were perfect in the top of the first, scoring 5 runs before making a single out. The home team QYPs scored 3 in  the bottom half to make the score 5-3 after one. The determined Dogs again came back with 5 in the top of the second. A single by manager Gabe Delgado ignited a 5 run two-out rally with consecutive hits by Brian Cox (double), Scott Goldberg (double),  Mark Dushkin (single), Mark Goldstein (double), and Jorge Gurrola (single). The QYPs matched them by also scoring 5 in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 10-8 after two innings with the big hit being Caminetti's  3 run HR blast to deep left. Then the teams and their defenses tightened, with both teams posting shutouts in the 3rd and 4th innings. Sub Greg Morris at pitcher for the QYPs, cooled the hot Dogs bats.  But the Doghairs figured Morris out in the fifth and sixth innings.  In the fifth, they scored 5 with 9  hits, the biggest being doubles by Gurrola and Tripe. They added another 5 spot in the top of the sixth, with a walk and seven singles,  In the meantime,  the QYP bats were being tamed by Brian Cox as they only plated 2 in the bottom of each of the last three innings, to close out the scoring at 20-14.

The Doghairs were led on offense by Goldstein (4 runs), Gurrola (3 runs ), Dale Olsen (3 runs), and Jesse Nunez, each with 4 hits.  Scott Goldberg (2 doubles), Steve Tripe(double) and Dushkin each had 3 hits, while Ed Steiner, and manager Gabe Delgado both chipped in with two hits.

The defensive gems of the evening were a long run by the Doghair's LF Goldberg to make a last minute catch of a sinking liner in left, and the Doghairs  SS Goldstein who snagged two  Texas Leaguers in short left. The QYP's exciting play of the evening was made by Randy Cox whose right handed glove enabled the lefty SS to snare a sure hit in the hole with bases loaded off the bat of Jim Poage, and smoothly pirouette a throw to second to begin an inning-ending DP in the top of the third, quashing a Doghairs rally!!

Jerry Hermes & Rich LaFlamme retire from the Warriors

May 27, 2022

              Hermes                       LaFlamme

The two longest-tenured Warrior players in league history have announced their retirements from the league. Former Commissioner (2006-2016) Jerry Hermes retires after 28 years as a Warrior player (1994) and Rich LaFlamme retires after 27 years (1995). Both players expressed their affection for this league above all others in which they have played. Jerry will be continuing in his role as CFO for the league which includes paying the bills, collecting the fees and maintaining the Waiting List.

With these dual retirements, JOE FOX (1997) now becomes the current longest-tenured active Warriors player, with 25 years of play in our league. Joe is 3rd all-time in service time.

Reiteration of our "flip flop" rule

May 12, 2022

The Warriors' League's "flip flop" rule has been on the books for well over a decade. Our rule is that when the VISITING team has a lead of eight (8) runs or more after 5 1/2 innings of play, then the home team bats twice and the visitors then come up (if necessary) in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish the game.

The Warriors League does not permit side arangements between managers/umpires to contravene our rules regardless of the situation and regardless of the score. So, for example, if after 5 1/2 innings, the score is a worst-case scenario of 25-0 in favor of the home team, then that home team will indeed come to bat in the bottom of the 6th, with an opportunity to make it 30-0 if they can.

The visiting team batting last is the "flip-flop". Any scenario where the visiting team does not get the opportunity to bat last (if needed) is not a "flip-flop". We hope this clarifies our long-standing "flip flop" rule for everyone.

If you are already age 69, or will have your 69th birthday anytime during 2024, and your name does not already appear on our list in the "Headlines" link, please contact the league with this information.

Basepath safety issues

October 19, 2012

Our league would like to reiterate our rules regarding player safety on the basepaths. If everyone always followed these three simple rules we would have fewer basepath safety issues:

1. When running to first base, if a play is potentially going to be made on you (you hit a ground ball) you MUST run to the base that sits in FOUL territory while the first baseman uses the bag that sits in FAIR territory.
If you run to the wrong bag when a throw to first base is coming, you will be called OUT even if you beat the throw or even if the first baseman doesn't catch the throw. This rule has been listed in our rules for years. Our rules are available at "Warriors Specific Rules" which can be found by clicking on "pages" near the top of the welcome page.

2. When running from first base towards second base, all base runners MUST slide or avoid the second baseman or the shortstop covering the bag. We do not want player-to-player contact. Unavoidable contact during a clean slide is just a part of the game with which we have to live. Making contact with an infielder's upper torso while coming in standing up (contact with your shoulder, elbow, hip or knee) is entirely another story. Please slide into the bag or peel away.

3. When running from first base, if you are put out at second while you are still far away from the second base bag, GET OUT OF THE WAY and do not block the defensive player's throwing lane. You could get drilled unless the defensive player voluntarily opts to alter his throw so as to avoid your forehead.

As our former Commissioner Bob Johnson put it, if a player cannot go to work on Friday, because of something like this that happened with us on Thursday, then it was not a good night.

Top Fourteen Things To Know About the Warriors Softball League

1. Our primary reason for existence is to have fun in a safe way and build male friendships.
2. To accomplish that we only allow the use of league-furnished, ASA approved bats, in 26oz, 27oz, 28oz and 29oz weights. Any other bat, other than those provided by the league, is prohibited, except for players 69 years of age, or players turning 69 that year. These players may use any bat of their choosing. Currently we use the Mizuno "Craze" and the Mizuno "Frenzy" composite bats.
3. We use a 375/.44 polyurethane-core softball.
4. We re-draft teams each season, so players are not with the same teammates each and every season. Eventually, everyone plays with (and against) everybody else.
5. We have "AAA"-type tournament-quality players, and we have "A"-type recreational-quality players, and everything in between.
6. We have 45-year-old players and we have age 70+-year-players and every age in between.
7. We have a true draft, but even though we do not make promises or issue guarantees, we bend over backwards to make every effort to try to make special accommodations to players who need to be on the same team for whatever reason (siblings, carpool together from afar, etc.)
8. We allow the use of courtesy runners once a batter reaches first base.
9. Outfielders must station themselves behind an arc of orange cones until a ball is struck by a batter. If a batted ball touches the outfield grass, the batter can do no worse than a single and does not need to run/walk/crawl/get to first base. Batters may not be put out at first base on a throw from any outfielder.
10. We hire our own real paid umpires.
11. Every team participates in the first round of the post-season playoffs.
12. Every player receives a new shirt each season and it's theirs to keep forever. We do not issue faded, shrunken, ill-fitting hand-me-down shirts to our players.
13. The league hosts all players, from all teams, to a pizza party immediately after conclusion of each season's championship game, at no charge to the players. At the party, usually attended by 60-70 players, the Brad Betz Memorial Award is presented to the league's "best teammate". For information on this award, click on the Brad Betz tab on the left side of this homepage near the top.
14. All games have not only a fully-stocked first aid kit on site, but also a cardiac defibrillator at each backstop. Most league players have been trained on how to use it.
