Sharks make huge run in Adidas 64 Nationals & finish 2nd
August 1, 2006 The Indiana Sharks made a huge name for themselves in Las Vegas.

This team made up of southern Indiana stars once again more than proved that they have the talent and smarts to play with any players in the nation. Sharks end the summer with a 31-8 record. What a summer!

The under dog Sharks team, which was one of only teams in the Adidas Super 64 that was not a shoe company sponsored team started the tournament out by winning all three of it's pool play games over three very good summer programs.

Game one was a 76-62 victory over Los Angelas Rockfish. A very balanced attack.
Game two was a 71-70 win over the Virgina Gym Rats, as Logan Jones knocked down a pair of cluth free throws with 3 second on the clock to give the Sharks the win.
Game three was a 56-48 win over a very good Houston Hoops team, which was the favorite to win the pool.

The Sharks started the tournament out with a rival game against Derek Smith All-Stars which is a team based out of Louisville, Kentucky. The Sharks made quick work of the Kentucky team and pulled out a 74-60 victory. Kenny Edwards had two huge dunks on Dexter Heyman of Male and that set the tone early as the Sharks dominated from the get go. Logan Jones led the way with 14 points and Braydon Hobbs contributed 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists.

The Sharks next game was against 43 Hoops out of Minnesota. This team had beaten the Sharks earlier in the spring at the Adidas May Classic by 38 points. They were led by Anthony Tucker a 6'6" guard who is being heavily recruited Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The same Tucker who scored 36 points against the Sharks in Bloomington.
The Sharks played their best game of the summer. They knocked off the tournament favorite 64-56. Cameron Mousa was on fire and had his game of the tournament, as he was 5 of 5 from three point range and finished the game with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Braydon Hobbs also contributed 12 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals.
Kyle Kuric also contributed 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Leading scorer Logan Jones was limited to 6 points, as he was in foul trouble for much of the game and played limited minutes.
The key to the game was Braydon Hobbs sticking on Tucker the entire game and not letting him get any clean three point opportnities.
Tucker finished the game with 8 points. Hobbs did an amazing job on the defensive end.
Matt Lynch also hit 6 clutch free throws at the end to help preserve the win.

In the next round the Sharks beat a highly rated Kansas City Pump n Run team 66-53. This team was led by top Travis Releford who is rated in the top 20 players in the nation by most recruiting services. Logan Jones had one of his best performances of the summer going against Releford. Jones finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds and helped to limit Releford to 16 points in the huge win.
Hobbs also contributed 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists in the win.
Kyle Kuric had a nice game with 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Kenny Edwards had 8 points and 8 rebounds and had three very nice dunks.

In the semifinal the Sharks thumped an excellent DC Assault team out of Washington DC. Assault attempted to press the sharks and the SI team responded by jumping out to a 27-8 lead early. The Sharks knocked down 12 of their first 14 shots. Many set up by great assists from Braydon Hobbs.
Hobbs had 18 points, 11 asssists, and 11 rebounds. Mr. Gadget had once again a Triple/Double.
Logan Jones and Kyle Kuric both contributed 14 points apiece.

In the championship game the Sharks played Team Indiana. A team that has four players rated in the top 70 nationally and none of those four play high school ball in Indiana.Deandre Liggins(Illinois), Beas Hamga (Texas), Emanuel Negedu(New Hamshire), and Lewis Jackson (Illinois).
The Sharks jumped out to an early 12-7 lead, as Kyle Kuric scored the first 8 points of the game for the Sharks. That was about the only good news for the Sharks, as TI went on a 21-5 run after that.
This was closer than the final score 67-47, but the more talented team won, as this was TI's closest game of the week. They were dominate.
Kuric led the Sharks in this one with 16. Jones also contributed 12. Hobbs had 8 more assists in the contest.
Kenny Edwards who played very limited minutes in the final four due to a ankle injury did have an amazing block on 7'0" Beas Hamga, as Beas attempted a baseline dunk, Kenny pinned the ball on the glass. It was an amazing rejection.

The Sharks finished the national event 7-1 against some of the elite talent in the nation. What a way to end the summer and open some eyes accross the country.

Sharks Select finish 2nd at AAU State
May 21, 2006 The Sharks fell to SYF in the title game after a pretty good showing at the AAU state.

In the first pool game on Saturday the Sharks played SYF in what would eventually be the matchup for the state championship on Sunday.
SYF come out on top 72-63.
Logan Jones led the way with 20 points and 3 rebounds. His backcourt mate Braydon Hobbs contributed 11 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.
The team rebounded poorly, as Hobbs led the way with four rebounds.

Game 1 Leaders:
Scoring-Jones 20 points
Rebounds-Hobbs 4
Assists-Hobbs 5
Steals-tie
Blocks-Fields 1
Turnovers-Jones 4

In the second pool game on Saturday, the Sharks played a little better,as they pounded an over matched Hoosier Heartland 86-55.
Logan Jones led the way with 14 points and 4 assists. Also having a nice game was Zach Fields who contributed 12 points, but only had 1 rebound.

Game 2 Leaders:
Scoring-Jones 14 points
Assists-Jones 4
Rebounds-Alexander 5
Steals-Jones 5
Blocks-Alexander 2
Turnovers-Shannon 3

In the final pool game on Saturday night, the Sharks played their best game of the day with a 70-54 win over Indiana Select.
Matt Lynch led the way with led the way with 17 points including knocking down 5 three point shots. Braydon Hobbs just missed another triple double with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Kenny Edwards also contributed 14 points and 9 rebounds and couple of nice dunks.

Game 3 Leaders:
Scoring-Lynch 17 points
Assists-Hobbs 8
Rebounds-Hobbs & Edwards 9
Steals-Shannon 2
Blocks-Edwards 2
Turnovers-Fields 2

In the first game of Tournament play the Sharks played possibly their best early morning game of the spring, as they actually looked some what awake. They beat a pretty good Indy Select team 66-52.
Kenny Edwards led the way with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Logan Jones also contributed 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Cameron Mousa also contributed 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Braydon Hobbs again flirted with the triple double, as he contributed 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Game 4 Leaders:
Points-Edwards, Jones, & Mousa 12 points
Assists-Hobbs 8
Rebounds-Edwards & Hobbs 9
Steals-Hobbs & Jones 2
Blocks-Jones 3
Turnovers-Hobbs 4

In the State semi-final the Sharks beat a very good Eveansville Basketball Club who was playing as well as any team in the tournament and probably had the most dangerous player in the tournament in 6'5" wing Kyle Kuric of Evansville Memorial who had been lighting every one up.
The Sharks come out on top 66-51, as they were led by defensive stopper Spencer Shannon, who stepped up in the second half and held Kuric to 4 points, of which none came while spencer was in the game.
Logan Jones led the attack offensively, as he scored 16 points and dished out 4 assists.
Braydon Hobbs and Matt Lynch were the only other double figure scorers with 10 apiece. Hobbs also led the team with 6 rebounds and 5 steals.

Game 5 Leaders:
Scoring-Jones 16 points
Assists-Hobbs & Shannon 5
Rebounds-Hobbs 6
Steals-Hobbs 5
Blocks-Fields & Edwards 2
Turnovers-Hurtle 3

In the title game the Sharks once again did not play their best basketball against SYF. SYF is the only Nike sponsored team in the state and has had a great spring, as they won the the Kingwood Classic National event held in Houston, TX in early April.
SYF beat the Sharks for the state title 76-60. The game was much closer than the final score, as the Sharks led much of the first half and were down just 7 with five minutes to go.
Once again the Sharks did not rebound well against the much larger Nike team.
Logan Jones led the way once again with 17 points and 2 steals.
Bryadon Hobbs contributed 11 points, 5 assists, and led the team with 4 rebounds.
Cameron Mousa and Tyler Alexander were also both in double figures with 12 and 10 points.
Zach Fields played a solid game in the post with 9 points, but only had 3 rebounds.

Game 6 Leaders:
Points-Logan Jones 17 points
Assists-Hobbs 5
Rebounds-Hobbs 4
Steals-Jones 2
Blocks-Mousa 2
Turnovers-Hobbs 5

Second place at state was a solid showing. With Evansvile upsetting Team Indiana in pool play and then SYF knocking off Team Indiana in the semi finals it prevented the Sharks from palying TI, but hopefully that challenge will come about later in the summer.

Tournament Leaders:
Scoring-Jones 16.6 PPG
Assists-Hobbs 34
Rebounds-Hobbs 35
Steals-Jones 11
Blocks-Fields 5
Turnovers-Hobbs 13
3 pointers-Lynch 12
Dunks-Edwards numerous

Stats are not everything, but the fact that our point guard led the team in rebounding should be a clear message to our big men where this team is needing the most focus!
Sharks finish 5th at Adidas May Classic
May 12, 2006 The Sharks made a very strong showing in the 30 team field. This is the same tournament that the Sharks did not win a game in a year ago.

The Sharks beat a very good Evansville Basketball Club in their first pool play game 72-62.
Logan Jones led the attack with 18 points and two steals.
Braydon Hobbs also contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals.
Matt Lynch knocked down some some bombs from long range and finished with 11 points. Tyler Alexander also contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds.

In the second pool game the played what was probably their best game of the spring, as they knocked off a very good Indiana Elite Municipal Gardens team 66-58.
Logan Jones once again led the way with 18 points and 2 steals.
Matt Lynch contributed 14 points and helped the Sharks to build the early first half lead.
Braydon Hobbs once again had big numbers accross the board with 13 points, 9 assists, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds.
Kenny Edwards made some huge plays down the stretch including two huge dunks in the closing minutes. Kenny scored 11 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

The Sharks received a bye and then played Caps All stars in the final 16. The Sharks held off the Caps team 74-72 in a sloppy game.
Kenny Edwards led the way with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Logan Jones scored 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.
Matt Lynch hit four more three's and finished with 12 points.
Braydon Hobbs had an off game, but still managed 9 points and 4 assists.

In the final 8 matchup, the Sharks were handled by a very good 43 Hoops team from Minnesota 74-51.
The Sharks did not come to play in the first game of the morning.
Logan Jones led the way with 11 points and 2 steals.
Cameron Mousa did contribute 7 points and 8 rebounds.

We don't play until Saturday morning, but if anyone needs a ride up, I will be going up Friday night to watch our pools game and can give anyone a ride who is needing one.
If you are not going up on Friday, get there at the least one hour early on Saturday morning, because we still have to register and that can be a lengthy process.
Some players did not turn in all three forms of their AAU paperwork. If that is you, make sure you bring those with you this weekend or you will not be able to register and play.
You will also need copies of birth certificates if you did not play last year.

Sharks Select finish 3rd at National Grassroots Shootout
April 24, 2006 The Sharks Select team placed 3rd out of 16 teams in their age group at the National Grassroots Shootout this past weekend.

In their first pool game the Sharks beat Evansville Basketball Academy 70-40, as they had little trouble with the team from Evansville, as 6'10" center Zach Fields and Logan Jones led a very balanced scoring attack with 10 point each.
Cameron Mousa also contributed 8 points and Kenny Edwards contributed 8 points and 7 rebounds.

In the second pool game the Sharks beat a pretty good St. Louis Majestics team 66-60, as the team was led by Braydon Hobbs who scored 14 points and dished out 6 assists.
The Sharks played this one without Jones. Also Alexander and Edwards were unable to play in the second half.

In the third pool game the Sharks had a battle, but pulled it out in overtime 63-61 over Martin Bros-Iowa. The Sharks were once again led by Braydon Hobbs who just missed his second career triple double with the Sharks, as he finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists.
Mousa and Lail also contributed 10 points apiece.
Kenny Edwards had 9 points and had a huge dunk over two defenders off a steal and pass from Hobbs in the closing minute of the overtime.
Fields also contributed a strong effort on the boards with 9 rebs.
The Sharks once again played without Jones and Alexander who was injured against St. Louis.

In the first round of the gold tournament, or final 8, the Sharks palyed the Tennessee Travelers who was the favorite to win the tournament by many. The Travelers led most of the game, but the Sharks made a strong second half come back to win going away 75-68, as Logan Jones led the way with 20 points and 3 steals.
Trent Tucker also contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds.

In the Final four matchup with the host Kentucky Hoopstar Blue the Sharks led for most of the game, but come up short at the end 62-57, as it was just not meant to be.
The Sharks were led by Braydon Hobbs who scored 15 points and Matt Lynch who scored 11 points.
Logan Jones only played in 14 of the 32 minutes, as he was in foul trouble for most of the game, and Kenny Edwards and Cameron Mousa were both out with injuries in the second half.

The Sharks Select went 4-1 on the weekend, which is excellent in All Star basketball, but still come away with an empty feeling, which is a good sign that making it to the final four did not quite meet their expectations.

Regional State Tournament Performance
March 14, 2006 Logan Jones Madison

Jones had a great Regional opener as he led Madison to a 64-61 victory over defendings state champs Washington.

Jones contributed 26 points, 7 steals, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Logan was the biggest reason as to why Madison would be playing in the Final 8 later on that night against Evansville MaterDei.

In the Regional championship the MaterDei coaches knew exactly what it would take to beat Madison, as they played a box in one and triangle and two with a chaser on Logan the entire game. It worked to perfection, as Mater Dei limited Jones to just four shots on the night, as MaterDei advanced to the final four next weekend.
Round 3 State Tournament Performance
March 7, 2006
Logan Jones Madison

Jones once again had a nice game in the sectional final as he scored 13 points, dished out 4 assists, and pulled down 4 rebounds in helping Madison to the sectional title with a 54-43 win over Corydon.

Madison is now planning on taking home the Washington Regional title, as Logan will get to play against fellow sophomore star Tyler Zeller in the first round on Saturday morning.

Madison won all three sectional games by double digits.
Round 3 State Tournament Performance
March 7, 2006
Braydon Hobbs New Albany

Braydon played a great game in the sectional final, as he scored 14 points and dished out 5 assists, but his outstanding performance was not enough, as NA fell to Jeff 72-71(2OT) in the sectional final.

With Hobbs, Shannon, Barber, and Lynch in that sophomore class, NA should be hard to deal with for the next couple of years.
Round 3 State Tournament Performance
March 7, 2006 Spencer Shannon New Albany

Spence is one of the two sophomores who made up the starting back court for New Albany during the sectional. Shannon might not have put up big stats in round one, but his defense and ball handling were key in the Bulldogs victory over BNL.

Spencer scored 4 points and dished out 3 assists, as New Albany fell in the championship game to arch rival Jeffersonville 72-71 in double overtime.
Round 3 State Tournament Performance
March 7, 2006 Clay Starrett Eastern, Pekin

Clay went on to score 8 points and dished out 4 assists, as Pekin went down to Providence in the sectional final 59-41.

Round 2 State Tournament Performance
March 6, 2005 Logan Jones Madison

Jones once again led the Cubs over a pretty good Scottsburg team by scoring 25 points, dishing out 5 assists, and getting 3 steals. The Cubs won the game 77-60 and that set up a good matchup in the championship with Madison vs Corydon.
Round 2 State Tournament Performance
March 6, 2006 Cameron Mousa Seymour

Mousa scored 12 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, but Seymour was eliminated from the state tournament 79-64 by the sectional favorite in Jeffersonville.

Mousa scored 10 points in the first half, as Seymour went in at the half up by six.
Round 2 State Tournament Performance
March 6, 2006
Clay Starrett Eastern, Pekin

Clay had a great sectional game, as he scored 18 points and dished out 4 assists in helping Pekin to knock off Austin 75-65 and help to place Pekin in the sectional final versus Providence.
Round 2 State Tournament Performance
March 6, 2006
Braydon Hobbs New Albany

The 6'5" sophomore PG contributed 4 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds in his very first sectional game in helping New Albany to a 63-46 win over BNL.
Round 1 State Tournament Performance
March 1, 2006 Cameron Mousa Seymour

Cameron was playing in his very first sectional game and the obvious expectation of jitters was there, but Mousa come and played as though he had done this a thousand times before and led the Owls to a 83-69 win over the Floyd Central Highlanders by contributing 17 points and 5 rebounds.

Mousa hit 7 shots out of 11 attempts and did a very nice job on the defensive end with a couple of nice blocks.

Seymour will be be back in action in the second round Friday night as they take on the sectional favorite Jeffersonville.
Round 1 State Tournament Performance
March 1, 2006 Logan Jones Madison

The sophomore guard is known for having nerves of steel since putting up 25 points and 5 assists in his very first sectional game last year while being guarded by southern Indiana's top point guard in Dustin Marshall.

Jones did it again last night in the opening round of the North Harrison sectional as he led Madison to a 70-39 victory over Salem by scoring 19 points, dishing out 4 assists, and pulling down 5 rebounds. He also connected on two of four three point attempts.

Madison will be back in action Friday night, as they attempt to pay back Scottsburg for last years ousting from the state tournament.

Jones powers Sharks to U-15 AAU nationals

Courier Sports Staff
Courier Staff Writer

Two local athletes turned in strong performances for the Southern Indiana Sharks in the Hoosier Shootout and the AAU state and nationals.

Logan Jones and Brandon Hicks both play for the Sharks in the 15 and under division with Jones a starting guard and team leader and Hicks a key contributor off the bench.

The Sharks recently finished third in the state AAU tourney held at Warren Central High School before winning their pool in the AAU nationals July 9-16, advancing to the final 32 teams out of 100 before being knocked off by the Memphis Warriors.

Jones, a sophomore to be for coach Jim Matthews’ Madison Cubs, led the Sharks at nationals with 18.2 points per game to go with 4.5 assists per outing. According to Sharks head coach John Riley, Jones not only played well, but played well against some very higly regarded competition.

“We had the pleasure of playing against the Port Arthur Heat team from Texas and they have the number one ranked point guard in the nation by most recruiting analysts in J’Covan Brown, a 6-foot-2 guard from Beaumont, Texas.” said Ripley. “He is receiving heavy interest from Texas, Duke, Kentucky, and LSU. Logan Jones did very well in this head-to-head matchup. Jones scored 26 points and pulled down five rebounds with Brown guarding him for most of the contest. Jones was 10-14 from the field.

Riley said Hicks did a “real nice job off of the bench” at the nationals.

“We had some big wins in the tournament with wins over Wisconsin Force, ATAP from California, Inner Strength from Atlanta and Indiana Elite from Indianapolis,” said Riley. “There were nine Indiana teams in the event and we finished the highest out of the nine.”

Hicks was a key sub off the bench at the nationals and when the Sharks finished third the Hoosier Shootout at Warren Central High School July 6-8.

Meanwhile, Jones turned in a team-leading performance at that event with more than 350 college coaches in attendance. With 40 teams competing in their age divison, the Sharks finished third, losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Mean Streets from Chicago 62-60.

“Jones was our team MVP as he averaged 18.7 points per game, 5.2 assists per game, and 5 rebounds per game,” said Riley.

In May the Sharks finished third in the AAU state tournament held at Warren Central high to qualify for nationals. Jones again led the team by scoring 15.4 points per game and dishing out 4 assists per game.

“Jones is an exciting young player who should lead Madison to many big wins down the road,” Riley said. “If he will work hard to get his defensive game to match up with his offensive skills, he will be very special.”

'1-2-3 Caleb!' Magic's thoughts seldom far from ailing teammate
By GEORGE THWAITES

The Eastside Magic clearly miss their starting point guard.

In a 58-34 loss to the SI Sharks in Sunday's opening round of AAU Boys Basketball 15-Under/Ninth Grade National Championship pool play, the Seattle-area team missed the passing, penetration, ball-handling and defensive skills of 5-foot-9 Caleb Williams.

But before they even got to Tennessee, the Magic were already missing him in a fundamentally human sense.

Two weeks before the tournament, the rising sophomore at Mount Si High School was seriously injured in a 25-foot fall during a swimming accident.

"He was trying to help somebody off a rope swing who was stuck. He slipped and fell, fractured his left arm and rolled onto the left side of his head," said Eastside coach Steve Call, who noted Williams is rated the second-best point guard in Washington state.

"We're not sure of the extent of his brain injury. He's made some progress, but he's in a coma still."

The team sponsors had shooting shirts made up for this tournament with Williams' name and number on it. The players also wear black armbands in his honor, and have changed the huddle chant to "1-2-3 Caleb!"

The team is receiving daily updates on his condition from Andy Williams, the boy's father and regular member of the coaching staff.

"Every kid on our team goes to a different high school, but we've been playing together for quite a while. So this is a pretty tight group," said Call. "They've been down to the hospital quite a few times. Hoping for him. Praying for him. Standing next to him. Trying to encourage him."

On Sunday, Williams' absence proved discouraging for the Magic, who trailed by 10 at the half. The Seattle team turned up its full-court defense early in the second half but missed several opportunities to close the gap before the Indiana squad adapted and solved the press.

Kavario Middleton, a 6-6 post, was the only Eastside player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Jordan Call scored seven.

"They handle the ball well and we didn't get it inside to our big guy enough," said Call, the coach. "They were a fundamentally sound team and we struggled offensively. That's not like us to score 34 points. We average 55 or 60 points a game."

The Sharks - the Indiana AAU state runners-up - got 11 points apiece from Logan Jones and Cameron Mousa. The most problematic matchup was 6-9 post Zach Fields, who scored 14 points and put the fear in the paint on both ends.

"He's a big kid ... 6-foot-9, 250-pound sophomores are pretty rare. He's pretty hard to handle for most teams because of his size," said Sharks coach John Riley. "His parents are both extremely tall, so he probably still has some growing to do. It really depends on how much hard work he wants to put into it. He could definitely be special and play at the Division I level if he wants to."

Being from Indiana, the SI Sharks are both buoyed and burdened by the invariably high expectations that come with playing basketball in the Hoosier State. But Riley believes his team can live up to the challenge.

"There are a lot of loaded teams in the 2008 class in Indiana. Team Indiana has got to be one of the favorites to win this tournament," Riley said. "But we know we can play with Team Indiana, so we can play with any team here."

The top-seeded P. Miller Ballers opened pool play with an 84-72 win over Firm AC at Sullivan North in front of about 2,500 enthusiastic spectators.

Coached by rap artist Master P (aka Percy Miller) and featuring his teen heartthrob son, television actor and rapper Romeo Miller, the Ballers are already sports celebrities. A four-part miniseries on the squad - dubbed "The Team" - debuted on Nickelodeon this past June.

The road-weary and sleep-deprived squad was led by guard DeMar Derozen, who fired up 27 points. Renardo Grant added 16 while A.J. Hills scored 11 and Auri Allen contributed 10. Lil' Romeo picked up a free throw - and five fouls.

Tyseane Whitt scored 21 for Firm AC. Anthony Hargrave and Owen Wignot added 10 apiece.

"Our kids were kind of sluggish, but I think they showed the crowd what they're about. There's going to be a lot of high dunking and flying every night," Percy Miller said.

The P. Miller Ballers face the Bethesda Magic at 7:30 tonight. North officials warned that spectators will be turned away at the door once full seating capacity is reached. This is more limited than usual, since the lower bleachers immediately behind the team benches will not be utilized during this tournament.

The First Tennessee Stars beat the Fayetteville Titans 55-49, becoming the first Kingsport host team to win a first-round pool play game. Javan Joslin and Aaron Ebarb scored 10 points apiece, while Justin Sylvester and Dieonte Gray had nine each.
