We are an existing WAGS team that practices in the North Potomac/Gaithersburg area. We are currently looking for 4-5 players for the Fall 2011 season when we expand our roster in order to ramp up for 11 v 11 play. We are interested in all positions, including goalie. We look for girls that will fit into the team both on and off the field. On the field we look for hard working, athletic players who have good foot skills and demonstrate smart decision making. We have a core of girls who have been together for 3 years (6 outdoor seasons) and they have a lot of fun off the field as well, so that is also a very important part of this team. We put an emphasis on continued individual and team growth, while at the same time, emphasizing having fun with your teammates.

The team is coached by Pat Lane (Head Coach) and Matt Mills (Assistant Coach), both with extensive coaching backgrounds/training and competitive soccer experience. We also use a professional trainer to help the girls with individual skill development. Our goal is to provide long term soccer development, teaching the girls skills, tactics and soccer strategy that they will need in order to remain competitive throughout their playing careers.

We are looking for girls who really enjoy soccer and who want to commit to Fall, Winter and Spring soccer…as well as occasional tournaments…which we have found the girls really enjoy. However, the team supports the girls participating in other activities outside of soccer hopefully helping to make each girl a more well rounded individual.

If interested, we would like to have you to a practice or two during the Spring, so we can get to know each other. We practice on Mondays and Thursdays at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in the Gaithersburg/Quince Orchard HS area. Please contact Pat Lane at pat.lane@starpower.net to set something up.
Team Philosopy
Practices will be designed to spend adequate time on the primary aspects of the game – technique, tactics, & fitness. The technique work will be predominantly to help the girls develop good ball control and foot skills. Tactics training is designed to teach the strategies of team play. The focus will be on teamwork and getting the most out of our combined abilities. Fitness work will become more & more important as the girls play at a higher level.

Sportsmanship will be the emphasis over the outcome of the game (win or loss). The practices & games to be fun yet challenging - a good balance will be maintained. The goal from the coaches is for all of the girls to play soccer until they are adults because they love the sport. The coaches want the players to grow as individuals, taking the lessons learned on the field about teamwork, competition, respect, and fair play into the rest of their lives.

The Players
The coaches will strive to form a team of girls who are competitive WAGS level and who are highly “coachable”. In addition to a high level of interest in the game of soccer and desire to improve, the Seneca Magic players should have good listening skills and positive attitudes. The practice environment will center on the game of soccer & learning how to play the game the best way possible. Playing in the WAGS league also requires family support to ensure that players are present at most practices and arrive at least 45 minutes before each game.
